On Wisconsin!

What’s next after we finish North Carolina?

Our next fundraising push will focus on the crucial states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Ohio, two of which are swing states and all of which are of great personal interest to many Jackals.

There is a ton of money sloshing around the national races, and few opportunities at this point for our contributions to make a difference.  But there are local races where we can help!

We’ve selected these local candidates based in part on recommendations and research from Jackals on the ground, as well as consulting the vote maximizer website and funding disclosure sites, among other sources.

We are also focused on US House races – Matt Cartwright in PA, Rebecca Cooke in WI, and Greg Landsman in OH.

Important note: We’ll set goals for each thermometer because ActBlue requires a goal – our rule of thumb will be at least $2,000 for a state race and at least $5,000 for a House seat.  But this will be different from the fundraising for organizations where we let them know what we are trying to raise for them so they can plan for the funds.

PENNSYLVANIA

The Democrats hold a narrow one seat majority in the State House of Representatives (102-101).  It’s vital that the Dems retain control if Governor Shapiro is to have any chance of enacting his agenda.  We’re focusing on four women – all Democratic challengers from different parts of the state – each of whom could use the money.

The PA House

Meet the PA State House candidates:
https://annarthomas.com/meet-anna/
https://www.annapayne4staterep.com/meet-anna
https://www.hadleyforpa.com/about
https://saraagerton.com/about-sara/

Meet Anna Thomas (HD 137), who is challenging incumbent election denier Joe Emrich is the Lehigh Valley, arguably the state’s swingiest region.

Our second Anna is Anna Payne (HD 142 – suburban Philadelphia), who is challenging first term incumbent Republican Joe Hogan.  Anna credits the ACA with saving her life after she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.

Hadley Haas (HD-44, Pittsburgh area), who is challenging election-denying incumbent Valerie Gaydos.

And Sara Agerton (HD-88 – Harrisburg area) is a social worker and borough council member who is taking on incumbent Sheryl Delozier.

The PA Senate

Meet the PA State Senate candidates:
https://nicoleforpa.com/meet-nicole/
https://jimwertz.org/about/

The Republicans hold a larger majority in the state Senate (28-22), making a flip less likely.   Many of these races are well-funded.  However, there are a couple races in strategic state Senate districts where these down ballot races could help drive turnout.  We’ve targeted the PA Senate candidates:

Democrat Nicole Ruscitto (SD 37 – Pittsburgh area) is seeking to unseat election-denying incumbent Republican Devlin Robinson.  Nicole, a former teacher and councilperson, is focusing her campaign on reproductive freedom.

Jim Wertz (SD 49 – Erie) is taking on incumbent Republican Daniel Laughlin.  Erie is definitely a swing district, as evidenced by the recent visits by Presidential candidates.

Let’s go for a stronger majority in the PA House of Representatives, add a couple of good folks to the Senate, and help win Pennsylvania!  Reverse coattails!!!

WISCONSIN

Next up, Wisconsin.  Wisconsin has a Democratic Governor.  But thanks to aggressive Republican gerrymandering, the GOP controls the 99-member Assembly by a margin of 64 – 34, and the 33 member Senate by a margin of 22-10 (with one vacancy).   The map was perhaps the worst example of gerrymandering in the country – with many districts having non-contiguous detached pieces of territory.

But it’s a new day!  Thanks to litigation (remember the Supreme Court special election?) and the efforts of Democratic Governor Tony Evers, the “Fair Maps” Act passed in February.  Fair Maps required the drawing of entirely new lines that finally gave Wisconsin voters a shot at fair representation.  A Democratic majority in either body is within the realm of possibility.

Can Democrats Win Wisconsin Assembly?  Key Races Could Decide Control  (Wisconsin Public Radio)

We all know that the WisDems are well-organized and well-financed, and are dominating the Republicans in fundraising for state-level offices.   But there are at least four races that could use our help.  Three of these races are in the Green Bay area, Wisconsin’s third largest metro area and arguably its swingiest.

Generally speaking, these were chosen to support awesome candidates and get rid of odious republicans in super close races where our money can make a difference.

Meet the WI in-state candidates:
https://www.wallforwisconsin.com/bio
https://www.yeeforwi.com/meet-yee/
https://www.standwithspaude.com/ [most memorable ears since Obama!] https://www.christyforwi.com/meet-christy/

Senate District 30 (Green Bay).  Thanks to redistricting, there is no incumbent in this race.  The Democrat, Jamie Wall is a local boy made good and a former Rhodes Scholar.  His Republican opponent, Jim Rafter, is a bland – but not Trumpy – local official.

Assembly District 85 (Wausau).  Democrat Yee Leng Xiong, a non-profit leader and community activist, is taking on Republican incumbent Patrick Snyder, who has been in office since 2017. With the new districts, the 85th has the closest margins in the state, with a D+ 0.1 registration. Yee would make history as Wisconsin’s first representative of Hmong descent.

Assembly District 89 (Green Bay).  This is also a new district with no incumbent.  The Democrat, a young gay local prosecutor named Ryan Spaude, is taking on Republican Pat Buckley, a former cop and County Supervisor.

Assembly District 88 (Green Bay).  Another open seat!  Democrat Christy Welch, was “called to action,” in her own words, by the Dobbs decision.  She successfully transformed and energized the Brown County Democratic party as its chair.  The Republican has one thing going for him:  Name recognition.  His name is Ben Franklin.

It’s a brand-new ballgame in Wisconsin, so no one really knows what will happen – let’s do what we can to build a Wisconsin trifecta!

Donate

OHIO

Ohio jackals have watched their state go from purple to red – and then get redder.  While the Buckeye State is almost certainly a Trump lock, and the Republicans have a trifecta in the State House, there’s still work to be done:  Denying the GOP a super-majority in the State House of Representatives next session.

The 99-member Ohio House is split 67-32 and the State Senate 26-7 in favor of the Republicans.  While the Senate super-majority is beyond repair, there’s hope for the House.  According to the Brennan Center for Justice, all but 14 house seats are uncontested or uncompetitive.  We’re targeting three of those.

Ohio in-state candidates, come on down!
https://jamieforohio.org/meet-jamie
https://rachaelmorocco.com/
https://www.verbusforus.com/meet-lesley

House District 69 (east of Columbus).  Democratic challenger Jamie Hough is a young (37) travel center manager and activist, who campaign is focused on reproductive rights, school funding and affordable housing.  Jamie is gay.  The incumbent, Kevin Miller, is a retired state trooper whose website emphasizes the right to life, the right to bear arms, and “freedom from government overreach.”  A total nut job.

House District 60 (Delaware County, north of Columbus).  Democrat Rachael Morocco is a young (42) pediatric physician challenging the incumbent Republican, Brian Lorenz, who was appointed to the seat last year following the death of the incumbent.

House District 86 (NW of Columbus).  Democrat Lesley Verbus, 41, is running on a platform of reproductive freedom, alternative energy and “responsible” gun policy.  The incumbent Republican, Tracy Richardson, is an anti-abortion extremist.  She sponsored an abortion ban with medically ridiculous requirements such as requiring a doctor to “attempt to re-implant an ectopic pregnancy into the uterus” to avoid criminal charges.  Just typing that out makes me want to bang my head against the wall.

Are these candidates a long shot?  It’s hard to tell.  But this is an investment in the future of Ohio. These are promising young candidates (two women and a gay man) with the potential to lead a return to sanity in Ohio.  There is an initiative on the Ohio ballot that would establish an independent redistricting process.  If Ohio were to achieve fairly drawn districts for 2026, these candidates will be poised to benefit.

Let’s deny the GOP a supermajority in the Ohio State House of Representatives next session.

HOUSE RACES in PA, WI and OH

Matt Cartwright (PA-0 8) – Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Matt is the incumbent, but is facing a strong challenge from Rob Bresnahan, who is running on the usual blather about the border wall and fentanyl.

Rebecca Cooke (WI-03) – Eau Claire and Western WI.
Rebecca is running a strong campaign against election-denying loon Derrick Van Orden.  Rebecca has lots of rural farm cred (grew up on a dairy farm) and founded a non-profit to support and empower female entrepreneurs.  She has a very good chance to retire Van Orden.

Donate

Greg Landsman (OH-01) – Cincinnati.
Greg is a first term incumbent who we supported in 2022.  Greg is facing a challenge by Republican Orlando Sonza.  The district leans Democratic, but is still considered very competitive and a possible Republican pickup.

We did it!  We met our goals for North Carolina!  (okay, we’re still $300 short for the NC candidates)  But that’s close enough for government work!

We’re burning daylight – with just 18 days to go – so we’re moving on to PA, WI, and OH!

I know that’s a lot of text up top, so I made a page for the sidebar with all this informmation – for easy reference.

Basically, the 3 House Races each got their own thermometers, and each state got a single thermometer for all the state races we are funding.

PA has 6 races we are funding – gotta win PA! So PA is $12k.

Wisconsin has 4 races, so that one’s $8k.

Ohio has 3 races so that one’s $6k.

    ANGEL MATCHES!

Mousebumples has offered two different Angel matches, up to $100 per person per thermometer:

$1K Angel match for Cooke in Wisconsin

$500 ($125/candidate) for the 4 state Wisconsin races.

As a former Michigander, this tiny typo got my hopes up for an additional Michigan thermometer.

Will see if I can donate more later tonight. Postcards to Voters also has a new campaign for the Michigan State Supreme Court, so I plan to write postcards tonight, too.

I gave money to Cooke last week. Polling (*all sponsored by GOP or Dem leaning groups) are basically a dead heat. 2 of 3 polls since September 1 are 49/48. The 3rd (GOP sponsored) had Van Orden ahead 49/46 or so.

I think this was a seat that Dems gave up on too soon in 2022 thanks to GOP pollsters flooding the zone and making it look out of reach. It was ~4 point margin in 2022, but Van Orden has not covered himself in glory during his time in Congress.

Love these up ballot/down ballot collaboration efforts. Thanks, WaterGirl!

Civic Media (based in Madison) WI Voter guide – https://civicmedia.us/voter-guide

    Senate District 30

Democrat Jamie Wall is a business consultant who helped form New North, a regional economic development organization in Brown County and Northeast Wisconsin. He serves as the vice president of the Green Bay Water Commission and is a past board member of the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation and the Clean Wisconsin Action Fund. In 2012, Wall ran for Congress, losing to Republican incumbent Reid Ribble, 56% to 44%.

    CNalysis: Tilt D (FLIP)

    Proj. margin: D+3

    *****

There are two districts in Brown County that could go a long way toward determining which party wins the majority in November. They are both part of State Senate District 30, another we’ve identified as a “toss-up.” Needless to say, the road to control of the Assembly goes through the Green Bay suburbs.

    …

The Democrat in the race is Christy Welch, who did not face a primary challenge. She is the Chair of the Democratic Party of Brown County, elected in 2022, and was a delegate at this year’s Democratic National Convention. She works in a leadership role at a Green Bay manufacturing company.

This is as much of a swing district as it gets in Wisconsin, another won by both Tony Evers (by about 3.5%) and Ron Johnson (by 2%) in 2022, and won by 0.5% by Donald Trump in 2020. Given this dynamic, and with no incumbent on the ballot, this one could truly go either way.

    CNalysis: TOSS-UP

    Proj. margin: D+1

    *****

This is another open seat in Brown County, and another toss-up district, but one ever-so-slightly to the left of District 88. In the 89th, Mandela Barnes won here in 2022 by less than 200 votes….

The Democrat running here is Ryan Spaude, who is an Assistant District Attorney in the Brown County District Attorney’s Office. He has a focus on prosecuting drunk drivers.

This is the district that includes Lambeau Field. The road to the Assembly majority goes right down Lombardi Avenue.

    CNalysis: Tilt D (FLIP)

    Proj. margin: D+5

    *****

Central Wisconsin doesn’t include a whole lot of swing districts, but there’s one there now in the new 85th. This is one of the few districts on the map won by both Tony Evers and Ron Johnson in the 2022 midterm elections — Evers by 1%, Johnson by 3%. In the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump won this district by less than 200 votes….

Democrat Yee Leng Xiong is the challenger in this race, and were he to win, he’d make history as Wisconsin’s first Hmong state representative. Xiong has worked as the executive director of the Hmong American Center for the last decade, and is stepping down at the end of this year. He has served on the D.C. Everest Area School District school board since 2014, first elected when he was just 19 years old, and has served on the Marathon County Board since 2016. In a story at Madison 365 from earlier this year, he said that “one of my friends described me as annoyingly moderate.”

The New York Times featured this race in an extended feature story not long after maps were signed. The CNalysis projections puts this right at the center of the battle for Assembly control. If Xiong wins this race, it seems likely that Democrats will win a majority.

    CNalysis: TOSS UP

    Proj. margin: D+0.1

    ****

Xiong may be “annoyingly moderate” but after a decade plus of gerrymandered insanity in the State Leg, I’d welcome annoying moderates!

All 4 of these candidates are also in the WisDems list of highlighted candidates. I’ll include those writeups shortly…

    #WisDems starting lineup – https://www.startinglineupwi.com/

In 2008, Wisconsin had a blue trifecta, then in 2010, we had a red trifecta. That’s life in a purple state. Democracy in action. Power changes hands. But Republicans didn’t like that idea. So they rigged it here in Wisconsin. In 2011, Republican lawmakers worked behind closed doors to draw rigged maps that guaranteed that even landslide election losses wouldn’t cost them their majorities. It has been one of the most egregious, extreme partisan gerrymanders in American political history.

Ever since, Republican politicians in Wisconsin have used their unchecked power to take the power away from the people of our state—restricting access to the ballot, removing authorities that voters had entrusted to statewide elected officials like the Governor and Attorney General, and smashing the freedoms of workers to organize and advocate for themselves. For thirteen years, the democracy-proof legislature has been laying siege to democracy itself.

But then this past February everything changed. After more than decade of hard work, electing and then re-electing Governor Tony Evers, fighting tooth and nail to win and protect seats in the Legislature, and working tirelessly to elect pro-democracy Justices to the Wisconsin Supreme Court, fair maps became the law of the land once again.

In November, at long last, Wisconsin voters will have a real choice in who represents them in Madison. The majority will determine the majority.

And we aren’t taking anything for granted. WisDems, the SSDC, and the ADCC are teaming up to leave it all on the field. We’re running candidates in 97 Assembly Districts and 16 Senate Districts in our fight to retake the majorities, restore the blue trifecta, and to quote Gov. Tony Evers, “get sh*t done.”

This is the team that will do just that.

Photos of all these candidates (and a few more) are shown, but the “Read More” link just points to individual websites, which HE Wolf and WaterGirl have linked above.

I’m hoping that the decade plus gerrymander means the WI GOP has forgotten how to run a competitive race and maybe we get some surprise pickups. And an early Election Night call for Tammy and Kamala. 🤞🤞

Full service blog and all that.

*you will have to do your own math, but at least you know what to divide by. :-)

Just emailed WaterGirl about angel matching. But maybe that’ll be tomorrow. I appreciate the Wisconsin targeting, so I will let her run that schedule. ❤️

    @Armadillo:

Do we have plans to do anything for Texas or Florida?

Open to suggestions for candidates anywhere.

    • The races have to be close.
    • They have to be strategic.
    • They have to be races where our funds can make a difference.

    Suggestions welcome.

@WaterGirl: Mousebumples has offered two different Angel matches, up to $100 per person per thermometer:

$1K Angel match for Cooke in Wisconsin

$500 ($125/candidate) for the 4 state Wisconsin races.

To clarify, I’ll contribute $500 to the state leg candidates with that split. I won’t police if you want to split your donation a different way.

    Thanks everyone!

BlueGuitarist just pointed out that he is not being asked whether ActBlue can share his info.

It’s still set up that way for all 6 of these thermometers – to not share info unless you agree, as I always do.

But there are rules for candidates about who they can accept donations from, so I suspect that at least some of your info may get shared with candidates.

    @Mousebumples:

I didn’t know most of this – it surely demonstrates how far the Gop will go in removing democracy so they can keep their right to rule.

It should be across the national news to explain to all what trump can get states to do to help him  dissolve these United States and keep him in power.

    @WaterGirl:

What an amazing post (with/without) the missing keys. For those of us who are still sometimes confused about US elections, it is such an interesting look at the analysis that is done to direct funding to the right place.

We are in an election campaign, it consists of ads online, ads on TV & letters from politicians in the letter box.  There might be a debate – sometimes there is.  A different world.

Thanks for this WG, MB, HEW, and everyone donating and working in the trenches.

We won’t win them all, but I think we’ll win a lot and surprise a lot of folks on November 5 (especially the folks who might think election day is “January 5”)…

    Donated.

    Forward!!

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Democrats can tie the PA State Senate! State Rep Patty Kim is going to flip PA-S-15 which got so much more Democratic in redistricting that the incumbent R decided not to run. So Democrats need 2 more seats for a 25-25 tie: both PAS-37 Nicole Ruscitto and PAS-49 Jim Wertz are tossups, but under-financed.

Former TV news cameraman, union broadcaster, and Erie County Democratic Party Chair, Jim Wertz, 44, now a college professor, emphasizes “defending democracy, protecting abortion, respecting workers, and funding education.” Endorsed by 26 unions.
Nicole is also a basketball coach, and emphasizes, in addition to protecting reproductive rights, supporting public education, and uplifting families, including paid sick and family leave, affordable childcare, and universal preschool programs. She also has been endorsed by PA AFL-CIO, UFCW, SEIU, PA State Education Association, Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers, and Painters & teamsters locals.
Both (and the 4 PA House candidates) are endorsed by reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ Equality, Environmental, Gun Sense, and health care groups, and the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee.
Wertz spoke at both the Walz and Harris rallies in Erie.

@Omnes Omnibus: We don’t ever fund candidates that are a sure thing.  Last year nearly all of the candidates we supported were in very close races where it came down to not very many votes.

If we were to win them all, we wouldn’t be choosing very well.  Last year about 2/3 of our candidates won, if I recall correctly.

This year we’re doing a bit more down ballot races – in swingy areas – that we hope will have reverse coattails.

This has the potential to be a blue wave this year, so I think we will win some races that will surprise people.  Even if I’m wrong about that, if there’s every a year to swing for the fences it’s this year.

Adding to WG’s point at the outset about the 102-101 D majority in the PA State House – one of those seats is Biden -29. The Johnstown-area D incumbent has gotten re-elected but that’s a lot of ticket splitting.

In addition to the 4 women house candidates being from different parts of the state, each of them overlaps a key US House race: 2 competitive D-held seats, and 2 potential R-held flips.

PAH-44 (Western Allegheny County) overlaps PAS-37 Nicole Ruscitto and first term Democrat Chris Deluzio PA-17.
Moms Demand Action activist Hadley Haas emphasizes protecting our kids with common sense gun laws, protecting our air and water, investing in public education, and economic development. Origin story for activist mom: her kids Declan and Bennett have cochlear implants (Bennett the youngest ever).

PAH- 88 (Cumberland County overlaps PA-10 where local tv news anchor Janelle Stelson is running a strong challenge to “Freedom caucus” Scott Perry.
Social worker and local elected official Sara Agerton emphasizes public education, infrastructure funding, and making health care more affordable.

PAH-142 (Bucks County) overlaps PA-01, where combat vet Ashley Ehasz is challenging fake moderate Brian Fitzpatrick in a district Biden carried.
Diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) at birth, Middletown Township Supervisor Anna Payne, 37, is a prominent CF Patient Advocate and serves on the Pennsylvania Rare Disease Advisory Council. Anna emphasizes affordable access to healthcare, protecting reproductive rights, and“the right to collectively bargain and the union way of life.” Groups focused on electing young Democrats – Run for Something & The Next 50 – have endorsed Anna.

PAH-137 (Northampton County) Overlaps swing district: US House: PA-07 where Susan Wild is running for re-election after winning in 2022 despite being bombarded by $10 million in negative ads.
Policy analyst Anna Thomas, 28, is running against a right-wing Republican for a second time, having gotten 49% of the vote in 2022. Groups focused on electing young Democrats – Run for Something, The Next 50, and Leaders We Deserve (cofounded by David Hogg) have endorsed Anna. Other notable endorsements: 3.14 Action, the PAC to elect scientists; Asian Pacific Islander Political Alliance (API PA) and Indian American Impact (Anna was born in Bethlehem, PA; her parents are from India and Malaysia).

Working Families Party endorsed Sara Agerton and Anna Thomas.
