First, the Secret Service closes down the restaurant, and screens in a handful of ‘safe’ customers from the usual mob of TFG cultists…
For security reasons Trump's McDonalds visit was carefully staged ahead of time, with drive-through customers selected and screened by Secret Service, etc: https://t.co/xTTuVoFRa7

No, you’re thinking of Mike Dukakis — who didn’t deserve the abuse he took from Our Serious Media for that photo op. But, yes, multiple social media shots have compared the Dukakis-in-a-tank photo to the TFG-handing-out-fries one, which frankly makes Trump look even older & less competent.

Doug Mills, the NYT photographer who evidently took the pic of the fries being “offered”, posted it on Twitter without bothering to mention the whole thing was staged. He got universally slagged for it in the comments.

@Chet Murthy: Thanks… but you don’t have to convince me Michael Dukakis deserved to be President! I’m just happy that — like Jimmy Carter — Mike’s lived long enough to see his career & his values vindicated.
(If we’re each allowed one small conspiracy theory, mine is that the 1988 election was the GOP’s field trial of electoral electronic thimble-rigging. I said so at the time, and my dearest friends told me such behavior would be both ‘impossible’ and ‘unthinkable’, but considering our malign history since that time… )

Good morning, BJ.
Just wanted to pop in and thank whoever recommended Kim Stanley Robinson’s ‘Ministry of the Future’. Just finished it, a great read. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could be half as sensible as the people in this story. I’m sorry, but I can’t remember who it was. May have been lowtechcyclist, or any other of the well read jackals.
Kamala for the win. Please. The world is counting on you. I am amazed at how much effort you all are putting into a Democratic win in two weeks. It means absolutely nothing, but I am with you in spirit if not in action.
Aussie Sheila
@Debbie(Aussie):
I’ve got serious money on a win for Harris/Walz. I’m confident of a good meal at a fancy restaurant after Nov 5th US time.
What keeps me up is the US Senate results. The Dems need that to have any hope of forcing through real electoral reform. And that’s before toting up who is prepared to bust the idiotic filibuster rule to force it through.
Here’s hoping!🤞🤞🤞🤞
MazeDancer
The whole point of “working” at McDonald’s would be to have the noise. The sizzle, the pressure of the crowd.
That would require a hairnet or cap.
Wonder if there is video for TV? And if they will mention it’s staged.
Aussie Sheila
@MazeDancer:
The whole thing was a joke. No hairnet?
You’re kidding me. What idiot would ever take that photo shoot as even a simulacrum of working over hot fat?

Baud
If Harris staged an event where she rescued kids from a burning building, the media would attend and treat it as a story.
Aussie Sheila
@Baud:
If so he would be prosecuted in any decent Labor law regime. Such stunts would need to be paid for at least above the going rate for weekend work for actors, and the regular employees should never have been requested to participate in an electoral stunt. Such requests should be out of bounds for regular workers.
It’s unconscionable for ordinary hourly or weekly workers to be asked to participate in election stunts at their workplace.
Outrageous serfdom.

Betty Cracker
I watched a couple of clips from weekend coverage of Trump on the trail. Fox News gave him a clean-up opportunity to walk back his outlandish lies about Haitian immigrants and scaremongering about “enemies within.”
Trump played dumb about slandering the Haitians, claiming that he was just repeating what he’d heard and asking “what about the geese?” when the host debunked the cats and dogs lie. It came across as childish.
He stuck to his guns on the “enemies within” bullshit, name-checking Schiff and Pelosi as enemies who pose a greater danger to the country than Putin, Xi, etc.
He whined about being a victim of the “Russia Russia Russia hoax,” always naming the home country of his foreign collaborators three times. It probably sounded weird to any normies who were listening.

“Meal Team 6” had me LOLing more than usual.
I’m racking my brain as to whether or not the lone Mickey D’s in Martinsburg WV had a drive thru the summer I worked there in 1980 after freshmen year of college. The Pizza Hut next door, where I’d worked in high school (along with the vet tech job), had already hired for the summer. And there were virtually no other jobs in the ‘Burg back then so it was working for the Clown for the summer.
Working in fast food should be required of every American before heading out to college, trade school or profession of choice.
It teaches humility, responsibility and that people suck.
Betty Cracker
@comrade scotts agenda of rage:
That’s the damn troof!
I got a job at McD’s in high school and didn’t last any longer than Trump. But I worked at Pizza Hut for a couple of years back when they made employees wear those awful brown polyester uniforms with a matching visor. It’s been decades, but I can still smell the greasy stench that clung to the polyester. Builds character!
Geminid
@Betty Cracker: Normies wouldn’t know that early in Trump’s term, some Trump supporter mocked reports of Trump’s Russian support with “Russia, Russia, Russia.”
This was a reference to a popular male sitcom character known for reproving a female character with a condescending, “Marsha, Marsha, Marsha.” Other Trump fans found that hilarious and they’ve been bandying this insipid joke back and forth ever since.
Kosh III
I worked at McD in my early 20s cooking Big Mac burgers. I can still smell the nasty grease.
They should’ve had him cleaning out the grease traps.
Lacuna Synecdoche
First: I’m wondering how the press would portray this if Biden or Harris had done it.
Second: Is it me, or does Trump look like white-haired and mustache-less William Howard Taft behind that fryer?

@Kosh III: My son worked at Mickey D’s in 1990, and his uniform stank so badly that he’d come in through the service porch and put it straight into the washer, not wanting that stench in his bedroom.

@Debbie(Aussie): It was me! I’m so glad you read it and enjoyed it. It’s such a great book for getting a sense of the scope of what needs to change and how it can be done. I’m now reading his book, Shaman, set somewhere around 40 thousand years ago in Europe. It’s great as well in a very different way
frosty
@Debbie(Aussie): I don’t know if I was the one who recommended Kim Stanley Robinson’s ‘Ministry of the Future’ but I’m sure I at least seconded the recommendations. I agree that the people in the story worked on some good ways to mitigate the effects. I would hope that we could do the same in real life but I’m not seeing it.
Ruckus
@Anne Laurie:
which frankly makes Trump look even older & less competent.
1. He can look older, less capable, more useless?
2. In his case less competent is an oxymoron. Because he’d have to have some level of competence so that he could look like he has less. Unless competence can be measured as a negative. Hmmmm, maybe there is at least one case in humanity…..
frosty
@TBone: Wouldn’t the Stealers uniform lose him the eastern half of PA?

I owned a retail store for a while and while the vast majority of customers were decent, good people, there will always be a percentage that has to be not. As in not at all.

Guys, it’s retail. Any human being can come through the door and purchase stuff. Most are going to be reasonable, at least semi normal, some are not. A smaller some are not even close. That last group may be bigger or smaller than normal depending on what you are selling, but it’s still not the majority. Or you are in the wrong business – and/or location.

Citizen Alan
@Anne Laurie: The 1988 presidential election was the first I was eligible to vote in and also the first campaign during which I became aware of how awful our media is. The question Bernard Shaw asked Dukakis about the death penalty was utterly reprehensible. I eventually (and with great reluctance) voted for George Bush, but the ineptitude of his administration marked the end of me having any positive feelings for the GOP. In all the years since, I have only voted for two other Republicans. In both instances, he was running unopposed (Thad Cochran in 2000 and a high school friend running for district attorney in 2006). Since then, if the Republican is unopposed, I leave it blank.
Citizen Alan
@Aussie Sheila: All I can think of is 2012 when the Romney campaign made workers open up a soup kitchen after hours to get some pictures of Paul Ryan in an apron piously washing dishes that had already been washed earlier.
