Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

White supremacy is terrorism.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Petty moves from a petty man.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

“But what about the lurkers?”

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

I never watch MSNBC, CNN, etc, except for maybe after the big debate.  But I turned on my TV today and MSNBC came on, and there was Trump’s ugly mug saying how Kamala is taking the day off – because she’s so lazy – so he’s taking the day off, too.

I’m sorry, if she’s lazy for taking the day off, Trump taking the day off is… not lazy?

Guessing that Kamala is not taking a day off, but if she is… has Trump never heard of the concept of sharpening the saw?  Taking a day of rest after 60 or 90 days of going full steam, so she can give it her all for the next 14 days?

In happy news:  they have nabbed the MAGA guy who made the giant sign for Jan 6.  Them catching the guy(s) who built the gallows is still unmarked, but hopeful,  on my bingo card.

NEW: The FBI has nabbed a Jan. 6 rioter they say built the giant "TRUMP 2020 KEEP AMERIA GREAT!" billboard that was used to assault police during the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol that was sparked by Trump's lies about the last election. pic.twitter.com/NUn2iW9rim

@Trollhattan:In California news, has anybody seen Steve Garvey since summer?

    Who dat?

    LOL

I googled Steve Garvey campaign appearances and it looked like a google desert.  They got nuthin’ coming up.

Here is a recent article from an online news source that I have never heard of, California Globe.

Steve Garvey Ramps Up Campaign in Final Month Before Election

LOL.  I think right there that “ramps up” really means “starts up”  and probably is wishful thinking.

Post-Primary, Garvey has remained mostly in Southern California. For months he ran a pretty quiet campaign. He did venture out at times, giving interviews in places like Bakersfield, or hosting fundraisers elsewhere. His biggest even was travelling outside of the U.S. to Israel, showing support for the country while also brushing up on foreign experience in the leadup to the heavier political season ahead… not to mention higher profile events, like those with fellow former Dodgers and Padres players, across SoCal. And now, with October coming in and the end of the legislative session and Governor signing period in Sacramento, Garvey has finally begun to go all out.

    . . .

“Statistically, Garvey isn’t going to win,” said Stephanie Lewis, a pollster in Southern California, to the Globe on Wednesday. “But, to use some baseball analogies, he is like the team that is out of playoff contention but is still playing teams that could make it. He needs to win these final games, have a strong showing, and then help spoil the night for those going on. Garvey hitting above 40%, like you said, would send a strong message to Schiff and Democrats.

“And Garvey’s strategy right now is good. He didn’t have all the money in the world, so travelling was used sparingly until around September. And now, with business in Sacramento wrapped up, the news cycle is more open for political news. So him doing more and more interviews and events and fundraisers in the last few months made sense. Go all in on October and the last few days in November. Go to these places candidates don’t always visit, show his face, and do as much of that before election day and before mail-in ballots start to go out.

So he is hoping for that sweet 40%. That will shake the California Democratic party to the core. //

One side effect of high tariffs is less competition in the domestic market from foreign competitors. Prices on domestic manufactured goods can be raised because there’s no real competition for large companies.

Businesses can Jack up domestic prices for more profit, since they’re protected from a lot of international competition.

@WaterGirl: Eh, Aziz is right: within the parameters of the funding allocated, Biden has been noticeably slow in providing arms and allowing Ukraine to do what needs to be done.  There are those categories of  obsolete arms that he could have much more aggressively shipped to Ukraine.  DPICMs, some IFVs that were phased-out.  And he could have invoked the DPA to get production of shells and other heavily-used consumables going much sooner.

I think Adam’s made a pretty convincing case that Biden’s afraid of the consequences of aggressively supporting Ukraine, and as a result, our support has been just enough to keep Ukraine in the fight.  Just enough.  Which is the same as “enough so that Russia can learn how to beat Ukraine.”  If we’d done a better job of supporting Ukraine early-on, Russia would be defeated by now; instead, Russia has learned how to counter the kit we gave Ukraine, and the advantages they had early-on.

The one thing you don’t want to do, in a war, is allow your adversary time to learn, to correct, to improve their training and methods.  We’ve done that, in spades.

And of course the whole economy is going to be hampered with higher prices across the board if this kind of hyper-protectionism is ever enacted, but I think a lot of business owners and managers just hate liberals out of sheer tribalism more than they care about their own bottom line. The judge’s turnover order of the luxury items is swift and simple, but the penthouse apartment will have its control transferred so Freeman and Moss can sell it, potentially for millions of dollars.

He was unlucky to preside over a term that saw relatively high inflation after he successfully managed a recovery from the pandemic. High interest rates and higher prices is what did it.

There were a lot of supply chain issues as a result of the pandemic. Biden could have controlled inflation by having a weak recovery, which would have resulted in low demand (due to high unemployment) to match the low supply.

But Biden correctly went for getting people back to work. We had full (really overfull!) employment, which meant high wages and high demand. But if you have high demand at the same time as you’re having supply issues, of course prices are gonna go up. That’s Econ 101, hell it’s more like Econ 001. High wages for workers producing domestic goods and services pushed costs (hence prices) up too.

But all that was better than a lot of unemployment and a slow recovery like under Obama. (Fuck Larry Summers.)
