I will never quit you black twitter/tiktok. Ever. You give me life.
In a surprising development, if you are to believe Axios, 200,000 people have said “Fuck Jeff Bezos:”
The Washington Post has been rocked by a tidal wave of cancellations from digital subscribers and a series of resignations from columnists, as the paper grapples with the fallout of owner Jeff Bezos’s decision to block an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
More than 200,000 people had canceled their digital subscriptions by midday Monday, according to two people at the paper with knowledge of internal matters. Not all cancellations take effect immediately. Still, the figure represents about 8% of the paper’s paid circulation of 2.5 million subscribers, which includes print as well. The number of cancellations continued to grow Monday afternoon.
A corporate spokesperson declined to comment, citing The Washington Post Co.’s status as a privately held company.
Will this hurt Jeff Bezos financially? No. Will it be a huge embarrassment for him? Yes. And that’s fucking good enough for me. Give your money to ProPublica, TPM, and other news sources. Fuck Bezos and his Murdoch acolytes.
That’s it for me. Gonna go watch some detective shows until I slip into bed.

I may feel bad, but it isn’t my job to prop up a malignant organization just because some of the people whose bills it pays are good people. After all, the cartels pay a lot of little people’s bills, too. I’d love to live in a world where my taxes provided a safety net that ensured no one ever lacked food, shelter, or health care, so they wouldn’t have to worry about the possible loss of their jobs destroying their livelihoods. Alas, I don’t, and if the people who own WaPo and make up a disproportionate amount of its punditry have their way, I never will.
(Also, people’s subscriptions only have so much impact on WaPo unemployment. At any given time I would guess that WaPo is far likelier to fire people because it wants to show increased profit margins or assert dominance over employees, than out of any actual business necessity).

There is one way out of this mess.
We are at a crossroads in this country. shitforbrains has drained the last, very, extremely tiny bit of humanity out of the rethuglican party. I have zero idea what he’ll do with it, but I am sure he will fuck up doing it. I’ve been following politics for over six decades and this is as bad as I can remember it, shitforbrains is – the list is way too long but every entry is bad and involves swearing. At least we have an extremely good choice to vote for, so we don’t just have to vote against him.
And I’d bet most of us are voting for the correct person – Kamala Harris.
I believe this is my first time on this blog in around 2 decades that I’ve felt the need to actually type a name. But this is an especially important vote. I believe this is about OUR COUNTRY. The one for all of us. Not the one for a pompous, arrogant, deranged ass.

Other businesses will see that and not let the negotiations get to the public stage. [ETA: Just the threat is useful for threatening others.]
I see that point, but on the other hand a lot of what newspapers supposedly offer is credibility, and the Washington Post and LA Times just blew that completely away. Post for space stuff, LA for medical stuff, not just politics. Why read it if you can’t believe it, and if you have to keep close tabs on the publishers’ business interests.

So, his recommended response is… what?
I mean, there’s a basic reason why people are unsubscribing from WaPo here and it isn’t just “sending a message” or figuring out the correct countermove in an intricate chess game with Trump or Bezos. It’s that a newspaper that bends the knee like this to a fascist trying to take over the country has no value as a newspaper, and relying on it as a source of information from this point forward is only going to expose you to tons and tons of crap aimed at misinforming you and influencing you in a very bad direction. Now personally I think that’s already been true for years, but for other people, the final straw convincing them was this.
When I toss out food that’s gone bad, I’m not doing it to take a stand on consumption or appetite or health, and I’m not doing it to make a point to the supermarket that sold me the food. I’m doing it because it is no longer food.

Yay! The Tie-Dye Overalls have made an appearance! If I wore overalls, I’d want a pair like that of my very own.
WaPo’s cancellations are 200,000 just since the non-endorsement. I’d like to know how many have cancelled over the course of the year over insurmountable disgust over the false equivalency and sane-washing bullshit. (I beat the rush, having cancelled my WaPo subscription a month ago.)
I also cancelled my LA Times sub before their non-endorsement fiasco. No high-minded reasons: I just realized I wasn’t reading the paper except to skim headlines now and then. Ironically, or not, I started the subscription after cancelling my NYT sub.
Still have my Philly Inquirer, and my hometown paper, the Seattle TImes. The Seattle TImes pisses me off right regularly – but it’s a locally-owned paper with decent local reporting, so I feel obligated to keep subscribing. (All the national stuff is wire service, so I get NYT and WaPo stories whether I want them or not.). And the Guardian, to which I toss a few sheckels now and then.

@Scout211: Hinchkliffe made the lead story on the CBS hourly news report this evening. The news reader said that Trump’s rally was “overshadowed” by the comic’s insult, then played a soundbite of him delivering his lousy “joke.” Then they played a soundbite of a Puerto Rican Pennsylvania resident saying she’d been undecided but now she knew she had to vote agsinst Trump.
New York Rep. Mike Lawler was at the rally. His didtrict is in Westchester County not for from the rally site and has a substantial Puerto Rican population, so he released a statement denouncing the joke. Lawler is in a close race and he may have hoped this rally would help him, but now he’s doing damage control a day later.

So this past weekend was my 18 year old daughter’s first chance to vote in a presidential election and it turned out to be eventful.
She is a freshman at Washington State University and was back home here in Camas this weekend visiting and carefully filled out her first mail-in ballot. We decided to make Mediterranean food on Saturday evening and so decided to drive across the bridge to pick up baklava and pita bread at our favorite hole-in-the-wall Iraqi bakery in Portland. Any Portlanders who want the best baklava and Iraqi-style pita go visit Sunbela: https://www.yelp.com/biz/sunbela-portland
On the way there we dropped off her ballot at the ballot drop box at the Fisher’s Landing Transit Center which was on the way. She went back to Pullman on Sunday afternoon and this morning we woke up to this news, which has apparently gone national: https://apnews.com/article/vote-ballot-drop-box-democracy-fire-f66c52f774955106fb9e7c8172825cff And sure enough, her ballot was one of those that got burned by the MAGA filth. This is a blue neighborhood so pretty good guess as to which side set that box on fire.
So now we had to download a replacement ballot online and she is going to have to print and mail it from Pullman tomorrow. She texted her HS journalism teacher who she is close to with the news and her journalism teacher is good friends with a TV reporter in Portland and so now she is getting a zoom TV interview from her dorm room about how they tried to steal her vote and she isn’t going to stand for that.
Apparently hundreds of ballots were burned. Hopefully they will all get replaced. It is all over the news here. But it is a hell of a hassle. And we have a razor thing Congressional race here with Marie Glusenkamp Perez facing MAGA filth Joe Kent. So this kind of fuckery is very serious.
Anyway, it was a much more eventful first voting experience compare to mine 40-odd years ago.

@Chet Murthy: Sad part is, this is exactly what was expected eventually cause the entire show she got is nothing but gop shills saying whatever shit they want to and the dem having to be civil and Abby sitting by being “neutral”…smh

@Kent: Wow. What an awful experience for your daughter. Good for her to push through and go through all the steps to fill out her replacement ballot and make sure her vote counts. It sounds overwhelming for an 18 year old, but what a strong young woman you raised.
different-church-lady
@wjca: I mean no change in the behavior.
different-church-lady
@TS: This is the true blind spot with “the economy” under Biden. We have a system that is designed to suck money upward. More income in the lower tiers does no good if it allowed to be Hoovered up even faster. Every new dollar we earn is a dollar “The Market” will figure out how to take.

Spent the evening in Omaha for 3 hours making phone calls for Harris and Tony Vargas. It’s not my natural set of skills. My hands were shaking at first after the first few hangups. But when someone who identified herself as a Democrat called me a “Dufus” (or “Goofus” or some other old-person insult) for not agreeing that Harris was a liar it made me laugh and calmed me down a bit. Got maybe 3 people to agree to volunteer.
I’ll probably go back, though I’m also on tap later this week to try to track down ballots at the Douglas County Democratic office which, if I get to do it, would be a more efficient use of my time. I can probably do both. I kind of promised myself I’d put in 5 (partial) days of work. (I live in Lincoln an hour away, but Omaha is more likely to matter to the presidential and House races.) So far I’m at 2.

The FBI is investigating and apparently they have a Volvo on security camera. I don’t now how good the video is. But that certainly opens up the possibility that the same vehicle is on multiple security cameras going between this location and the one in Portland where another ballot box was burned with the same device at the same time. So hopes are that they catch the bastards.
One would think there would be a bazillion security cameras between here and central Portland that could have caught this car. They know the exact time frame to check. With some effort you would think they could identify the car and if it isn’t stolen, figure out who did it.

@different-church-lady: Inequality has decreased significantly during the Biden Administration. The bottom of the income ladder has made the biggest gains in inflation-adjusted terms. The people whining the most are the upper middle class who haven’t gained nearly as much.

Any words of apology you “shame” Trump into saying are meaningless. It’s just a transaction to him…I mouth words, you do whatever you said you would do if I mouthed words. Why not just flat out condemn this vile man, get a spine.
Anyway, can’t you hear him—ok, I’m sorry but it wasn’t me, never heard of the guy, but still you got the First Amendment and we all love our constitution, you know I could’ve locked up Hillary, right?
And it’s not as if this comedian’s remarks were the only racist ones.

Baby…the CNNPR statement wasn’t enough…now they got Abby coming on camera via twitter… CNN PR Lawyers telling them folks…fix it…we need an on cameras apology!
different-church-lady
@Steve LaBonne: Income gains, yes. But when it come to spending, who does the inflation pressure fall on more heavily?
Chet Murthy
@lamh47: I don’t watch hardly any TV — only what I see in clips, and in this case I read a Raw story article about it instead of watching the clip. But my impression from seeing Abby Philip’s long-form pieces is that she’s not actually neutral: she is actually pretty strongly anti-Trump. So her having to play neutral — well, it must really rankle, I’d guess. And then to have this sort of shit happen. Oof.
lamh47
Chile…here we go…Jon Stewart can go fuq himself.
So the joke that the campaign scrapped calling Kamala Harris a C*%t would that have been funny too Jon…GTFOH
Chet Murthy
@lamh47: I just remember that as terrible as Stewart can be and has been (so many -damn- times), he’s nurtured a veritable armada of excellent comedians who do great work. That’s worth something.
That said, geez John, go back to your farm, eh? Take care of your animal rescues (or whatever you do there).

@Chet Murthy: Dude was NOT AT A ROAST…IDC how many comics he’s “mentored” the only reason he’s even back on TDS is because one of those comics he “mentored” was passed over (RWJ would like a word thank you), Jon Stewart has been insufferable since he returned to TDS and continues to be insufferable

Hmm, I guess the blog got turned off. Aside from that… over on the ABC news site right now, this is the first item we see, right on top of the page. This story will last for awhile. Good!
What bugs me is that in their hate rally segments, TV news keeps using words like ‘huge”, and just now, “massive”, to describe attendance at that thing. Attendance figures I’ve seen estimate it at 20K, but Harris got 30K in Texas and I’ve not heard them use words like “huge” or “massive” to describe her rally. I guess she has to draw 40K or more just to bring her up to Trump’s much lower, but somehow huger and massiver level. Grr! :(

Police and FBI have vid of the perp, perps car and probably traffic cams, so they will get him. Given the location, it’s probably one of those White Christian Nationalists or Nazi’s that continually attack Portland.
It’s a federal offence, carries major fines and jail sentences.
The guy in Arizona who did something similar, was a felon doing it not for political reasons, but to get his State charges bumped up to Federal, so a better prison.

here’s what I wrote to a friend tonight, about this ballot burning
Mercy!
Burning ballots in Vancouver and in Portland. Jeepers. Not just one incident.
I can’t think what’s sacred enough to match a vote as a person’s expression of having rights.
We are people, even if we’re voting blue, or have green and purple striped skin.
Whatever it is, I’d like them to burn down the thing that means that much to them.
It seems a hate crime. and tampering with federal government. Similar to tampering with the mail. ( Oh, wait, that was a thing, too…)
Angry, but so shocked
