Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

The revolution will be supervised.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

I really should read my own blog.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

This fucking guy voted for Harris and Walz this morning:

Monday Night Open Thread 14

Blasted that picture out of twitter this morning after voting and now see that I still had toothpaste in the corners of my mouth and my hair was everywhere and my beard unkempt but fuck it, who cares anyway. Joelle loves me regardless, the fool.

Still a nervous wreck about the election, but I have done my part.

***

I have watched this no less than twenty times. I’m not proud about this, but I do feel I need to be honest with you:

We ain't serious bout SHIT lol

Also, the internet don't waste NO time lol pic.twitter.com/NkDvQggJ1O

I will never quit you black twitter/tiktok. Ever. You give me life.

***

In a surprising development, if you are to believe Axios, 200,000 people have said “Fuck Jeff Bezos:”

The Washington Post has been rocked by a tidal wave of cancellations from digital subscribers and a series of resignations from columnists, as the paper grapples with the fallout of owner Jeff Bezos’s decision to block an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

More than 200,000 people had canceled their digital subscriptions by midday Monday, according to two people at the paper with knowledge of internal matters. Not all cancellations take effect immediately. Still, the figure represents about 8% of the paper’s paid circulation of 2.5 million subscribers, which includes print as well. The number of cancellations continued to grow Monday afternoon.

A corporate spokesperson declined to comment, citing The Washington Post Co.’s status as a privately held company.

Will this hurt Jeff Bezos financially? No. Will it be a huge embarrassment for him? Yes. And that’s fucking good enough for me. Give your money to ProPublica, TPM, and other news sources. Fuck Bezos and his Murdoch acolytes.

***

That’s it for me. Gonna go watch some detective shows until I slip into bed.

I may feel bad, but it isn’t my job to prop up a malignant organization just because some of the people whose bills it pays are good people. After all, the cartels pay a lot of little people’s bills, too. I’d love to live in a world where my taxes provided a safety net that ensured no one ever lacked food, shelter, or health care, so they wouldn’t have to worry about the possible loss of their jobs destroying their livelihoods. Alas, I don’t, and if the people who own WaPo and make up a disproportionate amount of its punditry have their way, I never will.

(Also, people’s subscriptions only have so much impact on WaPo unemployment. At any given time I would guess that WaPo is far likelier to fire people because it wants to show increased profit margins or assert dominance over employees, than out of any actual business necessity).

There is one way out of this mess.

We are at a crossroads in this country. shitforbrains has drained the last, very, extremely tiny bit of humanity out of the rethuglican party. I have zero idea what he’ll do with it, but I am sure he will fuck up doing it. I’ve been following politics for over six decades and this is as bad as I can remember it, shitforbrains is – the list is way too long but every entry is bad and involves swearing. At least we have an extremely good choice to vote for, so we don’t just have to vote against him.

And I’d bet most of us are voting for the correct person – Kamala Harris.

I believe this is my first time on this blog in around 2 decades that I’ve felt the need to actually type a name. But this is an especially important vote. I believe this is about OUR COUNTRY. The one for all of us.  Not the one for a pompous, arrogant, deranged ass.

An actor known for his roles in the television comedies “Bob’s Burgers” and “Arrested Development” was sentenced on Monday to one year in prison for his part in a mob’s attack on the U.S. Capitol nearly four years ago.

Jay Johnston, 56, of Los Angeles, joined other rioters in a “heave ho” push against police officers guarding a tunnel entrance to the Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot. Johnston also cracked jokes and interacted with other rioters as he used a cellphone to record the violence around him, prosecutors said.

It expires next July – so I have some months of telling the editorial board what I think of their RW opinions. Front page at the minute has convoluted headlines which refuse to identify which party they are talking about

@Jay: Yes he did. Rolling over doesn’t work to protect the oligarchs from the autocrat in the long run, but customers punishing the business in the short run just damages that business, which increases Trump-types leverage with other businesses. They will fold sooner. He thinks the best approach is Mark Cuban’s. Just stand your ground now rather than later because autocrats will get you eventually if they are not stopped.

So, his recommended response is… what?

I mean, there’s a basic reason why people are unsubscribing from WaPo here and it isn’t just “sending a message” or figuring out the correct countermove in an intricate chess game with Trump or Bezos.  It’s that a newspaper that bends the knee like this to a fascist trying to take over the country has no value as a newspaper, and relying on it as a source of information from this point forward is only going to expose you to tons and tons of crap aimed at misinforming you and influencing you in a very bad direction.  Now personally I think that’s already been true for years, but for other people, the final straw convincing them was this.

When I toss out food that’s gone bad, I’m not doing it to take a stand on consumption or appetite or health, and I’m not doing it to make a point to the supermarket that sold me the food.  I’m doing it because it is no longer food.

She was recruited by the moron that phucked up our school board last term, undercut the new (woman) superintendant he helped hire so  much they fired her, then replaced her and her acting one, so now in a budget crunch we are paying for two ex and one current superintendant and trying to pass a bond issue that will raise my property tax by a couple of grand, just to stsy level with service cuts and a really iffy new superintendant.

Yay! The Tie-Dye Overalls have made an appearance!  If I wore overalls, I’d want a pair like that of my very own.

WaPo’s cancellations are 200,000 just since the non-endorsement. I’d like to know how many have cancelled over the course of the year over insurmountable disgust over the false equivalency and sane-washing bullshit. (I beat the rush, having cancelled my WaPo subscription a month ago.)

I also cancelled my LA Times sub before their non-endorsement fiasco.  No high-minded reasons: I just realized I wasn’t reading the paper except to skim headlines now and then.  Ironically, or not, I started the subscription after cancelling my NYT sub.

Still have my Philly Inquirer, and my hometown paper, the Seattle TImes.  The Seattle TImes pisses me off right regularly – but it’s a locally-owned paper with decent local reporting, so I feel obligated to keep subscribing.  (All the national stuff is wire service, so I get NYT and WaPo stories whether I want them or not.).  And the Guardian, to which I toss a few sheckels now and then.

It was not the first time Hinchcliffe had used the Puerto Rico line — he practiced it at The Stand comedy club in New York City, where he made a surprise appearance Saturday night, according to an NBC News producer and three other people who happened to be in the audience.

The joke did not draw laughs, just a handful of awkward chuckles. Hinchcliffe told the audience that he would be performing at the Madison Square Garden rally the next day and said multiple times during his routine that he would get a better reaction “tomorrow at the rally.”

You do the same thing expecting a “better reaction.”

@Scout211: Hinchkliffe made the lead story on the CBS hourly news report this evening. The news reader said that Trump’s rally was “overshadowed” by the comic’s insult, then played a soundbite of him delivering his lousy “joke.” Then they played a soundbite of a Puerto Rican Pennsylvania resident saying she’d been undecided but now she knew she had to vote agsinst Trump.

New York Rep. Mike Lawler was at the rally. His didtrict is in Westchester County not for from the rally site and has a substantial Puerto Rican population, so he released a statement denouncing the joke. Lawler is in a close race and he may have hoped this rally would help him, but now he’s doing damage control a day later.

It’s hard to gauge how damaging Hinchkliffe’s performance will be, but it’s got Republican politicians very worried.

So this past weekend was my 18 year old daughter’s first chance to vote in a presidential election and it turned out to be eventful.

She is a freshman at Washington State University and was back home here in Camas this weekend visiting and carefully filled out her first mail-in ballot.   We decided to make Mediterranean food on Saturday evening and so decided to drive across the bridge to pick up baklava and pita bread at our favorite hole-in-the-wall Iraqi bakery in Portland.   Any Portlanders who want the best baklava and Iraqi-style pita go visit Sunbela: https://www.yelp.com/biz/sunbela-portland

On the way there we dropped off her ballot at the ballot drop box at the Fisher’s Landing Transit Center which was on the way.    She went back to Pullman on Sunday afternoon and this morning we woke up to this news, which has apparently gone national:  https://apnews.com/article/vote-ballot-drop-box-democracy-fire-f66c52f774955106fb9e7c8172825cff  And sure enough, her ballot was one of those that got burned by the MAGA filth.  This is a blue neighborhood so pretty good guess as to which side set that box on fire.

So now we had to download a replacement ballot online and she is going to have to print and mail it from Pullman tomorrow.  She texted her HS journalism teacher who she is close to with the news and her journalism teacher is good friends with a TV reporter in Portland and so now she is getting a zoom TV interview from her dorm room about how they tried to steal her vote and she isn’t going to stand for that.

Apparently hundreds of ballots were burned.  Hopefully they will all get replaced.  It is all over the news here.  But it is a hell of a hassle.   And we have a razor thing Congressional race here with Marie Glusenkamp Perez facing MAGA filth Joe Kent.  So this kind of fuckery is very serious.

Anyway, it was a much more eventful first voting experience compare to mine 40-odd years ago.

There’s no change in the pattern as shown in the polls.  Polls which, as well established by now, are missing significant parts of the electorate.  Which parts just happen to be the parts of the electorate most likely to be influenced by what has been sais/done.

Spent the evening in Omaha for 3 hours making phone calls for Harris and Tony Vargas.  It’s not my natural set of skills.  My hands were shaking at first after the first few hangups.  But when someone who identified herself as a Democrat called me a “Dufus” (or “Goofus” or some other old-person insult) for not agreeing that Harris was a liar it made me laugh and calmed me down a bit.  Got maybe 3 people to agree to volunteer.

I’ll probably go back, though I’m also on tap later this week to try to track down ballots at the Douglas County Democratic office which, if I get to do it, would be a more efficient use of my time. I can probably do both.  I kind of promised myself I’d put in 5 (partial) days of work. (I live in Lincoln an hour away, but Omaha is more likely to matter to the presidential and House races.) So far I’m at 2.

The FBI is investigating and apparently they have a Volvo on security camera.  I don’t now how good the video is.  But that certainly opens up the possibility that the same vehicle is on multiple security cameras going between this location and the one in Portland where another ballot box was burned with the same device at the same time.  So hopes are that they catch the bastards.

One would think there would be a bazillion security cameras between here and central Portland that could have caught this car.  They know the exact time frame to check.  With some effort you would think they could identify the car and if it isn’t stolen, figure out who did it.

Racist, crude comments at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally overshadow his ‘closing argument’

What bugs me is that in their hate rally segments, TV news keeps using words like ‘huge”, and just now, “massive”, to describe attendance at that thing. Attendance figures I’ve seen estimate it at 20K, but Harris got 30K in Texas and I’ve not heard them use words like “huge” or “massive” to describe her rally. I guess she has to draw 40K or more just to bring her up to Trump’s much lower, but somehow huger and massiver level. Grr! :(
