VP Harris delivers a speech at the Ellipse in DC / 7:15pm ET
WATCH PARTY RSVP: https://t.co/ejXC0WIy2i— Olga Nesterova (@onestpress) October 29, 2024
Kamala Harris speaks at 7:30PM tonight in DC at the same location Trump rallied insurrectionists on January 6.
She will give the speech of her life at what will be the highest attended campaign event by far of 2024.
All eyes on Madam President Harris today. Mark my words. 🙏🏾

Kamala Harris's official campaign "closing argument" speech at the Ellipse in DC, where Trump's January 6 mayhem began. Crowd originally estimated at 20,000 is now heading past 50,000. #Ellipse #KamalaHarris https://t.co/xKCyKH0fhh
— Neil McMahon (@NeilMcMahon) October 29, 2024
From the local paper The Washingtonian yesterday — “What to Know About Kamala Harris’s Speech on the Ellipse”:
… Plan for big crowds
Harris is expected to address an audience of about 20,000 people on the Ellipse, according to the event’s National Park Service permit. An earlier permit, which sought to host the remarks on the National Mall rather than the Ellipse, estimated about 8,000 attendees. (For reference, the 2011 National Christmas Tree Lighting on the Ellipse, which featured an appearance by Kermit the Frog, drew about 17,000.) Overflow crowds will head to the Washington Monument’s northeast grounds.To grab a good spot, attendees might want to arrive early—the site opens to the public at 3 PM, hours before programming is slated to start at 7:15 PM. Once underway, the event should run for about an hour.
Registration is free
Those interested in watching the speech in person can register for free on the Democratic National Committee’s website. Washingtonian has reached out to the DNC for information on whether attendance will be capped, but we haven’t heard back yet…
We don’t know who—if anyone—will join Harris
Harris is the only speaker specified on the NPS permit, and campaign officials have kept mum on whether any special guests will be joining her…The symbolic significance of the Ellipse as the site of Harris’s final appeal to voters marks another effort by the campaign to distinguish her as this year’s pro-democracy candidate. Trump was the last political figure to speak at the park back in January 2021: He urged listeners to “fight” against baseless claims of widespread voter fraud, which he falsely argued led to President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory—shortly after, throngs of his supporters broke into the Capitol as Congress was certifying the results.

I walked past the Ellipse around 5:00 and the line to get in stretched at least from Constitution Avenue up to the north end of the Treasury Building and back (probably to the middle of the block between 15th and 17th Streets on Constitution). That’s 10 blocks, give or take. It was moving pretty fast, but it probably was at least an hour’s wait to get in. And I passed a ton of people who were going to the rally as I walked east along Constitution from there. It’s going to be jammed.

Mailed the last of my Postcards tonight.
My math is 344 for the November elections. 303 with Postcards to Swing States for Wisconsin (3 extras that I sent to friends and family), 20 for Sherrod Brown and 21 for the MI Supreme Court race.
My post office is closed, so I’m done with postcards. Might do some text banking. I’m not sure if I can get to a phonebank training or if I can find a canvassing shift where I don’t need to worry about kiddos.
We’ll see. Thanks for putting up these videos and articles, AL!

@HumboldtBlue: You know what I call this rally on the Lawn? Vengeance.
Not just for January 6th. But for that incredibly destructive “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear” that took place shortly before the election in… 2010. You remember what happened that year, don’t you?
I’m sure you do. It is something I will not ever forgive Jon Stewart for, and Stephen Colbert, Adam Savage, Jamie Hyneman and a boatload of other celebrities didn’t cover themselves in glory either. The whole thing was a combination of “Who cares about elections but those fringe freaks?” and “Boffsides!!11!!” 14 years later, we have barely begun to repair the destruction from that election. Many states are still gerrymandered to the hilt thanks to it.
Her rally can’t match theirs, over 225,000 attended. But the fact that a partisan rally managed a full third of their snarky celebripalooza’s attendance, that says something right there.

We were in a crowd there like that for Bill Clinton’s first inauguration. Now we’re too old to stand that long and deal with the crowds. Happy to watch it on TV.
ArchTeryx
@Baud: I was fucking there at that “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear” for as long as I felt there was a safety margin before the crowds turned into a crush. It wasn’t that long, but long enough to hear Jon Stewart’s tired boffsides schtick and some of Stephen Colbert’s right-wing mockery (the only decent part of the whole event). The sheer amount of smugness at that rally could have suffocated me like poisonous smoke if I hadn’t booked when I did. I was the only one on the Shady Grove train on the way home.

The crowd is wild. I am just south of Constitution. Didn’t make it onto the Ellipse. The crowd extends to the top of the hill by the Washington Monument. Can’t wait to see Madame President.
Hildebrand
Sitting here, with my 22 year old daughter, someone who is far more progressive than even me, she looked at me at the end of the speech, ‘she nailed it, Dad. She’s going to win.’
Elizabelle
@Planetjanet: We will do a meetup near Inauguration time. Glad you turned out for history.

mrmoshpotato
@bbleh: Yes! It was a masterful move! I hope the behind the scenes planning is revealed some day – even though it freaked me out at first.
Planetjanet
@Elizabelle: Great idea!
Elizabelle
@mrmoshpotato: They better get used to it.

@Hildebrand:
Hopefully her fellow youngs not only agree, but vote for MVP to make it so.

@KatKapCC:
Paul Campos, a while back at LGM, ” ‘Kidding on the square’ — to be joking but at the same time really mean it — is a central aspect of fascist aesthetics.”
(wictionary has a 1907 usage reference, “kiddin’ on the square”)
Elizabelle
@hrprogressive: I think they will. Climate change. The economy. Getting a foothold. Repro rights and freedom. Respect for sexuality and gender.
I don’t think the majority of young people are nihilists, or frivolous.
Fake Irishman
@Mousebumples:
Also, I feel it’s important to take this opportunity to recognize you for all the common-sense non-nonsense hard work you’ve put in this cycle (along with many others here as well). I’d be reading through some ugly saloon fight of a thread about whether Joe Biden should drop out and you’d always quietly arrive, calmly dodge a thrown chair, and politely add a comment about how you’d written another 10 postcards for swing states between helping orphaned hedgehogs or some other societally helpful endeavor in a vain attempt to get us focused.
Jeffro
@Mousebumples: congrats and way to go on all those postcards!
mrmoshpotato
@Baud:
@KatKapCC: Fuck ’em with a World Series sweep!
I hope those “fans” were kicked out.
Hildebrand
@hrprogressive: I know all of her friend group have already voted, so I have hope.

From the campaign (and my new background avatar!):
cain
@Aziz, light!: one of the best political moments of my life. It felt like witnessing history in real time.
Elizabelle
@Fake Irishman: Agreed. And this with two tiny kids underfoot. Three cheers, and some restorative sleep after this is all over.
karen marie
@HumboldtBlue: Haley’s just mad because Trump cut her out of his campaign events.

Work hard, fight harder, run through the finish line…
…but DAMN it’s going to feel good next Wednesday knowing that a) the Republic is safe for a little while longer, and b) that it’s time. to. rub. the RWNJs’. nose. in. it.
These people sold their souls, and we told them the whole time that they’d regret it. OOPS
Elizabelle
MVP did even better than expected. And my expectations were not low.
She came off as Presidential. And approachable.
Harrison Wesley
I’m interested in hearing what the real Democratic Party people I’ve been with at the SOE greeting thing will have to say. Bet they’ll be ecstatic. Tomorrow a.m./p.m should be enjoyable. Except for the Republicans in the tent next to us….I suspect they’ll be a bit cranky,
Baud
@Elizabelle:
Young people today probably can’t even spell those words.
Jeffro
hell YEAH it will!
(plus…I’m going to be there for that one!)
lamh47
Baby Rick Steves tries to stay “non-partisan” since he a travel guru, but not this political season!
hrprogressive
@Hildebrand:
That’s heartening to hear.
You can find plenty of online anecdotal evidence of young people basically going “What’s in it for me?” and yes, some of it does strike me as nihilism.
But there is also a lot of anecdotal evidence of “Republicans for Harris” and “First Time Voters for Harris” and “We are so back, let’s vote Harris, I didn’t want Biden” young people, too, so.
It’s also hard to know how much of any of the above is potential bot activity/disinformation/who knows.
It’s just so tough to know what’s real anymore.
karen marie
@ArchTeryx: That 2010 “rally” was also held on a weekend and had several weeks of publicity leading up to the date. This is a weekday night with a week or less advance notice.
Baud
@cain:
I’m bittersweet about 2008 because we didn’t follow through as a people. Everything since then is a consequence of that failure.
Baud
@hrprogressive:
Correct. And today’s media doesn’t help shift through the noise. They make it worse.
Libs need to get comfortable living and acting in a world of little good information.

@KatKapCC:
She and her hubby both then. He got in trouble with CBS over some remarks recently. Can’t remember what but Google will surely tell you.
Geminid
@Gloria DryGarden: I wonder how many Republicans will cross over to vote against Lauren Boebert. If I lived in northeast Colorado and was a scheming, Karl Rove-type Republican, I might try to knock Boebert out this year so the party could run a more conventional and less embarrassing candidate in 2026. They can get that seat back.
karen marie
@lamh47: Wait, when did Gretchen Carlson leave Fox?
karen marie
@lamh47: Carlson lost me when she said Harris is “alleging” that Trump says he’ll lock up those who oppose him. You can take the Carlson out of Fox but you can’t take the Fox out of Carlson.

@hrprogressive: Bunch of “Republican Voters against Trump” ads here on this Meidas Touch video (they start around 6 minutes in). Those are real people.

New post up top — Michelle Obama is speaking in Atlanta right now!

@lamh47: wow, his short video speech featured there is a lot more powerful than the text of his xit. He really nails it.
DougL
@Planetjanet: Just a gigantic crowd. We waited for hours and then went to overflow on the grounds of the Washington monument. That lawn was jammed too. Easily 75-100k people.

@TBone: He did a great show about the rise of fascism.

@DougL: I hope it was fun!

Presumably there’s a specific policy (or lack of a policy) failure for each one. For example, Taylor Swift is a billionaire because….

@zhena gogolia:
It was great. She came out on time and kept it crisp and to the point. One of those happy DC crowds that is the city at its best!!
RaflW
@HumboldtBlue: Wow, Nikki Haley talking about that awful C-word ad more than the major press did.
Yes, yes, I harp on press failures. But that one is up there. Good on Haley to point it out, since ostensibly she and Muskrat are on the same ‘team’.
Eolirin
@wjca: There’s just the one policy failure that enables all the others, inadequate taxation and enforcement thereof.
In the case of companies, more antitrust enforcement is also needed, but for individual wealth accumulation, taxation is sufficient.
H.E.Wolf
This warms my heart! Huge thanks to you and the 6-year-old. So great that the two of you shared in the doing of it.

Amen! I think we need a ticker-tape parade for Mousebumples.

Great speech, well delivered.

Late I know but I just got home. Hard to get out of the event space, very limited gate access. Anyway it was a good speech but I was hoping for something more than the regular stump speech although it was a good speech. Bought a tshirt on my way out which I will wear to exercise class tomorrow. There were lots of young people. At 65 I was among the oldest although not infirm as many of the older folks I saw were. Anyway, glad I went although 4 hours of standing will have an effect.
frosty
I went. Terrible drive down from PA because the Parkway was its usual parking lot. I got in line at 5:00. I didn’t get in – previous commenters talking about the lines are right. Here’s the message I sent the campaign. I’m pissed.
=====
Well, I thought I was going to be at the rally. The campaign sent me an invitation and I was really excited! I waited in line for 2 1/2 hours to have a couple of volunteers tell me the gate was closed. What, you couldn’t have sent a policeman on horseback or a real campaign person???
I’m really disappointed. Either a) anyone who showed up early got in with or without a ticket, or b) the campaign issued thousands more tickets than there was capacity for. I suspect b) because everyone in line I talked to had an invitation like I did. Which means sending out more invitations than you had capacity for was a real organizational problem.
Thanks for disrespecting this long-time Democratic donor and canvasser (5 presidential going back to Kerry and 4 Congressional).
Do better. For now I’m taking you off my text and email lists. And I’m wondering if I should canvass or donate this last weekend.
PS As of now, the only Presidential campaign rally I’ve been to was Richard Nixon, 1960, when my Republican mom took us out of school to see him whistle stop in York PA. That was better organized than this.
FelonyGovt
@lamh47: Welcome! You enhance our state! ❤️
frosty
@randy khan: I got there at 5:00 and was in line until 7:30 when they told us there was no room and to go to the Mall. No idea how many people were there but if the Ellipse holds 20,000, it was double that.
Nice speech, what I could see of it on the TV beyond the leaves on the trees and the tall people in front of me.
Another Scott
@frosty: I’m sorry you had a bad experience.
I remember taking the Metro to DC to try to see Clinton’s 1993 inauguration without a ticket. It was impossible to see anything at all (trees blocking [sight] lines, fences, etc.). I went back home (I’m not a parade person).
I know of people with tickets who got stuck in the Purple Tunnel of Doom in Obama’s inauguration.
When crowds are big enough, and there must have been lots of people without invites in the area even if they couldn’t get in, things break down. There’s only so much planning that can be done for a big event in a public park in a major city.
Thanks for all you’re doing.
Hang in there.
Cheers,
Scott.
frosty
@frosty: sorry to be so grumpy. It was a LONG fucken day.
topclimber
@frosty: chill frosty. Or as my sainted Irish Nana would say, offer your suffering up to the Lord.
frosty
@ArchTeryx: @Baud: 2010 is the year I was working the polls as a Dem observer and one voter asked “What are you doing?” “Checking off registered Democrats.” I’m a Democrat? Where do I go to register Tea Party?”Disaster.
frosty
@Scout211: Agree, the petty tyrant line was the best.
frosty
@Another Scott: I hadn’t heard of the Purple Tunnel Of Doom before. Yep, it seems like better planning is in order.
To this I’ll add that the best organized campaigns I worked on were Obama’s. On Election Day they sent us out into the farmland boonies because everything else had been covered.
It really matters when a community organizer in in charge of the campaign.
PS in 2016 the PA Dems had forgotten all of it. Or else Obama For America didn’t share anything. I despair of this party sometimes. Can we, at a minimum, coordinate the campaigns up and down the ballot???
cain
@Baud:
It was helpful because it revealed the character of this nation. To replace Obama with Trump was a kind of repudiation that was hard to take.
That he still has significant support to run for another term makes me so angry.
cain
@RaflW:
She is still voting for him. Saying she is voting based on policy not personality. Still on brand.

@Bill Arnold: my dad
