That almost reads like satire. Apparently, according to Wiki, she’s been like this for at least 10 years:
Since around 2014, Wolf has been described by journalists and media outlets as a conspiracy theorist. She has been criticized for posting misinformation on topics such as beheadings carried out by ISIS, the Western African Ebola virus epidemic, and Edward Snowden.
Wolf has objected to COVID-19 lockdowns and criticized COVID-19 vaccines. In June 2021, her Twitter account was suspended for posting anti-vaccine misinformation.
Apparently there were danger signs a while back. Naomi Klein even wrote a book about it (in a sense). About how her “doppelganger” Naomi Wolf was a nutter, and she got the blowback from it (from people mixing the two up, haha). Apparently there was a case where the entire -basis- of a book Wolf wrote turned out to be wrong, and in a hilariously stupid way. So, well, she seems to have burned her credit among progressives, so she went where she could still get a hearing (and (probably) haha, still make money).

First I’d have to track them down and find them. Their parents might look askance at that.
(Due to some very local geography, we get very few trick-or-treaters at our house. This year, we got a not-very-grand total of five.)
“A Navajo County candidate who has made God a cornerstone of his campaign for recorder was arrested after a road rage incident where he pulled a gun and yelled obscenities in front of a Christian school, police said.
“Timothy Jordan falsely reported people flashed firearms at him during the incident in front of White Mountain Christian Academy, Show Low police said.“
Decided that with the cost of candy I would do something different and hand out Hostess cupcakes. It has been fun. To say the kids like them would be an understatement. You would think I was handing out diamonds.

Between the frozen shoulder and having done both the RSV and pneumonia vaxes earlier this week I’m in a full Cole-level misanthropic mood, so I’m hiding the back of the house for the safety of any trick or treater who ignore the porch light being out and house being dark.
Extra salty because I had planned to go up to the Sierras this weekend to view fall colors, but the very minor that’s passing through has caused Caltrans to close two of the highways I planned to drive—probably for the winter. Fuuuuuuck!

I’m planning to avoid most of the madness this weekend. Tomorrow I’m going down to Asilomar in Monterey County for a Scottish Country Dance retreat. Ceilidh tomorrow night, classes all day, formal ball Saturday night, after party until God knows when, and a combined class Sunday morning. Asilomar is a convention center that started out a century ago as a YWCA camp. A lot of rich women supported it and got Julia Morgan, who did Hearst’s Castle, to build some of the buildings. It’s a gorgeous place, if a bit rustic. I won’t have time for much doomscrolling.

Ha. Not in my neighborhood. I had an entire huge grocery bag full of candy. Even giving out just one fun sized piece each I ran out. I had to turn off the porch light and hide inside, all while hearing cars and trucks and screaming kids outside. It’s insanity. Probably at least 400 kids when I ran out of candy.
They are not all neighborhood kids, although some are. They’re from a wider area. Parents truck them in and turn them loose in our neighborhood. And some are adults who just show up to get free candy.
This year the worst “costume” was two 20-ish women who were in some kind of pajama bottoms and bras. Not sports bras. Regular bras. That didn’t seem to fit well. They came out of a poorly maintained sedan car that stayed running as they went to the various houses. It was a bit creepy.

Ha! On Lawrence O’Donnell I learned that Trump’s latest “whether women like it or not” blunder has brought back the Access Hollywood tape – and some of our new voters had never seen it! In 2016 they were too young and their parents kept it from them. A college girl posted the video on TikTok with the caption “Fathers are voting for this man”, and some celebrity (forget who) reposted to her millions of followers.

Oh, and the Halloween party we went to was fun! But also, apparently the 70s sit com Happy Days has almost totally receeded from memory, at least among that group (ages 25-70, but heavily 35-55). A Halloween party at a college professors house in a small town in WI draws quite a range of people!

They exited the car, went to the neighbor’s house, then came over to me, then got back in the car, which drove away. They didn’t have anything acknowledging the holiday, like a Halloween candy bag or anything resembling a costume. It was like the guy in the car sent them out to get candy. I was creeped out.

I don’t know what Biden said because I was not paying attention, but Dark Brandon always brings us gifts.
Oh! The Trump Oompa Loompa costume also had to do with Biden’s comment about garbage.
I had no clue.
Maybe I should read a political blog and try to keep up.
How I felt on the day of was that a ton of my friends – people who I respect a lot and who are great comedy writers – were just laid off, and at this point it was increasingly clear to me that this is not a management problem or a problem with the content that they are making. The problem was that the whole business model made no sense, as far as us just putting the stuff up on the internet and us being able to make a living on it. I was just angry and frustrated and sad that you can’t make cool shit for the internet anymore and make a living.
The whole story is basically that Facebook gets so much traffic that they started convincing publishers to post things on Facebook. For a long time, that was fine. People posted things on Facebook, then you would click those links and go to their websites. But then, gradually, Facebook started exerting more and more control of what was being seen, to the point that they, not our website, essentially became the main publishers of everyone’s content. Today, there’s no reason to go to a comedy website that has a video if that video is just right on Facebook. And that would be fine if Facebook compensated those companies for the ad revenue that was generated from those videos, but because Facebook does not pay publishers, there quickly became no money in making high-quality content for the internet.
And of course, it’s only gotten worse since then.
Grr…,
Scott.

@Urza: The AI has noticeably downgraded from Civ 4. Civ 5 was not as good, and Civ 6 supposedly was downright bad (it didn’t run properly on my Mac, so no personal experience). They’ve also moved back to city spam – with Civ 4 you always had to evaluate whether you could found another city; with Civ 5 there came a point (generally when you got an ideology) when you could spam away, and then with the Civ 5 spinoff Beyond Earth that point moved to the midgame.
I’ve had a lot of fun with Old World, which was designed by the Civ 4 lead designer. Civ 7 is on my “read the reviews” list in spite of the truly obscene amount of time I’ve spend playing the Civ series over the decades.
Intellectual Property theft is now a key bullet point in TechBro business plans. OpenAI – known primarily for ChatGPT – has flat out said they can’t make money if they can’t steal copyrighted materials.
I think that’s also what happened to a political hero from my younger days, Dennis Kucinich.

@Melancholy Jaques: Sorry if someone’s also explained this and I missed it upthread, but a couple of years ago, she wrote a doctoral thesis at Oxford looking at Victorian-era laws against homosexuality and claimed to find evidence that numerous individuals had been tried and executed for “sodomy.” Well, it turned out that the sentence handed down in most of the trial records — “death recorded” — did not mean they were summarily hanged, but that they were given more or less a suspended sentence with jail time in lieu of death. She had evidently missed this minor legal technicality in the course of her research and, perhaps more astonishingly, so did her readers, and it turned into a humiliating shitshow from which she never recovered. In several instances, she also seemed to claim that men accused of vicious child sex abuse were just being persecuted for homosexuality which was, likewise, not a terribly good look.

In the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Frodo becomes invisible when he puts the Ring on his finger. Well, at banks in the 1970s, this is basically what happened when a woman put a wedding ring on her finger. Her credit cards would no longer work, and the banks wouldn’t count her income as part of the household income. This led to a fight for women’s financial independence that gave rise to the landmark Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) and the creation of the first women’s banks.
In honor of the 50th anniversary of ECOA becoming law, we’re looking back at a time when women had to have their husband or father cosign on a credit application. What did it take to pass this landmark legislation? And how did it improve women’s lives in America?

@Origuy: wow, looking good! But why is there a stag’s head at the top of your sporran?
ETA: I saw an article yesterday that linked the #metoo to women’s reaction to Trump’s election and misogyny. The post which blew up #metoo was posted almost exactly a year after the Access Hollywood tape was released.
My thoughts for today. Nikki Haley made her very weird closing pitch for Donald Trump today in Pennsylvania. Which is made even more strange since from what she said the other day, she wasn’t invited by Trump to campaign for him, and even classified this as a fatal mistake.
She started with this: “You may find Trump noisy”. Considering this is the head of the political party she hopes to lead in 4 years and a man who has the power to destroy her politically, I’m going to say it is safe to say that ‘noisy’ is a political euphemism which means racist arrogant loudmouth dickhead. She actually has the audacity to basically say, don’t listen to him.
She continues with: “But he understands we’ve got to get this economy turned around,” Haley added. “He understands that we have to fight what’s happening across the border, he understands that we have to be energy dominant, and he understands that we can’t have any more wars.”
He understands we have to get the economy turned around? The economy is actually doing fairly good. Inflation is down. Interest rates are coming down. The stock market is strong. Unemployment is low. The economy doesn’t need to be turned around Gov Haley, it needs some good tweaking.
He understands we have to fight what is happening at the border, yet when congress tried to pass legislation to do just that, he killed it. And deporting millions and millions of people isn’t fighting what is happening at the border. It’s trying to undo that past.
He understands we need to be energy dominant. What the fuck does that mean? I’ve never heard that before. We’re no longer shooting for energy independence we’re now dominating Dominating who? Whom?
He understands we can’t have any more wars. That is a weird fucking flex considering a Democratic President hasn’t started a major war since the mid-1960s. Joe Biden has started 0 wars and ended 1. Seems like a pretty damn good record. No wait, I mean Kamala Harris has started 0 wars and ended 1. She’s been in charge the past 4 years right?
But we to give Gov. Haley credit, she’s working with some pretty weak source material with Donald Trump, but still her argument seems to be don’t pay attention to what Donald Trump says, he’s not really going to be President. He’ll just be our Manchurian candidate like the last time. He’s there to act as a figure head not really be the President and a distraction and exciter of the base while we pass more boilerplate pro-business, low corporate taxes anti-saving the planet Republican bullshit. Gov Haley, if people actually turned off their emotions, almost nobody would vote for Trump. Emotion is his whole schtick.

@Anoniminous: Rep. Max Miller’s Cleveland area district was represented by Republican Anthony Gonzalez until 2022. Gonzalez was a former Ohio State football star who entered politics after a career in the NFL.
Gonzalez was considered an “up-and-comer;” a bright, relatively young immigrants’ son. Gonzalez could have held that seat indefinitely, or maybe run for higher office, had he not voted to impeach Donald Trump after the January 6 Insurrection. The chilly reactione from district Republicans convinced Gonzalez1 he had no chance for renomination so he retired.
Gonzalez replacement Max Miller is a former Trump administration official with one redeeming feature: he’s a strong supporter of Ukraine.

It’s making me nuts that the media is all over Biden’s (who is not running for anything) ambiguous remark about garbage, while Trump said Liz Cheney should face a firing squad with 9 rifles aimed at her face, and for some reason that’s not considered too divisive. That’s just usual political rhetoric, blowing off the face of someone who criticized you. But how dare you say my supporters are garbage. What is happening?

When I called to set up utility service, the gas and electric companies wanted only my husband’s information. I told them he was not employed and I was, and I would be paying the bills. It mattered not to them; he was still the responsible party.
Well into the 1990s medical offices still recorded him as the “responsible party” for my medical bills, even though I had insurance through my employer and paid my own bills. I don’t know when that stopped. I argued with them to no avail that I was responsible for my own bills.
@dnfree: yeah, I was watching the Ken Burns documentary on Prohibition and I kept thinking that the USA would be better off if the temperance movement had sought financial independence for women instead of creating laws that didn’t work to prevent drinking

Oh, and the Halloween party we went to was fun! But also, apparently the 70s sit com Happy Days has almost totally receeded from memory, at least among that group (ages 25-70, but heavily 35-55). A Halloween party at a college professors house in a small town in WI draws quite a range of people!

@mrmoshpotato: Yeah, hopefully not. It was weird and creepy. There was a man in the car with the engine still running. These women were in some sort of loose pants/pajama pants and regular bras. They exited the car, went to the neighbor’s house, then came over to me, then got back in the car, which drove away. They didn’t have anything acknowledging the holiday, like a Halloween candy bag or anything resembling a costume. It was like the guy in the car sent them out to get candy. I was creeped out.

Surprised to learn Kucinich was running for Ohio 7th CD. Since the current incumbent GOP’er Max Miller won by 55.3% it’s another one of Dennis’ futile endeavors.

@HumboldtBlue: My husband started graduate school in 1968 and we moved to an apartment near the university.
