I’m not a doomer as I have been saying that Harris will win comfortably for awhile now, BUT if you think a landslide win of votes and electoral votes will dissuade Deadbeat Donald from crying steal, you are dead wrong.
IMO, a crushing victory for Harris will only be jumped on by the MAGAts/Republicans even more to claim the results are fraudulent. They will point to all the current polls and pundits who are saying that the race is virtually tied to say how could she then win by six or seven % points?
They may even have the chutzpah to say that they would have accepted a close loss (no, they wouldn’t) but just cannot believe a lopsided loss like this.

@Melancholy Jaques:
Consider ballot curing phone banking. Thanks to BR and WaterGirl for providing the link. This consists of calling those Democrats who have already voted but whose ballots have an issue that will result in their vote not being counted unless it’s fixed. Fortunately, most of these are easily fixed. What you’ll be doing is letting them know about the problem and telling them to get in touch with their location Election Commission to find out what the problem is and fix it. Sometimes, they can vote a provisional ballot on Election Day, if the absentee or mail-in ballot they submitted isn’t immediately fixable.
It’s more pleasant than regular phone-banking, since you’re calling people who have tried to vote and who want their votes counted. I did a couple of hours yesterday for Pennsylvania, and it was mostly a matter of leaving messages for the voter. Not at all unpleasant, and while sometimes people can get frustrated if they’ve gotten three or four calls, I didn’t encounter that.

I, too, am of the opinion that the uncertainty lies in the margin of victory for H/W, the control of Senate and House, and control of statehouses. I am not terribly concerned about a clear and outright victory for Orangina, Mountain Dew, and Odorous Musk.
My anxieties are all based around how much the inevitable fraud claims get distributed, and how large and well-organized the violent response to a Harris victory will be.
I am fully aware that election protection and law enforcement at federal, state, and local levels have been prepping response options. I am also aware that they are keeping those plans secret, so as not to provide the insurrectionists with free OSINT. Thus my anxiety is almost certainly overblown — but until events play out, I can’t know by how much.

This suggests two likely mechanisms: (1) stochastic terror/chaos actions by the indoctrinated, and (2) targeted attacks by committed fascists, whether foreign or domestic.

@Other MJS: Apparently Trump wanted to use the parking lot of the amphitheater but the State of New Mexico wouldn’t let him because rules, plus he still owes the City of Albuquerque half a mil from 2019 (a good part of it is accumulated interest). Individual-1 supporters are not mad at Individual-1 because of the parking mess, of course, they’re blaming the city and state authorities. Stupid motherfuckers. They’re just mad because they know how well Trump organizes return shuttles.
“The abandonment by the shuttles [at Coachella] echoed Trump’s 2020 campaign rallies, when his supporters were stranded at multiple events by the shuttle services and had to walk back to their vehicles alone, sometimes in freezing cold and snow.”

IMO SpaceX relies on government contracts much less than most casual observers claim. At the same time, there are innumerable regulatory and legal levers that could be brought to bear. The thing is, Kent makes a great point.
In 2020 the man was still the sitting POTUS until he finally left. He had to be convinced to leave. He tried a coup that didn’t quite work out for him, so he left to campaign again.
In 2024, Joe Biden has the reigns of the federal government until January, 2025. Convicted Felon Donald Trump does not hold any levers of power the same way he did 4 years ago.
While we can all have a lot of misgivings about what Biden has or hasn’t done, and Adam’s misgivings about people like Wray and Garland holding power and their ties to the Federalist Society and whatnot…
Biden is ultimately the CIC and in charge up until he hands over the keys to Kamala.
In such a scenario, “the coup would have to come from within the Biden White House” which…I just don’t see that happening, but I suppose someone, somewhere, has considered it “a possibility”.
If Trump is crushed by 350+ EV’s, I think even the vast majority of our shithole media will print some reasonably milquetoast “VP Harris Makes History” headline, and call it a day.
Some of them will obviously focus on what the Private Florida Man is doing or saying, but at this point, who the fuck cares?
He and his fascist backers can, and will, say and do what they are going to.
My only hope is that if things really go ‘sideways’
1) The Biden/Harris Admin does what needs to be done to defend the People’s Seat of Government, and
2) Ordinary Citizens do not let their actions stand, either.
TBD on both, obviously.
But CFDT not having the actual power of the federal government in his scrawny little hands does make a material difference to this election, in a good way.

@sab: I looked on my Craigslist to see if used phones or cameras might work and found something called an action camera with WiFi connection. It’s a camera for filming sports videos then uploading to the internet. Googling I found they go for around $35 new from Walmart. There are many. You use a memory chip. It’s kind of like a GoPro. Most of them are waterproof. They seem to use an ap. Not sure how your flip phone would like that but maybe you have a laptop or tablet? Trying camera WiFi on Walmart mostly brought up home security indoor monitors, which at first I thought no, but they are mostly $20 and use an ap too. They mention pet monitoring. Maybe if you can save the video (read packages) this would be a better way to get proof of life anyway. Then there are baby/pet monitors at about the same price which also connect to home WiFi.
if this doesn’t appeal, Craigslist does have old cameras and phones.People upgrade their phones by getting other peoples used ones. Also how about family? Maybe someone is getting ready to upgrade and you could get their non flip? If you want to and we’re thinking about it.

Chet Murthy
@different-church-lady: This a theory, and it is mine:
I think that we all fail to understand the ….. low-bandwidth nature of a mouse (or a touchscreen — same diff) as compared to a keyboard. And furthermore, computers -started out- with text-mode input, so everything has always been available via keyboard, even as many of the same things were available via mouse/screen. And last, the UI changes from version-to-version of these smartphone operating systems, whereas the text-mode commands ….. don’t change for literal human generations.
So when you master a thing from the keyboard, it stays mastered. When you master a thing on a UI (esp.smartphone) it might change next week, or next month, but for sure, within a year you gotta figure it all out from scratch. And this is true about desktop UIs too: from version to version of the KDE desktop, everything changes! A shit-ton changes from version-to-version of the Chromeos UI, too.

@karen marie: Ah …. well, I meant the keyboard commands that you dump into a terminal window. Not the “keyboard shortcuts” that companies put into UI programs — the ones that you can see in the drop-down menus. The “keyboard shortcuts” are every bit as changeable as the UIs themselves.
I started programming on CRT terminals, when 20 terminals would be connected via serial cables to a single computer that had a hundredth the power of the smartphone in my pocket, and we would do all our labs, including operating system emulators, on that one machine. So CLI (“command line interface”) was all we knew. And to this day, when it comes time to do something on my computer, if there’s a way to do it with a CLI, that’s how I do it

Less and less so. My latest phone (Pixel 7, so at least a year old) lacks one. My sib complains bitterly that all the late-model Android phones she can find lack the jack; she goes camping and likes to play music for hours at night. When she does that with a late-model Android phone, either with an adapter, or via Bluetooth, it drains the battery like nobody’s business. So she uses an old/old/old phone, but eventually it’ll die, and she can’t buy a replacement that’s that old. She is bitter.

@Chet Murthy: Very little in the way of software, outside of professional suites or complex line of business apps requires very much effort to figure out if you have a basic grasp on how to navigate common UX design patterns.
I will grant that getting to that point is not that much easier than learning a foreign language to the point of fluency, as opposed to memorizing stock phrases.
But you can give anyone who’s gotten that down in their bones novel software or significant UX changes and they can figure it out by playing with it for a few minutes. Unless it’s like Excel level complex or something
One of the problems with smartphone apps is that they aren’t very transparent, and the mobile operating systems are also very limited in terms of how users can interact with them, so stuff can break with no real way to tell if the issue is something you can troubleshoot or if it’s a bug that got pushed down in an update.

My horrible dog is lying on the floor beside me at my desk, sound asleep and dreaming about ripping open another garbage bag and spreading coffee grounds and egg shells all over the kitchen. I can tell because she’s making a pawing motion.
I’m very annoyed with her at the moment. Five years I’ve lived in this apartment, and five years I’ve hung doubled plastic grocery bags on one bottom cabinet handle for “wet” trash and another bottom cabinet handle for recycling. Yesterday, after I fell and broke my wrist, she decided to destroy the “wet” trash bag. Not just once, not just twice, but three fucking times. Why? Why would she do this? She’s 15 years old, and I have NEVER had trouble with her about trash.
This afternoon, after I had solved the problem by relocating the “wet” trash (now in a small bin), she started tearing at the recycling bag! I rinse everything, so there’s nothing delicious in there. A few months ago, when I described some new somewhat peculiar change in behavior, her vet said she may be in the early stages of dementia. Could that be what’s driving her sudden interest in trash diving?
different-church-lady
@Chet Murthy: Camping? I do it occasionally and I’ve noticed that when I’m in areas of fringe reception it’s the constant searching for cell reception combined with cold that are the things that zap the battery. I finally solved it by putting the phone in airplane mode overnight.

When he got bought, the company hired a real UX designer, and when she saw what I’d written, she asked my friend if she could keep a copy, to use as an example of how NOT to design any UI ever, ever, EVER. *grin
