A pigeon! It’s one of the official birds of NYC!
The other, of course, is 🖕

@libraryguy: You are ready to drive in LA, with the notable exception that a proper “commentary on driving skills” in LA is a double barrel blast while driving with your knees.
ETA: Also, horn. The shortest time duration discovered by science is the time in LA from the light turning green to the hole behind honking his or her horn if you don’t hit the gas. It’s almost always a Guy, however.
Yes, I am an LA refugee.

OT. The elder teen has pneumonia :-( Poor thing is having rough autumn. First influenza, now this. They are so bummed to missing school and their activities. Younger teen has retained his his health, and is happily taking advantage of sickness in the house to play Civ VI all day.

I voted on Halloween, and all’s I got was this boring “Duval County” job up above!
Sorry I moved out of NY now……………..
KrackenJack
Sadly Cali – or at least the county I live in – has done the fiscally responsible thing and printed the same boring sticker year after year. At one point I had a ring of them on the wall behind my chair like the EU flag. Raised some questions on my video calls.
pacem appellant
@KrackenJack: Our Santa Clara County sticker was so boring the teen didn’t even want it for their sticker collection. And they take most stickers!

There are older women canvassing my neighborhood today.

@KrackenJack: Yeah, ours are always boring. I still put it on, but I wish we could have fun with them.
Harrison Wesley
Here in Manatee County they have some sort of school competition for the election-sticker design. I think it’s a nice idea, but they should put a bit more thought into the adhesive – I wore mine to the Wednesday voter greeting and the wind blew it off and away as soon as I stepped off the bus. No biggie; a very minor annoyance.
Chet Murthy
@pacem appellant: SF’s this cycle is very colorful, with lots of SF-specific artwork. I love it! I put it on the center of the top lid of my laptop, where I always put my “I voted” stickers. Sadly, since I never go to coffeeshops anymore, I can’t show it off. Sigh.
WaterGirl
Okay, i have to say that this one is adorable!
WaterGirl
@WaterGirl: What exact animal is that, and is it the Richmond, VA mascot? Or city animal?
SiubhanDuinne
WG, just sent you a photo of my sticker, with my commentary if you care to include it. It’s neither cute nor clever, but it’s very nice.
Chet Murthy
@WaterGirl: that is a completely adorable sticker. I want to save at the animal’s a dog, but with the whiskers it doesn’t seem like. Maybe a mouse? Or a rat?
Betty Cracker
One bummer about voting by mail is that you don’t get a sticker. They should enclose one with the ballot, dammit!
As I mentioned in a prior thread, I’m watching college football, and there are wall-to-wall political ads. I flip Trump and Rick Scott off every time their hideous mugs appear onscreen.
@pacem appellant: That sucks! Hope the kid recovers quickly!

@Betty Cracker: Whaaaaat? You don’t get a sticker with your mail-in ballot? Injustice!
Stacy
@WaterGirl: It’s an opossum, ubiquitous in Richmond and the city’s unofficial mascot. My daughter votes by mail and Virginia sends out the standard state-shaped voter sticker with the ballot. She’s miffed that she missed out on this one. A Virginia Commonwealth University arts student’s winning design.

To my knowledge not all WA counties have enclosed voting stickers in the VBM envelopes. It was the campaign promise for one candidate to restore them as auditor for elections as they had fond memories of wearing them.

@WaterGirl: I got a sticker like that Thursday when I voted early at the Greene County, Virginia registrar’s office, except it had “2024” at the bottom.
Some Republican must own the property opposite the registrar’s office, because it was full of signs for Trump, Senate candidate Hung Cào and House candidate Derrick Anderson.
There were also handmade signs saying “Vindman is a Globalist Shill” and “Vindman 4 Endless War.” Eugene Vindman is the Democrat running in the 7th CD. The seat is open this year because Rep. Abigail Spanberger is retiring in order to focus on her 2025 campaign for Governor.

A woman showed up to vote early at a New Jersey polling spot wearing a MAGA cap and t shirt. She was asked to remove the cap and get a jacket to cover up her t shirt. Instead she ripped off the t shirt and voted just with her bra on top. Not a pretty sight as she was probably in her 60s and overweight. After voting she called the election workers the c word and gave them the finger. Typical class-less trump supporter. I don’t drive near as much as I used to (is that a sigh of relief that I hear from the cheap seats????) but I still do on occasion, because the bus system where I live seems to employe drivers who never want to have a paying customer board a bus. And as an old, I’m getting past the age of actually wanting to drive. Anywhere. We have a local transit bus system but the route I live on seems to have a few drivers who hate other human beings and refuse to stop and pick them up. The other day I watched one driver not stop for an senior woman who was using a walker – she tried to flag down the bus, I waved as well so that he couldn’t say he didn’t see anyone, but he just drove on by. I filed a complaint. At this point I hope the asshole gets fired. Out of a cannon and into a brick wall if possible…
As a senior who has been one for a while and who still walks a couple miles at a time, which used to be like twice as much per day and more days per week, and one who really wants to be a good driver I am slowing down and not being so active. I ride the bus and electric transit train here in LA rather than drive as much as I used to and will likely sell my car in the not all that distant future. Making the world better for all of us….. Most of us get old, some do it sooner than others but all of us still breathing do. I’ve watched this happen for most of my life. First my grandparents generation, those born in the 1800s, then my parents generation, born in the early 1900s and now my generation, born late in the first half of the 1900s and a bit into the second half. We have dramatically better health care, more knowledge of medicine and better aging, but still we all do it. Have a cousin that made 6 months, a cousin that made it to about 70 and a parent that made it to 95 (the day before actually, I give credit on occasion) and I’m now the oldest in the extended 4 families.
SomeRandomGuy

Now, it’s not an award sticker for keeping your desk tidy for a whole week, it’s something much bigger, and more important, and when it really, really, matters, at least we still remember the tiny bit of pride in a valueless prize for extremely meaningful work – it’s the work that makes it valuable, not the prize itself.
Any artist out there want to make a “Not even the FLOOD kept me from voting!!!” sticker for BC?

@WaterGirl:
I love that ad. I read somewhere recently that that message – that Trump’s own administrations – was the most effective with “undecided” voters.
Did the pick him because he is liked by us boomers?
Do you think the ad is most directed at older white people?
Is it running on TV or cable?

@Geminid:
They think this is going to be just like “deplorable,” don’t they?
Sorry, cupcakes. The candidate you’re running against is Kamala Harris, and she’s not going to give you any cheap shots.
Every day I’m more astonished, seriously, at the grace and poise this woman brought to meet this moment in her life and in our history. It’s got to be driving trump out of his fucking mind how made-for-tv she really is.

@hitchhiker: Some Republicans definitely think this will sink Harris.
Maybe not Youngkin though. Youngkin is a political chameleon whose superpower is being all things to all people. He’s been working on a 2028 Presidential run ever since the night he beat beat Terry McAuliffe in 2021, and this is just more positioning towards that end.

@Geminid:
What are you referring to that they think will sink Harris?
Geminid
@WaterGirl: I was referring to President Biden’s comments about garbage. Republicans are saying Biden called Trump supporters “garbage.” He in fact didn’t, but they’re acting like this will damage Harris’s campaign in a major way.
Some of them believe it. I have a landscape customer who told me so on Wednesday. She’s convinced Trump will win and this “garbage” thing will be one of the reasons.

@Geminid: Thanks for clarifying.

Michigan had a contest to choose the “I Voted” stickers. At one of the early voting centers in East Lansing, Michigan, I got the one showing the words “I Voted”, with a male deer wearing chromatic sunglasses and a green and white hat marked “Michigan” on the bill with a map of Michigan on the top panel. It was created by high school student Michelle Lekhtman of West Bloomfield, a student at West Bloomfield High School.

@Kent: Didn’t get an “I voted” sticker in ours either (Whatcom county, WA). Spousal Unit and I voted quite a while ago at this point, pretty soon after the ballots arrived.

I misread that as “Itanium prosthesis” at first, and was weirded out for a moment. (This one is only for certain kinds of computer folks….)
