Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

You cannot shame the shameless.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Everybody saw this coming.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Petty moves from a petty man.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Bark louder, little dog.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

This is from NYC.  I think that’s some kind of bird trick or treating?

Anyone else get any cool stickers?  Send me a pic if you want to share.

@libraryguy: You are ready to drive in LA, with the notable exception that a proper “commentary on driving skills” in LA is a double barrel blast while driving with your knees.

ETA: Also, horn. The shortest time duration discovered by science is the time in LA from the light turning green to the hole behind honking his or her horn if you don’t hit the gas. It’s almost always a Guy, however.

Yes, I am an LA refugee.

Sadly Cali – or at least the county I live in – has done the fiscally responsible thing and printed the same boring sticker year after year. At one point I had a ring of them on the wall behind my chair like the EU flag. Raised some questions on my video calls.

Here in Manatee County they have some sort of school competition for the election-sticker design.  I think it’s a nice idea, but they should put a bit more thought into the adhesive – I wore mine to the Wednesday voter greeting and the wind blew it off and away as soon as I stepped off the bus.  No biggie; a very minor annoyance.

Over the 40 years that I’ve been voting in Georgia, it’s been interesting and encouraging to see the text change. For years it was English only. Then, perhaps 10-15 years ago, they added Spanish. And now the sticker says “I VOTED” in five tongues — English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and two Asian languages I am unfamiliar with (Japanese and Mandarin, perhaps? I know several commenters will provide the correct information). It’s a kick to see Officialdom be so deliberately inclusive. Not what I would have predicted for this state, and I’m happy to have been wrong.

Just sent this to WaterGirl, but I figure I’ll post it here, too. (also linked on bsky, for anyone who follows me there)

Dan Shafer put out a long read on my neck of the woods (NE WI), and it included some quotes from the Green Bay area candidates we had in the downballot thermometer.

    https://www.therecombobulationarea.news/p/joy-desperation-fox-valley-wisconsin-election-2024

I was there to meet with two candidates for State Assembly — Ryan Spaude (running in the 89th) and Christy Welch (running in the 88th). We sat down at a table in the building’s basement, in a wood-paneled room that felt much like any church basement you might find in the region.

I asked Welch about how she was feeling the day after the campaign rally.

“I heard a phrase last night that I like,” she said. “I was saying ‘cautiously optimistic,’ but now ‘nauseously optimistic.’… That’s a better summary of my feelings. You obviously don’t ever want to take anything for granted based on how you’re feeling. And there’s not a ton of real-time data to be able to look at. So we’re just nauseously optimistic, doing what we need to do.”

Earlier that morning, a few blocks away, I’d met with Kristin Lyerly, an OB/GYN who is running for Congress, at a coffee shop on Broadway. She’d been one of the speakers at the Harris rally the night before, stepping out to a huge ovation. She talks about people being ready for this moment, comparing it to Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign, “but,” she adds, “with a hint of desperation.”

The nausea in the optimism, the desperation in the joy. Green Bay area Democrats understand all too well just how precarious this moment is for their community, and for the state at large.

There’s plenty more (it’s long!), but I think that nauseous optimism is how I’m feeling, so l am totally stealing that term until we know the outcome got Tuesday.

@WaterGirl: I got a sticker like that Thursday when I voted early at the Greene County, Virginia registrar’s office, except it had “2024” at the bottom.

Some Republican must own the property opposite the registrar’s office, because it was full of signs for Trump, Senate candidate Hung Cào and House candidate Derrick Anderson.

There were also handmade signs saying “Vindman is a Globalist Shill” and “Vindman 4 Endless War.” Eugene Vindman is the Democrat running in the 7th CD. The seat is open this year because Rep. Abigail Spanberger is retiring in order to focus on her 2025 campaign for Governor.

One thing I read in the Post today, confirmed my thought that trump has the same people showing up at all his rallies

Donald Trump made an extended digression about “the women of North Carolina,” referring to a group of female fans who have been following him around the country.

For a moment, Trump couldn’t find them in the crowd, at his rally in Gastonia. “Where are they?” he asked.

He touted the number of rallies the North Carolina women have attended, then said, “There’s no way they’re not here…. Where the hell are they, put up your hand!”

A woman showed up to vote early at a New Jersey polling spot wearing a MAGA cap and t shirt. She was asked to remove the cap and get a jacket to cover up her t shirt. Instead she ripped off the t shirt and voted just with her bra on top. Not a pretty sight as she was probably in her 60s and overweight. After voting she called the election workers the c word and gave them the finger. Typical class-less trump supporter. (Don’t complain I assumed women in their 60s are unattractive as I am 67 myself and know the reality)

Also the Washington Post which costs $120 for an annual subscription is now offering them for $29. Sounds desperate.

I amazed just seeing all the stickers – it’s compulsory to vote where I live – rather than getting a sticker for voting, you get a fine for not voting. Saves masses of money in regard to GOTV. Only people who advertise voting is the Electoral Commission!

So Trump just took the stage at the Salem, Virginia Civic Center. He was over 90 minutes late, with another rally in North Carolina to go to afterwards.

Glenn Youngkin entertained the crowd while it waited by talking about what a great campaign Trump has run. Youngkin said that when he saw Trump wearing that garbage man’s safety vest, he knew he would win. What a suck-up.

    @Dangerman:

I don’t drive near as much as I used to (is that a sigh of relief that I hear from the cheap seats????) but I still do on occasion, because the bus system where I live seems to employe drivers who never want to have a paying customer board a bus. And as an old, I’m getting past the age of actually wanting to drive. Anywhere. We have a local transit bus system but the route I live on seems to have a few drivers who hate other human beings and refuse to stop and pick them up. The other day I watched one driver not stop for an senior woman who was using a walker – she tried to flag down the bus, I waved as well so that he couldn’t say he didn’t see anyone, but he just drove on by. I filed a complaint. At this point I hope the asshole gets fired. Out of a cannon and into a brick wall if possible…

As a senior who has been one for a while and who still walks a couple miles at a time, which used to be like twice as much per day and more days per week, and one who really wants to be a good driver I am slowing down and not being so active. I ride the bus and electric transit train here in LA rather than drive as much as I used to and will likely sell my car in the not all that distant future. Making the world better for all of us….. Most of us get old, some do it sooner than others but all of us still breathing do. I’ve watched this happen for most of my life. First my grandparents generation, those born in the 1800s, then my parents generation, born in the early 1900s and now my generation, born late in the first half of the 1900s and a bit into the second half. We have dramatically better health care, more knowledge of medicine and better aging, but still we all do it. Have a cousin that made 6 months, a cousin that made it to about 70 and a parent that made it to 95 (the day before actually, I give credit on occasion) and I’m now the oldest in the extended 4 families.

@Betty Cracker: Washington (state) includes stickers.

It’s funny, in a way: most of us stopped caring about “STICKERS!” by the 6th or 7th grade (and we stopped showing enthusiasm earlier, even if we kept on collecting and using them quietly).

Now, it’s not an award sticker for keeping your desk tidy for a whole week, it’s something much bigger, and more important, and when it really, really, matters, at least we still remember the tiny bit of pride in a valueless prize for extremely meaningful work – it’s the work that makes it valuable, not the prize itself.

Any artist out there want to make a “Not even the FLOOD kept me from voting!!!” sticker for BC?

Sorry, cupcakes. The candidate you’re running against is Kamala Harris, and she’s not going to give you any cheap shots.

Every day I’m more astonished, seriously, at the grace and poise this woman brought to meet this moment in her life and in our history. It’s got to be driving trump out of his fucking mind how made-for-tv she really is.

@hitchhiker: Some Republicans definitely think this will sink Harris.

Maybe not Youngkin though. Youngkin is a political chameleon whose superpower is being all things to all people. He’s been working on a 2028 Presidential run ever since the night he beat beat Terry McAuliffe in 2021, and this is just more positioning towards that end.

@WaterGirl: I was referring to President Biden’s comments about garbage. Republicans are saying Biden called Trump supporters “garbage.” He in fact didn’t, but they’re acting like this will damage Harris’s campaign in a major way.

Some of them believe it. I have a landscape customer who told me so on Wednesday. She’s convinced Trump will win and this “garbage” thing will be one of the reasons.

Michigan had a contest to choose the “I Voted” stickers.  At one of the early voting centers in East Lansing, Michigan, I got the one showing the words “I Voted”, with a male deer wearing chromatic sunglasses and a green and white hat marked “Michigan” on the bill with a map of Michigan on the top panel.  It was created by high school student Michelle Lekhtman of West Bloomfield, a student at West Bloomfield High School.

A friend of mine is an amputee. He has a new titanium prosthesis. His sticker is on his new “leg.”

I misread that as “Itanium prosthesis” at first, and was weirded out for a moment. (This one is only for certain kinds of computer folks….)
