As many of you know, I have been fostering a cat for three months for a friend of the family who had a mental health crisis, and I have not talked about her (the cat) much or shared a lot of pictures for one simple reason. Here it is:
I knew that if I showed that little angel to you all that you would become absolutely insufferable and demand that I keep her forever, which I could not do because it is not my cat and because I am running at capacity with just enough left for an emergency stray. The picture does not do her eyes justice- they are sometimes half the size of her head they are so big and she is so adorable. And she is so tiny- only 8-10 lbs. Just a precious angel.
At any rate, I gave her to my sister today to keep until our friend has a new place, so I felt it was safe to share the picture with you.
I took an edible and picked up chinese so now all there is to do is sit and wait and stress.
Baud
You could take another edible.

I just have not had any luck with edibles. I’ve tried them several times and my experience has always been “nothing for four hours and then my legs go numb and I can’t walk straight.” I use a tincture about 3 times a week on the soles of my feet when my neuropathy is keeping me awake at night, but I’ve never had the experience of being relaxed and mellow as a result of taking marijuana in any form.
(Smoking it has always been right out bc of asthma.)

So…around what time do we start getting the first maybe-sorta-possible state results coming in? I always seem to block this part out after every election, and being on the West Coast I never know when anything starts happening on the other side of the country.

The polls won’t close on the West Coast, Hawaii and Alaska for many hours after the East Coast. Getting home after your blood work is a fine time to fix a nice mimosa to celebrate (we hope, we hope) with your breakfast.

I gave one ride to the polls in my 4 hour shift. It was a doozy (and, at least as of 35 mins after shift end, unsuccessful). Late 70s woman with a cane, who I’ll guess emigrated from a Caribbean country decades ago. She’d been trying to vote for quite a while when I got the call asking me to drive her from one polling place to another.
That was the easy part. Once at the new (correct) location, she wasn’t registered, despite saying to me in the car that she’d voted for years at the old location. This is likely true. She moved three blocks, and this part of Mpls has had a lot of new apt. buildings built, so precincts shift.
Alas, she didn’t have an updated MN non-driver’s ID (though it was still valid as proof of identity). She had no idea she needed a bill, statement or lease to prove her address. All this took a long time because she was a rather circular thinker, and spoke in a pidgin English that was just discernible.
I say all this because her multi-hour odyssey and determination to a) be taken seriously by the (very patient and kind) poll workers and b) hours of her time to do this says “Voting is truly important. People stick with it because they know it matters. Even in a pretty securely blueish state.
(I handed her off back at her apt. to find a bill. The ride coordinator promised to find her another ride, and given the number of ppl who signed up, I’m confident that if she got the needed document, she’d get the ride.)

The last time I tried weed was more than 50 years ago. Used it a couple of time and had little to no reaction. Then had a big reaction, but didn’t enjoy it. I was with a new boyfriend who later told me that his source, who we were smoking with and who he had known throughout school maybe laced the pot with, something else, so the out of control feeling that I didn’t want may not have been the pot itself. Anyway, I didn’t enjoy it, my BF was willing to not use and then we never knew anyone to buy from anyway. I’ve thought about getting some edibles, but I have to drive my grandson to school tomorrow and since I have NO idea how I will react, I’m holding off. @Trivia Man: The two Virginia districts are the 2nd and 7th CDs.
The 2nd is currently held by Republican Jen Kiggans, who beat Rep. Elaine Luria by 3-4 percentage points in 2022. It’s a coastal district anchored by Virginia Beach. Luria declined a rematch* and Democrats nominated Missy Cotter Smasol(sp?) to challenge Kiggans. Like Luria and Kiggans, Smasol is a retired Navy officer.
The 7th CD includes the populous I-95 corridor between Prince Wiiliam County in the north and Fredericksburg to the south. It runs west to the Blue Ridge, but 65% of its voters live along the I-95 corridor.
Abigail Spanberger won the 7th by over 4 points in 2022, but she retired in order to run for Governor next year. Retired Army colonel Eugene Vindman is tbe Democrstic candidate this time. Vindman is very well-funded and should win. If the race is close that might spell trouble for Democrats elsewhere.
Some New York districts like Republican Mike William’s seat in the Syracuse area could also be good indicators
* I could see why Elaine Luria stepped back from politics. Luria entered the Naval Academy when she was 17, and after graduation and 20 year’s service she jumped right into her 2018 Congressional race and fought two more closely contested races after that one. Luria has two kids in public schools and I’m glad she can spend more time with her family.

As previously noted, VA07 being vacated by Abigail Spanberger (D) to run for Governor next year, and VA02 currently held by Jen Kiggans (R) who narrowly beat Elaine Luria of J6 Cmte fame in 2022.
Missy Cotter-Smasal is the (D) in the 2nd, and she’s more or less got the same resume that Luria did before her term.
Recent polling had Kiggans drop from +5 to only +1. If this is indeed a wave election, I suspect it could pull Cotter-Smasal over the line.
I don’t know much about VA07 other than Vindman’s brother is running against a guy who faked a family photo, so I’d be shocked if he didn’t win.

Proud you’re fostering a kitty, and no, I’d never encourage keeping a foster kitty, especially for someone having mental health issues on any level. Even someone just too stressed from work would feel it was a massive betrayal of trust!
Remember: stress is normal, but, worrying too much is borrowing misery from tomorrow, okay, when you’ve got plenty enough today; and tomorrows misery still gets paid back, with interest. That doesn’t mean “don’t stress or you’re a bad person.” It means “don’t stress if you can avoid it.”
If you vape, it will help more than an edible – it kicks in faster, and helps keep you feeling like “it’s okay, if I need a bit more help, I can take another puff.” Kind of like those patient controlled pain med devices. Edibles kick in slowly, and have a relatively smoother high, but, vaping lasts for an hour or more, and kick in within seconds-to-minutes.
I have faith in America, but, like you, I’m scared. Time was, I thought I might try out Canada, but I’m disabled, and unable to work. I was a good enough techie… but, I’m not any more. (I loved Canada. I loved that I kept getting asked what province I was from – no “ugly American” vibes! They feel more like my people, except, America is my *home*. Canada is that lovely place up north, with wonderful people.)
I feel so nakedly helpless. I can’t donate money – I’m hoping I’m judged disabled, because I most emphatically am, but, until then, who knows how long what I have has to last? I can’t donate *time*. I’m in constant pain, and that steals away almost all of my time.
So I’m hopeful, but all the things I can do to encourage hope in myself, I can’t do those. So I’m also hoping my other coping holds out, which it has for more years than it should have, so, yeah, hopeful.

Looks like final total might be 80-85% turnout in Philly alone. 2020 was ~67%

@hrprogressive: I think you will be proven right about the 7th, but I’d bet very few voters know about Derrick Anderson’s “family” photo. That kind of story has much more prominence in places like Balloon Juice than among the general electorate. I don’t think Eugene Vindman even addressed it because he had better and more substantive issues to pound.
Ed. Vindmsn had plenty of money with which to pound issues like abortion rights. He is well-ntworked nationally and raised over $6 million. That’s a couple million more than Mary Peltola, who was the second best funded among battleground district Democrats.

It came up enough that Anderson’s Campaign sent a cease and desist order.

Has it been called yet?

@Sister Golden Bear: Alas, this is why the bogeyman of the Republican Party, “regulation,” is so important.
I saw a fascinating story about how a method of securing mines, roof bolts (I think) were introduced. Mining bosses decided to put in just enough roof bolts to replace the timbers… at the same projected rate of cave-ins. They just took the cash savings – they didn’t cut the savings *some* to make mines safer.
People won’t do that, not on their own – we know that. You can’t trust people to be good, that’s why you have good laws and good people enforcing them.

Judge Baker told the court that not only would he be violating Georgia voters constitutional rights if he granted the RNC’s request, he “would only be invalidating votes from the select counties that plaintiffs have cherry-picked based on nothing more than the past political preferences of the citizens in those counties.”
adding that the RNC was attempting to “tip the scales of this election by discriminating against [counties] less likely to vote for their candidate.”

@SomeRandomGuy: The mine roof bolt story was from the WaPo in a series on what government does. It followed one employee of the Mine Safety Administration. The series was put together by Michael Lewis.

@Jay: Yeah, now I see Anderson tried to get a cease and desist order against an ad Vindman’s campaign aired that showed Anderson sitting down to dinner with cardboard cut-outs of his imaginary wife and kids. Vindman has also brought the issue as a reflection on Anderson’s general credibility. It might be worth a point or two.

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Thanks for that. I can get Freevee on Prime, I think, but that’s pretty weird if the episodes are always running and you can’t pick or choose.
Disappointed. It seems like that would be a good show to play at night on my iPad as I fall asleep.

Killing time until the Tuesday session at the Irish pub in downtown San Jose. They’ll probably have sports on the TVs, but the WiFi is pretty good. Pro tip: if you’re at an Irish pub with WiFi, the password is probably “guinness”. Better hanging out there than at home.

@zhena gogolia: It’s actually quite good, although I feel a bit guilty watching it. Johnson is just as handsome and charming as ever, and I love the luxury surroundings on the boat. We have taken two Viking cruises and are spoiled for that kind of nautical voyage.

Guys? I’m starting to fret about Georgia.

@JoyceH: There’s nothing you can do to change the outcome in Georgia, so maybe step away from the TV. BTW, love your Regency Mage series.
