The seven pm polls have closed, and Vermont went for Harris, Kentucky and Indiana for Trump.
This is when I am the most fragile on election night because a lot of the red vote from rural areas comes in faster and the infamous red mirage appears. This couple of hours between now and 10 pm est are nerve-wracking.

I just listened to Maddow for about 47 straight seconds right now, and my blood pressure jumped into the “are your affairs in order?” range.
No country for old men, indeed.
David 🐝KHive🐝 Koch
Remember Dee Snider the singer from Twisted Sister in the 1980s heavy metal rock group.
He’s a republican and his comes from a republican family, well he posted that he and his father for Kamala today!
ArchTeryx
@dr. bloor: Why? This early nobody knows anything. What did Maddow say that was so scary?
PaulWartenberg
I have to close up my library over the next half-hour and then drive home. I’m going to do my best to not listen or watch ANYTHING until maybe 10pm. Maybe not at all. My nerves are shot.

Fucking NBC is going on about Harris underperforming Biden in various Florida counties and in some county in some other state. Sorry, I turned it off at that point so I don’t know which one.
I think I’m going to do some shredding or sort out some piles of administrative crap. I can’t take this.

Republican Governor of Vermont voted for Harris — “Country over party”, he explained. (He voted for Biden in 2020, also.)

John, thank you for building this blog and community.
I saw a last-minute $15,000 thermometer collect $30,000+ in donations downstairs.
I love you jackals.

@David 🐝KHive🐝 Koch:
Republican governor of Vermont said he voted for Harris when he exited after voting.
*******
I am feeling very confident that Harris will take NC.
Ohio Mom
@ArchTeryx: Maybe because it suddenly feels too real?
I’ve been doing my best to compartmentalize the election. I’ve been proud of how well I put it out of my mind for hours at a time.
But now those walks have crumbled.
japa21
I am sure Trump is already calling for the counting to be stopped.

@David 🐝KHive🐝 Koch:
In one of the previous posts, people were asking if there are any decent Republicans left. It occurs to me that Snider (of all people) might be the last of them.
Apparently the rest of the band are committed liberals and gave him shit for authorizing Trump’s use of the song “We’re not gonna take it”. Snider apparently thought it was hilarious because it makes a better pro-choice anthem. The first lyrics are literally “We’ve got the right to choose and there ain’t no way we’ll lose it”.

This guy knows Florida pretty well. Encouraging.

Two expats we know who are registered in PA were notified that their ballots are being challenged.

@Ohio Mom:
I’ve been so calm today I’ve been wondering if this is what dissociating feels like. Not to worry, I’m back to feeling the anxiety now.
Baud
@Gin & Tonic:
Yeah, they’ve been doing that in PA.
RaflW
@Yarrow: WaPo election shift map has Miami-Dade at 80% counted, and a shockingly big shift towards Trump. That last 20% of ballots needs to be miraculous (I have no expectation that FL won’t be GOP, but the shits look horrifying all across the state).
Quinerly
@RaflW:
Hispanic men.

@RaflW:
Doesn’t really matter how much we lose FL by, but disappointing news for a once fine state.

@David 🐝KHive🐝 Koch:
I’ve been following him on Twitter for years and I’ve never seen anything other than staunch support for Dems and liberal ideals.
Elsewhere, I may have found a jackal in the wild. I think Beverley Turner, 51, speaks for all of us when it comes to voting and Trump.
Yarrow
@RaflW: Florida looks like a shit show.

I’m extremely glad to not be watching any network news.

I just added an Election Resources section in the sidebar – just above recent comments.
Let me know if there are other good resources to add.

@Maxim: Me too.
Maxim
I don’t know how Florida counts its votes. Do they process early votes as they come in, or wait until today? They’ve supposedly reported 80% of the vote already, which seems extremely fast.
Quinerly
@Maxim:
Florida just called for Trump.
Citizen Alan
@Chris: I was struck earlier by how eerily calm I was feeling. Now the anxiety is kicking back in, manly b/c of the early Red Mirage. Think I’ll take a Klonapin before I go out for sushi w/ friends and try not to think about the End of Days.
Maxim
@Quinerly: Ugh.
Quinerly
@Maxim:
Also called for Rick Scott. Florida is always a huge disappointment.
Chris Johnson
@dm: Aw, that’s nice of him. I don’t vote for him but he’s not a MAGA. I didn’t have the usual Dem to vote for, instead… a black Haitian immigrant woman.
kaCHINGG. very little research and voted SO HARD for her. Hope she’s good. The current Governor is very good for a non-MAGA Republican.
Maxim
@Quinerly: Always. <sigh>
Betty
@Gin & Tonic: I am an ex pat registered in PA so that frightened me enough to go check my email. Seems okay for now. I vote in a relatively small county so I hope they remember me from past elections. Not sure how I could respond to a challenge.

@RaflW: It’s those Latinos. Sorry to say, but in my experience they are racist and sexist.

Seriously? Don’t watch. Let yourself turn on the news in two hours. Right now, there’s lots of polls closing, and projections being made, but, THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN CONTROL.
Watching what you can’t control can be a pain, so, go play some Minecraft, or StarCraft, or WarCraft, if they’ve come up with a decent Warcraft past III. (WoW? Windows on Windows? Oh, WORLD of WARCRAFT. I thought that was just on a South Park episode….)
SomeRandomGuy
@Citizen Alan: Distraction is the primary method of emotional management, and I know it’s hard not to watch every minute of the open heart surgery, but, they haven’t even cracked the rib cage, metaphorically speaking. If you *can* distract yourself, including with chemical help, seriously, do it.
You can also try surfing above the emotional turmoil, not letting it infect you, but, I mean, wow, talk about advanced topics! (And being able to do so often includes chemical assistance, at least in pain management!) It involves understanding your emotions are purely biochemical reactions generated by your thoughts and memories and your acute stressors, and really believing it.
So: distract. Laugh if you can. Confidently predict that you are as sure of good news, as you are for your love for your best friends. Watch an engrossing movie. For good or ill, tomorrow will bring its own miseries, so don’t borrow from them early.
