Chyron says Clinton/Obama primary, so obviously early or mid 2008. Doesn’t ring much of a bell beyond that, except of course there was much agita at the time. Seems almost quaint now.

We need more drunken calls to morning Joe. I’m hoping Biden makes one tomorrow morning after we get a big helping of good news tonight.

Went to the grocery store and ran into three neighbors, which almost never happens. One was wearing a Harris-Walz shirt. Eight bottles of wine in his cart. We were stress bonding when another neighbor showed up and we added her to the group. Then the third neighbor wandered by, cart filled with goodies. We were all comparing what we had in our carts that we thought would get us through the stress of (hopefully only) tonight. The stress out there is real.

Clinton/Obama was the first U.S. (primary) election in which I was eligible to vote, and I chose not to vote. Seriously, I didn’t see the point. Their policy positions were pretty much the same and largely agreeable to me (or at least as agreeable to me as anyone who could actually get elected in 2008 America was likely to be). Obama had less baggage than Clinton, but that’s because he was brand-new on the national scene and therefore had less experience, so it kind of canceled out.
Naturally, I voted for Obama in the general, and would’ve voted for Clinton just as happily.
(It was also the election where I shed any kind of Sorkinian bipartisan notions I might have had. At the very beginning of the year, I was still just politically uneducated enough to buy the whole image of McCain the Bipartisan Wonderboy. By the end of the year, I was very much cured. “This is the best they can do? THIS? No thanks.”)

I am way too stressed to enjoy food or drink right now.
I mean, I am eating my lunch, but it’s more like fueling than enjoying a meal.
In recent years, I have gone almost entirely alcohol-free. Not out of any specific reason. More like just not enjoying it as much.

The first time I voted for President it was George McGovern vs Richard Nixon – 1972. I could have voted in 1968 but I was in SE Asia in the Air Force. McGovern was the peace candidate and he lost in a land slide.
It was bad, but not as sphincter-tightening as today. There’s not much else to say … Trump & Vance are psychopaths. Losing is not an option.

Semi-relatedly: This can be a hard stretch for folks in recovery. I’m going to my Tuesday night AA meeting at 7pm CST, followed by dinner out with several group members. I’m sure I’ll look at my phone some while we wait for the food to arrive, since by 8 CST some news will come in.
But I worked hard to put together 22+ years of pretty contented sobriety, and there’s no f’ing way the GOP will take that away from me.
If anyone in BJ land is 24 hours sober, or 24 weeks, or 24 years, hang on. Go to a meeting (in person or online). Call a friend (in the program or not) and just shoot the shit or bare your soul, whatever you need.
For you normie drinkers: Enjoy. A little less moderation once in a while is ok. But please, don’t over do it. Your liver is your friend. Be nice. :)

Also, I voted early, so I scheduled my flu shot for this morning (a couple weeks later than ideal, but still likely well timed).
Older man who got called from reception said on his way, to the two medical receptionists “Don’t forget to vote today, if you haven’t!” They both early voted, and I heard them talking about the lines – one voted two days ago and was surprised by how many others were in line.
Then in my exam room, that nurse and I briefly talked about it. She early voted as well. “I’m not political, but I’m looking forward to just knowing the answer!”
Driving home in the cold rain, I was glad that Minnesotans seem practical and have banked their vote. I’m not worried about how we’ll go in E.C. terms, but I want us to run up the score. I want as big a popular vote margin nationally as possible.
(1/3 of the way thru my 4h drive-ppl-to-the-polls shift, I haven’t been tapped yet. But we had a huge signup, so I think there’s just good coverage.)

BTW, Dr Phil is rescinding his Trump endorsement. He told Piers Morgan the endorsement was an “act of rebellion” because Harris wouldn’t give him the time of day. He’d wanted to endorse HER. Watching John Wayne play opposite Jimmy Stewart in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is a treasure for exactly that reason; they’re playing their usual archetypes as the badass gunslinger versus the weedy little nerd, and they do it so well, you could be forgiven for thinking that only one of these people served in the war, and it wasn’t John fucking Wayne.

I voted this morning in my blood red county in blood red Missouri. No lines (there never are in tiny Macks Creek!) and, as usual, the election workers were cheerful and friendly.
Ballot was easy for me; if the candidate had a D behind their name, they got my vote! County candidates, nope, didn’t fill in the circle. See, in Camden County, only Republicans run for county offices, so if you want to choose which flavor of Republican you want, you have to vote in the primary. Nope, not voting for a Republican in a primary or general – I ain’t voting for members of a party who are good with state sanctioned murder of women.
However, there were 2 guys running for Sheriff, one R and the other was C something. No D, no vote. I had to look at the top of the ballot to see what party he was in – it was Constitutional something Party. Oh hell no, I say.
The scanner spit back my ballot. Everyone said it didn’t like the ballot right side up, just turn it over. It worked, then! Cranky scanner.

@Sherparick: This is like Terry McAuliffe Day at Balloon Juice. We beat on him in the morning thread, and now we’re at it again.
But having gotten my licks in this morning, I will say this in Terry’s defense: he lost to a strong candidate who ran a very efficient capaign.
A lot of people think of Youngkin now as some charlatan who pulled the wool over the electorate’s eyes. There is some relative truth to that takeaway, but I watched Youngkin throughout the wacky nomination process and the campaign that followed, and I could tell Youngkin was a strong candidate who would not be easy to beat. He was a very slick communicator who managed to appear all things to all people.
We’ll all get to see Youngkin in action during the 2028 Presidential primaries. He’s been preparing that campaign ever since the night he beat McAuliffe. My joke is that Youngkin has developed a special high-tech vest for that race, that will change colors depending which side of his mouth he’s talking out of.

Speaking of the olds, I was at Quest Lab with Mr. Scout (who is older than my old) and I noticed a man older than Mr. Scout’s old who wandered in and was just standing there. I realize that he had no clue what to do next. He did have an appointment so someone helped him with that at home because he had a printout with the QR code. I asked him if he needed help. He said, “I don’t know a dang thing about computers!” It was definitely a cry for help. So I helped him log in at the iPad kiosk and got him set up for his appointment. He was so grateful.
Then I got home and an email from the DMV told me I needed to apply for my license and REAL ID renewal. I’ve been dreading this because of the written test required for the olds. But much to my surprise, the olds do not have to take a written test anymore in California! I felt like I won the lottery.
