This sucks.
I think we’re going to be looking at North Carolina in a few weeks once both data becomes available and our heads become clearer as we try to figure out what next. Right now, it just looks like a near uniform 5 point shift right with a few exceptions that are concentrated in the swing states.
North Carolina Democrats had a pretty good night at the state level.
-
- Governor
- Lt. Governor
- Attorney General
- Secretary of State
-
- Superintendent of Public Education
Most importantly, it looks like the Democrats broke the Republican super-majority in the State legislature. The governor’s veto actually means something now.
They also held onto the single competitive seat in Congress after the state got aggressively gerrymandered.
I’m not sure where I’m going with this beyond looking for shimmers of good news somewhere, but I think North Carolina will be a center of figuring out what is next.
But that is not a today problem. I’m gonna just get through the day while checking in on my friends and having them check in on me.

That’s some good news. Looks like enough of our voters wanted to punish Biden and Harris by staying home.
Barbara
Abortion rights passed multiple states where they were on the ballot, including Arizona, Missouri, Montana, and Nevada.
Quinerly
I am amazed at all the ticket splitting. Clearly in WI a lot of folks voted for Baldwin and either voted for Trump or left pres blank on their ballot.
Tim C.
I would call Florida an example of it passing, just the 60% threshold as an anti-democracy measure blocking it.

“Well, Woodrow we ain’t dead yet, we still got time to learn.”

“I’m gonna just get through the day while checking in on my friends and having them check in on me.”
Same. I know one process I’ll need to start this week is finally becoming legally British. But today is for enduring.

Someone here said there was an Australian government a while back that enacted a wealth of reforms that Australians today love, and they were immediately voted out in favor of a right wing government. I guess that’s just how voters are.
Quinerly
@Barbara: those voters believe Trump when he says leave it to the states. They are going to get a rude awakening.
Am in NC
Yep, looking close to home for any good news today.
Men, please try to be especially nice to the women you know today.

Trying to focus on my almost-8-year-old daughter. She’s my reason for persisting. As for the rest of the fuckers who voted for the chaos, I DGAF about what happens to them. Considering cutting ties with my R-voting conservative Xtian parents, I am feeling that angry about things.

@Baud: I have not looked at the numbers but my guess is that normies broke for Trump because of
Shitty MSM disinfo about the economy
Ds not having Biden’s back.
Voters don’t trust parties that don’t defend their own successful president. Running away from Biden cost Ds this election
There is no fucking inflation. US has the best fucking economy in the fucking world after COVID.
Bupalos
@Quinerly: We don’t really know. Trump himself has no ideology, only that powerful vacuum where his soul should be. That leaves him a lot of flexibility in what he does and doesn’t attack. And that crew he’s bringing along with him is going to be more chaotic than expected I think.
satby
I also think something is hinky when down ballot races are sweeps for Democrats but the presidential choice is the convict. Hope they sort that out in the states where it happened.

Just sitting here doing my next UK visa application while my marriage is still valid.
I mean, congrats to North Carolina and all that, but you’re going to be super punished by the coming Trump administration.
Biden is going to chicken and pretend like the institutions and norms are still a thing. As Barack did.

er.ncsbe.gov is showing that Riggs lost. I prefer your version!

@Am in NC: i have decided 100% of my volunteer time money and energy is going to causes supporting young women
The did their part but will bear the brunt now. More than they already do.

Silver lining indeed for NC. But still. My neighbors voted for competent state governance at the executive level and a lunatic as the national executive. Its going to be bad no matter where you live on the planet. Any chance to slow climate change is gone and humanity will suffer indeed. RFK in charge of federal health agencies? Detention camps, etc. it’s just unthinkable how bad things might be, but they might be slightly less so in North Carolina.
Trivia Man
@mali muso: i am disgusted with my 2 sons in their 20’s. Both didn’t vote.

I expect to see a lot of thinkpieces on what may become known as the North Carolina paradox. There just seems a lot of juicy data there for many social scientists.
AM in NC
@Trivia Man: Well, they’d better not let women their age know that.
Chris Johnson
@satby: Hope to hear more about that: it’s in line with what I think is going on, but I hadn’t even heard of that one. I was just going by the relative buzz off both campaigns, and knowing that the fix is in. I absolutely don’t know HOW that fix was worked.
I do know it’s important to not wash our hands of it before lunchtime the morning after Election Night, which is why I expect to see all the usual suspects demanding we do exactly that: and they’re myriad, professing all points of view, except when they’re messaging.
I’d bet a small sum of money the Trump people try to do a coup before January, but it’s hard to tell how hard they’ll go. It’s their turn to go all gas no brakes like we’ve been doing for months. May they be pointing at a brick wall.

@TKinNC:
Wikipedia says Riggs 69.10%, her (R) opponent 30.90%.

I really do not understand 66M for Kamala and 80M for Biden in 2020. wtf, terrible turnout of Dem voters.
Butch
Well, Republicans did what Putin wanted. The only silver lining is that all the folks who thought “It’s OK. It won’t affect me” are in for a surprise.
Geminid
Washington and Oregon may also have bucked the Republican trend. At least that’s what David Villaneuve of the Northwest Progressive Policy Institute wrote this morning. Among other good OR and WA election news, Villaneuve said Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA03) and Janelle Bynum (OR5) are on a path to winning. If this proves out that would by a hold and a flip in two Tossup races.
Villaneuve gave a brief history of Washington’s transition from swing state to “blue bastion” that reminded me some of Virginia. Of course, it’s not clear tbat Virginia is a blue bastion yet; Abigail Spanberger’s run for Governor next year will provide more data on that score.

@catclub: You DON’T understand racism and misogyny?
And voter suppression and election interference played a part too.

Every state judicial candidate lost in NC. The state supreme court and the state appeals courts are now worse than they were before. There’s a little silver lining in NC, but stress on the little.

@Butch: unfortunately no surprise for Ukraine. dread.

And our side worked really hard to GOTV, I mean really hard. Yet here we are. In Germany in the 1930s or in the post Reconstruction USA.
I was so hoping that both Mexico and the USA would have a woman president, a lefty for Mexico and a center left for us. But it’s not to be.

@SiubhanDuinne: Interesting. Ncsbe.gov is the state board of elections site. Our sec of state doesn’t do elections in NC. I think wikipedia may be incorrect though I wish they weren’t.
See https://er.ncsbe.gov/?election_dt=11/05/2024&county_id=0&office=JUD&contest=0.

@schrodingers_cat: This. All of this. Forcing Biden out was a big error, but an even bigger error was not running on Biden’s record, particularly on the economy. Why wasn’t it being trumpeted at every opportunity that we have the best economy in the world right now, thanks to Biden and the Democrats?
To add insult to injury, Trump is going to get into office and claim – and be supported by the media – that the amazing economy is all because of him, just like he did in 2016.
Carol
The NC paradox …A bunch of people did not vote for president, or voted for a 3rd party/write-in candidate. Nothing else makes sense. Was probably a gaza protest. I can’t think of any other rational reason for it. They should be able to confirm or disprove the thought easily.
dc
@Carol: The same thing happened in 2016 (Roy Cooper won governor and the Dems got other Council of State wins) and in 2020 when Cooper won again and Trump won the presidential in the state both years. This year is the 3rd time he wins this state at the same time that the Dem candidate for Governor wins and other Dem Council of State candidates also win.

@PJ:
media slant by how they reported, and how much they reported, rep vs dem, very skewed.
the crazy but very real levels of misreporting, false information, and bias, and media outlets owned, controlled by conservative interests, which was a long term plan..

I don’t have the self expression writing abilities that my son has..
I am feeling so low…I will never understand how this country voted in 2024…my faith in the American voting public has been shaken to its core….Trump and Vance running amuck with a gop senate for 2 years… and possible control of the House..the Constitution as we know it will be severely tested in the Supreme Court…this is what America voted for…granted it has…hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised…but based on his other term…I can’t see how right now..
