Today is the 2nd Anniversary of Freddie coming home from the Rescue. He was so thin and his fur so matted and he was sick, and we got him for a $100 donation instead of the usual fee of $400 they charge people in our income bracket because they said the vet bills would be horrible, and we honestly didn’t think he’d make it but we thought we’d give him a home for as long as we could, and it turned out wonderfully (moreso for us than him, I suspect).
He still gets coughing fits (he had kennel cough when we got him) occasionally, and he still hides food sometimes, but my wife can’t sit for more than two minutes without him snuggling up to her.
Owning a pet is not for everyone, but it’s the right thing for us.
If you are thinking about getting a pet, please get a Rescue.

I didn’t mean to bigfoot John. I just can’t figure out some of the posting mechanics, like scheduling and formatting pictures (OBVIOUSLY).
Also, I’m up on Blue Sky, at https://bsky.app/profile/soonergrunt.bsky.social

That’s a good dog!
And you’re a good human for taking him in and taking care of him.
VFX Lurker
What a fine, floofy beast.
He’s so lucky to have you. Thank you for posting these lovely pix.

@Soonergrunt: I had a dog very like him, Mop-dog. Changed several lives for the better. May you be similarly blessed.

Three rescues in our house- two retired racing greyhounds and a very large cat who 11 years turned up in our yard as a stray and wangled his way into the house. They keep us as sane as it’s possible to be in these parlous times.

Oh my gosh, floof! So adorable! I love rescues and rescuers. ❤️
Kristine
Freddie is adorable.
Sister Golden Bear
So. Much. Floof. Adorable!

Rescues always are grateful. Sometimes it just takes them a while to feel safe enough to trust and show it. Shelters all over the country are full, so if you’ve been debating getting a new companion, now is the time.

@VFX Lurker:
Seconded!

My latest is quite a rescue; was looking on craigslist for local rehoming dogs, for a time there were more pitties than anything. Kept missing out, on wild hair I answered about a shepherd mix; some how I went from wondering about the big guy to having person passing along a passed on walk him down with all his supplies and while I was still wondering if it was the right thing to do and coping with food, bowls, brushes she walked off. So either I am the “owner” of white shepherd or he is owner of older woman; it depends on the day and the time of day. (Good thing I already had bagless pet vac, since am vacuuming at least once a day.)

Thirded!

@satby: Not only are shelters full but craigs list and local papers often have dogs and cats to be rehomed. Depending on desperate you may end up with little or no fee; I was surprised how many got their children pets and now find children and families are too busy to deal with dog who was once small fluffy puppy.

Freddie has enriched your lives, but not as much as you and your family have enriched his life.
Freddie is adorable! I love small mop doggos ♥️
BeautifulPlumage
Freddy is so cute, but especially in that 3rd pic with the smile. 😸😸
ETA Freddie! I meant Freddie!

Freddie will definitely steal your heart. (Soonergrunt, I swear I used to read your blog posts years ago. Glad to see you here!)
Scamp Dog
Adorbs! Thanks for the pics, they put a smile on my face.
Yutsano
So. Much. Floof.

Freddie is indeed a very good doggo!
That having been established… Official word from the Blogmaster, lo many year ago, is that “After forty minutes, it’s not bigfooting.” So you’re doing just fine with a two-hour gap, Soonergrunt!

is that a dog? or just a Persian Capybara? Either way, I want one

Soonergrunt – OMG he’s puppy sitting! I’m melting from loving memories and his adorableness.

You and Freddie are both lucky! May you have more years of love!
I got my Sassy (kitty) from a shelter two years ago in October. She had been a shelter cat from birth, and it took her a bit to acclimate to a home setting. And she is the Supervisor Of Everything.
She has trained me well. When I go to my sewing room, she expects to be “mitted”; I have a grooming mitten and she adores the grooming. Funny thing, when I first used it, she hated it, but one day she decided it was the best thing ever!
She also drags her wand toy or stuffed fish from the living room to the bedroom when left alone. Not sure why!

@like a metaphor: LOL! Nice!

Cole’s post timestamped 8:39.
Yours timestamped 10:49.
More than two hours apart? That’s not bigfooting, does not even qualify as tinyfooting.
;)

Who saved who?
Good human. Nothing but rescues on my dance card, myself.
If you’re not going to hunt it, breed it, or show it — save two lives and get a rescue.
You’ll thank yourself later.

Bigfoot? He’s Bigfoot!

@NotMax: What about slapped with an octopusfooting?

There’s my floofy boy! I’ve missed seeing him on social media because I swore off all of them earlier this year. He was the cutest doggo then, and he’s the cutest doggo now. So happy he’s thrived in your family’s care.
VeniceRiley
Oh my gosh, what an adorable, huggable plush toy come alive!
Soonergrunt
@Anne Laurie: I think the timezones threw me off because it looked like I was right behind him.

All of our cats have been rescues, and we’ve had a couple of delightful rescue rabbits.
And our power is out now. We’ve joined the half million others without electricity. That terrible windstorm predicted for the PNW has arrived, the power company has stopped restoring power for now because it’s too dangerous for the linemen, and downed trees have killed at least one person. I don’t expect to have power again until sometime tomorrow, and only if we’re very lucky. We have a generator which we’ll hook up early tomorrow morning, just to keep the refrigerator going.
I’m using my phone hotspot to link my computer to the internet right now, but tomorrow we may be watching tv by candlelight.

Freddie!
Yes, rescues are the best! We currently have our rescue bunny Peppercorn, along with the fostering the rest of her family who I hope are going to get adopted one of these months…

Freddie is too cute for words! I’m so happy for you both.

Freddie! And I love his little plaid coat. He is rocking it.

@karen gail: That’s what happens to a great many pet shop “designer breed” (aka: muts) when they’re not tiny puppies anymore. The poor things are just on the verge of old enough to reliably respond to training, and they’re dumped.

@opiejeanne: How’s your eye surgery healing?
That was you that had the eyelid lift, right?

Our son and DIL have had a string of great rescue dogs. They usually get an older dog who’s already housebroken. Those dogs are so grateful for a home.
Quantum man
He is cute. Almost as cute as our dog Riley.
Liminal Owl
Aww, Freddie!
All of my (and our) cats have been rescues.

@Soonergrunt: yes I saw you at Bluesky, welcome aboard. That is one cute pup! So glad he made it, you did a really good thing there. And my rescue cats approve your message.
J.
Freddie is adorable and you guys are the best for rescuing him.
Sis
Freddie’s little sploot!! He’s so adorable! And you’re so right about rescues; they’re the only way to go. My girl is originally from a hoarding case and had to be rehomed by her first adopter after that adopter became very ill. She hid in the dining room for the first week I had her, but you’d never know that now from watching her play and seeing the thrill she gets when people she knows come to visit. Knowing that you’ve made these little souls happy is such a wonderful feeling.
Sis
Forgot to add that Freddie looks very dapper in his checked fleece!

3 of the 4 cats I’ve had were rescues, the 4th was a kitten from my sister’s cat’s litter. I like getting 2 at a time. This time, I found what I wanted – a bonded pair of adults. Everyone else wanted kittens, so mine had been in the shelter together 16 months. That was 10 years ago, and they are family. Good to see you back around here, Sooner. Freddie is a very dapper gentleman.
Mel
Freddie is beautiful, and he looks so happy!
The 4th photo, where he’s bouncing with joy because he’s with his people, is pulling hard at my heartstrings.
Mel
@BethanyAnne: I love adopting grownup cats. My much-missed late PixieB was, as was her bestie Lady Jayne. They were the sweetest, most bondable girls, and so happy to be loved and love us back.
brooklyndodger
Lovely post! We’ve had our x-year-old frosty face for 6 years. When we picked him up at the rescue he led us to our car, jumped in and looked back at us like You are MINE now.

We had to let our previous rescue dog, Juno, go a few months ago and she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. She was 16 and had a wonderful 9 years with us. Her passing left a massive hole in our hearts.
We held out three weeks before looking for another rescue. We ended up at Ballarat Animal Shelter, 2 hours away, at 9am one Saturday morning to meet a one year old kelpie/coolie cross that that been rescued along with 18 other dogs from a property in country Victoria. She had had no human contact in her life up until that point.
She was an angel in the car on the way home and within a week had toilet trained herself. She’s still very timid around other people but is getting better every day. We’ve called her Freya, Norse goddess of love and battle.
