I keep forgetting I am on Arizona time. I don’t have much to say, although I am enjoying the Gaetz fallout.
Are we interested in some zooms on Thanksgiving? I think it would be nice to get together those of us who want to.

Love the idea of a Thanksgiving Zoom. I’m in.
ETA: Anyone besides me watching the new Ted Danson vehicle Man on the Inside on Netflix? It just dropped today. I’ve watched the first three episodes. So far it’s absolutely delightful — not substantive at all, at least not so far, but a charming concept and nice, agreeable characters and acting.
Citizen Alan
I finally have Thanksgiving plans! Turns out everyone in my D&D group hates their family as much as I hate mine. So we’re going to have a traditional pot luck Friendsgiving on Thursday and then play D&D for six hours straight.
Suzanne
@SiubhanDuinne: So your mention of Ted Danson made me think of a meme that has been going around, in which Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell’s character from “The Good Place”) is the perfect example of the swing voter.
It’s terrifying that that’s probably right on the money.
trollhattan
@SiubhanDuinne:
Danson was so great in The Good Place. His effortless performance had me remembering why I always enjoyed him. Will check this new one out.
And speaking of recs, I’m all caught up on Shrinking. Amazingly good and holy hell, are there some funny characters.
Nukular Biskits
I’m game … depending on what I”m doing and what time.

Re: the Gaetz fallout, I’m hoping Betty Cracker will weigh in on the Bondi pick. Back when Pam B. basically accepted a bribe from Trump to make one of his Florida scams go away (I’m foggy on the details now) I’m pretty sure our BC had some incisive observations. So I’d love her unique on-the-ground take about the nomination itself, not to mention its incredible speed.
zhena gogolia
@SiubhanDuinne: Wow, Susan Ruttan and Sally Struthers are still alive.
zhena gogolia
@SiubhanDuinne: Look up her performance defending him in the first impeachment.
trollhattan
@SiubhanDuinne:
Have Pam Bondi and Tiffany Trump ever been seen together?
Asking for a friend.
SiubhanDuinne
@Suzanne:
@trollhattan:
I’m ashamed to admit it, but I have never seen The Good Place. I hope I can before long — I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. And I’ve always liked Ted Danson. He’s really fun in this new series.
trollhattan
@zhena gogolia: Wowzers, proof that the children are still being thought of!
Kelly
@SiubhanDuinne: Thanks! We’re looking for our next show. The new Ted Danson show caught my eye. We’ve been watching “Supracell” on Netflix which is an OK but not outstanding superhero story.
Sister Golden Bear
Thanksgiving Zoom, I’m in.
SiubhanDuinne
@zhena gogolia:
Veronica Cartwright, also too.
Jackie
@SiubhanDuinne: I’m hazy on the details, but, IICR, Bondi was running for AG – re-election? And was going after TCFG’s fake college (based in FL?) and he donated thru his charity (illegal) $25,000 to her campaign. She dismissed the suit. And the rest is history.
trollhattan
@SiubhanDuinne:
The Good Place is a philosophy course masquerading as a comedy, and do they ever stick the landing. I encountered it mid-run, was engaged and very puzzled in equal measure. Beginning at the beginning pretty much a requirement. Worth the journey? I thought so, and the inevitable final episode was {chef’s kiss}.
SiubhanDuinne
@zhena gogolia:
I had genuinely forgotten that. My god, it seems so quaint now, and so very long ago.
SiubhanDuinne
@trollhattan:
You are saying all the things that make me want to see it.
Dr Daniel Price
Thanksgiving here has passed, but that makes an online meetup easier to manage. Staying tuned.
LAO
@SiubhanDuinne: The Good Place is so excellent, that I’m almost jealous you haven’t seen it yet. It’s well worth your time, especially in this very dark time.
Ohio Mom
@Citizen Alan: You were so smart to move wherever it is you moved to (someplace in California?).
I was supposed to start cleaning and shopping today for the onslaught of Ohio Dad’s extended family next Wednesday but instead I mostly moped because I am tired of every last one of them. Never had much use for in-law jokes until I acquired in-laws.
SiubhanDuinne
@Jackie:
That sounds about right. Maybe I’ll look it up tomorrow. Or not. I’m far too sleepy to be arsed to do it now.
Gin & Tonic
@Citizen Alan:
I’m truly sorry to hear that. I am looking forward to a Thanksgiving with my delightful children and their wonderful spouses, and regularly count my blessings that life has largely worked out for us.
SiubhanDuinne
@LAO:
I just checked, and it’s on Netflix! Which is the streaming service I have. So guess what I’ll be bingeing starting this weekend!!
eclare
@SiubhanDuinne:
I wondered how that show was, thank you. I like Ted Danson, and the clips I’ve seen look funny.
Sister Machine Gun of Quiet Harmony
@Citizen Alan: That sounds amazing! Jealous! I’m spending it with a mix of Trumpy and non-Trumpy family.
mrmoshpotato
Well put, and yes! It was a great show.
Theron Ware
@Citizen Alan: There’s an excellent documentary about D&D art and the stories behind it on Prime Video called “Eye of the Beholder” The Art of Dungeons and Dragons. Truly fascinating content.
rikyrah
@SiubhanDuinne:
Biondi is crooked, but hasn’t been accused of being a sex trafficker.
Just a bought sleaze
Routine GOPer
rikyrah
@Citizen Alan:
That sounds fantastic🤗
eclare
@trollhattan:
The final episode was absolutely perfect. It was a very well done and thoughtful show, especially for basic network tv.
LAO
@SiubhanDuinne: excellent!
If anyone is obsessed with British police shows (I’m a total addict) and you subscribe to Acorn (I clearly have a problem) Inspector Ellis is really really good new show.
p.a.
Just finished watching TGP tonight! Really enjoyable.
Omnes Omnibus
@LAO: If it sucks, I will come looking for you. Just saying.
Gin & Tonic
@Omnes Omnibus:
NYC is a big place.
Omnes Omnibus
@Gin & Tonic: I need a hobby.
BlueGuitarist
@zhena gogolia:
@SiubhanDuinne:
Also, hurricane Katrina victims had to take Pam Bondi to court in a long battle to get back their dog.

Jackie:
@rikyrah:
LAO
@Omnes Omnibus: lol. Bring it!
ETA; DCI Ellis is the best character I’ve seen in ages. Sharon Clarke killed this role.
mrmoshpotato
@Omnes Omnibus:
You totally suck. Just saying.
Omnes Omnibus
@mrmoshpotato: How about those Bears?
mrmoshpotato
@BlueGuitarist: What the fuck?
Also,
The dog’s name is Master Tank, you dognapping pile of shit! Run her over, Master Tank!
mrmoshpotato
@Omnes Omnibus: It’s “How ’bout them Bears?”, you cheesehead! (They suck.)
Go Bears, Lions, Dolphins, Chiefs, and 49ers!
Melancholy Jaques
@Suzanne:
Parodies of swing voters & undecideds have a Poe’s Law like quality that no matter how stupid the parody voters are, the real ones are much worse.
BeautifulPlumage
Yay, I have cell/ Internet back at home.
Power is still out and will be for a while. I’m about in the middle of the red mess on the PSE outage map.
Curled up near the wood stove with a sleeping Cleo Marie keeping my lap warm and a local stout to keep my insides warm.
narya
I actually bought The Good Place DVDs (I was a philosophy major, so…) Best show ever (even better than Hill Street Blues).
I strongly recommend the podcast too; absolutely fascinating and FUN (hosted by Mark Evan Jackson).
ETA Eleanor learns to Do Better, unlike swing voters.
Jackie
@mrmoshpotato:
Fixed.
From a diehard suffering Seahawks fan.
Melancholy Jaques
I am only four episodes in, but Hulu’s Say Nothing is a riveting story of two sisters Dolours and Marian who joined the IRA at the height of The Troubles. The actors are outstanding.
mrmoshpotato
Sounds good to me.
mrmoshpotato
@Jackie: 49ers are playing the Packers.
Go Niners!
Soonergrunt
I would love to do a zoom if I can remember it.
Also, I’ve found a new hobby.
When scammers text me trying to catfish a relationship or whatever, like yesterday one texted me “do you have time to play golf tomorrow?” I replied “No. I have to hide the bodies.”
And then we see how it plays out.
Omnes Omnibus
@Soonergrunt: That thread was excellent.
Suzanne
@Melancholy Jaques: I read Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keeffe, and it was fantastic. Like, I took it to work to read in the bathroom. Could not put it down.
Didn’t know they made a show of it. Will have to check it out.

@SiubhanDuinne: As it turns out, Terry Gross had an interview with Michael Schur on “Fresh Air” today:

CaseyL
My Thanksgiving plans fell through when the people I was planning to visit and stay with came down with Covid, so I would definitely be up for a BJ Thanksgiving Zoom.
@Soonergrunt: Nice! I love stories about people who torment scammers, and wish I could think on my feet fast enough to mess with them like that.
Soonergrunt
@Omnes Omnibus: It’s almost as much fun as when the call me at work and I’m on my gov’t computer and they tell me about how they’re the Microsoft FBI task force or whatever and I’ve got pornography on my computer and I need to pay the fine with Home Depot gift cards.
Jackie
Anyone watching the Snow Bowl in Cleveland? It’s a frikkin’ blizzard!
Jackie
@mrmoshpotato: BOOOO!!!
mrmoshpotato
@Jackie:
It’s quite the sight! Also, brrrrr🌨🌨
ETA – put on a shirt, dude! 🥶
CaseyL
@Soonergrunt:
With all the grifters lined up to run the government under Trump, I wonder if “pay us in Gift Cards or you’re under arrest” will become a real thing.
mrmoshpotato
@Jackie: I didn’t make the schedule.
Also, hey Hutch! Less talky, more dancey! Bundlé! Savé!
SWMBO
@Gin & Tonic:
There is a line in The Man Who Came to Dinner, “if you’re ever in New York, just try and find me.”
NutmegAgain
I’m really liking the new series Before. Billy Crystal in a straight role as a child psychiatrist, and a stray kid with a past that may or may not be what it seems. Psychological thriller. It’s on AppleTV, alas, but Rosie Perez plays the foster mom.
narya
I would possibly Zoom, depending on timing (Friendsgiving with Downstairs Neighbor).
Raven
@trollhattan: Ever see”The Onion Field “? He was excellent in that.
mrmoshpotato
@Jackie: Some great blizzard shots in this game!
BeautifulPlumage
I would zoom if it was early; I’ll be leaving home around 1:30 PDT, which is early for east coasters!
Martin
@Soonergrunt: My wife now regularly gets a call saying that they have video of her jerking off. “Wow, that’s impressive” she replies.
I’m telling you, this economy is becoming almost pure grift.
Jackie
@mrmoshpotato: Yes! THIS is football as it should be!
mrmoshpotato
Leaf blow the snow in Cleveland!
mrmoshpotato
@Martin:
BWHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
mrmoshpotato
@Jackie: You obviously dress for all weather.
A Bears-Packers game back in December 2000 was miserable! Cold as shit!
Melancholy Jaques
I have many fond & not so fond memories of being at the old Browns stadium in weather just like this. Glad to be watching it from a couch in California.
Chacal Charles Calthrop
@narya: bring one of your baking projects & I predict half the neighborhood will show up -or at least would want to, if they knew about it.
I might be up for a zoom call. Let’s see what time works for everyone.
@narya:
Jackie
@mrmoshpotato: You mean like bearing your chest in a blizzard? 😁
Citizen Alan
@Gin & Tonic: i kid .. a little. I have cousins, an aunt, and a niece and younger nephew I’m rather fond of. I look forward to never speaking to my sister again

@SiubhanDuinne: Drum has you covered: https://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2016/09/did-donald-trump-try-bribe-attorney-general-florida/

No matter how I feel about the Browns, their personnel, or their owners, a win over the Steelers is always a cause for joy.
Jackie
@Melancholy Jaques: Absolutely! The Seahawks detest the Steelers for so many reasons.
mrmoshpotato
@Melancholy Jaques: And the blizzard was excellent! Awesome drone footage!
Hidalgo de Arizona
Less concerned with a Thanksgiving Zoom than I am with an actual Arizona Meetup with all the local jackals now that John’s here.
Madeleine
@LAO: yes! Inspector Ellis is fantastic! Says another British mystery—including police shows—addict.

@Melancholy Jaques: I read the book. I can’t bring myself to watch. I won’t spoil by sharing book’s conclusions but let’s just say there are very few angels.

Speaking of streaming, working my way through Reindeer Mafia on MHz Choice (available there both subtitled and dubbed). Chock full of taciturn Finns.
;)
NotMax
@Melancholy Jaques
Title comes from Seamus Heaney’s poem, I betcha.
Gloria DryGarden
@trollhattan: a philosophy course disguised as comedy, it sounds amazing. Is the good place on YouTube at all? I don’t have tv, nor streaming services.
I need some genius screenwriters to write a comedy that disguises cult deprogramming and fact-checking.
id like to attend the zoom on Thursday, barring any unexpected plans.
It’ll be cold here; the friend I used to take a walk with in thanksgiving morning has been dead for many years, and my closest friends moved out of state. It’s often a day for gardening, or reading, or cleaning out some drawers.
Gloria DryGarden
@narya: I’ll have to suggest this show to the Pollyanna from hell, he’s a philosophy major, too. He’s currently getting all fired up about some philosophy he’s writing up.
NotMax
@Gloria DryGarden
It’s primarily silliness, but in a palatable way. Wandered off into the weeds in the last season, IMHO.
You obviously have a computer, a smarty pants phone, or both. Can stream on those if so inclined.
Gloria DryGarden
@NotMax: my budget is very careful. Not been working enough, not enough saved to retire, thus, my extended dip into savings is for exotic foods like gluten free stuff, 3 times as expensive as the wheat stuff. Very careful.
I could look into the costs of streaming. I may still have to continue to be culturally illiterate as I weigh the priorities.
NotMax
@Gloria DryGarden
There’s often some bargain basement rates for several months on various streamers for Black Friday. Plan to post about those once the roster of offers this year are confirmed. Keep an eye out.
Sometimes as low as 99 cents or $1.99 per month for a few months’ trial. Just remember to cancel once the trial period comes to an end.
Gloria DryGarden
@NotMax: ooh, aah. That might be cool. I’ll keep an eye out for your notes on that next week.
meanwhile, attending to the next urgent difficulty, always hoping to quit having so many challenges, free up a little time for the regular stuff.
Ramalama
@Gloria DryGarden: don’t libraries in America have shows you can check out via one of their electronic services (is it Libby?)…I have a library card still where I can check out books via kindle, but don’t have devices new enough to run their software to listen to audiobooks or play video. I need to be able to use a Vpn to disguise the fact that I’m in Canada, and my iPads are too old.
NotMax
@Ramalama
Kanopy and Hoopla are streaming services one can gain access to for free with a library card, provided your particular library subscribes to either or both of them.
Gloria DryGarden
@Ramalama: I’ve gotten really hooked on Libby, reading and listening to books. I didn’t think I’d like listening, but I do.
I use Kanopy, too. Not everything recent is on there. But many wonderful things. Not much time for movies, but for a few months I could have gone way past their limit, it used to be 8 movies a month, free great courses. It’s counted differently now.
beckya57
I’d be up for a zoom. Will be out hiking from 0800-1300 PST, but available after that, ie after 1600 (4 pm) Eastern time.
Emily B.
@SiubhanDuinne: Delayed cancelling my Netflix subscription for a couple of months just so that I could finish watching The Good Place.
