Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Come on, man.

White supremacy is terrorism.

This fight is for everything.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Consistently wrong since 2002

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

The push to fire Government workers is actually a scam designed to funnel even more money to government contractors and management consulting. The dirty secret of "smaller government" is that it benefits management consulting firms. The works still has to get done, but with 40% overhead.

I’ve said this repeatedly based on decades of experience: “reducing” the federal workforce means a greater increase in contracting…with much higher costs.

Per the link above, it’s a scam.

Boris Epshteyn is under investigation for running a pay-for-play scheme for Trump appointments.

    CNN web archive version.

Attorneys for Donald Trump conducted an internal investigation into allegations that one of his top aides, Boris Epshteyn, has sought to gain financially from his influence with Trump and others in the president-elect’s orbit, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The internal investigation, which was confirmed by half a dozen sources and is not criminal in nature, has probed multiple instances of Epshteyn allegedly requesting payment in exchange for promoting candidates for administration positions or offering to connect individuals with people in the upcoming administration relevant to their industries, sources said.

In one instance he requested as much as $100,000 per month in exchange for his services, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Epshteyn’s alleged activities prompted those looking into the matter to make an initial recommendation that Epshteyn should be removed from Trump’s proximity and that he should not be employed or paid by Trump entities, according to two sources.

As of Monday afternoon, it does not appear the transition team will heed that recommendation.

    . . .

Part of that investigation focused on claims that Epshteyn proposed that Scott Bessent, Trump’s pick for Treasury secretary, pay him to promote his name with Trump and others at Mar-a-Lago. Bessent did not make payments to Epshteyn.

CNN has reached out to representatives of Bessent for comment.

The back-and-forth between Epshteyn and Bessent resulted in a heated confrontation last week in the lobby of Mar-a-Lago, where Epshteyn raised his voice at Bessent, according to two sources briefed on the matter.

In at least one other instance, Epshteyn asked for payment in exchange for introductions and influence with the incoming Trump administration, according to two sources. Trump’s legal team was investigating several other similar alleged incidents, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Grifters gonna grift.  Ephsteyn’s not going anywhere, but at least he got caught.

I blocked “God” on bluesky today. He was pushing Nina Turner as a good source of information about why the election was lost, and announced that he was a Bernie Bro. This is godpod, so not The Tweet of God. That account never smirked about being truly progressive, as opposed to a liberal.

OT, but we finally got heat in our house today, after a week without it. The power went out during the “bomb cyclone” on Tuesday night, came back on Friday but we couldn’t get the heater to run. I kept hearing that no repairman could even look at it before Wednesday. Today I found someone who came a couple of hours after I called, installed a new capacitor, and we have heat. I swear, I am too darned old to enjoy the camping in the snow lifestyle. The temp at 9am was 59F indoors.

@opiejeanne: so I’m doing my traditional liquid brine, but this year two changes: 1) adding herbs to the brine and 2) injecting the breast meat (I bought a bird with just breast meat) with that flavored brine. This will be a combination of Alton Brown’s long established turkey recipe that I’ve used for the past, damn near, 30 years but combined with Brian Langerstrom’s variation to it (brine injection). I tried a few different styles the past few years, and was told: we miss that really good turkey. Got it.

I can only take so much despair right now, and being without heat for a week made me focus on things other than the pending horror, but I am aware of what’s going on.That’s why I started going to the very liberal Bear Creek UMC two weeks ago, and it’s providing me with community that I needed. The pastor is kind of hilarious, and everyone seems glad to know me. (They don’t know me yet, that may change)

The musicians are a delight and the pianist wants to find a piece for 4 hands for the two of us, but I’m not sure I can still play. My hands are very stiff, partly from arthritis and lack of practice. Someone asked if they had heard me singing harmony during a hymn, and I should have told her that I wasn’t doing it on purpose (I don’t know the hymns they’re using and I don’t have access to the scores yet). I may have to join the choir in self defense.

It’s a long news story and there was some of that in the reporting that wasn’t in my excerpt.  Granted, it was a side note but it was covered.

Despite a seemingly more orderly and quick process than in 2016, Trump’s transition this time around is still rife with the infighting that is typically on display in Trump’s orbit, multiple sources familiar with the matter tell CNN. Sources on the transition team have expressed frustration at how many people have Trump’s ear and how quickly a day’s progress can be undone.

Tensions between Epshteyn and some other members of Trump’s inner circle have escalated in recent weeks. Elon Musk, who has been by Trump’s side regularly since the election and has a growing influence on the president-elect, has questioned Epshteyn’s sway over Trump. The two also had a confrontation at Mar-a-Lago, with Musk leveling a number of accusations at Epshteyn, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

@Princess: The story is important for other reasons too. I know people keep saying “Don’t focus on Trump the person but instead on his policies” but I think that once it becomes clearer that 45 is non compos mentis the 64 billion dollar question is going to be “Who is actually minding the store?”

If Epshteyn is cutting deals on his own behalf and not his boss’  my guess is, it’s him.

My (admittedly faint) hope is that the cultists will be upset if they realize their idol is not actually running things. It’s high time to spread some of this political disillusion around.

His transition team has just now noticed that he channels whatever he heard from whomever he spoke with last, whether or not that conflicts with what the previous person he spoke with said? Get with the program, people! Your guy has the attention span of an Irish setter on meth! Deal with it!

there will be a lot of “give trump a chance, the dems have really fucked everything up, he’s trying to fix it” for the first 8 months or so.

I’m wondering if the press will concern troll about inflation like they did with Biden?  I suspect that with bird flu epidemic the price of eggs are going to be soar but they’ll also have a cover for that.

If there is one thing that right winger media outfit has – it’s the ability to make excuses for Trump. It’s why nobody can remember what the fuck he did his first term.

@Soapdish:This reminds me of New Zealand in the winter.  No central heating and single pane windows.  Regularly in the 30’s, sometimes below.  I wore a knit hat to bed and in the daytime, wore fingerless gloves when reading or crocheting and used a portable room heater.  I used to note that, inside, I was warmer in Fairbanks, Alaska (central heating and triple-pane windows) at -30 than in more temperate center of NZ’s North Island.

The people who are really going to rule are the people who put JD Vance and Mike Johnson in place. Full stop. It’s why Vance has not been participating – he (rather, Thiel) doesn’t want to be anywhere near the several train wrecks that are coming down the tracks. Johnson similarly has tried to stay out of it all.

Area man late entry into Trump cabinet sweepstakes.

A man from Granite Bay was arrested by the FBI Friday on suspicion of assaulting law enforcement at the Jan. 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol riot. Dane Thompson, 45, was allegedly at the site of “one of the most violent attacks against law enforcement” during the insurrection, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Thompson was arraigned Monday in Sacramento federal court, charged with felony offenses of assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers and civil disorder, plus five misdemeanor offenses. His case will be tried in the D.C. circuit, prosecutors said. He is scheduled to be released from custody after posting a $25,000 bail. He’s scheduled to appear before D.C. Magistrate Judge Matthew J. Sharbaugh on Thursday, Dec. 5.

Thompson recently ran an unsuccessful campaign for the Eureka Union School District board of trustees in Placer County. According to his campaign statement, Thompson is an electrical engineer with two sons in the school district. A woman associated with a phone number listed for Thompson told the Sacramento Bee that they had no comment.
