The Strange Tale of the IncElCamino

This gave me a chuckle:

(Bloomberg) — Tesla Inc.’s electric vehicles would be excluded from consumer rebates proposed by California’s governor, a decision aimed at spurring greater competition that’s likely to draw the ire of Elon Musk.

Yes, an expensive luxury good shouldn’t get a rebate — even if Elon and Gavin are gonna fight about it.

Anyway, this gives me an excuse to post this piece about the mournful Facebook post of a Cybertruck owner.

A dentist Tesla Cybertruck owner, Steven Shao, first shared this sentiment on Facebook, which several Cybertruck owners later echoed.

Steven, writing about his Cybertruck ownership experience, says…

“You worked hard, but your kids don’t want to hang out with you, and your friends are too busy to visit. You are getting older every day, and your neck and back are complaining.

You need a man cave, a Batmobile, and a powerhouse, and it would be nice to have something that makes people snap their necks and glare. You want an overpowered, overpriced, over-the-top giant fridge on wheels.

They can’t ignore you anymore.”

If this is fake, I don’t want to know what real is.

Anyway, there’s been a big focus on young men (late teens, 20’s, maybe early 30’s) who listen to Joe Rogan, follow red pill subreddits and generally think they’re entitled to sex/relationships/bangmaids.  But this elides the fact that a lot of men who didn’t grow up on Rogan and red pill are still shitty.  There are whole subreddits dedicated to the disappointment of women who are over 40 and trying to date age-appropriate men, and man it’s grim in there.  There are just a lot of undateable, divorced men who can’t (won’t) understand why their ex-wife and kids hate them, and they just repeat the behaviors that left them without anyone to visit on Thanksgiving in their tarnished IncElCamino.

There are also a lot more man babies than I ever realized, by which I mean men looking for a mommy replacement as a wife.  My wife and I just started watching Kevin Can F*** Himself, which is an attempt to subvert the sitcom genre.  The main character, Allison, is married to man baby Kevin, who doesn’t listen to her, infantilizes her, and spends their savings on football memorabilia.  When Kevin and his pals are on screen, there’s a laugh track and a bunch of lame jokes.  When Allison is on her own, it’s bitter, bleak despair and longing.  We haven’t finished it, but it’s definitely a document of a time when society as a whole is figuring out that a lot of men really suck.  And almost all of them voted for Trump.

Been saying this for years. This is why I never remarried.

even if Elon and Gavin are gonna fight about it

Can this be literal? We never got the cage fight between Musk and Zuck. Newsom is only a few years older than Musk and appears to be in much better physical condition.

This made me think of the biggest man baby of them all, Donald Trump and his Chief of Staff Susan Wiles.

We must have hit the lottery or something, but our kids really enjoy coming and visiting us, or having us visit them. And in even more lottery-winning, our two daughters are married to men who are not dicks, and it appears that our son has also not turned out to be a dick.

And I have exactly zero desire for an IncElCamino (perfect name for those of us who recall the original El Camino.)

Yes, an expensive luxury good shouldn’t get a rebate — even if Elon and Gavin are gonna fight about it.

It looks like the proposal is to exclude electric vehicles that already have a certain percentage of market share.  So expensive luxury goods would still get rebates – just not Tesla.

I enjoyed “Kevin Can F*ck Himself.”  There are a lot of good performances in that show.

We saw one on the road as soon as we entered Maine (in September). It looked as if it was about to fall apart.

We just parked next to an ominous-looking sedan that had no words telling you what kind of car it was. I looked up the insignia and was not surprised to see it was a Tesla.

@MagdaInBlack:  It’s so interesting, but in our friend group of 5 couples (all marriages of 25+ years), when talking about what would happen after the death of our partners (or the end of the marriage), NONE of the women want to get remarried.  All of the men assume they will remarry.

We love our husbands.  But we are Gen X, and those patriarchal scripts are deeply ingrained in all of us.  And we women are just tired of the extra work women generally do in heterosexual relationships.  Because WE TOO are conditioned that way.

We all think it would be easier to live on our own around a group of other women should our guys go.   We have the luxury of being financially secure and not needing a partner for retirement, and we have our kids and don’t want more, so we don’t need men for that either.  Occasional or even regular male companionship, sure, but marriage/living together? Nope.

I think this view is surprisingly common among educated women these days. And one reason the Christian Right wants to shove us back in the kitchen/nursery

ETA:  I guess what I’m saying is, our problem isn’t with men. It’s with patriarchy. We’ve had it. Enough.

Gamergate is still on the crusade. I’ve been witnessed to some of that first hand myself.

I think the line that captures the whole scene: “They built that strawman, and then it won.”

2 hour video about video games and sad men that want the world to revolve around them. It’s very good, contains some very good media criticism, and reveals that the world hasn’t changed in the last decade. Worth noting, that a lot of people believe that there is a straight line from gamergate 15 years ago to this moment. Not that games are particularly relevant to the moment, but that gamergate was the first real exercise in how to radicalize men online, how to infiltrate communities, how to manipulate the media, and everything we see today are just the graduate course of what the freshmen were figuring out in 2009. Steve Bannon was instrumental in Gamergate. He brought those lessons to a bigger fight.

@Geminid: They’re still pretty high. It’s not like the market for used cyber trucks is expanded from the market for new ones, apart from a slightly lower sticker.

They all have wraps because they’re rusting. Even here in SoCal where I don’t think it’s rained since they started shipping they’re all wrapped and showing rust. Now, I think the issue is that loose iron/steel is bonding to the body and that’s what’s rusting – and the lack of rain here means that we have a LOT of loose brake dust and everything else flying around that doesn’t get washed away to bond to that stainless.

Hits close to home because I’ve recently separated after nearly 15 years of marriage and I do worry about becoming one of those undateable men for whom “divorced” is a part of their identity, not a phase of their life. Thankfully, the distribution of domestic labour wasn’t the main reason we split, but they were a feature of some arguments. Enough that simply for my own sake, regardless of whether I ever get close to someone like my ex ever again, I’m working on some of my basic life skills just to feel a bit better about myself and to live a slightly better life under my own direction.

To the original post’s point, I cannot blame women who don’t want to engage with the insane, un-examined assumptions of my gender. I look around and I see a lot of dudes out there who won’t even step over the bar I’m working clearing and resent even the suggestion they should.

    @comrade scotts agenda of rage:

IIUC Tesla had been silent on deliveries (vs. customer deposits) and it was a big big recall that revealed as of October, they had shipped but 27k of the beasts.

The recall history, so far, is epic, but not in that ironic way.

Cybertruck’s Many Recalls Make It Worse Than 91 Percent of All 2024 Vehicles

Since launch, Tesla’s polarizing electric pickup has been beset by quality issues, and is now heading to be one of the most unreliable EVs made yet. Strangely, Cybertruck owners may not care one bit.

Cybertruck owners  have discovered that a chunk of these stainless steel electric pickups could “stop producing torque” while thrumming along. The fault was noted by Tesla in a November 5 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall. Any sudden loss of propulsion might “increase the risk of a collision,” added the filing ominously. The latest recall—the wedge wagon’s sixth this year—requires shop time, not an over-the-air (OTA) update.

Reports of instantaneous loss of e-horsepower due to duff drive inverters—devices that convert DC to AC and control an EV’s motor speed and torque—might alarm the average EV motorist, but to extrovert buyers of Elon Musk’s flagship, it’s evidence of the angular pickup’s edginess, Ivan Drury, the director of insights at car shopping guide Edmunds, told WIRED.

“A standard auto customer wants to know if a car will last 10 years or will be ongoing good value for money,” he says. “A Cybertruck customer doesn’t care about any of that. Owning a Cybertruck isn’t practical; it’s a boast. A boast that ‘I have so much discretionary income I can afford to waste it on an impractical car.’”

Similar to other critics (earlier this year, a CNN reviewer called the pickup a “disturbing level of individual arrogance in hard, unforgiving steel”), Drury believes Cybertruck buyers are people “who think, ‘I don’t care if I kill people when I drive this thing down the street,’” he says. “There aren’t many of those people out there, so there’s a relatively small market for the Cybertruck.”

If Tesla, which was contacted for this piece, is genuinely fishing in smaller pools than originally anticipated by Musk—at a 2023 shareholder meeting he predicted that Cybertruck sales could hit 250,000 by 2025, and reach 500,000 a year once production ramped up—this might help explain the softening of Cybertruck aftersales.
“Used values on these things have plummeted dramatically,” said Drury. Price tracking website  estimates that the average used Cybertruck dropped from $175,000 in April to $110,864 today.

The cheapest Cybertruck on Autotrader was $86,000 earlier this week, and many of the other 276 currently listed on the site sport “recent price drop” banners.

@AM in NC: Retired to the DR, and the expat demographic is interesting. The usual flaunt-it idiots with gated vacation condos abound.  As well as the expected old men looking for young chicas, but the older women…?

I’m 65, and like me, the many single older women here aren’t looking for anyone.  They’re living on their own, walking daily to the colmados, going the beach, enjoying coffee by themselves or with a friend.

A friend said she feels her life now is a reclamation of all the things she was promised, after a life of self sacrifice and service to her family and society that gave absolutely no recognition or reward.

I just realized that people here may not be aware of this.

California is gunning quite directly for Musk. A few months ago the Air Force went to the coastal commission to request approval for more launches for SpaceX at Vandenberg. The coastal commission said no, citing his injection into politics. SpaceX is not a public company, but Musks personally hobby-horse, and the commission didn’t feel that Musks politicization was appropriate. Additionally, the asked why the Air Force was making this request when flights with the US government as customer cannot be blocked by the coastal commission due to the supremacy clause, but the Air Force was asking for increased Starlink missions which the Air Force is not a customer. Why were they here and not Musk himself?

There’s a lot of anger about Musks misinformation campaign that helped bog down CA HSR.

I wish CA would stop subsidizing EVs and keep plowing money into transit. We’ve been making some real progress lately.

I recently watched a video comparing the Cybertruck to other poorly-conceived vehicles that the creator of the video felt were contradictions of the missions of the companies that produced them.   For example, the Edsel was expensive and overly complicated and contradicted Ford’s reputation for repeatable, affordable quality.  The Pontiac Aztek was somewhat ahead of its time and presaged today’s crossovers, but it was contrary to Pontiac’s image as the performance division of GM.   The Cybertruck is a direct contradiction of Tesla’s original design aesthetic and out of whack with their previous product offerings.  He noted that all of the other promised developments from Tesla, including a new roadster and a smaller, cheaper EV, have gone nowhere as development has been hogged by the Cybertruck, which has no features that would be particularly useful for such vehicles.  It’s just a vanity project for Musk, who never was a vehicle designer.  It probably reflects that he thinks he’s the sole reason for the success of Tesla, not that he was mostly adept at producing and marketing a vehicle that was designed by others.   He put stupid constraints on creative designers, which resulted in a vehicle that no one needs.

The Cybertuck does a useful thing.

There’s been an unmet demand for small pickup trucks of any kind for a while now. I think an electric model would have cleaned up.

@AM in NC: I always told my husband that if anything happened to him, I was never remarrying. I was very lucky- he was a unicorn and I knew that I was never going to find anyone else like him. all that patriarchal crap just didn’t exist with him.

He passed away twelve years ago just before I turned 50 and I’ve never even once been tempted to date.

The day after my ex told me she wanted a divorce (she left me for an under-employed alcoholic ex high school football player seven years her junior who she said was beautiful), I decided I would not become an angry divorced guy.

I am happily remarried.  She and her beautiful beau broke up months later.

Kind of a reversal of the usual narrative.

@trollhattan: I’ve heard good things about Ford’s new Maverick hybrid pickups. But they are just beginning to fill the void.

That German truck remonds me of one of the best small trucks of the 1970s. That was Volkswagon’s 4-cylinder diesel truck. They were reliable and economical. I heard that Volkswagon stopped selling them because of political pressure generated by American manufacturers. I’m not sure that’s true, but for whatever reason, they stopped selling them.

Toyota’s small 4 cylinder truck was as good or better, but they stopped selling them here long before they stopped selling them in less wealthy parts of the world. Now their smallest Tacomas are as big as half-ton trucks used to be before had their own growth spurt.

@Math Guy: I have had the “joy” of experiencing a new level of nasty from snowplow drivers since moving here ten years ago; they have waited and watched me hand shovel out my driveway, wave and fill it. They could have pushed snow to other side of street where there is an empty lot but no they push a street’s worth of snow to my side of road. Neighbor next door sends his sons out; so he isn’t one digging out twice.

I’m old enough that it would now have to be my house, left to me by my parents, to be in the same house.

But this world really is changing and hopefully for the better. Because in my lifetime (born in the first half of the last century) I’ve seen more than enough to convince me that many men seem to think that an external sex organ makes them a far better human  than any other. Of course just because they think that always extremely often means they are anything but.

Also do remember that men used to be worse about being the head, in charge, king of whatever. And in the lifetime of humans alive today.

@gene108: they are not as terrible as people think they are.

they are ruining the ‘brand’ of EVs. every coal rolling asshole can now point and laugh and say the whole concept of EV’s is a joke. every venture capitalist will be turned off by Elmo’s ruinous attempt to make EV’s desirable or they will figure EVs are now old news and are done and why put any more money into what will inevitably be another failed attempt to make electric cars marketable. It’s going to set R&D and interest in EV’s in the US back 10 years if not more.

    @Hoodie:

Besides one can buy a better truck that seats five and/or is 4 wheel drive, but an electric pick up? Not yet as far as I know. Of course if you’ve ever seen a cybershittruck up close you’d ask what the hell is this thing good for. It doesn’t haul as much as a Chevy/Ford/Dodge full sized pickup, has no more room than a 4 door conventional pickup from the same mfg mentioned above, is ugly in person. It seems to me to be a toy designed by someone who has never bought, driven or needed an actual pickup truck. If it had come out when I owned a business that I NEEDED a pickup truck for, I likely would laugh at it even harder than I do now. It’s a pickup for someone that doesn’t need a pickup and wants to impress someone that will likely never be impressed, because it is not impressive in the least. I’ve seen one up close at a show. It really did not impress me in the least.

@Hoodie: re: Musk not being a vehicle designer

Oh, it’s worse than that.  He insisted on features that hurt schedule and reliability:

On Tesla’s first car, the Roadster, he made them re-design the seats, dashboard and headlights, and then insisted that it must have a transmission in order to hit 125 mph.  No other EV ever had one.
On the Model X, he drove the decision on the gull-wing doors, which took forever to get right and are still a problem
In 2016 he forced them to make the first self-driving demo video, which was completely rigged.  It still doesn’t work.
On the truck version, the Semi, he insisted that the seat be in the middle, the worst place for getting in and out, and worst for seeing in the blind spot

The actual revolution at Tesla was the Model S, and that design was led by an actual engineer, Peter Rawlinson, not this hype-ster.  Rawlinson then started Lucid, which is building better EVs. The success of SpaceX is largely due to Tom Mueller, who led the Merlin rocket engine design, and Gwynne Shotwell, who actually runs the company and skillfully keeps Musk in the spotlight and away from the engineering.
