I have seen a couple of comments here and there about good Black Friday deals that people might be interested in, so I thought we could maybe collect them all in one place.
MazeDancer mentioned a couple of good streaming deals, the details of which have fallen right out of my head. So I hope she’ll chime in, and I’ll bet there are even more.
Anyone have anything to share? Good deals you have seen? Good deals you are hoping for on a particular product?
Personally, I’m hoping for a good deal on the Breville countertop oven that’s the size of my current one that is 5 years old and starting to rattle. It was on sale $100 off a month or two ago, and in the 3 days I spent talking myself out of it because mine isn’t broken yet, I missed the sale.
Does Apple even have Black Friday sales? Seems like lots of us are thinking of replacing our electronics before Trump takes office. And I suppose the non-Apple peeps may be in the same boat.
For me, it’s partially about the tariffs, and it’s partially because I would love to do my part in making the coveted “people are spending money, things must be good!” credit unavailable to the orange cretin.
BJ Hive Mind, do your thing! I’ll link this is in the sidebar this week for easy reference.
THIS POST IS IN THE SIDEBAR UNDER FEATURING.

Tim Apple was smart to convince Trump to propose tariffs.
TaMara
Peacock and Paramount+ both have good Black Friday deals. I’ll be doing the $20 a year for Peacock again Still thinking about Paramount+ Really wish Apple TV would do even a 90-day deal. I’d jump on it. Hulu has been consistently doing $2.99 a month. All those plans are with commercials.
frosty
LOL, that’s the kind of shopper I am. Agonize about a purchase, put together a spreadsheet to compare features, pick an item, waffle some more …
ETA to get back on topic, I don’t have any suggestions for Black Friday sales, unfortunately.
Chetan Murthy
I’m not much of a shopper, but a friend turned me on camelcamelcamel.com and it seems to be useful. You type in an Amazon product ID and it tracks the price, you can set an alert that’ll email you if the price gets below some threshold.
WaterGirl
@TaMara: Ugh on commercials. Do you know if there is a Peacock offer without commercials?
It just seems wrong to pay for something and get ads too. I just can’t deal with ads anymore.
dmsilev
@TaMara: AppleTV is often available as a pack-in of sorts when buying other things. Best Buy seems to offer it a lot. Might see if there’s anything there that you might want/need that comes as a combo.
WaterGirl
@Baud: What did I miss?
Baud
@WaterGirl:
Nothing. I was just joking that Apple is going to have a good sales month because of everyone’s fear of tariffs.
Lyrebird
The Opinionated Ogre on Substack is teasing a Black Friday deal. Regular subscription is $5/mo, $50/yr.
Alert: The first image at that link is two flipped birds that look like they’re aimed at the reader, though they are more likely meant to be aimed at MAGA voters.
I have heard conflicting opinions:
Shop alot while we still have POTUS in the White House!
Don’t buy anything this weekend, deny MAGA their gloating!
I don’t know.
Lyrebird
True that.
Dr. Fungus
@TaMara: I got a three month Apple TV trial via Target Circle. Looks lIke the offer is still active.
WaterGirl
@Baud: oh, okay, got it! I had seen something earlier this week about Tim Apple :-) developing a relationship with Trump so they thought maybe Apple could be an exception to tariffs one everything. I was trying to fit your comment in with that.
Another Scott
@Chetan Murthy: +1
I was just going to suggest that. It’s very handy for big purchases that can have big swings in price (I’ve used it for some spendy computer parts).
Best wishes,
Scott.

I just picked up an HP Pavilion laptop from Costco today for $500 (after a $300 discount that is good until Dec. 2.) Link here. I’m not a tech guru, but I did a fair bit of research and it looks like a solid choice for a very good price.
ETA: I like supporting Costco not only for the good deals but for the fact that the founder is/was a Democrat and spoke at the DNC in years past. They seem to treat their workers better than the typical big box store.
WaterGirl
@Another Scott: Are we getting best wishes now because there is no longer a prize option? :-)
jonas
We’re not really in the market for any major durable good or electronics purchases right now, so “meh” is basically how I feel about Black Friday. Plus I have a bad cold. So “feh!” also, too.
Another Scott
Not Max has a big list of streaming specials, downstairs.
Best wishes,

Another Scott
@WaterGirl: Indeed.
“Cheers” seems very inappropriate now. :-/
Best wishes,

WaterGirl
@Another Scott: Tell him not to be lazy and to come up here and copy and paste his info here.
oops, I mean “ask” :-)
WaterGirl
@Another Scott: Indeed, indeed.

@Lyrebird: MAGA have no need of evidence to either vote or gloat. Follow your own whim. My personal tradition was to not to buy on black Friday but that has increasingly become a sort of lenten season so I’ve made exceptions for local stores and groceries. Pure whim in the proud tradition of declaring a beaver a fish.
Just Some Fuckhead
We don’t do Black Friday to shop. We do it to fight and blow off a little steam after listening to Uncle Lenny carry on all day about the NFL being rigged.
TaMara
@WaterGirl: Oh, an Acorn deal. That will be my first one, for sure.
TaMara
@Just Some Fuckhead: [[[waves]]] Good to see you

This year we have the joy of shopping for the world’s most easy-to-please variety of human: 4 yr old twins and their 3-yr-old cousin. The older ones want chapter books (recently our daughter read Charlotte’s Web and The Boxcar Children to them), and those seek and find things from Highlights. Turns out they can all understand how to do dominoes, minus the scoring.
Also, nothing has to be new, and clothes that approximately fit are just fine with them, as long as there’s lots of color and nothing pokey. They’re good at inventing games without elaborate props.
Having raised their mothers, I know very well how limited this phase is and I intend to make the absolute most of it. :) The three of them have only one tv show: Bluey. In a pinch, anything with that guy’s face on it is golden.

Looking for a different timeline. Anything out there?

And here I am feeling guilty again about being outside the MAGA insanity zone’s blast radius and not having to worry quite so much about an idiotic trade war. Although … for some reason, Black Friday is a thing in Greece. Don’t ask me why. Some days, I swear, this country…

That Breville countertop toaster oven goes on ‘$100 off’ sales pretty regularly. Still not at all cheap at $300, but a useful kitchen item once you’ve figured out where to put it— I never use the oven in my range anymore. As reviews have noted, it’s very good at baking and air frying, and perhaps ironically, not so good at toasting.
MisterForkbeard
Seeing a lot of “If you want to buy electronics you should do it now” commentary. “Black Friday” sales started a few weeks ago, so you can do a lot of this stuff now.
Some very good trade-in deals on Samsung phones, if you run that way. Just us the Samsung App. I gave them an old semi-busted phone and got their flagship folding phone for ~$400.
Otherwise: Some very cheap and good laptops out there. Likewise, some very good TVs and appliances you can find at BestBuy at the moment.
If you want a cheap, good, handheld computer you can get a handheld gaming PC (Lenovo Legion Go) for $500 from a number of locations. I picked one up last week and like it a lot. It’s a weird cross between a PC and a Nintendo Switch.
narya
Apple is offering Apple gift cards on some purchases (including $200 for the MacBook that I’ve been eyeing)–it’s only through Dec 2, though, so don’t wait. I’m going to buy the laptop then use the $200 on a new phone.
King Arthur has Staub 4-quart pots on sale for $130 (usually $350) and the new Big Book of Bread is $30 instead of $45. I got the book and it’s really wonderful for bread bakers; I already have a pot so was only slightly tempted to get a different color.
Kayla Rudbek
I’m debating whether I should get a new refrigerator or whether I should wait until this one dies. The refrigerator is at least a decade old (was here when we moved in) and I am suspicious that the gaskets around the doors may need replacement (the doors don’t close as tightly as they used to). Microwave, washer, dryer, and dishwasher have been replaced by us, stove is still working fine although the flat top could use some cleaning. HVAC and hot water heater are working fine for now (having a space heater in the living room fireplace helps with heat, this is a townhouse). The space heater/fireplace insert is from Vivohome, I got it off Amazon in 2021 to stick into our unused fireplace to look like a real fire, the bonus is that it’s a good space heater for our living room as well.
I would consider a toaster oven but I’d have to find room on the counter for it, so not likely.
I have light fixtures to be installed in the front hallway and dining room, I should probably get new bookshelves for the living room and dining area, and maybe new ventilation fans and light fixtures for the bathrooms. I should also look at getting more painting supplies and a new carpet for the living room as those probably are made outside the USA as well.
And of course Lego is also from outside the USA, a lot of paper books are printed in China, most of my craft supplies probably have some origin outside the USA, etc etc etc.
Gary Trauner
Love the Breville countertop air fryer oven. Worth every penny, especially if you can get $100 off. Also, we rarely use our regular oven anymore…

Paprika 3 Recipe Manager App is on sale again for half off – $2.99 per device for Android or iPhone, 14.99 for Windows or Mac. It’s a one-time cost per device, not a subscription. And it syncs flawlessly between devices.
If you’re a recipe hoarder (raises hand), it’s better than sliced, no-knead bread.

@scav: yeah, I feel a lot better about going to Old Town Alexandria and spending money at the small businesses who are part of Plaid Friday (and who send me emails about it; fibre space, Stitch Sew Shop, Pacers, etc).
I am ticked off that the new romance bookstore which opened up in Old Town Alexandria earlier this month had a fire in their building and lost $45K of inventory before I could even get a chance to stop by. https://gofund.me/c77f4aea

@Miki: I can vouch for this app! And I heard about it from Diane Duane who is also a happy user (and author of my favorite Irish cookbook as well as great SF/F, https://ebooks.direct and recipes at https://www.dianeduane.com/outofambit/category/recipes/)

@Miki: I’ve heard good things about Paprika. I use (and would also recommend) a similar app called AnyList.

Costco has a $25 off on delivery orders over $100 from now until December 11. I am taking the opportunity to get a delivery of coffee, pecans and toilet paper. I don’t know if you have to have a membership to use it or not (if you do, you probably got an email about it, like I did) but the code is novsameday3msuccr.

@Lyrebird: it’s small business Saturday November 30 so I encourage a blackout on Black Friday and go patronize your favorite local retailers on Saturday.
We decided to buy local as much as possible this Xmas, went to a holiday fair yesterday and bought all sorts of gifts. We’re going to another one this weekend. Yes, this is the opposite of getting deals…the merchandise at these bazaars is a little pricey…but I’m thinking this Xmas might be a more feel good one than the ones coming down the pike.

I wanted to try Walmart Plus and get rid of Amazon Prime (f*ck Jeff Bezos). Walmart has a $48/year Black Friday special that includes Paramount Plus. My P+ was about to renew at $60/year. So I got Wally Plus and Paramount for less than just the streaming service.
Maxim
@narya: Ooh, I needed a new pot. Thanks!

I have used countertop ovens instead of the big one for decades and have had a few brands and models.
The worst….Breville. It cost over $300 and the electric panel died 15 months in, after the warranty expired. I somehow got them to agree to exchange it and the replacement was either refurbished and/or defective because it sounded like an airplane when using the convection setting. Was crappy at toast too (granted, countertop ovens are not a good substitute for a real toaster). I had wanted that Breville oven for so long, talked myself out of it many times because it cost a lot more and now I hated the fucking thing.
After some research, I bought a Calphalon at Costco and I liked it so much when it was on sale 2 years later, I bought another one, which is still in my basement yet to be used. The old one is getting a little loud so maybe I’ll wrap up the new one this year.

The HP Smart -Tank 6001 Wireless Cartridge-Free all in one printer is nominally $345, but frequently available for $240. It’s currently $220 at both Amazon and Staples, so if you’re looking for a color printer with low consumable cost (allegedly) this is worth a look.

Maybe one of you technical people can help me out. I don’t know whether I really want to do this, because I’ve been without any kind of TV in my bedroom for decades, but …
I don’t have cable or an antenna, all “TV watching” I do is streaming on my desktop (in the living room), but every once in a while I think it would be nice to watch a movie while lying in bed.
My question is, is there a monitor or flatscreen TV that can run wirelessly in my bedroom (except for plugging in for power) and stream content through my desktop in the living room?
cvannatta
If you like playing around with computer graphics, but find the price of Adobe Photoshop and the subscription-required model to be unappealing, I recommend Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher. The programs work on Windows, Mac, and IPad. Their Black Friday deal is 50% off (don’t know when it ends), so you get all three applications for a one-time payment of $83.
P.S. Affinity can open and use Photoshop PSD files, but it can’t handle any complex special effects.
Miki
@narya: Yep. There’s a ChatGPT to Paprika Hack I’ve used to preserve recipes from a recipe book put together by my grandmother and her sisters many, many years ago. I took a photo of the recipe then had ChatGPT convert it to text. As a bonus I asked it to create directions for me. Took some cleanup but now I have a wonderful digital copy of the recipe in my Paprika, with the photo of the handwritten recipe inside the copy.
I use Google lens to process photos of recipes from cookbooks, then copy/paste into a blank recipe in Paprika, adding in my handwritten notes if I have some.
For the past several years I’ve been checking out e-book cookbooks from the library, reading them on the Kindle app, highlighting the recipes I want then copying the highlights from my Kindle Notes and Highlights page into a blank recipe on Paprika. (TBH, I only buy e-books now.)
Copy/paste from paper or e-books is putsy, but it works. The web downloads are the simplest, and there’s tons of stuff out there.

Costco has all of their new iPads on sale until December 2nd. From $50 to $150 off, depending on the model and amount of memory. I purchased a new iPad Pro to replace my current iPad Pro (2017). Except for the battery life, my current one works perfectly. They are beasts. Delivery was $4.99 but free if you pick up in the warehouse.

This Black Friday, I am looking for a solution. Some of the leggings I have been wearing (cheapies from Costco) have been giving me a rash on my legs. I had some nicer ones from Athleta that were a gift, and they felt great and didn’t cause any rash, but I fell and tore them. I’m going to be looking at the nicer workout brands (Athleta, Lululemon, Alo, etc.) for nicer workout clothes.
I hate when the expensive stuff ends up being worth it.
Martin
Apple used to do black friday deals but they were almost always just things in their own stores and usually some freebie if you buy something else at full price (a free case if you buy an iPhone, that kind of thing). They pretty much never jumped on the broader Black Friday bandwagon because honestly, I don’t think it achieves anything. Black Friday deals are usually low-end crap for absurd prices because they are low-end crap.
They also have a bit of a problem that their stores cannot accommodate Black Friday crowds.
rikyrah
I bought sheets and a couple of down comforters from macys.com based on a tip from a BJ poster yesterday.

TaMara mentioned the Peacock deal I touted before.
That’s the only streaming deal I’ve seen,
But the other good deal I mentioned before was at Macys.com. Basically 80% off linens. Got a $130 comforter for $25. And two sets of high thread count sheets for similar discounts. Free shipping included.
ETA: Paramount+ offers 5 bucks a month, with ads, if you pay for a year. But if you go for a month, it’s 7.99. Or 12.99 without ads.
Plenty to watch on Paramount, but think I will go for 4 times a year, I pay for a month without ads. And binge. Same price.

The Panasonic infrared toaster oven is on sale right now at Amazon for $125. It does toast pretty well. I actually have it and a Breville. I use the Breville for oven stuff and the Panasonic quick toaster oven stuff. The Panasonic needs no preheating and is really quick for things bagels, pizza slices, heating buns, soft pretzels, etc. I actually use it much more often than my Breville.

What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?
I have a question about a black Friday deal if anyone knows about tires. Pep Boys has a 2 for 1 deal on Kumho TA51a or Cooper Adventurer tires. Anyone know if those are decent? Mostly concerned with stopping power and wet and winter performance over a quiet ride.
The tires I have are Firestone but I was disappointed in their durability. Two got big gashes in the sidewalls not all that long after I got them so I’m looking at different brands.

Traditionally, the only time Apple offers any deals directly is Thanksgiving weekend, but I haven’t had a need for a new device come up close to Thanksgiving for a while, so I don’t know for sure what they do. But it never has been deeply slashed prices, more like $100 of a MacBook Pro. If you want a deal on an iPhone, your best bet is a place like Best Buy or a carrier’s store.

The only Black Friday deal I would be interested in would be if Archway cookies replenished their stock of Pfeffernusse at Redners.
We bought a new Balsam Hill tree last month with a 50% off deal. We had our granddaughter visit this past weekend. I assembled and she decorated, so now we have our tree up the earliest ever. It’s kind of heresy since Christmas begins on December 25th.
Our pericope study group today discussed the texts for December 8th: Malachi 3:1-4, Philippians 1:3-11, and Luke 3:1-6.
In Malachi, “the messenger of the covenant…is like a refiner’s fire, (who) will purify the Levites…until they present offerings of righteousness.” In Philippians, Paul praises the community and prays that they “may overflow with knowledge and full insight…so that in the day of Christ (they) may produce a harvest of righteousness.”
In Luke, John the Baptist begins his ministry in the wilderness “preaching a baptism for the forgiveness of sins…so that all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”
I learned that silver is considered refined when you can see your reflection in it. We wondered if corruption is a leisure activity, something those with too much time and power do. Ordinary people often think sin is bad stuff we say or do, but theologically it is a belief system that warps how we live, one ordered on hierarchies of race, class and gender that all of us internalize, one expressed in dysfunctional relationships and power without accountability. Being refined (transformed) is the last thing any of us want to do. We talked about our own struggles in this regard, and how we all need koinonia, a deep and abiding community of support, because none of us can do it alone. And then we noted how God always acts in the midst of particular times and places — the passage in Luke begins with a list of seven rulers who held the sick power of life and death — and John shows up not in centers of power, but at the margins.
I know, I know, the nerve of some people’s official religious guy to inject religion in what is nominally (essentially?) a religious holy day. It’s my Black Friday deal — a time to reflect.

@Poe Larity: it’s getting ready for the new maladministration and planning on cutting back spending after the inauguration. So Q1 should look bad by comparison, correct?

And for those of you with long hair and a desire to keep it out of your face (particularly when exercising), Sweaty Bands is having a sale as well. https://www.sweatybands.com/

Black Friday is when Walmart minimum wage workers get trompled to death by shoppers?
Cannot justify any deal in that circumstance, so never did it and never will.

@Suzanne:
I’ve watched clips on YT, it’s genuinely a great show, not just for kids, but everyone of all ages, with lots of great lessons.
Unlike a lot of shows for that demo, the adult characters are pretty fleshed out and relatable.
Bandit and Chilli are the blueprint for good parents
Suzanne
@Steve in the ATL: It’s a pretty common thing observed in child development and social science that girls will watch/read stories with boys as the main characters and relate, and the stories are seen as more universal. But boys have been observed to be more resistant to stories centering girls and their experiences, and they’re viewed more as a niche interest. Like the pejorative “chick lit”.
So. Having a show intended for a general kids’ audience that doesn’t have a boy child character is indeed quietly revolutionary.

Ali Velshi highlighted one of the many banned books out there. What the fuck is morally wrong with you that you could object to a Jodi Picoult book?

Just a reminder that while Apple would never be so gauche and crass as to offer holiday deals, juicers can use my employee discount all year round! (15% off)
Email WaterGirl for a hook up. And never pay full price for new Apple products!

@sab:
I feel you. I’m concerned that tomorrow is going to be a bad day, since it involves spending hours with evangelical “Christian” in-laws. Already told the spousal unit that if someone offers prayerful thanks for the election of the orange beast, I’m walking – family or no. I will not break bread with those who express thanks for the election of a lying, cheating, cruel, morally corrupt neo-Nazi freak. Which MIGHT give offense to some of those present tomorrow.
zhena gogolia
@danielx: Yeah, I would not be able to do that.
I’m still mulling what to do about person who told someone in May that they were voting for Trump. I don’t see them that often, but I think I may be done with them.
danielx
@zhena gogolia:
Fortunately I don’t have to spend much time with them except at holidays, and after tomorrow I may be able to evade those occasions as well.
PatrickG
@Steve in the ATL: neat, I don’t even have to do my own marketing anymore! ;)

@MattF: Toasters aren’t particularly good at toasting anymore.

@PatrickG: got your back! [fist bump emoji]

@Miki: So if it’s $2.99 for an iPhone and $14.99 for a Mac but syncs between devices does that mean I can buy it for iPhone and sync it with my Mac?

I’m kind of honored to be on the Liberals-For-Genocide/Vote-Blue-No-Matter-Who lists. Yes, I believe in the Dem Party and oppose antisemitism even when it is masquerading as Anti-Zionism. Guilty as charged (laughing emoji)

@Martin:
Have been an Apple fanboy for over 40 yrs. First one I bought was an Apple II computer in the late 70s. Replaced a teletype machine we were using to create 1 inch punched tape for our machine tools.
And I fully agree that I’ve never been in an Apple store that was not at over 1/2 capacity and have walked on by on a few occasions as they were FULL.

I know you’re all dyin’ to know about a classical music sale – I’ve gotcha covered here:

Am I too late for this thread? I need a Black Friday replacement for my 12 yo Microsoft Surface Pro that’s my main/only computer. I need to update to Win11 and I don’t think it will stand up to that abuse. And I don’t know if my pocketbook will stand up to the abuse of a brand new Surface Pro.

@danielx:
Aw the advantage of being the oldest extended family member – and living a fair number of miles from the next closest. My holidays are always easy – pretty much the same as any other day. Of course there is always wash day once in a while…..
Lyrebird
Excellent point. And yes I do try to make it a no-shopping day usually. Might go get a Covid booster at a locally-owned pharmacy, doubt there will be lines there!
That’s super. We have a really awesome local bookshop that you have just reminded me to patronize.

@UncleEbeneezer:
Blocked by Nazis, I’m so honored.
Suck it Bari Weiss!
Another Scott
@Kayla Rudbek: Yeah, the US economy depends on goods moving in and out. Lots of bad things could happen with a trade war…
Amazon is huge and manipulative, but one of the things I’ve noticed the last few years is that lots of their books seem to be print-on-demand.
I ordered a book on FreeCAD on November 23, got it on November 25 and looking at the bottom of the last page I see – “Made in USA, Columbia, SC, 23 November 2024”.
Print on demand is a good thing, especially for books long out of (conventional) print, but obviously isn’t helpful to conventional bookstores and the like… :-/
Best wishes,
Scott.

@zhena gogolia: Back then the choice was Biden or Trump; once the choice was Harris or Trump they could have changed.
Probably not, but you should probably check.

@KayInMD (formerly Kay (not the front-pager)): Is a very generic Windows laptop a solution? If so, you could consider this one from Staples (I have 3 of them myself)
Touchscreen laptops are pricier…

@cvannatta:
I heavily recommend Affinity.
Not specifically Black Friday but for the next day or so Humble Bundle have a deal on Corel.
You can get Draw. Painter, Paint Shop Pro plus a stack of Brush Packs for $35 which is an absolute steal. They’re the full products, they do this every year around this time, just before next years iteration is released

@WaterGirl: welcome to Balloon Juice After Dark!

@Shana: Yes. I use it on my Pixel 6, my Kindle Fire, and my laptop. They’re all synced.

@danielx: I have got to admire this.
I don’t have such family. I don’t have much family, but my sister never became an asshole politically even when we had our ups and downs at times. My mother’s political instincts survived late stage Alzheimer’s before she died. Not sure how, but she knew whom to make faces at even in her decline.
So I’m not sure what I’d do. I might wait a bit and then say something. But I probably wouldn’t be exactly quiet. And I do hang out with folks who would be grateful for the evil guy’s win, for various reasons, given where I live. But they know what I think.
So any way, props to you for that.
mvr
@Ruckus: Not big on things I can’t take apart and try to fix, so Apple has been on my not-to-buy list despite Jobs’s connections with my undergrad institution. But other folks I know love/like them.

I absolutely love this infrared toaster oven. Plus, it’s small.
