ACA Open Enrollment Reminder

Just a reminder, Open Enrollment for the ACA has its first big deadline at 11:59PM local time on December 15th. Individuals who choose their plans before that time will have their policies go live on January 1, 2025. Individuals in all states other than Idaho will have Open Enrollment Periods extend to January 15, 2025.

Even if you like your policy this year, go in and check things out. Your networks might change, your premium subsidy likely changes (work under review right now), and your options might change. Spend 20-30 minutes confirming that this hugely consequential decision is still a decent one.

    This Propublica article about a bad actor in Helena Montana cancer treatment calls out a number of failures. One that David might have a particular interest in is the insurance industry failures. The first character in the story was a person diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer that was getting covered treatments for 11 years.

    The Warwicks and St. Peter’s eventually settled the case for an undisclosed amount. Weiner was not held liable because he was a hospital employee. Neither the family nor their attorney have solved the mystery of why three private health insurers paid for 11 years of Stage 4 lung cancer treatment. None of the companies responded when I asked.

    More in plain sight stuff:

    Evidence of that high-volume business was hiding in plain sight, in data published by CMS. An analysis of Medicare Part B billing data shows that, from 2013 to 2020, Weiner billed for 40,000 15-minute visits, more than any other doctor — of any specialty — in the nation. The publicly available data offers just a glimpse of what St. Peter’s knew was a much bigger problem. “He’d see 15 patients in 30 minutes,” LaClair told me. This made Weiner rich and apparently missed the gaze of insurance regulators.

    @JaySinWA:

    That was a very scary story.  Very well reported, I hope it gets a lot of attention.

    Hi David, I wanted to echo others’ thanks for your sharing your expertise.  I have a minor question: my dad is moving from Florida to Alabama.  My understanding is he has to cancel his Florida Medicare & Medicaid before he can apply for Alabama insurance.  My sister is driving him from FL to AL, so I am thinking he should not cancel until after he arrives in AL, just in case something happens on the road.  Doesn’t this arrangement still leave him with a period of time when he is not covered while applying for insurance in AL and is there anything we can do about this to make the transition more seamless?

    @RevRick: And I added it a Bluesky. Apparently David hasn’t posted it there yet.

    Subsidies are way down this year.  My portion of the premium is going from $3/month to $288/month.
