I knew Belushi had moves, but I do not recall Dan Ackroyd having moves like this!
Ramalama
I forgot they had those moves. Can’t think of any other movie than Blues Brothers having so much musical star power, star amplification, star ramplage.
My BIL grew up on the street where they shot a lot of the movie, and so of course the wedding was Blues Brother themed. My sister, the bride, was like, “Yeah fine.” But it was fun.
Miss Bianca
@WaterGirl: This one popped up for me recently in a “Best of SNL” compilation someone did (the Guardian?) and I had the same reaction!
Old School
You need to watch The Blues Brothers again.
As, I guess we all do. It’s a great flick.
UncleEbeneezer
Had my first in-person meeting with my therapist yesterday and it went well. We have good chemistry, she seems very warm, non-judgmental, supportive etc.
Also, finally got paid for my PUSD coaching gig. Our season ended 11/1 and they were slow as hell to cut checks. But we just booked our trip to Mexico City so the timing was perfect.
Today, my wife gave me an early B-day present of an Italian suit. I’ve been needing one for fancy occasions and our trip to the ballet in a couple weeks. It will need some tailoring adjustments, but should work. I really should’ve gotten one when we were in Vietnam (you can get high-quality, tailored suits real cheap over there). Now I just need some dress shoes and DAMN they are pricey (shocked emoji).
Also looks like I may go to Denver for a few days over the holidays.
JML
I love the OG Blues Brothers stuff. Lot of joy and fun in those performances. Aykroyd really knew his stuff too, and always has had a deep love of the blues. (and a lot of the old-timers they loved got wider recognition because of the Blues Brothers, who were always very upfront about who the real guys were)
hell of a band they assembled too.
Martin
@UncleEbeneezer: For anyone who has never seen the Top Gear Vietnam trip, it’s really good, and includes a trip to have suits made.
WaterGirl
As long as we’re at it, one of my favorite movie scenes of all time. Always lifts my spirits.
JML
@Martin: I love the big long trips they did on Top Gear. the Vietnam one was great, especially Clarkson utterly failing the driving test.
comrade scotts agenda of rage
@UncleEbeneezer:
Manage to stay thru the 4th and you can come to our meetup!
If not, and interested, some of us could probably get together.
NotMax
Oldie but goody.
:)
UncleEbeneezer
@Martin: Thanks. I’ll have to check that out.
rikyrah
I got my COVID booster and Flu shot on Sunday.
No issues.
Ruckus
@NotMax:
Haven’t seen that in a while. Worth seeing again…..
Gin & Tonic
@UncleEbeneezer: I dunno, my son had a suit made in VN some years back, and it wasn’t very good. I guess you have to know your stuff and know where to go, but he ended up disappointed.
David_C
It helped that the backup band had Steve Cropper, Donald “Duck” Dunn, and Lou Marini (the ones I recognize in the video).
The bros were seriously talented.
WaterGirl
@David_C: Yeah, I had no idea who Blue Lou or any of those guys were until that movie. So much talent.
TBone
@NotMax: that was really cute and made me smile!
rikyrah
What kind of delusional nonsense is this?

Donald Trump walked away from *four* different bipartisan compromises to solve the DACA crisis he created in his first term.
It’s time to negotiate in good faith and fix our broken immigration system.
Democrats remain ready.

DCrefugee
I saw that on live TV one Saturday night long, long ago…
zhena gogolia
@DCrefugee: Me too.
UncleEbeneezer
@Gin & Tonic: That’s what worried me. Also it was like 90 degrees and 50% humidity and I had very little interest in getting into a suit, even just for measurements. I was much more interested in your namesake. The G&T’s in Vietnam were so good!
frosty
It’s open on a tab in your browser because the other night you were making us aware that you’d never seen Princess Bride or Young Frankenstein and you were being chided. I was thinking about asking if you’d ever seen Blues Brothers and somehow you’re browser stole my thoughts.
Gin & Tonic
@UncleEbeneezer: I miss the iced coffee, and the sugarcane juice with lime (nuoc mia) from the street vendors.
WaterGirl
@rikyrah: Stating that you remain ready for negotiating in good faith costs nothing. It sets the table for clarity when Trump tells Dems to fuck off.
WaterGirl
@frosty: I have been a Blues Brothers fan from day 1.
frosty
@WaterGirl: Yes quite the moves! And Aykroyd is no slouch on the harp either.
EntroPi
@Gin & Tonic: how’s your power doing?
I’m in PVD, and currently have 2 fires going in case we’re in for a longer term outage.
it is surprisingly difficult to get a fire started when you can’t see the firewood.
SpaceUnit
From what I’ve read the whole SNL cast in the 70’s were doing so much coke that they couldn’t help but dance like that.
frosty
@Ramalama: Blues Brothers hit at the right time to get all the R&B stars together before they passed on, even including Cab Calloway! Getting Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn from Booker T and the MGs (Stax house band) for their band was brilliant, too.
I need to watch this again!
Nancy
Now you have to see The Princess Bride. And Young Frankenstein.
frosty
@JML: My favorite Top Gear trip was South America where they drove the Road of Death in Bolivia.
TBone
TIL that the CEO of Walmart is named Doug McMillion (minus one i). On the nose.

Gin & Tonic
@EntroPi: So far so good.
WaterGirl
@Nancy: Well, I saw Blues Brothers when it came out, more than once!
But I will try Princess Bride. The scene that was posted on Medium Cool was very funny. I cannot believe how young he looked!
Miss Bianca
@SpaceUnit: Well, that’s one theory, anyway! *snort*.
frosty
@WaterGirl: Duh, of course! You’re a Chicago girl. Or Illinois, at least.
WaterGirl
@frosty: You were right the first time, Chicago girl. We all saw it!
Renie
@WaterGirl:
Late to the thread but WaterGirl if you see this thanks so much for posting them singing. As soon as I started the video, I thought of the scene with Aretha Franklin and was so happy to see that posted!
Great pick-me-up.
TheOtherHank
@SpaceUnit:
Watching them explode into those moves, my first thought was “Cocaine is a hell of a drug.”
West of the Rockies
I must be missing something. I’ve never found either Belushi funny. I’m not trying to piss on the parade, just saying opinions vary.
WaterGirl
@Renie: Yeah, both were pick-me-ups for me, too!
We have to learn how to feed our souls while we’re fighting the good fight. :-)
At least I do! If we collapse in exhaustion rage and despair, we’re no good to anyone.
CliosFanBoy
I remember when that first aired. We were sitting around sipping beers in my frat house, and we were like, “WTF is this? Is this a comedy sketch? Is this really the musical act?”
raven
@WaterGirl: For years, at Illini. basketball games they had this!
raven
Belushi was from Wheaton and he used the names of two of my friends (and his), Silvio Insana and Steve Beshekas in SNL skits. Steve was killed in his apartment trying to save his cat. The cat survived the fire but didn’t make it.
Miss Bianca
@West of the Rockies: Eh, chacun a son gout. And shit.
Or would that be, ‘et merde’?
WaterGirl
@raven: I had forgotten about them!

@West of the Rockies:
Never fear, I ( preemptively retreats to bunker) never found The Princess Bride funny. On the other hand I love The Blues Brothers. As you say, opinions vary.
Mr. Bemused Senior
@kalakal: aww. I have watched the Princess Bride numerous times, first with my children, more recently with my grandchildren. I wouldn’t call it “funny,” rather highly enjoyable. The kids love it.
[ETA WisDems did a script reading with the original cast back in 2020. A few technical glitches but still a hoot.]
brantl
@West of the Rockies: Did you ever see the skit “Samurai Tailor”? It had Buck Henry in it, too.
Mr. Bemused Senior
@brantl: “but there’s no fly…”
kalakal
@Mr. Bemused Senior:
It’s just one of those things. So many people have recommended it to me, I’ve tried to watch it several times. Part of the problem is it nearly works for me but fails. When I’ve tried to watch it ( never made it all the way through) I just find it utterly predictable. I can practically say the lines before the actors ( this is when I get to bits I haven’t seen yet )
Mr. Bemused Senior
@kalakal: hey, no problem. Tony Jay doesn’t like Jazz. I don’t understand it but I can accept it.
Timill
@kalakal: You say that like it’s a problem…

I hope that there might be some interest in a holiday music thread- there’s so much lovely music, and the light in darkness/hope for brighter days ahead might be a lovely space for exploring new or familiar songs or music, some sacred space, a respite from fuckery, solace and whatnot
I know my old heart could use it.

@laura: Here is Vaughan Williams’s wonderful Christmas cantata “Hodie“.
Steve LaBonne
@laura: And his lovely Fantasia on Christmas Carols, which I sang (not the solo!) in my church choir some years ago.
