Glad to hear your father is doing better

Good to hear. All my best wishes. Sucks to have so many people dependent on you. But abandoning them is not an alternative. I know you know you are doing the right thing, but fucking fucking fuck, sometimes doing the right thing is just exhausting.

Very, very best wishes for Joelle this morning (we’re all in the same time zone….), and thanks for the Dad saga/outlook. Anyone who could father you is a tough SOB.
And yeah, wait for later to crash. Love you guys.

All the best to your dad!

Syrian kids should back in school today, for the second day in a row. They shut down when the civil war heated up end of November, but now the country is peaceful enough school can resume. The new government has a lot more rebuilding to do but the reopening schools is tangible progress and demonstrates stability.
Yesterday HTS leader Mohammed Al-Jolani delivered remarks about where Syria is at now and how the new interim government intends move forward. I expect this will be big news and will be covered in detail by media sites like Middle East Eye, AFP etc.
I saw some excerpts and it looked like Al-Jolani* covered a lot of ground. He emphasized the need to get basic services including electrical service, bakeries and the like, and then rebuild Syria’s economy.
He also indicated that independent militias would have to disarm. Al-Jolani did not name nnames here and he didn’t set a date, but this would appear to affect the US-supported Syrian Democratic Forces and their YPG militia.
The US has troops based in Northeast Syria that have worked with the YPG since 2013, so the US has a practical interest in the status of the YPG. That mission is expected to pulled by Trump when his team takes over Middle East policy. It looks like this question will be resolved between the HTS government and Syrian Kurdish political leaders.
The US Army mission is still active though, and this weekend its forces occupied a base near the city of Kobani that the Russians just evacuated. Hopefully the new Syrian government will be capable of securing the area by the time the US troops have to leave.
* One interesting note: Al-Jolani now goes by Ahmed Al-Sharaa. “Mohammed Al-Jolani” was his nom de guerre.

The Eagles beat the Steelers and Josey Wales has been alert, affectionate, and active all night (I was awake for most of last night) – walking all over the house, rubbing against my legs, purring, and eating every so often. He always makes a comeback whenever I’m sure he’s going downhill. I know it’s temporary, but I am so very grateful for this time with him. He discovered that he loves to make biscuits in the warmth of the sheepskin rug in front of the fireplace, something new for him. We got 5″ of beautiful snow overnight and the sky was so bright last night that I could see outside almost like daylight and watched a group of eight or nine deer paw through the snow to get whatever is green underneath. Even later, I went outside to stand in and catch some of the huge clusters of falling flakes for a bit. It is a lovely sight to behold before any other human has, in the silent, white night.

Glad to hear about Josey!

@TBone: Glad to hear the good news about Josey!
(We are hoping to visit PA again one of these days. Philly, mostly, but email me if we should try for a get-together? I don’t remember how far from the city you are.)

@Geminid: I saw a funny exchange about Al-Jolani on Arabic Twitter. There’s a picture out of him working on a meal in a small plain kitchen, ladle in hand. “Nathalie” from Lebanon posted the picture and the comment;
A Syrian woman responded:
Much good-natured banter ensued.

@Liminal Owl:
Thank you for all the good thoughts – I truly believe in their power. They help me, in turn, to stay calm and happy for Josey. So he gets the good vibes.
I’m three hours from Philly, Liminal, in a place where no one else who doesn’t know where they’re going ever ends up, unless they’re attending Bucknell! That’s my way to say I’m in a tiny college town about an hour and a half north of Harrisburg. If you’re gonna be in central PA definitely let me know. There isn’t all that much to do or see unless you like the movie Groundhog Day, hahaha! But we’ve got Small Town Pennsylvania out the wazoo.
I had intended to make the hop skip jump back to my home locale after we sold our cabin on the shores of Penns Creek. But hubby had a heart attack during the sale, and we bought here very close to the hospital. I thought we’d move after a year or two of recovery. Then Covid hit, home prices went bonkers, and here I sit looking wistfully at real estate listings in Chester and Delaware Counties but guffawing at the differences in the price of literally everything between here and there. List price, property taxes, utilities, and more make me immobile and almost glad I am in the hinterlands.

@TBone: But was the sky bright enough to see the UFOs?????
PS Thanks to the Iggles for helping the Ravens!

Sending my best wishes to Joelle. And great news about your dad.

It took me a minute to parse this properly.
Perplexed. Cole is in AZ, and he has to rush to WV because Dad is doing well? What about Joelle’s surgery? Oh, right.
Hospital is for Joelle’s surgery. Sending good thoughts.

Godspeed!

Thinking of you both, hope all goes well.
