Anne Laurie is working on something so I’ll just put this up for now since you’ve all been neglected. Merry Christmas to all who celebrate, Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate, and good evening to the rest of you.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah everyone
Geminid
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to you, Goku-san! I hope it’s been a good holiday for you and yours.
H.E.Wolf
5 years ago, I bought a silly light-up wreath for reasons. I just carpenter’s-tape’d it to the inside of our upstairs window so our next-door neighbors can see it.
Yesterday I discovered that the tween-age neighbor, of the family two doors down, shares my feelings about homemade shortbread. I.e., we roll our eyes upward in ecstasy at the first bite.
And of such things are winter holiday memories made.
Wishing everyone a happy festival of light returning!

Glad to see your ‘nyms. Best wishes for resilience and joy in the coming year!

Ran 10K this afternoon, then took a nap. Woke up, had a fantastic dinner, took the dog for a walk, then dessert. I feel absolutely exhausted. Maybe watch a movie?
I remember one year on Thanksgiving, I felt so full and heavy after eating that I did one-meal-a-day for the next three days, and then finally felt normal. This is not that bad, but still.

Happiest Holidays to all. Though I don’t comment much, your voices, arguments, news aggregation and cracking wise helps keep me sane. Very grateful.
Josie (also)
Happy Holidays. When I was in second grade my mother showed inappropriate glee to have my Jewish best friend decorate our Christmas tree. Still do not get it. It did make an impression on me.
Suzanne
I will note that Spawn the Youngest got a Furby for Christmas. It is alternately hilarious and scary.
HEY FURBY, DANCE PARTY has already become a thing we say in this house.

Seasons greetings everyone.
Seasonal music from Allan Sherman: “The 12 Gifts of Christmas”, on the Andy Griffith Show.
And of course from Stan Freberg: : “Green Chri$tma$”.

@Geminid:
It hasn’t been so bad, aside from the fact that I’ve had a sinus infection for a little over a week, so that put a damper on things. I’m on prednisone and doxycycline now since Sunday. Feeling a bit better now. The worst I felt was last Tuesday, Wednesday, and part of Thursday. I was running a low-grade fever for several of those days, with it reaching 101.5 °F Weds night. Tylenol helped.

Happy Hanukkah to the other Heebs around here. I’m about to head out to pick up our Chinese takeout, and Partner and I finally decided on Charade for our movie. Hope everyone is having a good holiday, whichever you’re observing.

Josie, I grew up in eastern Nebraska, where a lot of Polish Jews, who had survived the camps, settled. Many of my schoolmates had moms and dads with tattoos on their arms. One Jewish friend celebrated the solstice by decorating the family’s Hanukkah Bush.
lashonharangue
@KatKapCC: Chinese take out on Christmas. Good to see some traditions are being maintained. ;)
UncleEbeneezer
@KatKapCC: Happy Hanukkah to you and your family. I’ve been enjoying the great online debate over latke toppings on social media. It appears as contentious (but also fun) as the “sugar on grits?” debate in the Black Community.

We got to Asheville late in the afternoon, everything was fine and the new baby was great so there was that. We’re going to check the damage to the arts district in the morning, gumbo lunch and back home.
Mr. Bemused Senior
I never would have guessed “ketchup.”
[ ETA shudder ]
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@H.E.Wolf:
You too!
Suzanne
@Mr. Bemused Senior: We are really bad mainline Christians, but my grandmother used to make latkes every once in a while. We did applesauce on top, because our Jewish neighbors did it that way.
Ketchup?!?! What kind of Walmart crap is that?!?!
Mr. Bemused Senior
@Suzanne: my stepfather was the chef and both applesauce and sour cream were provided (and approved 😁)
Denali5
@Raven:
We love Asheville and are thinking about a visit there in the Spring- but are heartbroken over the storm damage in western North Carolina. I don’t want to end up totally depressed- but Spring in the Smokies is lovely so there is that.

Since the discussion has turned to cooking and Chinese food I’d like to announce that someone here just received a giant 14 inch stainless steel stir-fry pan and a case of his favorite sauce which is no longer available at the local Safeway. I’m going to give that bad boy one heck of a workout this weekend.
Merry Christmas to everyone! Currently enjoying some nice Christmas jazz and brandy.

Get well soon!
I’m clocking out for the night, in order to watch the Muppet Christmas Carol for the first time ever. Bless y’all, every one.

Pre-food processor latke fixings traditionally contained a droplet or two of grandma knuckle blood.

@Denali5: Yea, her sis lives in west Asheville and niece and nephew in Black Mountain (near Warren Wilson) but there is some normalcy. I’ll report more tomorrow.

We did our Christmas Chinese meal in the restaurant for a late lunch. Light dinner at home of latkes, obviously.
Tomorrow night we have guests, an old friend who is falling into dementia at a good clip, her daughter, and her sister and BIL. The sister comes in every month to steer Friend’s dementia journey and over the last few months we’ve gone from acquaintances to friends.
SpaceUnit
@eclare:
Yeah. I could eat stir-fry every night. I’m really not the world’s greatest cook, but it’s so easy to make and so hard to screw up. And there’s so many possible combinations of meats and veggies, rice or lo mein noodles.
Ohio Mom
@Josie (also): As a Jew who has occasionally helped decorate friends’ Christmas trees, I don’t get the glee either.
In my experience there has been mostly appreciation that someone else was doing the work that had long ago lost its luster.
Demented Friend’s late mother was thrilled to give the work of spreading the outside lights over the shrubbery to Ohio Dad. It didn’t take Ohio Dad more than a few minutes to realize this wasn’t an honor but a sweat-inducing chore.

Holiday travels today, the wife chooses the Sirius, and TWICE in 7 hours I am attacked by “Fairytale of New York”. I love the song forever, but with both of them gone now, it’s a hard listen. Y’know? Still, I stuck it out. So we get home, I’m taking the dog out, and the perfectly random program I choose tries to kill me a THIRD TIME! No no no, it’s over to Liquid Metal. Enough already. Malcolm Xmas, one and all.

@KatKapCC: Since we won’t be having Christmas dinner until my older son gets here on Sunday, we celebrated with your traditions by getting Chinese takeout. They have a sign on the door “Open Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s”
KatKapCC
@lashonharangue: Every year! :)
@UncleEbeneezer: I’m pretty basic — I prefer a little applesauce. Although last year my friend made them with this honey-yogurt blend with pomegranate seeds and that was delicious.
KatKapCC
@SpaceUnit: It’s also an easy thing to do vegetarian. Firm tofu and veggies with some black bean sauce — yum.

@SpaceUnit: so many excuses to add extra ginger into everything, too.
I love stir fry. The famed use-what- you -have creative recipe…

@Gloria DryGarden:
Yeah, I like to get a piece of ginger root and dash off a bit into the pan with a cheese grater while the sesame oil heats up.

Yesterday it looked like today would suck. Our boiler motherboard blew a fuse so we had no heat, and were expecting all the stepkids and a grandchild. Argh. Our heating delivered two (not three) tiny space-heaters. They wete actually impressive little things. Many good newfangled safety features. Could not actually heat the house but kept it in an acceptable range.
Today was so much fun. Food was two orders from local grocery: one tray tiny slider deli sandwiches, second order was meat and cheese to build our own sandwiches.
I chopped up some romaine lettuce and sliced some tomatoes as garnish, and added a couple of packages of tortillas for those who prefer wraps to sliders.
Also spent all morning baking pies while cats whined (actually meowed, they were not happy.)
Rest of the day was great if you were not a cat. Did see Solly as he fled .
People had an amazing day. My stupid deli food and two pies could be constructed into food but every human had fun, the dog got all the leftovers, and the cats didn’t complain too much, or seem upset afterwards.
Cats are pretending today was as always okay. Little liars. Tonight will be cold and nobody has said otherwise. Boiler out, space-heaters cranking away but so small. We are unplugging them after dark.
Echo keeps pleading ” I need food”, yet she hss more food than anyone. Maybe she is pleading for something else? She is fed and watered, but she keeps jumping on me all night every night.We can easily keep her warm. She has other is issues
ETA Multiple humans in a house generate a lot of heat. Kids complained that our warnings made them overdress (such anguish). The cats and we were thrilled or at least relieved.

The kitten who is now ten (!!!) is sound asleep beside me curled in a little ball for warmth, with his tiny pink ears up and his face buried in his fur.
He used to be Demon Dobby.
