Supreme Court denies Trump’s request to block his hush money sentencing Friday
The U.S. Supreme Court has narrowly denied Donald Trump’s request to delay his criminal hush money sentencing, Friday in New York.
Trump’s last hope to halt Friday’s sentencing in his New York criminal hush money case had rested with U.S. Supreme Court, after the New York Court of Appeals, the highest court in the state, on Thursday denied his request to block the sentencing.
Trump on Wednesday launched an eleventh-hour request to New York’s highest court to pause the hush money case, on the same day that he also asked the U.S. Supreme Court to block his sentencing.
In a brief filed to the Supreme Court late Thursday, Trump’s lawyers reiterated their position that Trump is entitled to immunity as president-elect.
You get three guesses as to who the 4 justices are, and the first two don’t count.
I predict a tantrum from the soon to be president, and I don’t care. I would not mind seeing someone punch any of Trump’s attorneys in their smug little faces.
KatKapCC
I knew without a doubt Thomas and Alito would be on his side, and probably Kavanaugh. Guess I thought maybe Gorsuch had a shred of sense in him that he doesn’t. But still, glad that two of the wingnuts decided not to completely suck today.

As for celebrating victories, it’s my firm belief that if we would be unhappy, upset, or outraged if something went the other way away, that we need to be equally relieved and jubilant if that thing goes our way.
Otherwise, we are just setting ourselves up for apathy and despair.

@Baud: YES, love the title, WG!
And good to have a bit of good news.

Seconded. I’ve seen that happen so often. It’s an awful way to be.

Please excuse me while i go make a post with that title and schedule it for sometime tomorrow morning. :-)

Don’t Roberts and Barrett remember that they granted the President the right to have his enemies assassinated?

WaterGirl
@David T Rickard:
They may come to regret that decision.
But what this court giveth, it can also take away. I mean, once you don’t need standing to get a case before the Supreme Court, they can take anything up any time they want.
cmorenc
My guess who the two RW justices who voted against staying the sentencing:
– Barrett
– Roberts, because as indicated by his admonition to Trump against defiance of court orders might, just might, be having a few second thoughts about the amount of leeway and support their pre-elections gave to Trump. Like the big corporate business community Roberts is largely in tune with, he didn’t believe Trump would really be as crazy and unhinged as he is turning out to be . Roberts is a Federalist RW ideologue, not MAGA, and while both are repulsive to progressives, they are not the same.

Roberts knows a red hot potato when he sees it.

Nuthin’ happy about it. It’s a somber happening, one we can rightly appreciate and applaud as an application of justice but not dance for joy over.

@sixthdoctor: No, really. Donald Trump knew he was on trial while he was running for president. If he can’t do the job of president because of his 34 felony convictions, he can resign.
Yeah, I know, I know. But seriously, sometimes I have to point these things out because after a certain point, going “LOL nothing matters” is a form of obeying in advance.
scav
@cmorenc: Roberts keeping his powder dry for the real wing-dings coming down the pipes — and His Once and Future Orangeness having to cope with being a lame duck and expendable even before he takes office. Sounds entirely plausible.

I think I want to share a nightmare that’s at least adjacent to this thread in the hopes it can be dismissed.
In that nightmare, Trump decided that to win more of his cases he will expand the supreme court. 11 seats, maybe 13. Doesn’t matter, it’s only necessary enough are added that it makes the occasional objections of Roberts, Barret, and Kavenaugh (2 of three at a time) immaterial.
Geminid
@TBone: Rudy needs to hire George Santos to protect him. Those Persians know they can’t get past Santos. They’ve tried before and failed.

This would actually have been a big deal as a legal matter had Trump gotten his way.
To the extent we still have a federal system, a state court sits as the highest and best authority as to that state’s law. Trump’s criminal conviction was matter of state law. If a Federal court — any Federal court — was in position to overrule state criminal law, every single criminal case could be appealed into the Federal system — and if it could be, it would be.

Is it too late for Biden to have him arrested and imprisoned as a national security threat – high crimes and misdemeanors? I understand that Gitmo is still operational. Or, as I’ve said before, turn Mar a Lago into the official presidential penitentiary.
You know, as an official Constitutional act?

So here is where I am. I am so tired. I am a single person who lives in NYC. I have paid soooo much in taxes. And that’s OK. I truly believe that I should pay for those who can’t. But guess what?? I am done, cuz those idiots don’t get it. I am thinking about becoming one of those assholes who doesn’t know who their Congressional representative is.
I am 62 years old. I have only so may years left on earth. I just don’t want any more stress

Sister Golden Bear
@Old School: I’ll note that the whole “trans people aren’t real, they’re mentally ill confused normal* people” is a major justification for denying trans people healthcare and legal rights, and forcing trans kids into conversion therapy.
It’ll also be justification for disabusing us of our “delusions” by force, including confining us to mental hospitals for our own good, as well as prohibiting any mention that we exist.
And why yes, any resemblance to the sorts of things Anita Bryant advocated doing to gays is entirely intentional. LGB folks will be next, they’ve openly talked about it.
*Because the haters absolutely won’t use cis people.
Sister Golden Bear
@Sister Golden Bear: Also too, I’ll note that the UK TERFs have also moved into gender policing any woman who doesn’t fit their cramped ideas about what True Womanhood ™ should look like. The vast majority of women who’ve been confronted about being in the “wrong bathroom” were/are cisgender women.

@HeleninEire: I feel ya. The current thing that’s making me want to put my head on my desk is any mention of an election coming up, in which I’ll be asked to donate, write postcards, pay attention.
Yes, Virginia, I’m looking at you. I’m glad the voters there showed up to make sure their legislature didn’t go bad. I want Spanberger to become their governor.
But I can’t do the election-enthusiasm thing again right now. If there was voting to do in my state, I’d find the juice for it, I know — but there isn’t, and like you, I’m fucking tired.
I don’t want to watch the thug act like the thug he is and be proud of it. I don’t want to watch the courts and the voters shrug it all off.
And I really don’t want to watch them gloat, which is what he was doing today in the National Cathedral. It’s nauseating.

I mean sure they might like to but he’s down to one and done (which I don’t expect to see him get to the end of, btw)

He was convicted but walks with no punishment. Proof again there are two systems of Justice. Had I been convicted of 1 or 2 felonies, I’d be in jail; when you are rich and powerful you can get away with anything with no consequences. The judge was a coward who just fucked Lady Justice. Fuck him and the horse he rode in on.
