Trickster God willing, we shall dance on his grave.
one reason why Hitler needed it to be a Thousand Year Reich was to create the illusion of that credibility both internally and externally. You will notice that it lasted a somewhat shorter time.

this is one reason I think we shouldn’t take hints at a Trump Third Term or whatever very seriously- he has lots of incentive now to suggest he might do in future the thing he can’t do, physically or legally or electorally, because otherwise people will just wait him out
— post malone ergo propter malone (@proptermalone.bsky.social) January 18, 2025 at 11:38 AM
he's at like 44% approval rn and i agree that this is plausibly the top

Something adorable. Today, instead of thinking about our Giant Orange Carbuncle, think of this Japanese sunfish who just loves his people so much.
And, uh, happy birthday, Martin. We’ll try harder next year.

Weird day here. Current temp is 19. That is really cold for Memphis.

While YMMV, always provides a mood boost for yours truly.

@bbleh: I particularly got a kick out of Krugman’s reaction to being informed of it: “I’ve never actually seen the resemblance.”

I just read the most Orwellian thing over at Bari Weiss’s neo-reactionary Free Press site. (Not intentionally torturing myself — I ended up there after falling down a Bluesky rabbit hole.)
Emily Yoffe (another neo-reactionary, I guess) has an “exclusive” about an anti-trans EO Trump intends to sign today called “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.”
Yoffe interviewed “an incoming senior administration official” about why this is a day one priority. Lots of lies in response, as expected. But the Orwellian bit is at the conclusion of the EO text itself:
So the most prolific liar to ever take control of the federal government—a man whose political rise was predicated not just on lies but on undermining the idea of objective reality itself—is concerned about the government’s credibility and the people’s trust. Okay then.
The document ignores the existence of trans men, as the right-wing discourse always does. It condescendingly frames the persecution of trans people as “protection” for women. (Because the notorious sex pest is all about protecting the ladies, whether they like it or not.)
Ugh. This is probably a good day for an Ina Garten cooking show marathon.

I was in line at the pharmacy yesterday behind possibly the most unpleasant person on earth. Or at least in my ZIP code.
He was a large, bearded, 40-something white man who was picking up medication to treat high blood pressure. I know this because he loudly berated the poor clerk for an increase in his copay, which was the fault of his insurance company, not Walgreens. (I was tempted to say “Trump did that,” but he was a nasty, abusive asshole and possibly armed, so I kept quiet.)
When the clerk rang his purchases up, she said, “the screen is going to ask you if you want to make a donation to the California fire relief fund.” Instead of just pushing the “no” button on the screen like a normal person who didn’t want to donate, he yelled “No! Let ‘em burn!”
Jesus, what a prick. The good news is he’s already hypertensive in his 40s, so with any luck, the bastard will stroke out or drop dead of a massive heart attack soon, improving the lives of everyone in his orbit.

So the biggest threat to US democracy, as we’ve been told repeatedly, is taking office today and the current President will be having tea with it, riding in the limo with it, and leaving it a letter to, I guess, ask it to play nice.

You either mean it or you don’t. If you don’t act it…

We don’t mean it. You’re free to stop caring.

CNN and the NYTimes are triumphant. They’re as giddy as the day the US invaded Iraq. They’ll absolutely love the immigrant round ups. Trump and ICE will make it a spectacle for the news media, I’m sure, with humiliating and dehumanizing brutality performances. They love an authoritarian leader who punches down.
Baud
@Kay:
It’s good TV. We can’t produce that kind of content for them.
Kay
@Baud:
Trump’s army of federal police with their phony “warrants” and the journalists who love them, raiding minority neighborhoods in Chicago. Its probably better tv than dropping bombs on Iraqi civilians, in terms of entertainment value. Maybe they can get some of their lost revenue back. Their relationship with Trump has always benefited them as much as it does him. They’re fake adversaries.

Oh, good. Glad you’re ready. I think the opposition is going to be better than the resistance was. There’s a lot more clarity of purpose with all the billionaires lined up behind Trump and this wacky media cheerleading.

Stayed up late again, I’ll trying to get to sleep soon. But I just realized what today is, and started crying.
I thought I was gonna do rage, but it’s more like a damp cold beginning to a horror movie. I feel like I’m walking through a dark doorway, into an unlit cellar, and it’s just grim, utterly unseeable.

Hey, I got a little suggestion here: maybe, if there ever is another presidential election, how about if we don’t spend the entire summer demotivating our voters by telling them the enemy is right and our candidate is a doddering old fool who can’t win until they just give up in despair and stay home?

President Joe Biden on Monday issued preemptive pardons to potential targets of the incoming Trump administration, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired Gen. Mark Milley and lawmakers who served on the House Jan. 6 Committee.
“Our nation relies on dedicated, selfless public servants every day. They are the lifeblood of our democracy,” Biden said in a statement just hours before President-elect Donald Trump is sworn into office.
“Yet alarmingly, public servants have been subjected to ongoing threats and intimidation for faithfully discharging their duties,” Biden added.

So Trump’s Trans EO is first in line? Yea but that line is 100 long supposably. It’s the over-reach that will bring Democrats back into the majority again. Just like Trump’s last term. It’s pretty clear to me, Trump and Republicans aren’t going to stop at Trans folk. They’re going to go after all gay people, and this Supreme Court will strike down gay marriage, making it illegal again. I can’t believe Peter Theil didn’t think this many steps ahead.
