Today’s the day. In preparation, Biden has issued a number of preemptive pardons:
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Monday pardoned Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired Gen. Mark Milley and members of the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, in an extraordinary use of the powers of the presidency in his final hours to guard against potential “revenge” by the incoming Trump administration.
The decision by Biden comes after Donald Trump warned of an enemies list filled with those who have crossed him politically or sought to hold him accountable for his attempt to overturn his 2020 election loss and his role in the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump has selected Cabinet nominees who backed his election lies and who have pledged to punish those involved in efforts to investigate him.
“The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that any individual engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense,” Biden said in a statement. “Our nation owes these public servants a debt of gratitude for their tireless commitment to our country.”
Good.
Now to the infighting that will characterize the Trump administration. Vivek Ramaswamy is out at DOGE and signaling a run for Ohio Governor. LOL at that last bit. Steve Bannon says he wants state AGs to use the (execrable) Laken Riley Act to sue to block H1-B visas. That’s a shot across Elon’s bow, since he loves his H1-B employees and has a lot of operations in Texas, where Ken Paxton would I’m sure love to file yet another performative lawsuit.
In other news, not only did Trump move the inauguration indoors, he also had the Jumbotrons in the National Mall taken down, so any of his supporters who travelled to DC to watch the inaugural will do so from their hotel rooms or at the hotel bar. The mistreatment of the rubes who bought his snake oil starts now.
Anne Laurie posted that remix of “Everybody Wants to Rule The World” in Latin below, and it’s a worthy contender for the theme song of the Trump Administration, but given the number of whiny-ass broligarchs in his orbit (“Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, as well as Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos” went to church with the Trumps this morning), I nominate this song:

Vivek’s screed about Americans being lazy and how we should celebrate nerds instead of jocks…. man, he really took a shit on his career. I don’t know that he’ll ever come back from it. Kind of impressive.

I saw a post elsewhere about the jumbotrons but wasn’t clear if it was true or not. Is it also because of the “cold?” (Where I live it’s minus 14 right now, and that’s temperature, not wind chill, so 20-degree weather sounds like shirtsleeves to me.)

Al Roker on NBC is low-level trolling the Orange Snow Miser by listing recent outdoor inaugurations with colder weather and emphasizing the lovely clearly blue skies and 30 degree weather on the Mall today.
Also, wouldn’t traveling all the way to Washington to attend the inauguration – and then being locked out of the ceremony at the last minute – be a more compelling reason to storm the Capitol than in 2021? Just sayin’ ….

The 1993 event, we were returning from my college day visit so that was a fun drive. 2 1/2 hours for what was normally a 90 min trip.

Trump looks weak to me. I don’t think he will last long. I think he too will be muscled out, one way or another. I keep telling people who worry about civil war that I think there may be one, but we won’t be one of the players. It will be right-on-right violence. One thing I can’t stop wondering about is what approach they will take to ensure 2026 goes their way. Maybe they don’t need to do anything, maybe it’s already in the bag. But I don’t think so.

@Lily: Hopefully no MAGS state AGs like the evil Ken Paxon will get the notion to try and cook up state-level charged against Faucci, on the basis of alleged effects of his actions within their states. Even though such efforts will likely fail even with the current hacks on SCOTUS, it could still be costly aggravation to get to that end.
zhena gogolia
@TBone: I’ll confess I said I was triggered by discussions of Melania’s hat. First of all, when one of my students says they’re “triggered,” my reaction is not to laugh at them. It is a real thing.
Second, obviously I didn’t mean that I can’t face Melania’s hat. We were asking not to be subjected to a blow-by-blow fashion show of this horrific and tragic occasion. But our fellow commenter decided that laughing at us for our grief was the right way to go. Pretty MAGA-ish behavior, IMO.

Part of the strategy of burying the scandal that erupted with the Keown’s and overcharging foreign students for their tuition as well as all the donated money for the chapel that ‘disappeared’ over the years.
Previous graduates were able to get replacement diplomas with the new name
ETA: Absolutely about the changes. When I was there, it was us, the hospital, and the little redneck store down the road where we could get sodas & junk food and the nice lady would cash our checks. We’d have been in hog heaven to have even one of the fast food places that’s nearby now.

Edit: I know the redneck store! We used to go there for penny candy. Yeah, Trident Hospital is still there. I’d gone there a few times for some stuff, but if you haven’t been back in the past 5 years… that road expanded into a 4-6 lane monster, both sides of I-26 have been developed into monstrosities… that entire area is just unrecognizable to me. I say the same about Summerville. We were stationed at Shaw for 7 1/2 years, so we knew a good bit about the Midlands, but I’m sure it’s changed a good bit since were last there in 2011.

@TBone: Yeah, what about Mark Meadows? There’s a story there. I can only guess what it is, but the last line could be: “Meadows’ lawyer earned his pay.”
@Juju: Meadows may still be kicking himself for giving up a safe Congressional seat to go work for Trump. If Meadows hadn’t, he’d have likely won the Senate seat Ted Budd holds now.

@The Thin Black Duke: They’re having a hell of a time even getting a Moon landing program together, mostly because the idea is to do it on the cheap without Apollo levels of insane Cold War-motivated funding, and partly because of compounded bad decisions because eyes aren’t primarily on the prize.
There are ways to get a scientific expedition to Mars but it’s fantastically more difficult and expensive than any politician ever tends to imagine, and we have a decent scientific program going there without astronauts (though I suppose the dream of eventual human exploration is part of the motivation). And Musk’s dream of a self-sustaining colony is bullshit.

It was the content of those comments and how jarring it was to read ongoing inauguration liveblogging first thing in the morning. But do feel free to belittle other people’s feelings, if that’s what gives you a boost.
To expand, since you mentioned your anger over aspects of BJ in a separate comment, it’s clear that your feelings matter and should be honored–a proposition I agree with!–however, your behavior towards me and others shows that you believe that it’s fine to disregard and mock other people’s feelings–obvsly not a proposition I agree with. YMMV.

They are sort of substantial though. When he called their PM and threatened her she called an emergency meeting with her larger neighbors.
The kind of uncaring obtuseness that would lead Americans to think this is funny blows me away. Being threatened isn’t funny. These are real sovereign countries with real people. They’re not Americans. They don’t want to be Americans. They don’t want to suffer for our mistakes and stupidity.

There was this horrible cheesy 80s movie that featured an American and French actress that caught my attention in the day because, hormones. Yeah, let’s not get carried away. Biden overall has been a very good President who has made some serious blunders along the way. His greeting to the convicted felon isn’t high up on that list.
It’s just the asymmetry of Biden’s grace to Trump’s crassness that irritates me.

@raven: good.
stinger
@Quinerly:
Maybe because he’s gracious? He’s been drawing on deep reserves of graciousness ever since July. That might not have been what I’d have said, in his position, but it seems odd to me to have him criticized as “disgusting” for being gracious.
Quinerly
@John S.:
Not terribly high on my list either.

@stinger:
Appreciate your comment.
Lots of ways to be gracious, though. Yes, I find Biden’s “welcome home” disgusting. That’s me. Not going to change my feelings about this. I can accept others might not feel as strongly. My rose colored glasses have been off where Biden is concerned since June.
He’s done a lot of great things for the country. Unfortunately, there have been some heartbreaking mistakes, blunders, and horrendous judgment calls. And, I’m old…I have supported him since 1988.

@O. Felix Culpa:
Honestly, I don’t know what the “rules” are here anymore. Old thread some of you were upset about a hat being mentioned and didn’t want any info discussed about the morning inauguration.
Now you want info about the morning?
Think by now you have figured out Biden’s jarring greeting to the Fascist.
O. Felix Culpa
@Quinerly: You continued posting about the inauguration and related events, so let’s not pretend you’re concerned about other people’s feelings. I assumed “the greeting” was something inauguration-related, and it is perfectly legit to give an honest answer to an open question. But passive-aggressive and victim-posturing seems to be the order of the day. Take care. It’s a rough time for all

Quinerly
@O. Felix Culpa:
This has gotten rather ridiculous and weird. I posted a few tidbits about the AM, including how nice it was to see Bill hugging Hillary and how beautiful her green scarf was. I wasn’t live blogging as you said I was. You might want to note that I wasn’t the only one watching and commenting.
And, yes, I posted a few other tidbits…Trump’s speech was a low energy, campaign speech after you said you pretty much couldn’t stand to read anything about the inauguration (on a political blog of all places) and were leaving. I honestly thought you were gone. But, just like that you are back and subjecting yourself to my comments.
Lots of whining here. Same few nyms. I may be a bitch and an asshole (called the latter just today here). One thing I’m not is a whiner. I have never had the luxury of being easily triggered by hats, scarves, coats, and greetings.
Seems to me if folks want a total black out on the news of the day, including Melania’s hat, they should listen to a book on tape, read a book, go to a movie, or listen to music. And, not whining on an obscure political blog.
Carry on.
Back to my chowder.
O. Felix Culpa
@Quinerly:
Good grief. I didn’t say I was leaving the blog forever. I left the thread, because it wasn’t a productive use of my time. You’ve attributed a great deal of things to me that I did not actually say. But as I said above, this is a rough time for all. Take care.

Speaking of hats, hat pin lengths were legislated by several states in the early 1900s. “Suffragettes were also divested of their hat pins in court in case the more militant of the group used them to attack the unwary male.” That nugget from a wonderful book on vintage jewelry my hubby got me.
