I’m probably going to write health policy pieces in the near future. But the first thing I’ve done on Day 2/1,461 is donate to Wikimedia Foundation, the group that runs Wikipedia.
Lots of things need to be done today, tomorrow, next month, next year, next mid term and the next four years. Maintaining our data, knowledge and memory infrastructure is part of that. A mediocre chain sub a month is a good opportunity cost to pay for that problem.

Hear! Hear! Please help support Wiki. For all of its faults, it is still a vital source of information.

Agree with how important it is to donate to keep Wikipedia independent and self-sufficient against any attempt by billionaires like Besos or Musk, or RW attacks to undermine it. I admit i am one of those who have been taking it for granted – too long, but no more.
Spanky
I donate monthly, I think through Paypal. What they really need is a lot of people giving a little every month.
RileysEnabler
Donated, thanks for the timely reminder!
RevRick
I tend to give in one huge annual chunk, so, yes Wiki, and ACLU, and Planned Parenthood, and NAACP, and Heifer Project, and Habitat for Humanity, and several other local and church related organizations. The way I look at it is while it will cut into my kids’ inheritance, I am trying to leave behind a better world for them.
KatKapCC
@RevRick: I’ll also add the Transgender Law Center and Lambda Legal, plus folks’ local abortion funds and food banks as good places to toss a few bucks when possible.

Good watch on birthright citizenship.

they don’t want to undermine it. they want to monetize it. they want the views of those millions of eyes every minute of every single day. they hate that it’s free and free from ads. it’s exactly what the internet was meant to be. monitored and contributions from volunteers who don’t care if their contribution draws the most hits – they care that the information accurate, reliable, up to date and free.

O/T Great news :D
This will eat into the FFOTUS’s pride! FAKE NEWS! 😂😂😂
Lyrebird
YES to supporting Wikimedia!
And if I get a better-paying job I want to send more to the BJ server fund.
Off topic: Does the honorable lawyer in KY who ran for an office still read or comment here? I just read a sad and also enraging story of medical foot-dragging that led to the in-hospital death of a regular DKos diarist . Many commenters are saying she has good reason to sue, and I thought I would try to connect the story with that KY lawyer.
For the rest of this week I will need to keep a brave face on for work reasons. Keeping the news OFF.
Hug your loved ones extra today!

Good reminder, thank you. I’ve given Wiki an annual donation for several years now, but a smaller, regular contribution seems more meaningful now. They end up actually netting more from me, and they can budget for it. I do rely on Wikipedia articles a lot, so I’m glad to toss them a little gratitude.

So, I read that FFOTUS pardoned the guy who ran Silk Road, the notorious drug dealing web site on the dark web. I wonder how much he was paid for that?
NotMax
FYI.

+1 I donated before the turn of the year.
Meanwhile, …
Oversight is where much of the action opposing Donnie in the House is going to be. Crockett is very, very good.
Best wishes,
Scott.

I donate to Wikipedia and the Internet Archive, and for news sources I donate to Mother Jones and ProPublica. Wikipedia has grown into what I think is a crucial and usually accurate source of information. Thanks for the reminder.
I donate to most things annually for the reason that I still keep my financial records in desktop Quicken, and it’s annoying to make entries 12 times a year for monthly donations. This will be my 37th year.

@KatKapCC: Our church provides significant funding to a local center which serves the LGBQT+ community.

@NotMax:
This just absolutely utterly breaks my heart — and simultaneously enrages me.
Problem is, there’s already so much he’s done, or said he’s going to do, that is simultaneously heartbreaking and enraging that I don’t think I have the bandwidth to deal with it.

@NotMax:
The article doesn’t say why they aren’t here already. You’d think they would have made sure to travel before 1/20.
KatKapCC
@RevRick: That’s awesome.
And just FYI I wasn’t saying you specifically should also donate to the orgs I listed. I meant that for anyone reading :)
Jackie
@NotMax: I really have a hard time believing ALL of the FFOTUS voters support this ungawdful decision.
But, I also believed Harris would be President.
BellyCat
Wiki is my one primary and largest annual donation also too.
Something about free access to (even if imperfect) information, globally, that I like to think might make a difference. Someday? (Besides, most of my former students know of no other source for citations. Ack!)

@SiubhanDuinne:
Hang in there Subaru!
Best wishes,

Great reminder. I gave to Wikipedia earlier this month. I also support ProPublica and the Texas Observer, but need to reup.

@SiubhanDuinne
Yup. Need to recalibrate the outrage meter to a logarithmic scale.

@dnfree: Second this. In addition to supporting Wikimedia, please consider giving to the Internet Archive, which is also fighting off talk of a hostile takeover. As a source of accurate and free knowledge the billionaire overlords are gunning for it too.
I’m so old I remember when we thought the internet would liberate us by allowing everyone access to free and accurate information.
Jane2
Thanks for the tip, David. I’ve redirected the money I would have spent on the Post.

I am on board although I have had issues for decades about Wikipedia’s sexism. Every sneeze from a techbro or gamer was supremely significant while huge chunks of the economy (women’s fashion history) was beneath their notice. That was because of how they accepted input. Very techbro.
But they have long since fixed that!
We need to save the current wikipedia instead of frowning at the old one.

@Another Scott:
I love that line, “Buckle Up, Buttercup.”
As an official old, I remember a song lyric “pucker up, Butercup.”
I like Rep. Crockett’s statement much more and I believe she means it.
