Here’s a shocker (not):
DOGE Staffer Resigns Over Racist Posts
Employee has links to a deleted social-media account that advocated for racism and eugenics
From that commie WSJ rag, no less. Per Ms. Long’s Bluesky account:
I linked DOGE staffer Marko Elez to a deleted X account that advocated repealing the Civil Rights Act, backed a “eugenic immigration policy,” and wrote, “You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity.”
More shit like this will come out. I’d bet the farm on it. This Musk kinderchud was the 25-year-old with direct access to the federal payment system, by the way.
The WSJ has been better than the NYT so far in Trump 2.0. Not a high bar to clear though.
SpaceUnit
Why the fuck would he resign?
TBone
@SpaceUnit: he was doxxed and outed to his own people (those he was hiding his ideology from so that the deleted account had to be “traced” to him).
Betty Cracker
@SpaceUnit: Sadly, that’s a great question.
Steve LaBonne
@SpaceUnit: Yeah, it’s actually possible to be too racist for Skum and Dump? I would never have thought so.
Gretchen
That’s probably what Musk liked about him. Turns out the reason Musk hated USAAID is because they helped undermine apartheid in South Africa, and he wants it back.
Can we get that guy arrested now that he’s not with his team?
Sister Golden Bear
A bit more detail via RollingStone, which appears to be referencing the WSJ story.
He also called to “normalize Indian hate.”
No wonder Musk hired him.

Izit possible we’ve finally seen an example of a post-Lee Atwater Ni*CLANG* moment?
Because despite all the racist elements we attribute to Edolph, Hair Furor and their ilk, they still don’t cross that boundary that Atwater laid out oh so long ago.
They walk right up to it, peer at the other side, but have still managed to not actually cross it.
Until some dumbass, young minion, who’s probably never heard of Lee Atwater, has?
eldorado
Apparently the reporter just started there (according to the Bluesky account)
sentient ai from the future
I’ve been thinking about how the transphobia intersects with the racism.
I think there is a lot of resentment internally about being pressured socially to hide their racism and misogyny, and seeing people who reject their values openly is just salt in that particular grievance.
It’s more than just the rejection of the norm for these people. It’s seeing people who reject those norms also unafraid to be themselves.

Sister Golden Bear
@Kay: And sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. Nancy Mace looked positively thrilled to screaming anti-trans slurs in a House committee hearing yesterday. Because nothing makes a Republican happier than being able to use a new slur in public.

They’re claiming that the Muskrats have security clearances, but if it only took a new reporter a couple of days to dig this up, there was no background check and hence no security clearance.

@Gretchen: Yeah I mean do believe AOC’s story that Mace told her everything is a game that sort of empty thrill seeking narcissist is not going to handle aging well.
I’m sure she is genuinely bigoted and don’t care performative bigotry for sef aggrandizement is no better or worse than deeply held bigotry and of course why not both but she is very much of the sort that has found “success” in our brave new world.
Also probably found the limit of that success hopefully she will implode well hopefully this entire rotten edifice will without taking everyone else with it.
Dave
@Sister Golden Bear: Fairly certain at least 90% of that is a desperate desire to put workers back fully under the boot versus any semi-rational justification.
Ohio Mom
@Gretchen: Clearance takes a while. They have to check on what you wrote down, and it’s pages of information they ask for.
I never had it, Ohio Dad did but he’s talking to his mom. Maybe someone else who has had it can correct me if I’m wrong.
Dave
@Ohio Mom: I wouldn’t be surprised when Internet shit posting meets real life it often leads to a somehow less classy version of “your one of the good ones”.
As for the clearances they played games with those in his first term so while what you write is true for the hoi poloi it does not currently hold for anyone who receives the writ of the leader.

@Ohio Mom: I’ve come across a couple Elez families over the year. They were of Croatian descent, it that’s Marko’s dating pool.

@Jeffro: I saw that Syrian Oresident Ahmed al-Sharaa gave an interview to The Economist that’s probably worth reading.
Some interesting biographical information is coming out about al-Sharaa. Prior generations of his family included members who held high posts in government during the 20th century.
Also, al-Sharaa has a wife who was photographed with him for the first time this weekend, when she accompanied her husband in his trip to Saudi Arabia. It turns out her family also has prior political connections.
Fun Ahmed al-Sharaa fact: he was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to Syrian parents. They moved back to Syria and he was raised in Damascus
Ed. Al-Sharaa’s meeting eith Saudi Vrown Crown Mohammed bin Salman provided an interesting counterpoint to the meeting a few days later between Israeli PM Netanyahu and US President Trump. Al-Sharaa and bin Salman are 43 and 39 years old respectively, while Netanyahu is 75 and Trump is 78.

White racists – Trump, Musk, Freedom Caucus – believe a la apartheid, Gaza, and southern segregation – that black and brown people can live anywhere. That they have no real “home” or ties to the land. They are fungible: put them anywhere and tell them to be happy. Whites, a la Steve Bannon on the other hand, are traumatized when a black family moves in a few blocks away. The racism of MAGA plays these themes to the hilt. “You and your white suburban, rural life and life-style are not safe.”

@Ohio Mom:
You have to fill out the Standard Form (SF) 86. Depending on how much you’ve moved around and how many trips you’ve made abroad, which have to be listed, can affect the time it takes to complete.
They check your finances, because a weak financial situation, like too many debts, makes someone vulnerable to foreign coercion.
They check your references, and can check with your employer to make sure you do not have any glaringly obvious problems.
They’ll do a criminal background investigation.
Depending on the level of clearance and what you’ve done in life, like travel abroad, the process can take a few weeks to months for most people or sometimes longer.
It’s not something that’s done in under one week.

This is not unusual in Silicon Valley, particularly amongst the libertarian set. I worked at a startup which is now a well known company where the founder hired one older guy who had gone to Club Fed for selling secrets to the Soviets (he worked for me and was actually a decent programmer and a nice enough guy) and another who similarly got an enforced vacation for taking over as supplier of LSD to the Grateful Dead when Owsley got pinched (he was one of the best programmers I ever worked with). This is sort of tangential and I hate to say this, but computer science has an enduring misogyny and racism problem, so I’m not surprised about Marko Elez. I majored in CS as an undergraduate and in graduate school and I’d hoped things would improve (I’ve sort of changed fields since I graduated).
Two years after I arrived in the US from Nigeria (early 1990s), I was writing code in a packed computer lab in Columbia’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences when one of my classmates, who was pre-med, started a rant about how whites and Asians (his best friend was Indian) were going to get together and eliminate black people through RAHOWA. It was the first time I’d heard about “racial holy war.”
I was very, very slow about picking up on racial issues when I first moved to the US, having never experienced racism in Nigeria. Common sense would have meant my running from the lab, but I just looked over at him, said a prayer under my breath for his future non-white patients and went back to coding. I was the only black person and the only woman in that lab on that day and the group that gathered when he started his rant dispersed when I had no visible reaction. He walked away and I avoided him and his friends for the rest of my time at Barnard (Barnard computer science majors back then had to take all their CS classes at Columbia’s School of Engineering). I didn’t tell anyone except my friends and I suppressed that memory until recently, when my 18-year-old cousin switched from majoring in computer science to electrical engineering because of a similar vibe in her CS classes (in California, not New York). Ugh.

@UncleEbeneezer: European Jews *were* colonizers of Palestine/Israel, regardless of whether their ancestors had lived there millenia ago or not. Specifically, they were following the patented European model of “settler-colonizers”, who make way for themselves by claiming that the land is “empty” and therefore ripe for their taking – actual indigenous population be damned.
Same as this country.

Personally, I don’t think anyone has an “ancestral claim” to land unless they can show chain of title. My sister and I are having a spat right now because (supposedly) our aunt told her that our late mother told our aunt that my late father told my mother that he wanted a second cousin to have right of first refusal on some farmland that my sister and I jointly inherited. I am unimpressed with this argument and even more so with the idea that Jews whose families have been part of the Diaspora for untold centuries are “entitled” to all of Israel up to its “Biblical borders.” Especially when the people pushing this are deranged Evangelicals who think that Israel expanding to the limits of those “Biblical borders” is a prerequisite for Jesus coming back and exterminating us all.

@Miss Bianca: You know damn well that when people hear the Indigenous/Colonizer terminology, they are not hearing what you just wrote. That sure as hell is not what is meant when someone uses “Colonizer” as a slur. It’s a bullshit move that drastically misrepresents the history and creates an Oppressor/Oppressed binary that is disingenuous. And that’s precisely why the Soviets first started introducing the phrase in the 1970’s and convinced Progressives around the world like Angela Davis and Jeremy Corbin to adopt it and make it part of Progressive dogma. It’s a phrase that gives an extremely misleading and simplistic impression. We would never in a million years call Navajo or any other NA tribe members “Colonizers” for using the govt of the US to do so or use that phrase to deny their indigenous status.

And that was enough to turn Robert E. Lee against slavery, and after getting elected President of the Confederacy, he successfully led the campaign to free the slaves! @Miss Bianca: I read there were 40,000 Jews living in the area in 1880 when it was under Ottoman rule, before Theodore Herzl announced his Zionist project. Back then Jerusalem’s small population was majority Jewish. Then, after 1948, over 500,000 “Mizrachi” Jews emigrated to Israel from Arab countries from Morocco to Iraq and everywhere in between. I think their descendents constitute a majority of Israel’s ~77% Jewish population now.
The funniest take I saw on the Azhkenazi population of Israel came from a Turkish guy. People were arguing about the origins of the Azkenazi Jews who settled in Israel during the 20th century. Some pushed a common belief that the Azhkenazi descended from a Khazar tribe that converted to Judaism around 800 CE.
The Turkish guy jumped in with: “Sure they descended from the Khazars. The Khazars were Turks! That’s why the Israelis are such good warriors.” This was a very Turkish thing to say
Ed. But anyway, I’m not sure why Americans complain about Israel being a colonial project. We’re part of the biggest and most successful colonial project in history.

Napoleon extended citizenship to Jews in the places he conquered, which often ended up enraging the local populations. It feels awkward to accuse a diaspora people of settler colonialism when Europeans told them again and again that they were foreign nationals (i.e.,”Israelites”) who lived in Europe only by the grace of the sovereign.

@Jay: Exactly. Thanks for filling in some of the details. For years, I thought the expression “that’s beyond the pale” came from the fact that Jews were told not to tread beyond the Pale of Settlement where they were allowed to reside. Years later I learned that “pale” derived from a Scottish word for fence pole marking a boundary.
In the words of the great Emily Litella, “Never mind.”

Since this is an open thread…
I just got off a two-hour Zoom meeting led by Rev. Brooks Berndt, UCC Environmental Justice Minister, and with six laypeople talking about developing a Climate Hope Affiliate team in the PA-7 Congressional District. The aim is to build a team of 20+ people who will engage in an intentional, continuous media campaign and engagement with our Representatives and Senators. The goal is to defend the Climate Change components of the Inflation Reduction Act in order to keep us on track to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030.
We began by talking about our “why”, about our deep concerns and motivations, moved to an outline of what an affiliate will look like and the nature of the ask. The group will meet in two weeks to discuss our progress. Those who joined the Zoom call were asked to give a number of people they would invite to join, and it’s a big, but noble ask:
1). An initial two and half hour meeting to lay out the purpose and objectives;
2). Followed by four weekly /biweekly training sessions of one and a half hour each;
3).Followed by two monthly meetings, one a webinar and the other where the group meets to strategize, organize, and debrief.
The participants made commitments to invite a total of 25 more people to attend the initial meeting and become a part of the effort.

@Geminid:
Legal Jewish immigration to British Palestine was strictly limited from 1930 to 1948 and was severely reduced in 1939,however, every year illegal Jewish immigration exceeded legal limits.
Despite a high Muslim, Christian and Druse birthrate, by 1948 the Jewish population of Palestine had climbed to over 700,000 “legal” immigrants.
Adding to the conflict, many Jewish immigrants received title to land by buying title from former Ottoman absentee landlords, in some cases, the landlords had not been on their property or collected rent in 1500 years, British Courts accepted this, despite there being Bedouin, Druse, Christian and Muslim villages and farms on the land and had been for hundreds of years.
Professor Bigfoot
@Jay: Neither the Irish nor the Italians were “white” in their respective immigrant waves.
They BECAME white by adopting anti-Blackness.
This is why we have the stereotypes of the “beefy Irish beat cop” and the “wily Italian detective.”
American police culture was born in antebellum slave patrols and is carried in police union halls (no coincidence that FOP was Trump’s first major endorsement) today.
It’s the reason why they are the two “white” ethnicities most hostile to Black people.

The Bedouin are not, but many volunteer, and there has been a Bedouin regiment serving in the Negev desert since the 1950s.

Professor Bigfoot
@Bupalos: I really shouldn’t hit the toggle button on your comments, but, sincerely, *fuck you.
Miss Bianca
@UncleEbeneezer: da fuq?
Miss Bianca
@Professor Bigfoot: Have you done any reading on the history of Israel? It’s not a simple matter of “returning to our homeland”, despite what Israelis might say. If you do do any reading about what the Zionists *did* to the Palestinians as they were forming Israel, the parallels to white people coming to this country are obvious.
Why the hell would you be comparing the Zionists to Native Americans? They were *European* Jews following a *European* model of takeover. Just because they were oppressed in Europe doesn’t mean they didn’t take on an oppressor role themselves, and that is the uncomfortable truth that a lot of people – myself included – don’t always want to face.
Do you not think razing villages and killing people and taking their land counts as “colonization”? Because that is, in fact, what happened. Who the fuck cares if “their ancestors” are buried there from 3,000 years ago? The only people who could claim any real kinship to those old bones are the Jews who were actually living in Palestine all along. Yeah, there were some, and they were living there peacefully with their Muslim and Christian neighbors when a bunch of European invaders showed up *and took over*.
It would have been one thing if the Zionists had just moved in and settled among the population already there. But that is not what actually happened. You think this Gaza thing just came out of nowhere? Shit, the Israelis have been trying to wipe the Palestinians off the land there for *over 100 years*, ever since the Balfour Declaration.
Professor Bigfoot
@Miss Bianca: What about the Jews who went there after being put out of Egypt, Syria, and elsewhere?
Beyond that, were they full citizens in Europe? Or were they like Black people in America during Jim Crow– targets of murder and oppression wherever they went?
How many times did the Palestinians reject a two-state solution? More than once.
Israel has done some heinous shit, and I get that; but I don’t get the presumed innocence of all “Palestinians.”
And to be honest, the fact that the “pro-Palestinian activists” insulted the living fuck out of Black people and told us we needed to vote against our own best interests for the sake of the Palestinian people when the other side would obviously be worse, well, FUCK ‘EM.
Let their American** supporters take care of ’em.
Geminid
@Professor Bigfoot: Yeah, and plenty of Jews evaded the Romans and hid in the mountains and hills. They came back down and lived in communities including near the Sea of Galilee for centuries. Some set up in Jerusalem and ended up slaughterd by the Crusaders when they stormed the city. Later, the Ottoman Empire had tens of thousands of Jewish subjects living in the Levant.
And as you point out, a large number of Israeli families came from North Africa and countries like Iraq, Yemen and Syria. They had nothing to do with Europe. Israel is not so much a colonial state so much as a refugee state. People choose to ignore this.
