Joelle and I spent the day messing around the house because right now, the PGA’s Waste Management Phoenix Open is going on at TPD Scottsdale, which means that basically you do not want to leave your house unless you are walking in your neighborhood. For those of you who do not know, if you combined Fyre Fest, Woodstock 99, Happy Gilmour, and invited every single one of the worst frat bros and douchebag business guys along with every escort, stripper and instagram influencer girlie, but them all on a gold course, and encouraged them drinking to the point of near alcohol poisoning, you would have the Phoenix Open its current incarnation. You’ve got streakers, portions of the course turned into a beer/mud slide, dudes passing out standing up doing the booze version of the fenty fold, and worse.
We got some thai take out and are watching a little tv and going to go to bed early like proper olds.
Everything political sucks lets not talk about it in this thread.
Chetan Murthy
John, for reals, the PGA allowed _Waste Management_ to sponsor a golf tournament? What’ll they do next? Invite Mr. Bone Saw to sponsor ? [narrator: I’m being informed that, yes, Mr. Bone Saw is sponsoring the whole shebang]

Well, you might like the Signora Volpe series for some escapist viewing. 2 seasons on Acorn (via Prime). I don’t think I’ve seen Emilia Fox in anything since she was Georgiana Darcy in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice. Hoping for a season 3.

Anyone have Super Bowl parties planned? This household are rooting for the Eagles and sporting our Seahawks attire as representing the NL.
I read FFOTUS has hatred for the Philadelphia Birds – thus another reason to hope the Eagles can repeat their upset in ‘18 – denying Brady and NE another SB ring, and denying KC the Three-Peat.
Starfish (she/her)
@Aziz, light!: Wow. Is that New Orleans during Mardi Gras drunk or Boston on St. Patrick’s Day drunk? And which drunk is drunker?

@Jackie:
Hate to tell you, but 86% of Canadians support Canada having “technical difficulties” with the electricity supply and the gas supply to the US, starting at 6 am, EST. That will only effect 31 States.
Sadly, that will also effect the Puppy Bowl.
zhena gogolia
@satby: We love that. Also Nicholas Farrell in season 2.
Leto
@Jackie: it’s just Avalune and me at the casa. She’ll make her nachos that we love, and a few other snacks. GO BIRDS!
It’s currently sleeting here, and this entire upcoming week will be lots of snow and sleet. Should be fun…

I attended the Phoenix Open a couple of times. Not my scene.
One year, the Phoenix Open and the Super Bowl were both in Phoenix at the same time, and I did my level best not to leave the house.

@Starfish (she/her): yes.
Jackie
@Jay: I hope it’s an unfulfilled rumor! Maybe technical difficulties whenever the cameras zoom in on the FFOTUS???
🤞🏻🤞🏻 (sorry, JC)

@Jay: Wouldn’t be more efficient for Canada just to have “technical difficulties” for, say, the last five minutes of the game?

We have a bit of new snow with more forecasted for tomorrow. Perfect weather for chicken wings and 7-layer dip for The Game.
Jackie
@Chetan Murthy: First Felon. But I like your interpretation! Lol!

It will only effect 31 States.

It snowed up here in the mountians, so my buddy and I got a decently early start to our local hill (12 miles away). It was bonk-diddy-bonkers. It had only snowed 2″ in the previous 11 days, and this snow coming overnight on a Friday meant huge pent up demand matched to a Saturday in Denver.
Still, i won’t complain! Everyone was well behaved (some novices were dumb, but that’s not bad-intentioned), and goofing around on more than half a foot of powder was wonderful.

I made a pumpkin cake. Children interrupting me constantly while I mixed the ingredients. Baked it. Thought it looked a little bit lighter in color than the other times I’ve made it.
Realized…. I forgot to put the pumpkin in the batter. Fuuuuuuuuuck.

@Suzanne:
That’s okay, you still made a cake.

@Suzanne: which recipe did you use? I have a hankerin’ for pumpkin, and my goto is pumpkin bread (b/c I still haven’t buckled-down and learned how to make pie crusts).

Oh, and I would think I’ll either be watching a movie, more season 3 of British Bakeoff, or reading a novel tomorrow at game time. I just cannot be bothered, but any of you who enjoy should enjoy!
I went to most all of my college home games way back in the day, and later I gave it a go being a Vikings fan the first two years I lived in MN. It wasn’t really connected, but my interest waned about the time Qadry Ismail left the Vikes. Really never followed pro ball after that.

the only thing that would make me tune in to the SB would be the possibility of seeing the thug have a stroke on live tv … but it’s not guaranteed to happen, and if it does I’ll settle for the clips.

I am sitting here playing yarn chicken with this current knitting project. It’s a two-color shawl, and I may have to go tear out a different finished project to have enough yarn, as Knit Picks is not showing this yarn as available in the particular main color I am using. There are some for sale from people’s Ravelry stashes, but that depends on people actually replying to my messages…

@Chetan Murthy: I highly recommend pumpkin pie cake. The alternate name, pumpkin dump cake, could use some work, but it’s got the pumpkin custard of a pie, but with a cake-y, nutty crust. Incredibly easy since it uses a box cake mix but you don’t even mix it!
Our household loves it, and it went into rotation because I can easily source a GF cake mix as an alternative. There are GF pie crusts, of course, but we now prefer the pie-cake (and we also get Costco pumpkin pies in season, and he just skips the crust since he’s not deathly GF – and I admit to eating the crispy edge bit of the crust he has to reject. Oh, the sacrifice).

Might not watch the SB, unless one of my streaming services is carrying it. Will probably follow it online, at least sporadically. I was born in Philly, lived my first 12 years there, have visited a few times and quite like the city… so I have a vestigial fondness for the Eagles, and hope they win.
Today I finally got to the park to do this month’s water quality testing of the main creek that runs through the park. I should have done it at some point this past week, but the weather was very uncooperative. Today was at least dry, so off I went. I got to chat with a few people who happened by to ask what I was doing, which was great fun. It also meant I was out there for 2 hours rather than 1 hour, and by the time I ran the last test, my hands and feet were freezing.
Jay
@CaseyL:
Tip, Neoprene.
I flyfish through the winter. 8 -10 hours immersed in freezing water. Often have to suck the frozen ice off my flyline before making another cast.

The good news is that I’ve tested negative for Covid the last four times so I should be over it but there’s the possibility of a rebound. A friend of mine set a course in San Francisco this morning to find the heart and sea lion sculptures that are scattered around the city. He got about sixty people to come out. The bad news is that walking 6.36km wore me out and I thought I was going to die going up the first hill. It’s going to take a while for me to recover from Covid; and I was just getting over my IT band syndrome in my leg. Getting old sucks.

@Jackie: when PHI beat NE 7 years ago they passed on going to the White House, a decision repeated by the US women after winning the soccer world cup a year after that. It would be fun to see the Eagles take the trophy and then tell fcukface to eat it, again.
CaseyL
@Jay: Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll try it, but most gloves don’t do much for me. About the only ones that keep my hands warm are fur-lined or insulated ski gloves – neither of which allow enough fine control.
Jay
@CaseyL:
So tip, surgical gloves under what ever works for you. Keeps the water away, minimal insulation though.
My go to’s when it’s not -40 are wool, fingerless gloves. Just shake the water off.
I’m tactile as well, don’t like gloves.
Then again, don’t like cordless torque tools, stripped out too many bolts into aluminum casings, even with the torque settings on the tool set “right” I go by feel.

@Jay & Casey L: Noticing that several jackals are fly fishers. I was just (literally 5 minutes ago) reading a book on Western Fly fishing by Bud Lilly and Paul Schullery from around 25 years ago. Some real optimism there about conservation. Schullery is still around and writing – his books on Yellowstone are really good. Especially the first one about when he lived there in the 70s. I was able to get autographed copies of several of his books at a fundraising auction recently. Was just thinking about writing to thank him.
I live in Nebraska and do fish most of the year. But right now things are frozen over in Nebraska. I did manage to fish in Northern Arizona on a work trip early in the year and that was fun. Hoping to get out around here later in the month, though things are getting colder for a bit.

Planning on the monthly shopping trip in town on Sunday. Expecting the stores to be uncommonly uncrowded.
Jay
@mvr:
I got bored with basic, standard BC Flyfishing a couple of years ago, started learning how to do Czech flyfishing. It’s basically upstream nymphing with a twist.
Here on the Coast, other than a couple of months, (spawning), you can flyfish year round in fresh water, (2 trout species, 3 char species, 4 salmon species, 2 steelhead), NPM’s, some Bass and Crappies,
and then, there is salt water. Blueback’s are a blast, (immature coho salmon,) inshore up to tuna offshore.

@Jay: I’m not jealous (sarcasm or at least irony). I lived in Oregon a long time ago which is where I took up fly fishing. But to be truthful it was a long time between my first two fish despite going out to the Clackamas & Sandy Rivers after work nearly daily.
Nowadays (40 years on) I mostly go to Wyoming (where I have built a tiny cabin) to the West, or to the Driftless area of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin to the East when I want to catch trout or char. But I’ve also learned to like catching (and releasing) small mouth bass around here. I’ve been pretty involved with fisheries related conservation and the new regime is depressing to say the least.
NotMax
@hitchhiker
Yeah, thought about suggesting Jell-O but that’s not something found in household pantries so much as it used to be.
Would have mentioned either rum or bourbon but for the kids.
Jay
@mvr:
Sorry to hear that.
I grew up flyfishing for brookies in the Maritimes. 122 brookies in two cast iron frypans, none bigger than 4 inches. Then, we moved to BC, first fish was a 22 inch Kamloops trout, (rainbow variant) from Peterhope lake on a half back nymph.
The salmon and steel head are hard done by here,.
The best local river fishing is the Upper Salish, which should be great when it opens, the 2022 floods destroyed the road in, and it has not been repaired yet, so when it opens, should be a bit epic.
When we lived at the place, it was a short walk to Edith Lake, I started out fishing from a boat, switched to a belly boat, then just fishing from shore, as I got to know the lake. 3 Kamloops trout subspecies, naturally spawning Brookies.
Always got fish.

@Jackie: Nope, not bothering with the Superb Owl. I hoped the Ravens would be in it but no. Then I thought if the Bills were in it vs. the Lions it would be interesting, but no. I have no interest in watching KC or Mahomes or any more commercials with Mahomes in them.
Bring on baseball. I’ll try to figure out how much $$ it will cost me to watch some O’s games. MLB doesn’t require them to have at least one station carry them over the air like NFL does. Who knew the NFL could do something right?

@Suzanne:Pumpkin cake with no pumpkin? Oops!!!
Was it brain fade? My favorite expression these days. Comes from auto racing, when brake fade would send a driver into the hay bales. Brakes were OK though? It was brain fade.
ArchTeryx
@frosty: Brake fade is also quite deadly. It killed Ken Miles, should-have-been winner of 24 Hours at LeMans, when he was testing a new Ford GT-series car. Brake fade hit, he lost control, and crashed full speed into a track barrier.

ArchTeryx
@NotMax: It sure got me used to Demerol, Fentanyl, Versed, and Propofol. I get scoped once a year and have since 2009. Before that, I got scoped about 20-25 (there were too many for an accurate count) times between the initial appearance of the Crohn’s and my eventual J-pouch surgery.
Yeah, I’ve had medical stuff stuck up my back door more than an entire nursing home full of old people. My only comfort is that I will never have to drink the purge prep again, though the Fleet Enemas I use to prepare the pouch are painful as hell – just shorter.
Can’t get colon cancer when you have no colon, and the pouch (which CAN get cancer) is a whole lot more accessable.
