Let’s check in on the DOGE website:
The doge.gov website that was spun up to track Elon Musk’s cuts to the federal government is insecure and pulls from a database that can be edited by anyone, according to two separate people who found the vulnerability and shared it with 404 Media. One coder added at least two database entries that are visible on the live site and say “this is a joke of a .gov site” and “THESE ‘EXPERTS’ LEFT THEIR DATABASE OPEN -roro.”
That seems bad. Wonder what else is going on at the DOGE website?
Elon Musk’s team at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency has posted classified information about the size and staff of a U.S. intelligence agency on its new website, raising bigger concerns about where Musk’s programmers got this information and what they are doing with it.
DOGE, which President Donald Trump created to purportedly root out waste in the federal government, launched its website on Wednesday night with a feature allowing users to “trace your tax dollars through the bureaucracy.” People can navigate through all federal agencies and offices for details about their head counts, budgets and average ages of employees.
That seems worse, but really, now that we have a Russian asset as the Director of National Intelligence, she can just give them all our government info. At least the American people can rest assured their data is safe:
The Internal Revenue Service has now joined the list of federal agencies and offices experiencing life on the “DOGE” side. Two sources told TPM that a staffer affiliated with President Trump and Elon Musk’s controversial “efficiency” initiative left some bewildered and concerned on Thursday as they held their first meeting at the Washington headquarters of the tax agency.
Reuters and other news outlets have reported on the IRS meeting and identified the DOGE staffer involved as Gavin Kliger. A Capitol Hill source who was briefed on the meeting confirmed to TPM that Kliger represented DOGE at the agency. According to the Hill source, who requested anonymity to discuss the meeting, Kliger explained that DOGE wants to get a deep look inside the IRS.
“Their interest was … really across the board, so it included the operation of enforcements, it included taxpayer service in terms of function and the personnel footprint, and they wanted extensive system access,” the Hill source said.
Fuck. They fuck around and screw up the filing and refunds, and a lot of people who voted for Trump and rely on a tac refund to make it through the next few months are going to lose their fucking minds.
WTFGhost
I’m just going to laugh myself silly if it’s a SQL injection attack.
It’s *trivial* to avoid SQL injection; you use parameters, and “smoke test” parameter patterns, something that’s easy to do in a…n SQL database. (Sorry: some national standards agency decided it’s “ess-cue-ell” and I learned it as “sequel”. I bet you didn’t know I was such a rebel, saying “A SQL” instead of “an sql”.)
The moron didn’t even know the government would use SQL databases, MySQL or PostgreSQL, or even Oracle or SQL Server. OF COURSE they would. ANY experience in real COMPUTER SCIENCE would tell you that!
Ohio Mom
I am out of sympathy for anyone who voted for this. I hope their identities get stolen. Some of them are probably due refunds, I hope theirs get lost.
If it takes all this and more for them to lose their minds, maybe that’s a necessary first step for them finding them.
As for me, I am spending the rest of my life checking to see if our identity has been stolen yet and our Social Security checks deposited. I really didn’t want another chore.

@Ebony: Agreed – but, specifically, an SQL injection, in particular, would be gloriously funny because anyone who actually studied computer science would quickly see the situations in which a structured database, with semi-deterministic retrieval times, would be *vastly* superior to NOSQL.
So you’d *expect* to find any specific major SQL flavor, and search for all places where software queried the database, to verify safety and security.
Y’all are right, my first thought isn’t firewalls and filters, but, in my defense, I only taught other people to use them – I didn’t go to all the trouble of doing them *myself*. So, I made sure the DB was *isolated*, or I told them “this is an *extreme* danger in production; no, I’m sorry, I don’t know your network, I can’t tell you how to set up security groups and ACLs; yes, I understand that you’re very upset, and probably about to start jumping up and down on your (SQUEE)… phone.”

@UncleEbeneezer: It was always blindingly obvious that Biden/Harris are much better than Trump, but part of why we are where we are is because Biden legitimized economic nationalism & PRC containment (& securitization of everything, in the sense that everything was/is viewed through the lens of natsec & Great Power Competition), continued pursuit of US primacy in an age of multipolarity, & continued the perverse way w/ which the US related to the ME (& the ROW outside of the West). Those are all policy choices, choices that reinforce the macro-environment friendly to the nativists & reactionaries.
Biden & Congressional Dems did not have to go down the path of economic nationalism. They did not have to continue the trade war that Trump started & escalated the tech. war that Trump started. Remember how the Dems criticized the Trump tariffs during the ’20 campaign? How many of the tariffs were rolled back.
By all means train the fires on the reactionaries waging the counterrevolution (& have been since the Gingrich era), but we want to break out of the cycles of Dems partially cleaning up after the mess caused by the reactionaries, only to have the reactionaries retake power & make worse messes, then our side have to make some serious changes.

@Shalimar: Ragip Soylu posted a funny German commercial along these lines. It starts with man with a leather bag standing in an airport boarding line. The man stands out among the Germans in the queue on account of his olive skin and neat beard. The lighting and tense music make me think I’m watching an espionage thriller.
As the man approaches the head of the line, a stern uniformed man eyes his leather bag, and then him. The tension builds as the the official runs the bag through the scanner. Then he opens it up!
After looking inside the inspector hands back the bag and the man walks down a hall to his plane. The next scene shows him driving up to a house in the Turkish countryside and being greeted by his wife and fwo daughters. They go inside and he puts the bag on the kitchen table and opens it. It’s full of chocolate bars because this is an Aldies commmercial.
Soylu commented about how he and other Turks have fond childhood memories of their ex-pat relatives bringing chocolate back from Germany.

@Kelly: They still think they’re engineers. Most CS grads these days know how to paste together Python libraries into somewhat usable code. When Josh Hawley was going off about banning open source, I remembered the good old days when I worked for three different Boston-area companies with a total of about 2500 programmers, whose sole products were proprietary compilers and operating system components. Those companies are pretty much gone, and the programmers mostly dead. The US software industry is now quite dependent on open source projects.
