    Remind everyone on NCIS message boards they just “fired” Kate, or McGee, or any other probie they’ve enjoyed, not because they were sure they needed to… just because they were sure they could replace them *later*.

    Pop culture can hit people harder than real stories sometimes, because they’ve seen these people, as people, and thought of them as people (“geez, I think Gibbs was a bit harsh, there,”), and that’s a lot of connection.

    And they know that, e.g., Kate was from the Secret Service, and McGee was coming over from computer security, and no way, no how, was “firing probies across the board” a good decision.

    “Maybe there was a smart way to do this – THIS was NOT IT!”

    Y’all might know other cultural touchstones, where “it doesn’t matter he has five years experience, *here* he’s probationary for a year. It’s just the way it is!” might get called out – that’s another way to use messaging.

    (And maybe a chance to watch some old TV? I dunno – might be better than doomscrolling and watching TT.)

    @Kristine: I’ve learned to use a Kitchen Aid for kneading, once I knew how wet bread dough was supposed to be. The *nice* thing about that was, I got to see the dough go through the stages of “grainy/lumpy” to “smoothing” to “smooth/elastic”.

    Then, if you want to knead, you have a better idea what to look for, if’n you ever want to. I’m afraid kneading is beyond me.

    But kneading (as no-knead breads show) can be overrated. If all you want is *good bread*, you can save a lot of effort.

    @WTFGhost: I do have a Kitchen-Aid with a dough hook. I think I used it once, for some whole wheat bread. The bread came out okay for all it was pretty dense. But that’s what happens with straight whole wheat according to the recipes I’ve read.

    I’m sure I’ll give kneading another try at some point. But this recipe made a decent loaf the first time I tried it, and the orange aroma of the dough is promising.

    Re: Tik Tok embed.  It played on my mac with chrome but as others have said, on autoplay, muted.  It was fine.  And I rewound the first guy’s rant three times but I never could understand what he said or even read the words.  He talked way too fast for this old.

    National Nuclear Security Administration officials on Friday attempted to notify some employees who had been let go the day before that they are now due to be reinstated — but they struggled to find them because they didn’t have their new contact information.

    In an email sent to employees at NNSA and obtained by NBC News, officials wrote, “The termination letters for some NNSA probationary employees are being rescinded, but we do not have a good way to get in touch with those personnel.”

    The individuals the letter refers to had been fired on Thursday and lost access to their federal government email accounts. NNSA, which is within the Department of Energy and oversees the nation’s nuclear stockpile, cannot reach these employees directly and is now asking recipients of the email, “Please work with your supervisors to send this information (once you get it) to people’s personal contact emails.”

    The Trump administration fired 20 immigration judges without explanation, a union official said on Saturday amid sweeping moves to shrink the size of the federal government.

    On Friday, 13 judges who had yet to be sworn in and five assistant chief immigration judges were dismissed without notice, said Matthew Biggs, president of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, which represents federal workers. Two other judges were fired under similar circumstances in the last week.

    It was unclear whether they would be replaced. The US Department of Justice’s executive office for immigration review, which runs the courts and oversees its roughly 700 judges, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday.

    Immigration courts are backlogged with more than 3.7m cases, according to Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, and it takes years to decide asylum cases. There is support across the political spectrum for more judges and support staff, though the first Trump administration also put pressure on some judges to decide cases more quickly.

    The Trump administration earlier replaced five top court officials, including Mary Cheng, the Executive Office for Immigration Review’s acting director. Sirce Owen, the current leader and previously an appellate immigration judge, has issued a slew of new instructions, many reversing policies of the Biden administration.

    I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that were by design.  1) 6x as many views on Winders!  2) Annoys enough people to get them to download the TT app instead so that TT can directly harvest even more data about them.

    Similarly with the 2nd one – many refreshes to get everything synced to work from the beginning with the sound on.

The lower pH helps stop the reaction that prevents the yeast from fully expanding, which is one reason you end up with dense, even gummy, bread. Sour dough starter achieves the same result. This is one reason most recipes include all-purpose flour with whole wheat bread recipes. It has to do with the higher protein content with whole grain flours.​

    I miss TikTok but people are right – its addictive. There really is something more authentic about the people over there though – it definitely includes a better cross section of the country. I feel like it has a low bar to entry, that people feel they can go there and create content even if they’re not super savvy. For example, TikTok has this whole subgenre of people (women) unloading boxes from food banks or showing us how much food EBT buys. You’re just not going to see that on Instagram or Twitter.

But there was a science blog called Respectful Insolence (it’s still around!) whose creator, “Orac”, spent a lot of time looking into alt-med claims and he was all over it, pointing out that nothing the article was saying was actually new, it was basically a development of Wakefield’s old grift and had been long-debunked.
