The Okavango Delta in Botswana is the seasonal swamp at the northern edge of the Kalahari. The Boteti River flows out of the delta to the east and south. The river forms the western boundary of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. I stayed at a lodge just outside the park and went on morning and late afternoon game drives. These photos were taken in the river floodplain as the level of the water was quite low.

Two unsurprisingly named Yellow-billed storks standing in the river. I imagined they were a couple hanging out at a coffee shop in conversation – the one on the right saying “actually.”

A male African Darter perched on a dead branch. After getting wet diving they have to spread their wings to dry out.

I think this is a Rüppell’s Starling but I defer to Albatrossity for a more definitive identification. Note the tire tracks in the sand – all the vehicles were 4WD Toyota Land Cruisers. We still got stuck in the sand once.

This Nile crocodile is not acting aggressively. They open their mouths to let in sunlight to get warm. There were several birds nearby that it was ignoring.
Next post – mostly bigger critters.

I want to go back to Africa and do a real safari.

@Baud: Me too!

Love all these, especially the Pied Crow.

@Baud:
Yeah, those AI safaris are quite inferior.
Elma
Our driver/guide in Botswana had a giant coffee table size bird book in the truck that he pulled out to settle the “what bird is that?” questions.

Great photos. That is one beautiful serious looking owl.
Albatrossity
Nice shots!
I don’t think that starling is Ruppell’s; they should have a yellow eye. Perhaps Meve’s Starling? I’m not familiar enough with Botswana avifauna to do anything but guess!
Did you get to see the flamboyant pink eyelids of the Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl?
Albatrossity
Or perhaps this one, Burchell’s Starling. Do you have other shots? From this one image it appears to have a rounded tail, which favor’s Burchell’s. But other shots of the tail would perhaps help with the ID.

@Albatrossity: The eyelids were not distinctive in the light. I have a photo hanging on my wall of another owl with the pink eyelids clearly visible.

@Albatrossity: Sorry that is the only photo of the Starling I saved.
Albatrossity
@lashonharangue: Oh, that’s unfortunate. I save everything from trips, especially trips overseas. It’s amazing how a year or two of improvements in photo processing technology can help you rescue photos that you deemed unusable at first glance.
