The term jackal was used as early as the 17th century to describe someone who behaved in a conniving or subservient way. The Black-backed jackals I saw seemed pretty independent, though wary.

Driving further into the park we saw many giraffes.

The dead tree is probably the result of elephants. We didn’t see any near the river. I suspect they migrated north for better vegetation in the Okavango Delta at that time of year.

The river bank across from the lodge was thick with grass that attracted many animals during the day. This photo and the next two were taken from the balcony of our room.

While on driving safaris in Africa I was able to get many photos of female kudus. The males seemed much more skittish and often moved behind vegetation or ran off before I could get a decent photo. This magnificent beast either didn’t know I was on the balcony or felt sufficiently safe to pose.

That kudu knows what she’s doing.

I did some time in Botswana and I can tell you this is all fake.
Zebras are just donkeys tricked out in black and white paint. The giraffe suits require two people and take some some time to figure out but once you get the act down the Americans fall for it every time. Easy money. Fucking white tourists.

Nice pics! I went to Nxai Pans to the east, which appeared to be much dustier drier, but then I went during the dry season.
sab
I like those African coyotes, and those autistic horses
ETA: Why do you need a diagnosis?
It’s good to know I am a normal zebra instead of a defective horse.

I have nothing clever to say, but I’ve really been enjoying these pictures. Also, I absolutely love zebras. And the greater kudlus resemble those cakes that are iced by dripping a powdered-sugar and lemon glaze along the top. I’d be curious, if there were any biologists in the house, to know whether that kind of thin/thick striping is typical among members of whatever kind of animal the kudlu is.

Great photos of magnificent animals! My fave are the giraffes. I have a friend who is a giraffe-keeper at a local zoo and I love visiting her at work.
@Torrey: Not an expert of any kind, but vertical striping helps animals blend into grassland environments.

Just love these pictures. I love zebras and giraffes. And the jackal is beautiful. Thanks!

Kudus to you for the fab photos! What an experience. Love zebras — and giraffes.

@YY_Sima Qian: I also went to the Nxai Pan during this trip. Very dry indeed. I may post those pictures in the future. The drive there was where our Land Cruiser got stuck in the sand.

@SpaceUnit: [David Attenborough voice] In order to observe the snarling jackals in their native habitat one must travel to the comments section of Balloon Juice.

@lashonharangue: Loving this series, even if it’s just a series of two.

It must be rather magical to come across this animal feast for the eyes. Love the jackel…

@lashonharangue: Look forward to them! Did you go see the Baines’ Baobabs or the meerkats, or both?
lashonharangue
@YY_Sima Qian: Saw the Boababs, not the meerkats.
