Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

The revolution will be supervised.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Let there be snark.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Placemarker, because WaterGirl has a serious constructive post in the wings.

Overnight, I pulled together a *bunch* of skeets / tweets on the Repubs’ growing terror at how little the WH Occupants’ proposed budget is going to please their constituents… and a corresponding batch from our Democrats, now in Array. Some of them will probably be outdated by the time most of you see this, anyways, so: Keep the positive thoughts!

Good morning, AL and Baud and SD.

AL, is this the overnight thread you mentioned?  Had not read it yet; photo is a Cabinet meeting with hipster Musk in a dominating position, as The Felon slumbers in his seat.

Not a conspiracy theorist, but does anyone else think that The Felon actually sold Musk the presidency?  Looks like he might have, more or less.

That’s a very good clip of Slotkin, and she speaks clearly and the Fox News bubblebots would totally listen to her and get what she is saying.

I wish the clip was longer.  I wanted to hear more of what the nominee was saying in response.

    @Belafon:  AP Story overnight:
In lawsuit filing, Pentagon says transgender troops can’t serve unless they meet a warfighting need

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon revealed the specifics of its new transgender troop policy in a court filing Wednesday that says any service member or recruit who has been diagnosed with or treated for gender dysphoria is disqualified from serving — unless they can prove they meet a specific warfighting need and adhere to severe restrictions on their day-to-day behavior.

The policy memo was included in the latest court filing in a lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s executive order against transgender military service, one of many hot-button issues the president made a priority to address on his first days in office.

Like the executive order, the policy filed Wednesday suggests that the lethality and integrity of the military “is inconsistent” with what transgender personnel go through as they transition to the gender they identify with, and issues an edict that gender is “immutable, unchanging during a person’s life.”

… Gender dysphoria occurs when a person’s biological sex does not match up with their gender identity.

While the number of transgender troops serving is small compared to the size of the total force, it’s taken up a large amount of time and attention both at the White House and within the Pentagon. The military services due to medical privacy laws do not provide an exact count of transgender troops, but a 2018 independent study by the Palm Center, which researched LGBTQ issues, assessed there were an estimated 14,000 transgender troops among the more than 2 million troops serving.

It was a policy Trump tried to overturn in his first term in office but the issue ended up mired in lawsuits until former President Joe Biden was elected and he overturned the ban.

Also:  “warfighting.”  Bizarre word.  Have seen it before.  I guess that’s the part of our brave military that is not involved in ramming DEI down our civilian throats?

Warfighter – or warrior – as opposed to “just soldiers” has been going on for a long time.

It’s been an instant red flag for me when evaluating leaders. It seems like a good line for the people on the tooth end, but first it nibbles at morale on the tail and it also encourages lack of discipline at the tooth. After all, what warfighter wastes time doing anything that isn’t putting bullets on the enemy? The higher the leader the bigger the red flag gets.

My thoughts for today are that people are going ape shit over Trump’s Gold Card idea, but here’s the rub I think.   People are saying it allows rich people to buy their way into the country, but it sounds like they’re already able to do that with the EB-5 visa program and all Trump is doing is raising the price.

I say fuck it, take the money and run.

@Kirk: The Warfighter crowd assumes that there is nothing valuable done by anyone who’s not driving a tank waving a gun. Does someone need to service the tank, provide meals, fill out paychecks? The “warfighters” wouldn’t last long without the support of other troops, but since neither Trump nor Musk has ever been anywhere near the military, they don’t know that.

@kwAwk: The “Gold Card” visa for $5M inherently reeks, but since the payment would presumably need to be made directly to a government agency, what I don’t get is where the opportunity for grift is.  If there is some eligibility screening beyond just having $5M it could be corrupting the screening process with some form of pay-for-play on top of the $5M, but corrupting the green card process could be done without the $5M fee to the government – um wait- they are going to “privatize” this special process in some way by contracting it out aren’t they?

Barrett is a first term-er for MI-07 who won the seat vacated by now Sen. Slotkin.  He’s a veteran of the Army or Army National Guard. I live in MI-07, so my letters to Barrett often mention the horrible treatment of veterans and their families by the Trump/Musk/DOGE pillagers.
