I can’t fall asleep so I tried reading then ended up just scrolling bluesky and tiktok and I know you shouldn’t expose yourself to blue light before bed and oh shut up I know, and at any rate I came across the story of Scrim the rogue dog in New Orleans and I am mad at every single one of you who knew about this but said nothing:

A scruffy New Orleans rescue dog famed for evading a monthslong effort to recapture him using nets and tranquilizer rifles has finally been caught and returned to domestic life Tuesday.

Scrim, a 17-pound mutt who has become a Louisiana folk hero, first escaped from his adopted family in April and roamed the city for months until he was cornered and brought back home. Weeks later, in October, he leaped out of a second-story window in a moment recorded on video that got attention online.

During his months on the lam, Scrim survived a hurricane and freezing blizzard conditions. A posse of volunteers tracked his movements over 57 square miles (148 square kilometers) using wildlife surveillance cameras and a crowdsourced map of sightings.

The renowned fugitive was ultimately captured in a cat trap, said Michelle Cheramie, the owner of animal rescue nonprofit Zeus’ Rescues who led the mission to find Scrim. Cheramie, a former information technology professional who has devoted her life to caring for animals after losing her home during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, has said she was “born to rescue.”

It’s a terrier, of course.

      @SpaceUnit: Maybe avoid chewing through a window screen and leaping from a second floor window, too. Who is Scrim trying to find his way back to? He was out the window and on his way up the street in the blink of an eye!

      In my world, a cat trap.is merely an open cardboard box left in a strategic location (like a sunny spot or near a heating vent). It doesn’t even matter if the cat fits, they’ll find a way.

      I have eyeglasses that filter out blue light from screens, J.C., you should try this kind.  Every little bit helps and these cheaters are only $15 a pair.  If the cats hadn’t started shit with each other in my bed, I’d be in la la land right now.

      Also, I too have come to appreciate my blue-blocker readers.  And if you have a Mac you can activate the night shift mode to further reduce the blue light.  Other brands probably offer a similar function.

      I am in my basement lair in an effort to not wake hubby.  But I hear him moving around up there.  I will smell fresh brewed coffee very soon, a temptation that I must avoid today if I want any semblance of a nap.  Double gah.

      @NotMax: of a sort!  I initially made a man cave of our finished basement for hubby, even have cable TV down here.  I put all my best furniture from DelCo down here when we got new for this house. Yuge sectional sofa with chaise lounge, several comfy, overstuffed reclining chairs, coffee & end tables, dining set, lamps, carpeting, etc.  Entertainment center with large TV and my stereo for surround sound. But he never got the feels, so I took it over.

      Thank you for the comedy, I will watch that!

      @NotMax: I just caught a VERY cool commercial interlude during a rewind of that comedy video. Cast of Grace & Frankie teaming up with Greenpeace for further climate action!   My Sheroes Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin, and Sam Waterston plus the actor who plays Jane’s daughter on the show.  THANK YOU and I haven’t even heard much of the comedy yet!  SO inspiring!

      Late changing the litter boxes ( tax season) so they are all upstairs expressing their displeasure. Some yowl at us. Others pee inapproriately right in front of us. Disrespectful.

      @SpaceUnit: We’ve been in the U.K. for only a couple of days now, but have already been in multiple conversations (a clerk at a men’s clothing store, cabby, patrons at a pub) where the moment they realize we are Americans they just launch about how disastrous Trump is.  Thank god I was wearing my Harris-Walz tshirt whilst getting fitted for a suit.

      I think the folks we have talked to were glad to know that many Americans are just as disgusted as they are.

      @TBone: Councilwoman Jamie Gauthier knows it is Womens History Month and so she & they issued a Proclamation!  A Writ of Condemnation!

      As the place where the constitution was ratified, City Council has a responsibility to condemn Trump’s tyrannical assault on our constitution and reaffirm how treacherous it is for the President of the United States to refer to himself as a king. (2/2)

      We fixed the fascist issue last time by killing them.  Growing up my dad and all his friends had been through WW2.  All of them had been through shit we can’t fathom.  They’re all dead now and I’m glad they didn’t live to see this happen.  On the other hand if they had they would have been fine with shooting people in MAGA hats as soon as you saw them.

      Our ancestors were very flawed people as all people are flawed.  But they knew how to deal with Nazis.  Kill them.  If  you get them to trial, you try them and then kill them.

      I don’t think of myself as a violent person.  I did serve and deploy post 9/11 though.  Maybe my dad and has friends had the right idea about how to handle this?

      @Geminid: Ankara-based Clash Report also posted concerning news about the Gaza ceasefire. The first 42-day phase of the ceasefire expired today without agreement to proceed into Phase Two.

      Israeli PM says that because Hamas has not accepted a new Phase Two proposal from Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, he is halting shipments of aid into Gaza. News reports confirm thst Israel has halted the shipments.

      Hamas called this “cheap blackmail, and a blatant coup against the agreement” signed in January:

         Netanyahu is trying to establish political facts on the ground that his fascist army failed to establish over 15 months.

      The transition to Phase Two was always a potential point of failure in this agreement, and now it looks like Netanyshu is about to blow up the ceasefire with U.S. acquiescence.

      eta: Had both an Airedale and a Fox Terrier and windows would be nothing. I’m pretty sure that Fox Terrier could have demolished a house, because she did so to my kitchen one evening. Then laid a giant “gift” in the middle of the kitchen table. We got her a crate after that one.

      p.s. I LOVE terriers but we have similar personalities and so not a good combo.

      I find this a sad story and I’m inclined to read it as a metaphor for American authoritarianism in these days. He obviously doesn’t want to be with those people and can cope fine on his own, and isn’t hurting anyone.  Free Scrim!!

      @Baud: The nations with the most leverage here are the Egyptians, Saudis and Emiratis. The last two might not mind seeing the IDF go after Hamas again, even if more civilians are killed.

      European governments have been fairly passive throughout this war. If Israel cranks this war up again they’ll just call for another ceasefire.

Colonel Great Uncle who received a Purple Heart at Pearl Harbor (one of many medals over his lifelong military career), and my Viet Nam War vet (step)Dad took little me & little bro out into an open field with a long gun (shotgun) to teach us how to use it as children.  About 9 years old, I think.  When it knocked me down, they made me get back up and lean into it.  Mom had vigorously protested the lessons at first, until the “just in case” aspects were explained (bio dad was Jewish so she caught on very quickly).

      Enough said hahaha!

      @no body no name: dude, no!  I locked myself out one morning and tried to leap from my steps across to second floor condo balcony (had success once or twice beforehand) and fell.  Broke all ribs on left side, punctured lung, broke pelvis and shattered left arm is now a titanium rod. Do NOT recommend!  I didn’t want to be late for work but I was six weeks late!

      @Geminid: oh I know where to get it right here in PA, legal or not  – have been required to stay here to tube feed cat every four hours.  That’s over now praise the LORT! Tube coming out first thing tomorrow morning 😍

      The mixing of food each day, preparation of syringes with meds & food, cleanup, etc. is all incredibly time consuming and difficult.  Pushing food through that large syringe into the tiny tube at all hours has beefed up my upper body strength though!

      My wife is a tiny little thing.  Also a very dark skinned Asian woman.  She always hated that I own a gun.  It was tolerated as I was in the military and at times my work does require I need one on travel but she didn’t like it.

      After Trump got elected again she asked me to teach her.  Just in case.  My 45 is a bit too much gun for her but she took to it with relish.  We are looking at a 9mm for her.

      There’s always the “don’t go primed for problems or problems  you will find” issue with guns but I think it’s fine.

      I love to see this because we had a German Shepherd who did the same thing. No video, no one saw the jump, but there were enough clues like the shredded screen and dog hair on the windowsill.

      we’re gonna need an FDR in the robber baron class who believes in redistribution of wealth, isn’t worried about being an insider in the robber baron world, and can figure out how to connect to the masses without any help from mass media. As far as I can tell there aren’t that many like Soros or Buffett on the younger side who aren’t narcissistic assholes who understand that historically this kind of accumulation of wealth by the .001% does not end well for anyone, including the .001%.
      Soutpiel may believe that ‘this time’ he can prevent the end of whatever apartheid hellscape he has planned for everyone (including his Muskrat minions).
