My dear wife texted me, she was attending some crafting thing in a semi-artsy little town down near the (RI) shore, when she looked out the window and saw hundreds of people marching with anti-Trump, anti-Musk and pro-Ukraine (!) signs. All handmade signs, no idea who organized this or why today, but she was moved to tears. This is a town that, to the best of our knowledge, has approximately zero Ukrainian population.

I will add that AOC is a treasure and I see nothing wrong with her staying in that safe seat forever, until she is as old as Pelosi, and rabble rousing from there.
Unlike other people, I don’t have fantasies of her in the Senate or White House. Seems unlikely and I would not want to take a chance of losing her voice after a failed campaign.

Word is that he’s rescinding the order to fire probationary employees (did someone finally explain to him that they’re not “on probation”?) and Lutnick says at least some of the Canadian and Mexican tariffs are going to be rescinded. The first may be because a judge told them OPM can’t wholesale fire people, and I wonder if some business interests have threatened to sue about the tariffs. Those are also probably illegal because they’re not based on any trade grounds (e.g., unfair comp), given that Canada and Mexico are conforming to a trade deal Trump negotiated with them.
Gin & Tonic

Every time Mr trump complains about how poor the USMC was negotiated I think “self own”, and l, I must admit, I laugh a bit like Beevis.

@Ohio Mom:
This got me wondering. We see people dismiss AOC in any leadership role now and going forward for her lack of “legislative accomplishments”, the implication being that beneath everything, she’s a lightweight. Well, what about Nancy Smash *prior* to becoming Speaker of the House?
Obviously both Obama and Biden owe *massive* amounts of gratitude for arguably one of the best Speakers in House history for their respective legacies, so her ability in that regard should be lionized.
But what about before? I’ll be damned if I can find anything in terms of her being a legislative workhorse the way some people seem to think AOC should be if to advance, career-wise, in the House.
The skillsets for one over the other are very different so one is not an indicator of how well one will do in the other role and vice-versa. Again, I just couldn’t find specific bills that Pelosi had authored or co-authored (as opposed to sponsoring, they’re different beasts, right?).
Who here has met AOC? Or seen her speak in person? I have, twice. She’s the real deal. Also a member of the House Progressive Caucus which says something. Oh wait, so is Ro Khanna, basically the glibertarian techbro’s personal Congressman, so maybe that’s not such a big deal. ;)

Nice to see a few Democrats have decided not to participate in tonight’s theater. Sen. Patty Murray is one of them, and I already thanked her office staff today.
For those in attendance, I hope they do something impactful, like walk out when the BS gets to be too much, or when Trump starts bashing trans people or anyone else he has grievances with.
Anything that shows opposition would be fine, in any and all forms.

it’s so expensive to win a primary (get a nomination in Canada) that all but a very few legislators are selected from people who can afford to fight a small campaign themselves.
This biases the selection process of all parties (and yes, that includes the NDP) towards the well-to do, giving you a bias towards the right in even the leftmost parties.
Ohio Mom
@comrade scotts agenda of rage: All I know is AOC is filling an important role just doing what she is doing now. And she is young, lots of years of professional development ahead of her.

@Trollhattan: Reason #3457345 to hatedespiseloathe Stinky Cheetolini is his juvenile namecalling of “Governor Trudeau”, 51st state etc — it’s beneath a head of state to disrespect a neighbor and sovereign county. Even diehard MAGAts must be sick of it by now.

Semi-grudge-holding. I remember the “Law and Order” Richard M Nixon, and his equally criminal Vice President, violating the Constitution and a whole slew of laws. My first vote against that crime boss in 1972. And then, neither spends one day in jail because … it would hurt Republicans’ feelings, and well, you can’t have that, can you?
And Iran-Contra thing getting whitewashed away in the late Eighties. Again, the lawyers made it all go away, just like magic.
And the Brooks Brothers Riot in Florida in 2000 that stopped the vote count, and like a miracle, the Supreme Court, with a Republican majority, agrees with the stopped vote count because … reasons (that only apply to Republicans, thankyouverymuch).
And an illegal war in Iraq, but who’s counting? At least 500,000 dead Iraqis, for no reason at all, but that doesn’t matter to Fox News, CNN, or MSNBC.
Party of Lincoln, my ass. It’s the party of wealth, crime and crooked lawyers and judges.

ON the tariffs, They are not thinking of a compromise, because you need someone to compromise with. @Ohio Mom: Excepting her youth with her father’s campaigns Nancy Pelosi didn’t even think about politics until she had raised six children. Who even does that anymore? And then she got pressured into something local like the library board, where she saw what was needed and worked for it.
When she finally was speaker she had never even been in the actual building’s office, because that is how much contempt Congress had for women.
Aoc is starting very young and possibly giving up a lot. But she might do a lot staying where she is. Run for presidenr as a wo an in America: you will lose.

Gloria DryGarden
@TBone: it’s working for me, at least the first page of it.
Elizabelle
@ColoradoGuy:
Yup. Lincoln himself would have fled, decades ago.
Glory b
@Ohio Mom: No, the speaker’s job is to be more like a business manager, appoint members to committees, manage the day to day operations, schedule votes, give members permission to speak on the floor.
The speaker only otes on the most important bills & spends most of their time making sure to wrangle enough votes for the party’s proposed legislation. They don’t spend much time on public speaking, more often in conference with individual members.
Pelosi’s prodigious fundraising abilities were a bonus. But she was the most successful speaker in US history too.
AOC? I doubt she’s ready for that role anytime soon. She’s supported primary challenges to several members (Shontel Brown, Hakeem Jeffries, Sharice David come to mind), the speaker’s role includes supporting incumbents, she’s probably not terribly popular with several of them for that reason. She also has a record of voting against the party fairly often, not a good track record for a speaker.
Remember, they vote for the speaker, not us. The speaker has to protect members in swing districts, I don’t know how well she’d do that, her experience has been in a safe seat.
She’s also never passed a piece of legislation, which is why the speaker exists.
