Angkor Wat was named the 8th modern wonder of the world in 2023. It is the largest religious structure in the world, being spread across 400 km. It was built as a Hindu temple in the early 12th century as the king’s state temple and his eventual mausoleum. Over time, parts of the temple were changed to reflect Buddhism.
The temple complex is surrounded by an outer wall, 3,360 ft by 15 ft high. It is encircled by a 98 ft apron of open ground and a moat 620 ft wide and over 3.1 m in perimeter. Access to the temple is by an earth bank to the east and a sandstone causeway to the west; the latter, the main entrance, is a later addition, possibly replacing a wooden bridge.
Seeing it in person was just incredible!

This is the sandstone bridge across the moat.

My first glimpse of the temple

My attempt at taking a picture of the reflection of Angkor Wat in the water of a lake at the base.

I have to say, Auntie Anne, you don’t look anything at all like I pictured you.

For anyone who considers visiting AW in the future, there is a great guided, bicycle tour that starts at sunrise (amazing to watch) and takes you out to several of the outer, less crowded temples. You get to bike through the jungle and little villages between temples. If you can manage about 3-5 miles and handle the potential heat/humidity, it is a really great way to explore the grounds.

@UncleEbeneezer: I saw the pathway for that tour and people taking it. It sounded like a lot of fun, but way beyond some of the members on our tour.
