This flower is totally unaware of the existence of Elon Musk, et. al.
It’s also looking quite healthy considering I’ve done fuck-all in the garden over the last year. I finally, finally, finally close on this house later this month, though, and once I’m officially no longer renting the joint, I plan to get things in ship-shape for next spring. Raised beds, new paths, a magnolia tree. I’ve never owned a house of my own before, so 2025 is set to give me that, at least.
Looks like we could use an open thread, so here you go.
Trivia Man
Consider the lilies of the field… and the daffodils as well.
Some whisper of bible still echoes in my head.
WTFGhost
Well, sometimes life thrives, even when you haven’t cherished it.
Rose Judson
@WTFGhost: Plants gonna plant, at least outdoors. What’s amusing is that half the daffodil bulbs I’ve planted in this place when I was trying to tend the garden properly were relocated by squirrels.
Eunicecycle
We almost always see daffodils and crocuses by now in Ohio, but not this year. It’s been cold and wet, more like the old days before global climate change. I love the picture!
Ohio Mom
Our daffodils are far from blooming but they are on their way. The critters who have eaten all the tulip and crocus bulbs must not like the taste of them.
Let me be the first to congratulate you on the house, Rose. House ownership is not without headaches but it has made me feel rooted and I appreciate that feeling.
My late friend’s almost 30 y.o. son visited us last week and loaned me, maybe insisted I read it is more accurate, a Michael Parenti book. It’s titled “Black Shirts and Reds: Rational Fascism and the overthrow of Communism.”
If I was interested in stuff like this, I’d subscribe to the Jacobian. I have been trying to fashion a response to him, about how our generational differences have given me a different view. Or maybe it’s age.

Daffodils do bring joy after dull, gray winter days. Let’s hope we have brighter days ahead.

And looks pretty self satisfied about its ignorance.

I have one (1) daffodil blooming in my yard – my neighbors across the street have a row of dozens of blooming daffodils. A good example of microclimates!

I’ve got elephant garlic sprouts that look like tulips, but OMG, an overpowering scent of garlic!

Congradulations on home ownership. It is wonderful. Be prepared for the work (upgrades to upkeep) is never finished. Don’t let that drag your down. See more as an open canvas to paint.

Thank you for the oblivious and thriving daffodil =-)

On today’s trip into Town proper, we got Thin Mints and Caramel Delights (formerly known as Samoas) from the Girl Scouts outside the local butcher shop. Inside was a Wet Bottom ShooFly pie made locally and the cutest short ribs on sale, among other delights like brisket to corn for St. Patty’s Day. My nickname in grade school was Peppermint Patty and I take the luck very seriously hahaha! Browned up the short ribs real good in 2 tbs. bacon grease I saved, then removed and added sliced onion, salt & plenty of fresh cracked pepper. Deglazed with chianti and added all to crockpot with fresh grape tomatoes halved and macerated in a teaspoon of sugar, a can of petite diced tomatoes, a glug of beef stock, four cloves of minced garlic. Sprinkled in some more salt & pepper, dried oregano, paprika, and chili powder.
I am a dirty girl scout!

In Genesis 2, the oldest Creation myth, God commands Adam – literally “soil man” – to till and keep the garden. It’s our job one.

@NotMax: excellent.

@TBone:
I’ll be by, say, seven? How about a nice Barolo to go with it?
Damnit, suddenly hungry.
JoyceH
@TBone: I bought GS cookies this year, first time in years. BTW, have you heard of freezing the Thin Mints? Supposed to make them even more delicious. I just heard that recently, and apparently it’s one of those “everyone knows that!” things.
Rose Judson
@TBone: All of that sounds amazing, but I will say one thing I miss about the US is Girl Scout cookies. I won awards for my troop selling them a couple years running when I was a kid, and as a dyed-in-the-wool introvert, I hated it.
Ordered myself several boxes of caramel delights/Samoas every year from my allowance, though. Those are the BOMB.
TBone
@trollhattan: YUM
It is still chilly & a bit windy here today. Hubby was in so much pain (side effect of Repatha) after our foraging mission that he couldn’t take us to the protest I was raring to go to today on the Court House steps in a nearby town. I had to put him into our jacuzzi jet bath and then, to take the sting out of missing a longed-for event today, Noah and I played in the yard together, him rolling around in the sunshine loving life! and playing Hide and Seek mischievously where he thinks I can’t see him. His little face of delight when I “find” him takes the sting out of anything.
MagdaInBlack
@TBone: I chose, as expected, the worst time of day to go for groceries. But as there is no good time for traffic, I rewarded myself with chocolate: brownies and almond butter cups. I’m soothing myself with some now.
Set an extra plate for dinner, please.
TBone
@Rose Judson: I’ve already eaten half of them! Glad to hear you are also a fan, may I have some airlifted to you?
Omnes Omnibus
@RevRick: When Adam delved and Eve span, who then was the gentleman?
TBone
@MagdaInBlack: we have an extra long table, wish y’all were here!
P.S. how did I not know of the existence of almond butter cups till right now???
TBone
@JoyceH: hubby doesn’t want me to freeze his 😭 but I will sneak some into the hoosgow!

My 7th grade social studies teacher had a weekend farm-ette. And he very famously had one day a year when he’d regale his students with his “daffodil lecture” which was a lengthy slide show of his massive couple of acres of daffodils! It was one of those things the 8th graders all managed to stay mum about so each year, a new class of students could go “WTF, why are we watching a bunch of slides about flowers?” before tumbling to “Oh, no notes, no pop quiz, no homework. Okay!!”
Somehow the admin didn’t get mad at his one wasted day of instruction, which was cool of them.
MagdaInBlack
@TBone: Trader Joe’s: in the temptations section: when you’re waiting to check out. Lately TJ’s is the least expensive for milk and butter and good frozen stuff. And chocolate.

@RaflW: Spring Fever had obvs overtaken him and he thought it should be contagious!
A Ghost to Most
Daffodils are also unaware of my much requested pot roast which will be ready in three hours. So, there’s a balance.
NotMax
@RaflW
I see what you did there. :)
TBone
@MagdaInBlack: I will consider online purchasing those ASAP! I’m also hankering for some good toffee. TJs had really good chocolate-dipped toffee slabs covered in crushed nuts. Hope I can get online!
TBone
@Omnes Omnibus: that’s a damn good question.
MagdaInBlack
@TBone: Last I knew, they did not do on-line ordering.

@MagdaInBlack: crap! Luck ‘O the Irish ran out.
Never mind, lass, next trip to home County will bring me to TJs!

@Eunicecycle: We’re six weeks behind on daffodils here.

@Rose Judson: that’s weird, because daffodils are considered toxic. Crocus, and tulips, however…

@Rose Judson: Thanks for the yellow cheer! It made me immediately reorder the heirloom jonquils I need to replace the ones I fucked up last year. Happy Spring, jackals. It’s coming.

@JoyceH: simply wonderful
Do try it !

@trollhattan:
Perhaps the report, certainly not Lone Skum’s intentions.

I have forbidden mrs coin from bringing Thin Mints home. The problem…1 box = 1 serving

@RevRick: I interpret the emphasis on labor in the Genesis story as: Our ancestors may not have come up with particularly believable stories, but they did know what questions would plague us for eternity.
Here is an answer to the question, Why must we work, why must we spend our days in (for most people, unsatisfying) toil?
The answer may not be convincing to you — Adam and Eve got kicked out of Eden — but the question still resonates.

Both maternal Great Grannies were named Alice. One was Alice Gray whose family had been here for a long time and the other, fresh off a ship from Ireland, was Alice Cunningham. Mom said she was gonna name me Allison but changed her mind…lace curtains Irish it was said of Alice.

@Ohio Mom: Crocus thomasinianus varieties are not eaten by Squirrels. They’re not the big fat hybrids but they’re beautiful. Anne Laurie has some pictures of mine in an upcoming garden post.
JoyceH
@coin operated: That’s what I’m loving about Zepbound – I can actually eat the amount the box calls a serving. Used to be I’d look at a mix box that claims it makes five servings and go, “Five? Pfft – two, three tops.” But now yep, it’s five servings.
NotMax
@TBone
Hm.
Have a scrumptious but (IIRC) somewhat labor intensive short ribs recipe which haven’t made since last century. Maybe will pull it out since am going on the monthly shopping jaunt into town on Monday.

@Eunicecycle: First spring in my new house and there are plants coming up that look like they might be daffodils. Here’s hoping because we have deer that come through at night and eat everything else.

@Rose Judson: At my old house the squirrels srole the neighbors’ tulip bulbs and planted them in our yard because we had a squirrel/bird feeder.
Bulgakov
Congrats on the upcoming home-owning Rose. The yardwork is never done if you have gardens.
Have been cleaning out the flower gardens surrounding our house since the most recent KC area blizzard on Tuesday (started melting Wed thankfully) and our daffodils are barely breaking the surface. The tulips are about and inch and a half up, but the alliums, lordy, the alliums are 3 inches tall and ready to shake off winter with a vengeance. I’m afraid their rise to glory may be stricken by a hard freeze still.
Pick the right plant for the right place and your garden will be a place of joy.

@Omnes Omnibus:
@TBone:
Basically, Paul, the apostle, answered that question by referring to the original baptismal creed of the church, when he quoted, “there is no Jew or Greek, no slave or free, no male and female.” *
* A lot of translations insert the word “longer” in this triad, but it’s not in the original Greek.
In other words, the church was asserting that all hierarchies of race, class, and gender are bullshit.
RevRick
@Ohio Mom: Chapter 3 certainly adds a just-so set of explanations for the way the world is and the suffering that shapes it to the story. But Chapter 2 is about what God intends for Creation: life, curiosity (the naming) and companionship ( it’s not good that adamah should be alone). This latter point is the basis of the Puritan rationale for marriage, in contrast to the Roman Catholic view based in Genesis 1 “be fruitful and multiply.”
