Soprano2
@Baud: I don’t agree with this. People know what they’re paying for stuff at the store regardless of what the government is telling them about the economy. The higher prices got the Biden administration in trouble because they didn’t want to acknowledge what a problem it was. After relentlessly campaigning on “we’re bringing down prices on the first day and reining in inflation immediately”, a message of “there’s going to be some pain” is not going to be a winning message, at least not for normies. I agree that MAGAs will believe whatever comes out of his mouth, but the rest of the people won’t. @Kristine: they aren’t conservatives, they’re radical reactionaries. Conservatives want to “conservative” things, these guys want to slash and immolate things.
Barbara
@Kristine: It’s worse than that, even. It’s a willful act of imaginative distortion to think that you would not be harmed at least as much by tariffs this time around as you were last time around. My husband has extended family that run a very large and sophisticated soy bean operation — they sell mostly to Japanese buyers that work with them to create hybrids for specific kinds of uses — and one of the members told me that the first round of tariffs had basically zeroed out all of their profits. They are not MAGA (not obviously, anyway, not even in a yard sign kind of way) but there are whole states, like Nebraska, with an economy that depends on the one hand on growing and processing grains and soybeans for export, and processing meat for both domestic and export consumption.
Add tariffs and a restricted labor supply and it gets a lot smaller. Unless Congress offers them “relief” like they did the first time around. Somehow I think that’s going to be a lot harder to pull off this time around.
Soprano2
@gene108: I think MAGAs will be willing to suffer, because the economy isn’t why they voted for FFOTUS in the first place. Others, though, feel that they’ve been suffering since 2020 and won’t be willing to have more suffering just so FFOTUS can do things they don’t care about.

Barbara
@Soprano2: No, I don’t think you have that right. I don’t know who they will vote for, but the story of MAGA is that white people have been largely insulated from the consequences of their voting preferences. They got used to being bailed out even if they never consciously thought of it as being bailed out — whether by more farm supports or Democrats moving heaven and earth to preserve entitlements.

@zhena gogolia: But the normie has concerns, correct? That’s what we need to see. The cultists aren’t ever going to change.
The following isn’t responsive to any point you made here, but it’s related, and I think it should be more widely internalized among despondent Dems: People who aren’t Trump cultists kept right on complaining about the economy after the election and after the inauguration, even before Trump’s antics made things worse. And now they’re getting even more anxious due to those antics.
Some Dems told themselves the Biden economy was great and the complaints about it were because people were brainwashed by media bias against Biden and Dems. There’s a kernel of truth there; the media did yap about the possibility of a recession constantly and did not often report on the full-employment economy, etc. The media is wired for the GOP in numerous ways; that is and has been true for decades.
All that said, people really were feeling a lot of economic pain during Biden’s term, and that influenced the election — in an inexcusably stupid way! But for me, at least, it’s encouraging that there’s been no broad turnabout in public opinion about the economy and median MSM reporting on it now that Trump’s in office.
That’s because it was a real issue last year, and it’s a real issue now. Outside the cult, Dumbfuck Hitler can’t wave it away. If it doesn’t miraculously turn around — in spite of Trusk & Mump’s aggressive rake-stomping — there’s plenty of reason to hope voters will know whom to blame.

Reality has a way of clarifying your mind. No amount of happy talk is going to help you if you lose your job, 401K, and healthcare. Trump may love dictators and want to emulate them, but he’s too stupid to succeed as a dictator. Every wannabe dictator knows that you reward your own followers and build up a an army of enforcers. Trump is starting by hurting everyone, especially his own base. Are the bankrupt MAGA loving farmers in Nebraska willing to fight for Elon and Trump? Elon and the billionaires are not Warlords with their own mini armies.
The only unknown in this evil is the US army. Will the army help subdue the people, because that’s what it will take for Trump to cement the dictatorship. One of the (many) things that scares me is all this talk of “the voters will throw them out in the midterms” and the like
With the EO to have more control over the FEC, such as Bondi having “authoritative interpretations of the law for the Executive branch” and that any regulatory actions it takes “must be reviewed by the President” before being published sure seems to me to be an obvious effort to make voting anything but MAGA harder
Here’s hoping that the Biden-appointed federal judge (Amir Ali) rules against what they’re trying to do. But then, as with everything, we have the carefully cultivated SCOTUS majority to deal with…

Wall Street has been pushing the ‘solution’ of layoffs and firing to raise stock prices for a quarter for too long. They’ve the majority of investors believing low unemployment and livable wage cause inflation. What they have completely forgotten is the stock market has been floating along on the Ponzi 401K contributions of those FTEs for decades. COVID is what the market looks like when millions of low wage workers are out of work but most companies that have benefits found a way (got government assistance) so they could transition staff to remote and keep them working. There were hiring and wage freezes but those contributions to SS, Fed taxes and their retirement accounts kept coming in.
They are attempting to kill the goose that laid the golden egg of ever flowing cash into the markets. Just so they can live their wet dream of removing the social safety net, living wages, and jobs with benefits and putting into place a serfdom gig economy class. then they don’t have to pay any workers comp, unemployment, social security and/or any benefits at all or follow any labor laws. The Untermenschen will be forced to beg at the factory door every day when the Robber Baron shows up in his SwastiKar and picks the lucky few (white men) who get the privilege of working for next to nothing that day.
Of course they will also be returning to the days when no one had any money to invest and stock price was based on actually producing a tangible asset – not just branding or experiences.
We need the reset anyway and this time there will be no government bailout for the AIGs and Morgan Stanleys who bet on the Musk/Trump economic model of killing everything they touch.

In the previous election cycle the democrats seemed to feel that the best way to consolidate their power was to govern effectively. This was political malpractice because in the real world this is only half of what was required.
After Covid nothing absolutely nothing was more predictable than the fact that the world would be gripped by a period of inflation. This happens anytime the world economy is shut down for a time and then restarted. Usually from war but the cause of the shutdown doesn’t matter as much as the degree to which the economy is globalized. Another highly predictable phenomenon was that the billionaire class would attempt to blame the inflation on government efforts to provide a safety net for the bulk of the population.
Since these two facts were blindingly predictable the job of the governing party was to get out ahead of these issues and forcefully counter them before they became the default conventional wisdom. They squandered the opportunity to do that and here we are.

It was attended by foreign ministers, defense ministers and intelligence chiefs from Jordan, Turkiye, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan released this statement afterwards:

Then Fidan returned to a more central purpose of the summit:
This meeting has been weeks in planning, but it happened to convene shortly after the outbreak of violence in Syria’s northwest that claimed over a thousand lives last week. Fidan spoke to that those events at the end of his statement:
And in other Syria news, Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has been invited to attend the upcoming Syria donors summit in Brussels March 17th. This will be al-Sharaa’s first visit to Europe.
