Kevin would always post pictures of his cat, and if he didn’t invent Friday cat blogging, he sure perfected it.
So here’s my kid’s cat — Pearl. This is from a couple of years ago where she had a stint at our house. That “Smarty Kat” branding is for the toy, not the cat. She’s quite dumb, I’m afraid to report. She’s also a bit of a misogynist (not kidding). Guys are in. Gals, she’s not so certain about.
I’ve learned from Pearl that either indoor cats aren’t super smart, or maybe this particular cat isn’t. Pearl’s never been outside, and her world is the four walls of wherever my kid is living. We always had indoor/outdoor cats at home. They were just hunting and killing machines who roamed the neighborhood at night and came back with pieces of cat claw embedded in their fur from vicious fights. For them, it was a harsh existence that they seemed to crave. For Pearl, anything outside of the front door is a mysterious land of fearful monsters.
That all said, she likes me when I visit because I’m male and I give her good treats.
This is another cross-post from my new place — heymistermix.com. John graciously invited me to cross post here, with the comments off. You’ll need to subscribe to comment. Subscriptions are free, and you can just visit the site to read my stuff. I’ll cross-post some of it here. Kay is also posting there now if you’re interested in her take on things.

Is anyone else following the story of Garbanzo the cat on TikTok?
backstory:
woman fosters a kitty named Garbanzo.
Garbanzo is adopted. Owner bring in boyfriend who abuses Garbanzo.
Owner then dumps Garbanzo at a shelter.
Garbanzo still has the chip in from the woman who fostered her. They call her, and ask her if she’ll take Garbanzo, She says yes.
To see the gradual changes in Garbanzo.
from obviously abused cat, to where she slowly is trusting this woman…some of the videos leave me in tears.

I don’t have anything very specific to share about Kevin. But he was a regular on my daily rounds in the good old Blogroll days. His work on lead and student achievement was exemplary of the positive effects an analyst-pundit could have.

We have four rescue kitties. They get very closely supervised outside time (as in we are within feet of them the whole time they’re out) – too much farm traffic and too many predators for us to just let them wander.

Here’s to Kevin. I read all or nearly all of his Calpundit posts back in the day.

Thanks, mrmix. Good to hear from you again.

@rikyrah: I think I saw the story on Instagram about Garbanzo. Such a sad story but I’m glad the foster mom has the cat back.
I like Granny and Trigger on Instagram too. An older lady(as you might have guessed) talks, sings, dresses up and plays with her cats. It’s filmed by her grandson.
I have two cats who are indoor cats. I don’t want to risk them getting hurt or killed and I have enough to worry about.

Do not let your cats outside alone. That massively shortens their life and increases vet bills. They will be plenty happy on a porch and a simple catio is easy to make
Eric
@b: do you know where I can find some good catio plans? Would love to make one for my kitties…

@rikyrah:
We adopted a two year old cat right after Tunch died. That poor cat had obviously been treated like shit. After coming to trust me, she turned into the sweetest cat.
Currently catless, I have become the Official Catlap of 16 year old Winnie, my son’s once bold and fearless tuxedo.

Thanks Mister Mix for posting this. It feels right to honor Kevin across the blogosphere, maybe it’s blogtopia (that was Skippy the Kangaroo’s coinage).

I’ve seen Kevin Drum memorial Friday Catblogging at 5 sites so far today. It’s sweet. I didn’t always agree with Kevin but I always respected him.
Eric
@catclub: :)
just wondering if anyone had links to some easy or cool catios.
Timill
@Eric: Added some pics of our catio at Bluesky: @timill.bsky.socia
It was built out of some kits (probably for something else) that a friend picked up at auction.
Timill
@Timill: Well, bother. The trailing ‘l’ has disappeared. @timill.bsky.social
Eric
@Timill: thank you! I appreciate that. That is really nice, great space for cats. I love that.
Lily
@Timill: That’s a nice one. And they can go in and out for great satisfaction à la cat.

RIP KD and thanks for everything. Long live Friday Catblogging.
Timill
@Eric: Thank you.
For reference, it’s about 20′ across at the house end by about 30′ deep, and stands about 6′ tall at the eaves. The ridge is defined by “needs to clear the window”, and is probably about 9′ at the house end, falling to about 7′ away from the house.
