The details of the people sent to the prison camp in Venezuela are getting worse and worse they literally are just grabbing brown people off the street and shipping them to a brutal prison because… reasons:
Last month, Jose Franco Caraballo Tiapa, a 26-year old Venezuelan migrant who was seeking asylum in the U.S., showed up to his routine check-in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Dallas, Texas, when authorities detained him, his wife told ABC News.
Ivannoa Sanchez, 22, told ABC News she believes her husband is one of the hundreds of Venezuelan men who this past weekend were sent by plane to El Salvador under the Alien Enemies Act.
hez, the couple crossed the U.S. border in November 2023 and surrendered to authorities. After claiming asylum and being detained for a few days, ICE released them and ordered them to check in routinely with the federal agency.Sanchez said the couple had gone to several of their scheduled check-ins without experiencing any issues. But on Feb. 3, Tiapa was not allowed to return home with his wife despite being scheduled to have his first court appearance in his asylum case in March.
Sanchez provided ABC News with documents that confirmed Tiapa’s scheduled appointment with an immigration judge on March 19.
“He went to his routine ICE appointment and he didn’t come out,” Sanchez told ABC News.
And they won’t stop, and they are ignoring judges orders, and it is terrifying. And I have not heard one Republican say anything.
Remember a while back when we weren’t allowed to call them Nazis?

We’re still not allowed to call them Nazis.
NotMax
Sent to El Salvador, not to Venezuela.
Blatantly illegal action in either case.

I’m mostly too horrified and depressed to even comment these days.
Sincerely hope you’re all holding up.
Ohio Mom
There’s several little fires that need putting out here at Ohio Household and all the while I’m attending to them I’m thinking, “Am I a good German, I’m behaving just as the good Germans did.”
The things I do, calling my Congressmen, contributing money (what I think is) strategically, wearing my pink pussy hat on errands (there are more kindred spirits out there than I imagined), planning to go to the April 5 rally — all seem so puny.
laura
I’m Still Here, Missing, Z, The Lives of Others are each really good movies to see that the Monsters are on Main Street right now. Our neighbors, coworkers, friends and family brought us to this place of depravity, cruelty, bloodthirstiness that will not abate until at least 7 Republican Legislators decide that enough is enough.
Steve LaBonne
@different-church-lady: They’re Nazis. Come and get me for calling you Nazis, you Nazi motherfuckers.

I posted this a few days ago- I have joined Austin Sanctuary Network. I’ll be driving immigrants in danger of deportation to their court hearings in San Antonio. Had a training session last week (immigrants Constitutional rights, how to deal with hostile ICE/CBP, etc). They have sister orgs all over the state, and many reports coming in of brown skinned people being whisked off street corners and into ICE vans. One report was of a young man picked up off the street around noon- by 5 pm he was put into a van and sent to a transfer center at the border. No hearing, no legal representation, no due process.
Los desaparecidos…

Argentina 70’s I think: Desaparacidos. American 2024: Desaparacidos. When do they start throwing them out of the planes into the ocean?

Hoping against hope there’s moves afoot in Congress to convince enough Rs to pull a Jim Jeffords, For those who don’t remember, he was the Senator who announced he was changing from R to I and would caucus with the Ds, which was enough to change the majority in that chamber.

Totally OT (well maybe adjacent considering autocracy) but the “World Without Caesars” in Latin t-shirts are back up for sale through bluesky. Context: Mark Zuckerberg likes to wear a t-shirt that says in latin, “Either Caesar Or Nothing.”

As for what the gov’t is doing here. It’s not deporting. It’s actually restarting the slave trade, right? Grab folks off the street, fuck due process, send them to hard labor camps in a country they’ve never been. So, yeah, the Trump admin can add pro-slavery to their position paper. Right next to pro-cancer I guess.
Sandia Blanca
@Salty Sam: Austin Sanctuary Network is a great organization. Thank you, Salty Sam, for doing this vital work.
Keith P.
Who is to say they’ll stop at non-citizens, too? If Trump gets away with this, his next stage will be declaring certain people’s citizenship “null and void” and *then* ship them to El Salvador.
Professor Bigfoot
@Steve LaBonne: They long since have been Nazis:
Nazi rhetoric: “Vermin!” “Poisoning the Blood of our Country!”
Nazi policies: “MASS DEPORTATION NOW”
Nazi threats of political violence: “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by!”
It’s been said that anger is just fear’s bodyguard; and my anger is enormous right now.
“…you stupid motherfuckers…”
Interesting Name Goes Here
@Ohio Mom: Are you supportive of the causes/people to which you donate or give time to? Do you strongly disapprove of or even hate what is happening right now?
If you can answer yes to both of those questions, then you’re not a “Good German.” Not all of us can FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT the way some would expect people to, and no one should seriously expect that to be the case. For a great deal many of us, The Fight is in getting through any given day with our wits and mental health largely intact.
I would argue that you’re doing your part more than some who would accuse you of not doing enough. You can take a little solace in that.

OK, no snark response: I was overwhelmed with anger and despair after the November election. It took me awhile to find my footing (still working at it, TBH). I realized that trying to fix everything that has gone wrong is impossible for one old man, so I made a decision to pick ONE issue that I am passionate about, and focus on that.
As I have worked alongside Mexican immigrants my entire adult life (and have found them to be some of the hardest working people I’ve ever worked with), it was an easy decision. It’s bringing me a real sense of being part of something bigger than myself.
And, for @Steve LaBonne: , this action came about through my recent membership in Society of Friends.
Salty Sam
@Sandia Blanca: have you worked with them ?
columbusqueen
@Keith P.: Exactly. I’m genuinely worried these Nazi fucks will start encouraging cult idiots to turn people in for wrongthink, in which case I’ll be a goner thanks to my creepy FIL.

@Salty Sam: I ❤️ Quakers!

All the things the US has accused other countries of doing – in the past. When will this hit the international news? What news media is going to even discuss it?
Captain C
@Professor Bigfoot: It’s been blatant at least since Gingrich and his Contract On America campaign in 1994.
Matt McIrvin
@TS: It’s all in the international news media and in US news media, to the extent that they can access facts. It’s just that they cover it in this normalizing way. Trump is proud that they’re disappearing people. They want everyone to know it–they just claim that these people are dangerous criminals.
Ohio Mom
@Salty Sam: During the first Trump term, I did the same thing, realized I needed to focus on onet issue and decided my issue was disability rights.

So here’s a point of… not exactly light and hope, but a reminder that the youth are not all lost.
So, one of the best parts of my weeks is taking my son to his Scout meeting. The organization formerly known as the Boy Scouts, now Scouting America, has gone through a lot of growth and change the last decade or two. Coming out of the horrific abuse scandal and bankruptcy, the organization is doing a lot better.
And now for something really cool:
One of the young ladies going for her Eagle Scout rank is doing her service project by organizing donations to a local charity Rahab’s Sisters. Check them out here

Yes, the time is dark and dreary. Much evil is being done, but to quote an actual Christian, Fred Rodgers, “Look for the helpers.”
Keep fighting.

@Keith P.: There was an American citizen, born in Chicago, picked up off the streets of Berwyn, IL while he was going around applying for jobs. They took his wallet, detained him for 10 hours, then let him go without any records of the encounter and no money in his returned wallet.
And since they don’t have any problem detaining American-born citizens, and they’re not willing to give us a list of the people they took on the planes, there’s no reason on earth to believe that there are no citizens among the disappeared.

So, the World Cup is happening in the USA, Canada, and Mexico next year, and before the midterms. Does anyone think that TCFG’s ICE and other would-be gestapos will mellow out for the duration, and for that matter will His Destructiveness be able to stop messing with our closest neighbors long enough to pull off a co-hosted tournament which pretty much the entire fucking world will be watching?
I’m noticing no one in the sporting press seems to be talking or writing about this (or if so, I haven’t seen it).
(edited to put in the correct acronym)
gene108
@Gretchen:
Since ICE was formed there have been several dozen reported cases of U.S. citizens being deported. Around 70-75 cases over the last 10-15 years from what I’ve read.
This was back when ICE had some constraints, and mistakes were made. People were misidentified.
With the shackles off there will be U.S. citizens getting deported.
The bigger threat is the lack of record keeping by this administration. There’ll be no record of the person being deported. If they aren’t sent to the prison in El Salvador, and can contact their people here they might be able to get enough documents to sent to them to re-enter the country.
Also, I think the reason the DOJ can’t provide a list or count of the people they shipped to El Salvador is because there probably is no list or record. These are the same people who separated families, but didn’t keep any track of which kids belonged to which parents.

To your excellent list of movies I’d add The Official Story and Chronicle of an Escape, both from Argentina. The first is about a middle class woman in B.A. coming to terms with the origin of the daughter she and her husband adopted, and how that adoption came to be, admitting that her eyes were closed. The second is just what the title says, based on the true story of four men, one of whom had a friend who was tortured, …
Death and the Maiden is an adaptation of a play by Ariel Dorfman, in which we see the fallout from the perspective of one of the victims.
Buenos Aires 1985 and, from Chile in 2012, No present those societies emerging from their dirty wars.

So the Scouts are going back to where they were when I was a member back in the 60s. I’m glad to hear it.
I read about the LDS taking over BSA when my sons were in Cub Scouts but the Pack didn’t follow all their rules and neither did the local Council to the best of my knowledge. We were insulated from the craziness.

@TS: It has already. BBC, Al Jazeera, El Pais, AP, Euronews, and Reuter’s are among international outlets reporting on this in the last day or two.
Sandia Blanca
@Salty Sam: Not personally, but our pastor has been meeting with them and attending some of their trainings. We just had 1000 of their “know your rights” cards printed up for members of our congregation to carry/share
P.S. Miss Pearl (the cat) is doing great!

@gene108: That’s why we need to insist that there are complete flight manifests with the names and identifying information about all the people on the planes, so we can start checking about whether these people are citizens, visa holders, green card holders. None of this spiriting anonymous people out of the country never to be heard from again.

@prostratedragon:
The attack of birthright citizenship is something new for the Republicans attacks on the (4th and) 14th amendments.
Probably due to Trump’s aligning the Republican party with white nationalist goals.
Republicans long wanted to reinterpret the 4th and 14th amendments. Their legal scholars feel the landmark cases of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s expanding civil rights interpreted those amendments too broadly.
They’ve been working to erase those decisions for decades.
TS
@Matt McIrvin: I’ve hardly seen a mention down under & it is very normalised, no mention of people disappearing.

@Lobo: What says they haven’t already started tossing people out of planes.
chemiclord
@Ohio Mom: There’s a point that one person can’t do much more than performative measures. The public as a whole has to rise up, and unfortunately that’s never going to be fast enough, and we’re never going to be pushed to that point faster than we want to be.
Keep up the fight, and keep hoping. That’s all I’ve got.
lowtechcyclist
@Parfigliano:
Indeed. At this point, there’s absolutely no way to know whether they have or haven’t. If they don’t even let us know who was on the plane, there’s no way to know who did or didn’t arrive at the third-world hellhole of a prison they got sent to. (Like we can look down on third-world hellholes anymore. Fuck and damn.)
