    Since this can’t be discussed directly on Mistermix’s post, a note here instead.

    You know those “spaghetti models” you see on the weather report during hurricane season? The ones that show 20 possible storm tracks based on 20 different models? Sometimes all but a couple line up pretty close to one another: “yup, somebody in east Texas or Louisiana is going to get real unlucky!” And sometimes they look like an ungodly mess, with 75% showing curly-q’s in the Gulf of Mexico, and the rest showing tracks all over the Atlantic basin.

    Well, if T—-p is really serious – and it looks like he may be – about testing out some acts of aggression in the Western Hemisphere, I am telling you that what happens in reaction is like that second set of spaghetti models. A bunch of previously unthinkable things could happen, including –
    – mass protests in the US
    – active blocking of the US military by masses of civilians
    – invocation of the insurrection act in the US, with orders to fire on civilians
    – senior military officers refusing to follow orders
    – governors announcing that their States nor their citizens may be used
    – States siding with Canada (or Mexico)
    – States asking US troops to switch sides
    – a successful impeachment and conviction
    – a coup
    – European NATO troops facing off against U.S. troops

    Or none of the above, and T—-p is successful.

    Aside from mass protest, the one big recommendation I have is that if T—-p is deadly serious, agitate for a Joint Declaration by Congress that Canada / Mexico / Greenland (Denmark) / Panama are sovereign countries as to which no military action is authorized. Less than 5% of US people support T—-p’s bellicosity towards Canada, so even some GOPers might break ranks. That would give the military and the courts the clear authority to refuse illegal orders and halt activities.

    I hate that we’ve come to this point, and hopefully this is all bluster and bluff,but if it isn’t, We the People are not without power, and just about anything is within the realm of possibility.

    The Bezos WaPost reports that the NASA astronauts splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico.

    The Sulzberger Kahn FTF Vichy Times reports they landed off the coast of Florida.  On the Gulf Coast.

    They even included a map of the coast with a big arrow (capsule landed here) but did not label the body of water.

    I did not see any news of the splashdown on a quick scroll through the LA Times.  Wrong coast, I guess.

    A contractor for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and many other U.S. government agencies has developed a tool that lets analysts more easily pull a target individual’s publicly available data from a wide array of sites, social networks, apps, and services across the web at once, including Bluesky, OnlyFans, and various Meta platforms, according to a leaked list of the sites obtained by 404 Media. In all the list names more than 200 sites that the contractor, called ShadowDragon, pulls data from and makes available to its government clients, allowing them to map out a person’s activity, movements, and relationships.

    The entire list [PDF] covers far more than the usual social media services used by billions around the globe. It also targets lots of off-the-beaten internet path sites, like services catering to furries, car owners (Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen, Subaru, Stellantis, and General Motors are all on the list), bodybuilders, book readers, users of multiple dating sites, house hunters, porn watchers, and tech-ish browsers who might use sites like YCombinator (a.k.a., the home of HackerNews) and Github. Also on the list (somewhat surprisingly): TruthSocial and Rumble, sites largely known for catering to Trump and his white nationalist buddies. (Signal is also targeted, but it’s unlikely anything useful is being harvested from that service.)

    It may not just be foreign residents or undocumented residents being subjected to this form of surveillance. As Cox notes in his report, ShadowDragon’s marketing materials point out it can be used to “monitor protests” and suggests it has already has been used for this purpose (with or without a government directive — the text doesn’t make it clear) during Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, DC in 2023. On top of that, ICE has already made it clear it wants to erect a social media dragnet just so it can seek out people who are critical of the agency and its actions.

    U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes in Washington found that Trump’s January 27 order, one of a several issued by the Republican president targeting legal rights for transgender Americans, likely violated the U.S. Constitution’s prohibition on sex discrimination.

    Unfortunately the 2020 SCOTUS case cited is one that the Clerical Six have been itching to overturn.

    OTOH, as usually happens when the anti-trans ban actual have to argued in court, their lack of justification becomes clear. The judge in this case was clearly ticked off at times by the arguments DOJ lawyers were making and by the lack of evidence they presented.

It also includes communication tools like Discord and WhatsApp; activity- or hobby-focused sites like AllTrails, BookCrossing, Chess.com, and cigar review site Cigar Dojo; payment services like Cash App, BuyMeACoffee, and PayPal; sex worker sites OnlyFans and JustForFans; and social networks Bluesky and Telegram. Even relatively obscure social networks are included in the list, such as BeReal.

    ShadowDragon also pulls data from some sites geared towards specific demographics and highly personal interests, such as the social network for Black people called Black Planet or the fetish site FetLife, which 404 Media previously reported.

    The list also includes Roblox [allegedly a site where some attempt to groom children].

    According to U.S. government procurement databases, ShadowDragon’s clients include the State Department, the Army, the Fish and Wildlife Service, the DEA, and, especially, ICE.     @Jay: I’ve always harbored some doubts about how much democracy we actually have, look at the Electoral College for starters.

    Other examples are Foridians voting to allow ex-offenders the right to vote, then Florida finding work arounds to stop them, and then there’s my state, Ohio. We voted TWICE for redistricting to undo gerrymandering and twice the Republicans in the Statehouse ignored us. I imagine we could fill a comment thread, brainstorming other examples.

    But the one thing I was sure of was the First Amendment. We had, at least in my adult lifetime, freedom of speech. Mostly because the Powers That Be knew they weren’t going to listen to us, it was a safety valve releasing steam.

    But now I am thinking that may be on the way out.

    @New Deal democrat: The moment Trump actually announces that he’s going to attack Canada, support for doing so will rise above 40%, because it will have become Trump’s position. And then, at some point Canada will fight back (why wouldn’t they) and kill some Americans, and the hate will ramp up and we’ll have always been at war with Canada. I think even something that extreme will only have incremental political effects.

    Person A says this, Person B says that, who to believe? If you don’t have background knowledge, it’s confusing.

    I’m more irritated with the people who follow the news and come up with the wrong answers, looking at you, Nader, Stein, and Libertarian voters.

    @Elizabelle: Do love me some marine critters.  I contribute to the Marine Mammal Care Center of Los Angeles.  Marvelous place, and the oceans are not getting any friendlier to our fellow mammals.

    I came across the Moro Bay Rescue Center many years ago (1980 ’s).  At the time, you could wander back among the cages and tanks, get up close and personal with the injured and rescued otters and sea lions.  It was pretty awesome.

    Silver requires regular cleaning, more so in humid conditions, to not become black bars. Other than a magnet, black coins say silver.

    For dress, they are now chrome.

    But, it’s dated. My chevrons are Velcro patches, black and grey. my Flag patch is black and grey, not red and white, we mark with red and white 1″ tape strips, on top of the helmet for the drones, on the right arm for visual, above the bicep. My MOS are just on my dress uniform, in gold braid.

    @Salty Sam:  I think you still can at the MMCCLA, the patients in their swimming pools.  Have not been there since before Covid, but if open, definitely worth a visit.  In San Pedro, on a hill above the Korean Friendship bell.  Parking is easy.
