I’d like to pick this up where we left off in December – when we thought we knew what was coming – and finish what we started.
But with a twist. I’d like to pay special attention to resources that have really stepped up in these past couple of months.
So in this post, I’d like us to:
- Have you guys supply URLs for items that don’t have a link (raw link helpful, simpler to copy)
- Add resources that should be on here
- Remove resources that maybe shouldn’t be on here
- Call out, and add, any resources that have really stepped up
For blogs, can we focus on blogs that are really stepping up and are most relevant in this moment? We don’t need to create the superset of awesome blogs or awesome podcasts.

I would also caution against relying exclusively on alternative media for news. I noticed tend to have their own group think problems.
One thing I’ve notice; for some reason Trump’s and Musk’s relationship with the president of Argentina Javier Milei is never mentioned by left friendly media. Which is curious because Trump’s policies closely mirror Milei’s. The cynical side of me says that’s because Radical Libertarian doesn’t get the clicks like word Fascists, even though Radical Libertarian is bad in its’ own way, as 90% in poverty rate bad. Oh and for some reason Radical Libertarians favors the Spanish-Argentina over the native population, odd that, complete mystery.

I follow several of the resources already listed, but here are two more.

Some of the best political writing you’ll find, both opinion and analysis, is on the “sports blog” Defector. I’m including links to recent politically focused articles that cover ground I’m not seeing anywhere else, or not with the same quality of writing and editing. Jess Piper has been watching Republicans destroy Missouri for decades. When people say, surely they’re not destroying the US economy on purpose, would they? She says they’re following the plan that worked in Missouri:
”Why in the world would anyone want to destroy rural America either by creating conditions to hurt small farmers or close rural schools? Because they want to sell off rural parts to the highest bidder. Because if they can drive people out of rural spaces, or make them so desperate that they’ll accept any job at any pay rate, they can bring in large corporate farms and there is no one to protest the environmental impacts or force them to pay their fair share in taxes.”

@MN Grubert:
(g)Loomis’s grave series *was* good and highly entertaining early on. But it turned into a lot of very poorly done research and nothing but a series of petty asides about pertinent subjects like his hatred of Mountain Dew, etc.
Having said that, one of the other of the Three Stooges there, Lemeaux, was noted for his obits. And I gotta say, I’d swear he did an obit on Lee Atwater, obviously decades after his death, that I can’t find (assuming I’m right and he did one), that’s a masterpiece in sticking a shiv into a dead man who most deservedly deserved the shiv. One thing I always wished they’d do is have some kind of link to all the obits he’s done over the years. I think they did that with the ‘grave’ series but can’t recall.

laura
@WaterGirl: What’s inconvenient about it?
It’s inconvenient (or so it seems to me) because there seems to be a pronounced aversion to hearing opinions from or about Black People on this blog- I would point to the pushback ProfessorBigfoot gets on the regular, that Imani Gandy left, that moments ago Gretchen informed me that if One wanted to hear from Black voices they could seek out a bluesky starter pack. I do not know what else to say about the casual or unknowing racism on this blog other than it just makes me increasingly feel like I should spend my time elsewhere.

@laura: No, please stick around. You aren’t the only one.
WaterGirl
@laura: For what it’s worth, I didn’t see that BlackSky reference from Gretchen the way you did. I saw it as helpful info for BlueSky peeps who want to hear more black voices.
I also don’t see a lot of pushback on Professor Bigfoot recently – it seems to me that has settled down. Do you think I’m wrong about that?
Which is not to say that there isn’t unknowing racism. I’m sure there is.

@WaterGirl:
Pickleball has always been political. The elites at Big Tennis have always tried to marginalize us.
Unfortunately lots of people who call themselves progressives (even Balloon Juice commenters!) refuse to acknowledge our community.
Biden started an outreach to the pickleball community: https://apnews.com/article/jill-biden-election-older-voters-bingo-pickleball-40e6ea0e97990bb10e8827f5d1dc706b but sadly, Harris did not take up the torch. Is that why she got 6,250,000 fewer votes than Biden did just a few years before? Hard to say but worth investigating.

I understand that we’re mostly focused on political news here, but local news is also a problem. (All news being national helps Republicans, since they already have a national “news” source that helps their side.)
It’s not as bad a problem as being in a news desert, but the WaPo is basically my hometown newspaper, so when calls go up to dump them over their atrocious politics coverage and sucking up to oligarchs, I’m in a tough spot. Several areas around me have local or micro news sites or papers, but as far as I can tell Fairfax County doesn’t. So if anyone is aware of one that I haven’t found…

1. Link for The American Prospect – https://prospect.org/
(Personally I bookmark https://prospect.org/topics/david-dayen as Dayen’s posts tend to be more concrete and focused – and the other articles show in the sidebar.)
2. Cory Doctorow’s blog for the tech/economic side https://pluralistic.net/ (balances Delong, and vice versa).
3. Ken White’s feed at bluesky, not quite a blog but certainly an aggregator and commenter, particularly on the legal side where so much is happening. https://bsky.app/profile/kenwhite.bsky.social
Also quite a bit of snark mixed in.
4. And for straight news -even US news – one should include The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/international?INTCMP=CE_INT
Personally I would avoid the opinion sections as that tends here and there toward the insane or the insipid, though rarely both at the same time. But they have a refreshing habit of describing things in forthright terms rather than hinting that their sources are probably lying somewhere down in the 10th paragraph.

Aside from my personal situation, I think how we’re responding to the death spiral of local news would be another worthy topic for discussion. It’s a serious issue for democracy — some campaign professional I was listening to a while back was talking about how it’s one of the reasons why presidential and statewide candidates don’t campaign in as many places as they used to. Without a local paper or news station, it’s hard to figure out who they can contact (if anyone) so people will know that they’re coming. It used to be simple. And part of why Republicans have become more extreme is that they’re all campaigning on Fox, not in their districts.
In addition to that, there’s a lack of reporting on local government, corruption, etc. It’s fine to say the MSM suck, burn it all down, but we need something to replace it, and mostly having nothing isn’t good for us.
WaterGirl
@Delicate Butterfly:
I’m saying I am not familiar with that court case. I am not an attorney and I’m not going to spend a lot of time trying to figure out if that is the ABL that we know and love.

@Delicate Butterfly: You “looked her up” by digging up something from 17 years ago? With a link that says almost nothing? And that’s supposed to be meaningful evidence of what she’s doing now?
Really??

@charon: ooh, thank you. These look cool.
i wish I had a news summary service, a group of 50 friends, each one reads, listens to or watches one of the listed sources, the writes a few sentence summary of the main point.
it’s just too much otherwise, like a full time job for retired people w extra time, people who don’t have to don’t get to work, and people w desk jobs who have any spare time to glance online between other tasks and deadlines.
is there anyone doing such a news summary service that’s valid and gets to the important stuff? I’m told democracy now does.
who do others trust for a quickie news catch up?

@Gloria DryGarden: To some extent, that’s what my RSS reader does for me: gets new articles from a number of sources and shows me the headlines and the first few lines of each. If I choose, I can then open the article in a separate tab and read it at my leisure.
Substacks send me email; mailing lists send me email. Sometimes friends send email…

@Redshift: Thanks, I feel this way too. Every time I re-watch The Wire there’s a part in me dying all over again. I care and think about the real industry often enough. But a series like that has me wallowing.

I’ve cut back on reading the news, but I guess many people are taking measures not to get too overwhelmed.
