Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

I don’t recall signing up for living in a dystopian sci-fi novel.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Books are my comfort food!

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

We are learning that “working class” means “white” for way too many people.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

I have nothing to talk about really, spent the day doing a lot of cleaning, got ready for the work week, had dinner, and watched 1923.

Y’all be good. Lots of bullshit tomorrow, guaranteed.

Here is the account from an American photographer who was at San Luis Talpa in El Salvador as the renditioned Venezuelans were brought in.

REPORTING FROM SAN LUIS TALPA, EL SALVADOR

Holsinger is an American photojournalist based out of Nashville, Tenn.

There has been a 23 year old gay Venezuelan hairdresser, in the US legally, who has gone missing in LA. There is a strong possibility that he is the one heard desperately pleading in the account.

It’s a strange thing to say, but I wish America still had Giuliani and the Kushner boy running foreign policy in eastern Europe and the Middle East. They lacked the willingness to utterly betray Ukraine that Witkoff has brought to his task, along with the imagination to create an alternative reality in the Middle East.

No wonder Putin refused to meet with Kellogg, who probably retains a few shreds of principle and knows enough history to tell Putin when he’s bullshitting.

The three countries, allies of the United States, provided the funds for USAID to spend on low-income countries in a project called Water and Energy for Food, or WE4F.

With the Republican administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cutting USAID’s funding and the bulk of its programs, the Europeans have asked for a refund.

They have not gotten a response.

@YY_Sima Qian: Erdogan posts on Twitter so you might look there to get an idea of what is on his mind. Ironically, the last Istanbul mayor to be arrested and prosecuted was Erdogan himself, in 1998. He’s the type to carry a grudge too.

Istanbul’s ex-Mayor Ekrim Imamoglu also still posts on Twitter, or at least he was posting yesterday after his formal arrest: “I stand tall and will never bow” he stated in a couple hundred-word post. Imamoglu’s CHP party went ahead with their primary yesterday and nominated him for their Presidential candidate. Imamoglu invited non-CHP members to join in the voting.

CHP is the party founded in 1923 by Kemal Ataturk. It ran Turkiye up until 1950. The 52 year old Imamoglu has been its most dynamic leader since he first won election as Istanbul mayor in 2018.

Prosecutors arrested Victory Party leader Ümit Ösdag some weeks ago. This may have been related to the peace opening with PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan but Imamoglu’s arrest doesn’t seem to be related.

Ösdag was a leading opponent of the peace process so that may have played a role in his arrest. Ösdag, who came in a distant 3rd in the 2023 presidential election, split from Erdogan’s coalition partner Devlet Bahceli’s ultra-nationalist MHP in 2021.

If Erdogan is in real ùtrouble he may have just been tbrown a lifeline from an unlikely source: Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu is reported to have let Israeli journalists know that war with Turkiye over Syria was likely if not inevitable. Ankara-based Clash Report posted that story yesterday.

A war with each other is the last thing either Turkiye or Israel needs and it seems unlikely. But some of Imamoglu’s opponents were already calling him a “Zionist agent” so this story won’t help him.

As of last night I hadn’t seen this story reported by Israeli media, but they have so much shit going on over there journalists might not gotten around to the story. Or maybe they figure Netanyahu was just lying and floated the story as a distraction. That is a very safe assumption with Netanyahu who seems to grow more desperate by the day.

    Well, here we are:

    Thomas P (TOM) Logan @TokyoTom2020

Daily Danish newspaper Berlingske in Danish (3/24)) had this warning today: “The Danish government has ended up in the form of hybrid war with the United States” According to Berlingske’s political commentator, Bent Winther, the US is “clearly” escalating. This is emphasized by the upcoming visit, where the United States will send the US Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, the US Second Lady, Usha Vance, and the US National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, to Greenland. “The Danish government has ended up in a form of hybrid war with the United States. So far, they have been speaking very diplomatically. But the United States is clearly escalating,” says Bent Winther. He emphasizes that Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) needs to prepare for the next move: “What do you do if Trump himself lands in Nuuk, or if a Hercules plane with marines comes on a ‘private visit’? It can quickly get out of control,” he says.

@YY_Sima Qian: I wouldn’t take Erdogan’s statements at face value any more than I would take Imamoglu’s at face value. It’s not like one wears a white hat and the other wears a black hat. But you have to start somewhere, and their public statements can be read critically as I think all politician’s statements must be.
