DougJ, Mistermix, and I had talked for a while about a podcast, so we went out and made one. Obligatory:
At any rate, for some bizarre reason, they decided I should be the face and voice of things, I was only allowed to do about fifteen minutes of research on wikipedia of the guest so that I would be asking questions that everyone would understand and not people talking about the audience (which, considering how stupid I can be would be quite a feat).
At any rate, here is the inaugural podcast with a really interesting guy named Nick Carmody, JD, MS Psych, who you can find on bluesky at @nick-carmody.bsky.social, at his patreon (no paywall) https://patreon.com/NickCarmody, and at his substack (no paywall) https://nickcarmody.substack.com/.
BTW, the name of the podcast is Personality Disorder Crisis which DougJ swears is not a personal attack on me and allegedly about the topics we discuss, but I am not sure I believe him. At any rate, here is the first edition, which we did this morning (for me at 7 am, the bastards):
We’ll get better at this as we do more of them. Enjoy.

“BTW, the name of the podcast is Personality Disorder….”
Or maybe “Personality Crisis”?
But confusion about names is pretty much what you’d expect from someone having a personality crisis/disorder.

Thanks, John. I will listen tonight.

I love that the pic of Tunch came up on the BlueSky post for this

It is amazing how fast you’ll get better at it. Looking forward to listening!

Looking forward to listening, even though I don’t do podcasts.

If you click on the “more info” link on the widget, you’ll see the show notes which have a bunch of links to Nick’s work. Also, it’s live on Spotify and Apple Podcasts if you prefer to listen there.

I still think, despite it being a “podcast,” that you should rig up a set just like the one they had for Fernwood Tonight. Who knows, Happy Kine and the Mirth Makers may need a new gig, what with egg prices and all going up.
Also, consider inviting Driftglass and Bluegal for an episode- they’re OG bloggers keeping it real.

New York Dolls. Must be a DougJ thing.

@Baud: Me too. I guess it will be my P/T exercise listening until the last episode of White Lotus comes out.

Holy crap. Just saw it was an hour and a half. I don’t spend that much time for one session on OnlyFans.

Congrats John and the gusy.
I don’t know why, I but prefer watching the on camera versions of my fav podcast. Yeah it’s kinda weird right? I mean point of podcast are to listen not necessarily see the podcasters, but IDK
Not for nothing John, but tell DougJ…HELLO and being a music guy maybe y’all do a music theme ep or two?

About an hour in. I feel like the podcast needs more advertisements.

Haha. I can hear that now.
I think the audio made Cole’s voice seemed like a slightly higher pitch than other times I’ve heard it.

Yes, nicely done John.

I’ll be listening once it moves to itunes, i think? Or else I’ll listen here but can’t wait!

Congrats to you, mistermix and DougJ. That was fascinating. One question, will mm and Doug be participating at all in the future or are they just there to be your woobies? No shame if so, but would love to hear them chime in.

That’s longer than the 55 minutes of a session when I was a mental health counselor. Of course that was behind closed doors and for some (very few but not an insignificant number) clients being behind a closed door for 55 minutes with them felt like far longer. No – far, far, far longer.

Not bad for a first effort, although it sounded a bit like some dudes in a basement. I don’t think the Ezra Klein thing with the subtle intermezzo music would work. You might need a comedy guy, like Lovett is for the Obama Bros. I nominate Baud.

I’ve never been a podcast person but I’ll try listening/watching.
Has anyone seen this updated (as of March) Atlantic article about James Murdoch? Amazing how Rupert enabled both Brexit and Trump. Sounds like a candidate for dad of the year. I’ve never been tempted to watch “Succession” and I think I’ll keep it that way – this level of family dysfunction gives me anxiety.

Considering one of the most popular podcasts is that meathead Rogan, isn’t the stupider the better?

With the population growth and the advent of far better communications we have, like what we are doing here, now, one thing is the context of manhood. It is more difficult for those that feel the need to stand out among the masses, to stand out as the top rung of everyone becomes far more difficult because there are far more rungs to climb. For normal people it just feels a bit more crowded – because they don’t really feel that need to climb to the top to be NOTICED, recognized as the top of the heap.
In regard to djt (in my book shitforbrains…) he is one of the type that NEEDS to be the top of the heap. That need he is of course unable to full fill without a supplied podium or stage as a recognized leader – he is incapable of getting there any other way, as in on his own.

Great name–when I was in high school (early to mid ’70s) the NY Dolls used to come up to Boston and play at a few clubs in the area. Family member’s boyfriend was in a band that usually opened for them, so I and all my friends went to nearly all the shows. Being a messed up teenager already, I can’t say all that led me in a good direction. But I can absolutely say that Johansen was a really nice person. Kane was a weirdo zombie, and Jerry & Johnny were junkies. ETA Syl was also a very nice guy. Ah, those were the days.

@ArchTeryx: My div was the lab division. So any job I was going to get in the private sector would involved my division in some way since all labs under CMS must adhere to the regulations for labs that I was part of the oversight team for.
In fact, the Lab Director portion of my interview was mostly about my time working for CMS and my info/knowledge about lab regulations

Not really. He was a mediocre Dr. who parlayed local TV “news” shows into an Oprah spot. He was always glib, but telegenic and could hit his lines on cue.
He took his TV “fame” and spun it into more TV fame via cameo’s, then went into quackery and woo.

Unfortunately, social media, where our youths reside, is a toxic stew of faux alpha’s.
Martin
@Ruckus: Apropos of nothing, but the best characterization of non-toxic masculinity I think of in media was Waymond in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once.
But Trump needs to be top of the heap not because of toxic masculinity but because his dad convinced his psyche that he’s deep down a loser, and Trump is in this lifelong struggle to prove to himself that he’s not, and no matter what he achieves in life, even when he looks at himself in the White House mirror he can’t help but see a loser, so he goes out and cranks the wheel a little further the next day trying to overcome it. Remember kids, untreated mental illness affects everyone around you.
Martin
@Jay: But as much as that, it’s a MUCH bigger community. Almost anyone can be the best on their block at something, but when your block grows from 20 people to 20,000 to 20,000,000 to 5 billion, and an algorithm that is going to surface those getting the most attention, it becomes easy to feel like you aren’t good at anything. And that’s without anyone faking it.

I like history. You Tube et al keep shoving Nazi apologists into my feeds, and CT cranks.
I am old enough, experienced enough to ID bullshit.
Many young people aren’t.

Don’t know. I watch Animarchy History, Lazerpig, Hardthrasher , et al, and in almost all their vids and podcasts, they open with “I am going to recount for you, some of the most horrific things that people have done to people, but some of you are upset that I use swear words”.

Really enjoyed the podcast, John. Lots in there for me to chew on, especially the insights into addictive behavior. Looking forward to the next episode.

@catclub: Right, but social media puts everyone into that space without people having the intuitive understanding of the dynamic. I as a trained academic can look at that and say ‘oh, that’s an outlier, I can’t reasonaly compare myself to them’ (I don’t always catch myself, but when I do, I can reason through it pretty easily). But most humans are linear thinkers in a world that is decidedly non-linear, and approaching exponential. It’s no wonder we regularly go through these crises.

I listened to the podcast this evening. I really liked it, learned a lot, got a more clear idea of my experience with 2 narcissistic people in my life. That helped.
John, your questions were helpful, especially the one where you asked Nick to explain what he was describing for people who didn’t already understand about the personality disorders. His explanation was really helpful.
I look forward to more episodes.
