Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

People are weird.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

We will not go back.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

No one could have predicted…

Good lord, these people are nuts.

This guy. Be a senator like this guy from Hawaii.

Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) is expanding his blockade to include a total of 300 Trump’s agency and department nominees in addition to several foreign relations bills, Axios reports.

Schatz called on his GOP colleagues, “who he said he thinks are privately panicked and frustrated, to publicly push back against the White House.”

Said Schatz: “You can’t be a senator in private. If you’re going to stand up to the president, people have to see you doing it.”

Bondi will probably give him a loyalty test.

Someone mentioned in an earlier thread a sign that said something like,

“I saw Putin laughing with delight, the day democracy died”

Wow that’s good!  Or bad, but in a good way.  (Simpsons: “he’s bad, but he’ll die, so that’s good.”)

And yes Brian Schatz rocks.  Alas that among BOTH houses of Congress you can count folks like him on two hands.

Thank you for that, David. It bites hard, but hell, this morning I was emailing a young French friend, reminding him that if he comes to the US for his internship, he’d better make sure his papers are all in a row, b/c we’re no longer a hospitable country.

Pam Bondi can go fuck off.  She makes fucking John Mitchell look like a class act by comparison.

@lowtechcyclist:  We are all Martha Mitchell.

Don’t mind a bit seeing the US of Cray Cray as the butt of the world’s jokes.  It is deserved.  (By them.  We are collateral casualties.)

WRT that BBC story:  loved the photo of Chris Stein, Debbie Harry and Clem Burke.

They looked like fashionable citizens of whatever planet David Bowie hails from.

This filthy country could not elect her.  For shame.

We would be sleeping better and not waking up apprehensive if we lived in KamalaLand.

The world would be better off.

Sometimes being an only child sucks. I’ve got 2 parents and a stepparent, and two aunts and two uncles who didn’t have kids all hitting the heavy medical challenges age and I’m not sure I can be POA to 7 people spread across 5 states. Not there yet, but added another today and I can see all but one of the rest is close. Starting to appreciate the pragmatism of the ice floe.

    @Martin:

I was my father’s legal guardian for two years, but never got a POA/Medical POA because he was lucid when a doctor talked to him (he “only” had no short term memory at all).

He was in Florida and I in Washington state. We were not close, never had been, but he had alienated everyone else in the family.

After 2+ years, flying to Florida two, three times a year, with no real authority, I just couldn’t do it anymore and signed him over to a professional guardianship organization.

It’s something you might want to look into. See, in particular, how much oversight/input you would still have; if, for example, you would still be able to make the final decisions but could rely on them for implementation.

@Martin: I’m an aunt to 3 people. I think when I get to the infirm part, where I need help, none of them is going to come forward. I don’t think my sibling would either. Families.

Incredible word choices to hit the rhymes. I love a song like this, with the words reworked to say what needs to be said.

Amazing how artistically so much can be said. This reminds me is many ways of how fantastic Thomas Nast’s cartoons were….very well done
