Bonjour all. I’m dealing with some terrible allergy symptoms and hosting some house guests who just arrived from the U.S. They seem to be capable of entertaining themselves even if I’m a bit under the weather, though:

Reminder: The SAVE Act Is Scheduled for a House Vote This Week

(Those are my parents. I’d put my money on Mom if I were you.)

The main reason I am ducking in here is to remind everyone to call their reps about the SAVE Act, a/k/a the “disenfranchise millions of women” act:

Are you a woman who changed your name when you got married?

Congress is considering a bill that could make it much harder for you to vote.

It would also disenfranchise those of us who live overseas, including military service members. Here’s a suggested call and messaging script from Democrats Abroad that you can use as a starting point for any calls you make:

Calls:

My name is (NAME) and I am a constituent of Representative (NAME). My zip code is XXXXX. I care deeply about my country and my right to vote. I am calling to ask Rep <name> to oppose the SAVE Act. This bill would disenfranchise me because I am not able to register to vote in person and would massively undermine democracy in the United States. Will <name> protect my right to vote?

Message them on social media. Here’s a sample script:

Military & overseas voters rely on mail-in voter registration. The SAVE Act would make it harder for millions of U.S. citizens to vote. @yourrep, reject this attack on voting rights! #ProtectOurVotes

Obviously, strip out the stuff about mail-in registration and talk about proving your citizenship instead if you’re a married woman who changed her name (or married to a woman who changed her name).

That’s what I got. Off to find the parents extra towels (and some butter for the baguettes). Open thread.

    EDIT: I just called his local office, and a person named Angel answered. I like when I call someone and an Angel answers : )

    What a sly way to repeal the 19th Amendment without going through all that messy “consent-of-the-governed” process.

    I await the same sleight of hand to get rid of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments.

    And, oh hell, why not go for the gusto:  get rid of the 1st Amendment while they’re at it.

    @CaseyL: Imprisoning more people allows for slavery.  At a profit to.  Then the prisons could rent out ‘safe’ prisoners with the renters only covering food and housing or such.

    Imprison anyone not white or just who you feel like and they lose voting rights.  Heck might not even be in the country to contest.

    I’d bet that some of our citizens do not like a significant portion of those that live here. For possibly a few reasons, one of which is that they don’t always get their way when there are a lot of other people that think what they want sucks donkey parts. They are losing their power over others and for them that is not good. For the others it seems like it might be necessary.

    A Granite Bay High School history teacher’s lesson featuring Elon Musk and President Donald Trump alongside images of notable fascists has received national attention — earning a response from Musk himself.

    Pictures of the slides feature Musk’s apparent use of a Nazi salute during a speech in January under a photo of Adolf Hitler. The slide, titled “Features of Fascism,” explains militarism and devotion to a leader as two aspects of the political ideology. Another slide titled “Cult of Personality” contains a photo of President Donald Trump at a rally with a crowd of his supporters. Some text on this slide appears to have been blurred out.

    The text on the second slide is the Merriam-Webster definition for a cult of personality. The next bullet appears to have been taken from an older version of the term’s Wikipedia entry, which has since been revised.

    LibsofTikTok, a far-right social media account known for posting clips of public school teachers to spark outrage, tweeted pictures of the slides alongside a Facebook post criticizing the lesson. The post has 24,000 likes as of Wednesday.

    “Students at Granite Bay High School (@GraniteBayHigh) in CA were reportedly shown a presentation by a history teacher showing Elon Musk as a Nazi and Trump as a cult leader. They need to be investigated and defunded,” the post reads. Musk responded to the post saying that he has never committed or advocated for violence, yet “the left has firebombed and shot bullets into my stores and many have advocated for my death.”

    “They are guilty of that which they accuse me,” his post reads. Granite Bay High School principal Greg Sloan sent a message to parents Friday night saying that the situation was being addressed.

    @CaseyL: When I got married for the second time my county issued me a laminated marriage certificate showing my maiden name and my new spouse’s name. It was a big help when I went to Social Security to change my name. I have already re-registered to vote, but that might help others.

    My step-daughter was adopted out of foster care. Proving her citizenship will be quite the challenge.
