Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Via The Independent, Adam Silverman’s old “pal” Seb Gorka had this fascist garbage to spew on Newsmax:

Trump’s counterterrorism czar says Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s supporters could be charged with ‘aiding and abetting’

Donald Trump’s counterterrorism czar Sebastian Gorka claims Americans who don’t support the president’s anti-immigration agenda and deportations policy are “on the side of the terrorists.”

He suggested advocates for Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran father living in Maryland who was mistakenly deported to a brutal prison in his home country, could be prosecuted for “aiding and abetting.”

“It’s not left and right, it’s not even Republican or Democrat. There’s one line that divides us: Do you love America, or do you hate America? It’s really quite that simple,” Gorka told Newsmax on Wednesday.

“We have people that love America, like the president, like his cabinet, like the directors of his agencies, who want to protect Americans. And then there’s the other side that is on the side of the cartel members, on the side of the illegal aliens, on the side of the terrorists,” he added. “And you have to ask yourself: Are they technically aiding and abetting them? Because aiding and abetting criminals and terrorists is a crime in federal statute.”

He’s just asking questions! According to Gorka, all of us evil libtards are disobeying the Great Leader and deserve to be punished for defending a man with legal status here who was sent to a concentration camp in a foreign country after being denied due process

ETA: That Newsmax headline is like looking into another universe: “Media Twists Gang Member into “Maryland Father”

First (11th now?) they came for Ms. Rachel…

A prominent pro-Israel group that doxes people it deems antisemitic is calling on Pam Bondi, the US attorney general, to investigate whether beloved children’s entertainer Ms Rachel is operating as a foreign agent after sharing sympathetic content about children suffering in Gaza.

This is in response to a fundraiser she did with Save The Children. She makes videos for toddlers.

      This is effed up:

“A federal judge in DC told lawyers for migrants in Texas who believed the Trump administration is about to swiftly deport them under the Alien Enemies Act that he did not have the power to pause the deportations, even though he was concerned about the administration’s actions,” CNN reports.

During the hearing, a Justice Department attorney said that while no flights are planned, the Department of Homeland Security said it reserves the right to remove people tomorrow.

“I am sympathetic to everything you’re saying, I just don’t I think I have the power to do anything,” Judge James Boasberg said at an emergency hearing this evening.

He said that, under a recent Supreme Court ruling, only the courts with jurisdiction over the Texas detention center where the migrants were being held had the power to intervene.

I’ve been thinking for a while now with this Garica mess that what started it was Trump watching the movie Sicario, made a fist with his baby hands and said “This is how it’s done” while ignoring the movie was really about how fucked up and pointless the War on Drugs is.

If Trump really wanted to end the drug problem in the US he would put Don Jr into rehab.  No demand, no drug gangs.

FFOTUS and his Deplorables are counting on that.

If accounts that the dramatic tarriff impact on the reduction of imports at shipping ports and steep dropoff in demand for truck transports of said goods are true, normal people walking while oblivious of Trump’s negative impact on their own quality of life are about to have a rude awakening soon as they visit stores and find goods they are long accustomed to being cheap and plentiful being scarce and expensive.

I also agree with BJers who are recently commenting that labeling Trump a “tyrant” rather than a “fascist” will resonate much more strongly and effectively with normal folk – a fascist is someone from long ago in a history book, a tyrant is someon everyone has experienced personally  in their own lives, and will provoke a far more visceral reaction.

She started her show because her son had a speech delay and she didn’t find many resources to help him.  She does a lot of speaking slowly, showing how her mouth moves to make a sound. She also does other toddler content like colors and shapes. Real political stuff.

I’ve watched hours and hours of her show because my grandson also has a speech delay, and loves her.

      Heh. Per RawStory:

“’Complete meltdown’: Top Pentagon staffers fired as ‘chaos’ engulfs Hegseth’s inner circle.”

An exodus of top staffers reporting directly to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is apparently roiling the Pentagon as part of a growing investigation into potential leaks.

Politico reported Friday that three senior Pentagon officials have now been fired as part of the leak investigation: Hegseth senior advisor Dan Caldwell, deputy chief of staff Darin Selnick and Colin Carroll — who was Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg’s chief of staff — have all been officially terminated. And Joe Kasper, who was Hegseth’s own chief of staff, is now leaving the Pentagon for a separate job in the Pentagon.

With these staffing changes, the top United States military official is now without a chief of staff, a deputy chief of staff and a senior advisor, less than 100 days into his tenure. An unnamed “senior defense official” suggested that Hegseth made poor choices for who to trust in his inner circle, with another source saying there would likely be more “chaos” to follow in the coming days.

And yeah, letter or no, what they’re demanding in general from Harvard — and others — is unacceptable.  That they’re holding the 75-plus-year scientific research partnership between the federal government and US universities hostage to their childish and bigoted demands is both insulting to academic inquiry and deeply detrimental to the country’s welfare.

      @Ohio Mom:

Most humans have a breaking point.

Losing your country to a pompous arrogant jackass (even one elected to the highest office) is not in the makeup of this country. We supposedly have road blocks in place to stop this. But Angus King has really hit the nail on the head, that we are not that far away from it happening or at least having it screw this country right into the ground.

We have to demand to and from our congress critters that we are falling into deep, deep shit and it is going to take a lot to pull us out of the free fall that ends in that pile that none of us want to end up in.

On my part, I worked and paid into SS for basically almost 60 years so that I’d have a decent amount every month. And I do. But if they destroy Social Security (and everything else) ALL OF US will be in deeper than most can imagine. A country is no longer just a place where someone lives. It is where food is grown, it is where wages are earned, it is where old farts retire, it is where children are educated so that the workforce can continue to exist and food can be grown and paid for and on and on and on and on. And on.

A society exists because we all work towards the future, making it work, making it better, not towards destroying it. Which is what shitforbrains is doing. He has always wanted more than he has, more than he has ever come close to earning, but his skills to be a normal human are non existent. And his “friends” want it all, control, money, prestige, power – everything. And in a democracy that is the largest and worst kind of thievery that exists.
