Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

“A king is only a king if we bow down.” – Rev. William Barber

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

How stupid are these people?

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Overnight Open Thread: From Tea Party to Drone Party

Welcome, night owls and early risers. My posts might be hit or miss this week, I am staring at a very, very busy week. I’ll do my best as your fill-in DJ.

Let’s get the party started:

Okay, that’s a pretty elaborate history lesson.

Apr 18, 2025

On the evening of April 18, 2025, Boston commemorated the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere’s legendary Midnight Ride, a pivotal moment in American history with spectacular Drone Show about the history of American Revolution..

And then there is Elle Cordova, who is a genius wordsmith, and I could lose an entire day watching her short videos. Always clever and thought-provoking. Here she is with her take on Hank Green’s thoughts on the Big Bang.

Jul 15, 2023

A stitch with Hank Green (‪@hankschannel‬), turned into a nursery rhyme like poem about the Big Bang, the origins of the universe, and other cosmic questions.

Blue flower in a vase: Struggling doesn't mean you are failing

I should be in bed, but the AVS and the Nuggets are playing. Crazy. AVS in OT and Nuggets down by 2…

Wide open thread…

And the Nuggets went down. Series now tied at 2.  That is your Sport Center update for the night.

Elle Cordova is SO damn smart, talented (excellent singer/songwriter/guitar player, too), and funny. Her short videos are brilliant.

    That drone show was impressive.
Sends just the right message in the right moment.

Linked to this (incongruously bouncy) music quite some time back. Title of it, at least, seems timely.

How the heck can that series be done with game 4 and my Cavs don’t play their game 2 until Wed?

Until just now with this vignette, I’d never heard of Jean Malin or of the “pansy craze” in pre-code Hollywood, although I’ certainly noticed many examples of the latter. Didn’t know it as a thing with a name.

A search on “Jean Malin” on ytube brings several videos, including of this popular song: “I’d Rather Be Spanish [Than Mannish]”

All Rise News is a new substack from Adam Klasfeld and Tim Mak that will report on actions against the Horror.

@prostratedragon: I like Klasfeld generally, but I dislike that so many people are taking a bit of success on Substack as an invitation to reinvent the wheel. New voting rights orgs when the ACLU, League of Women Voters and Mark Elias are right there already doing that work*; new news aggregators when others have already started and seem to be gaining momentum (like the Contrarian). How will the opposition unify when everyone is unable to even support infrastructure already in place?

    * LWV voter registration (and youth registration specifically), ACLU and Elias voter defense litigation.

One of my first jobs in Boston was aboard a tugboat converted into office space in the Fort Point Channel, right next to the Tea Party Ship where they’d have reenactments. I’d hear a splash, some gunshots, and fife and drum playing afterwards every day.

Glad to see Boston with the drone show and celebrations. Taking back some real tea energy.

I know Elle somewhat personally from talking to her after her shows while she was based in the Twin Cities. Good to see her get more recognition for her talents.
