Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

This chaos was totally avoidable.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

The words do not have to be perfect.

People are weird.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

In my day, never was longer.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Today’s rally 3:30pm Mountain time.
Scheduled 3:00 to 5:00

A bit smaller today, but still some(?) thousands. There is a large flat area up at the top, so people that can’t be seen in the photo. Lots of horn honking!

Thousands is a great turnout for Denver.

Were there any other rallies elsewhere today?  Anybody else attend?

There were rallies scheduled all over in the Boston area. I was at the one in Merrimac, Massachusetts, a small town and it was a small rally, about 100 people around the roundabout in the town square. I suspect a lot of us came over from Haverhill. It was a spirited crowd, more attempted chanting this time. Lots of supportive honkers. One snotnosed kid on a bike yelling “GO HOOOME!”

Probably the majority of the people there were over 50, as usual. One guy showed up with his bubble-making apparatus when he saw the crowd; hadn’t heard in advance that there was anything going on. There are more rallies this weekend but I don’t think I’m going to be able to attend.

@WaterGirl: there was one in my little CO town. Not huge, but feisty. And a buncha olds (by which, of course, I mean, “slightly older than me”) saying, “Last time I did this was in the 70s”. :)

I had signed up to go to one of the ones in DC (there we at least three) but I couldn’t get away from work. The organizers of the one I signed up for say they have a permit to be on the Mall 24 hours a day until August (and can renew it after that) , so they’re trying to recruit people to maintain a presence.

OT: Oh joy! Our president has appointed Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick (ick) to lead a religious commission consisting of several good Christians.//

“As we defend religious freedom in America, we’re also standing up to religious persecution around the world,” Trump said, acknowledging that Thursday was also the National Day of Prayer.

Patrick will lead the 14-member commission, which includes former United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson, New York Archbishop Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Rev. Franklin Graham and TV personality Dr. Phil McGraw, who lives in Dallas.

“We will carry out the president’s important mission to preserve and strengthen religious liberty in our country,” Patrick said in a statement after the event.

Why do I doubt that the purpose of the commission is the pursuit of religious liberty?

A friend and I went in Bellingham, WA. Somewhat smaller than the weekend protests, but it was a work day. Lots of enthusiasm though and the majority of cars that passed honked in support.

@Baud: That was enjoyable – but was there really money in the budget for bonuses to ICE (almost $1 billion) – So people now have money on their heads?

@Josie: Any non-Christians on that committee or is defending religious freedom only related to one religion?

    @TS:

The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday marked up its part of the reconciliation package, which included $8 billion, available through fiscal 2029, for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to hire 10,000 new agents. It would receive an additional $858 million for signing and retention bonuses. Republican lawmakers are looking to pay for the hiring surge by charging an unprecedented asylum application fee of $1,000 and a $550 for work visa fee for some immigrants.

I got stuck at the Chevy dealership for 2+ hours today so missed most of this.  Was driving home down Lincoln and there were still some folks left with signs.

Right there next to the damn near fulltime “Secularism for Iran” protesters.  They’re always there at the corner of 14th and Lincoln.
