Good evenin’, y’all.
AL, glad to see you back full time (?)!

Love the t-shirt, love the cat.

Glad to see you posting A.L.

Love the cat.
Just a question. What does // mean? I see it a lot in posts and am clueless.
prostratedragon
@They Call Me Noni: A fake markup tag that won’t confuse the html formatting. Unadorned, means snark, or words can be added, like “//snark.”
Baud
@They Call Me Noni:
Snark.
Jay
@They Call Me Noni:
It means the commenter/poster meant the text as snark.
WTFGhost
I don’t recognize the critter in the “The Horrors Persist” t-shirt, but I like the concept. I’d replace the critter with my unshaven, barely groomed face wearing it’s best scowl, e.g., one evoked by “I read something Vance said, and it stinks – I mean, there is actual synesthesia happening, I feel an unpleasant odor scorching my nostrils while rage is carried through all working mental passageways, and I remember that somehow or another, not only will I dance on their metaphorical/political grave, I will by-golly try to help bring it about.”
My scowls can be extremely expressive.
Anyway: “Go critter!”
CHETAN MURTHY
@WTFGhost: opossum?

What is the critter on Soonergrunt’s t-shirt? I guess a possum.
WTFGhost
@prostratedragon: Hm. I always preferred the much longer (mode=annoying_younger_brother)(sarcasm) Oh, so you think // is a decent idea!!! (/sarcasm)(/mode) method, but, I guess // works.

@CHETAN MURTHY: I’m afraid I’ve used too many Perfectly Legal Herbal Remedies to say anything other than “no thanks, I’m trying to eat more vegetarian, to see how it affects my cholesterol.”

@WTFGhost: So that’d be a “no” to “care to try one of these squirrel-brain sandwiches?”

Gotta go. The horses are running the Derby (right across the river) so I gotta watch. Riders up!! Gin & tonic time.

I am at the point where I feel like the best response that each of us, as a matter of style and presentation, can affect, is an air of extreme unbotheredness. If FFOTUS voters want to kick themselves in the dick, be my guest. I’ll hold your beer.
They just want to trigger libz.

@rikyrah:
The Australian federal election just smashed our version of right wing fucknuckles. Just smashed them. Looks like the ALP will have over 80 seats in the House of Representatives. We took seats off the Tories everywhere, including in their heartland.
Greens also lost seats.
The election was like a ‘war time’ election, where electorates cleave into the known rather than risk something with a gamble.
However the ALP ran a very good, disciplined campaign against a leader and a Party that had a very ‘off putting’ affect and put forward some very unpopular policies like nuclear power, sacking federal public servants and complaining about schools and teachers that ‘indoctrinated’ the young.
I leave it to your imagination to work out what they meant. The electorate understood their offer well. Assisted in no small part by the antics of trump in the US.
Baud
@Aussie Sheila:
You’re welcome.
Suzanne
@Baud:
Yes. And they can be a source of our amusement.
I mean, I enjoy dumb comedies from time to time.

Sovereignty won the Derby. Track was very sloppy as all it has done here is rain. Gin & tonic is good and said to tell Baud “hi backatcha”.
We did go to the Derby once in either 1996 or ’97. Best people watching day ever.
Nukular Biskits
Much needed rain passed through last night and today here on the MS Gulf Coast.
Couldn’t do any yard work but ain’t complainin’. I needed a break.

@Old School: Kind of validates the whole idea of art criticism, doesn’t it?
Baud
@Suzanne:
TBH, I think sometimes people go overboard with that. They are monsters, after all.
Aussie Sheila
@Baud:
Heh! Social media assisted us well in this campaign, and was well utilised. People here just ‘get’ what trump stands for and they can’t stand it.
Completely against the cultural ‘grain’.
Nukular Biskits
@They Call Me Noni:
Ms. Biskits asked me about the Derby after we saw an NBC promo for the race. I told her I had never understood what was so special about the Derby now that we’re no longer in the horse ‘n’ buggy age, then it dawned on me: People go to watch other people.
Geminid
@CHETAN MURTHY: I think consumption of squirrel brains has declined in Appalachia since an alert was put out that they can carry a prion disease similar to “Mad Cow Disease.” At least, I hope it has.
Suzanne
@Nukular Biskits: People go to have collective experiences, yeah? I mean, I don’t understand sports team fandom, I certainly don’t understand why people would pay hundreds of dollars to sit in the cold on uncomfortable seats to watch games. But…. there’s joy in doing things with others.
I took Spawn the Youngest to run a “kids marathon” this morning (LOL not a marathon, only one mile). We could certainly have just run a mile on local streets or at the high school track. But… it’s more fun to share the experience. And get shave ice afterward, of course.
Jay
MAGA will say, support and do anything to “own” the Libs,
Even to the point of destroying their economies, jobs, housing to the point where soon, they won’t even be able to “rent” the Libs.
Saw a forecast that said between 80% and 90% of incoming cargo’s will wind up in large cities, so while the shelves may be bare in some areas of a Seattle Walmart, the Oroville Walmart will be closed.
Suzanne
@Baud: At the risk of reopening the debate about calling FFOTUS voters evil….. I think we would be wiser if we accepted that there’s a chunk of the electorate — probably not big, but statistically significant — who voted for FFOTUS who aren’t monsters, who aren’t evil. They’re often incoherent and mercurial and maddening. But building a coalition sometimes sucks.
But…. I am an asshole, and I will absolutely roll around in schadenfreude when the leopards eat a nice face snack.
Geminid
@Aussie Sheila: I’m glad to see that the hard work you and and others put in was rewarded. Congratulations!
And I’m curious: I understand that half of Australia’s Senate seats were contested yesterday. How does that chamber look?

I’ve never been a spectator of any kind of “sportsball” … except when my kids played soccer. But they’re grown now so I share little in common with my coworkers who want to talk about sports all day long.
To each his/her own, I suppose.

I don’t put a lot of stock in the “outrage X is a distraction” theory, and even less in the “don’t fall for it “ advice — Trump just doesn’t put that much conscious thought into anything. However, I’ve known enough abusers to know that if our White House press staff got their act together (lol I know) and asked him literally “Have you actually done anything you said you would do easily? Yes or no?” he would literally invade Canada. People like him will do anything not to answer that question.
Dorothy A. Winsor
@CHETAN MURTHY: Is there a difference between a opossum and a possum?
Aussie Sheila
@Geminid:
Senate results will take a while to count. My gut tells me there will be a ‘centrist’ Senate. The Greens will do better there than they did in the Lower House. But so will the One Nation Party, a sort of trumpist outfit that arose ‘avant- la lettre’ as they say.
Lower House could be 85 ALP seats.
A truly excellent result.
Albo was always very good in the close political clinches . He cut his political teeth in ALP factional warfare in NSW in the ‘mid ‘80s through to mid ‘90s.
An excellent training ground for dealing with arseholes and fucknuckles.
Baud
@waspuppet:
Asking them questions wouldn’t yield anything. IMHO the bigger problem is the hack deficit. What kills us is how the punditry talks about us. As a group, they just don’t treat Republicans with derision.

yup, everything St Upid touches dies.

@Jay:
What happened in Singapore?
They Call Me Noni
@Nukular Biskits: It’s a month of parties for a two minute race. Seriously. Honestly, the best time to go to Churchill Downs is any time other than Derby or Oaks which was yesterday when the fillies ran. Place is packed to the gills those two days and locals have been priced out of attending which is a shame.
Aussie Sheila
@rikyrah:
Yes! Dutton losing his seat was the cherry on top. That might teach our own fucknuckles not to ‘copy’ US Republican themes and tactics here. It simply goes against the political and cultural ‘grain’.
The LNP (think Republicans) will cycle through at least three leaders before they get their act together if history is any guide.
I’m loving it.
They deserve everything they got.
Which is nothing.

They Call Me Noni
@Suzanne: I’m with you. I know the Democrats are a big tent party and I hope they join in. I just don’t want them sitting at my table. I want them to sit at the traitor tables and think about what they’ve done. I do not understand in this day and age how you can be so ignorant of the basic facts. Is it on purpose or are they just too damn lazy to any kind of research? My general feeling is “fuck Trump and fuck you for voting for him”.
Sorry, not sorry. If J6 didn’t convince you he is horrible I think the most civil I can be to you is to ignore you.
Baud
@Jay:
That’s good, I assume.
Raoul Paste
@Baud: “He’s stuck in this country with you”
That made me smile.
Jay
@Baud:
Yes/no. S’pore is not really a democracy, but the PAP are good and adaptive economic managers, so they should do well in the Trade Wars.
They Call Me Noni
@Nukular Biskits: Good comparison. They have parades and all that stuff. There’s and air show and Thunder Over Louisville which is huge. The biggest fireworks display in the US. It was cancelled this year because of the flooding. There’s a steamboat race, a bed race and lots and lots of parties. And waayyy too many people for my liking any longer but it does bring a lot of revenue for Louisville and the surrounding areas.
They Call Me Noni
@persistentillusion: Have been to that and the Brickyard race too. You are correct in that there is no shortage of inebriated folks.

I find it fascinating in a creepy way that the White House is reposting an AI image of Trump dressed as the pope. It’s only a matter of time before we get pictures of him in his Batman underoos.

The most exciting part was seeing a rabbit hop out onto the track in front of us during the race. AFAIK it escaped unharmed.

Well, yes. Laziness. But also just extreme self-interest. And by that, I don’t mean “self- interest” as rational efforts to forward one’s position. I mean only being interested in oneself and one’s own feelings. Navel-gazing.

@kindness: I like opposums. Poor little guys lead very hard, simple lives, eating bugs. And everyone hates them because of their fierce faces which is no indication of their actual behavior. They eat bugs and slugs for a living.
I had a friend years ago who lived in a wrecking yard, and they rescued a baby oppossum that she bottle fed and raised. Sweetest little critter imaginable, but not very bright.
persistentillusion
@Omnes Omnibus: We were in the 4th row in the 4th turn. On hot race days, our skin would be grey from all the tire debris. Could see the Start/Finish line and back into the third turn. Great seats for a race I wasn’t very ineterested in.

Growing up in the South, I’d seen plenty of possums in the wild and, unfortunately, as roadkill.
It wasn’t until I was on a weekend break from work in SoCal that I encountered someone who had one as a pet.
Odd choice to me, as they’re not exactly cute critters but he seemed a well-behaved gentleman.
Nukular Biskits
@Suzanne:
LOL. With tweaks, describes most other “sportsballs”.
Jay
@Aziz, light!:
Opossums are the only native Marsupial species in the America’s with 9 subspecies.
Downunder has 100’s of species and subspecies. 15 are “called” possums. Inland from here, is the “Possum” graveyard. It’s on the CNR tracks, just before the bridge over the Chilliwack River. The upper valley has a large Opossum population and they apparently use a trail nearby that crosses the railroad tracks.
Apparently their defense mechanisms of hissing, playing dead, then leaping airborne at the last minute does not work well with trains. Bones, teeth and skulls are scattered all over the tracks.
They Call Me Noni
@Nukular Biskits: Yup. Younger people stuff.

That’s bullshit.
The US intel and defense communities do incorporate OSINT.
Adam could speak to that more than could I but that categorical denial is an absolute lie.
WaterGirl
@Nukular Biskits: It would be foolish not to!
But didn’t the FBI director spout that same bullshit re: Jan 6?
Jay
@Nukular Biskits:
While the US Military does incorporate tons of OSINT, one would expect that they would “vet” and confirm any OSINT found on the web before targeting along with OSINT sources.
They do not.
Make a seemingly plausible “Houthi Base” claim on the Dead Bird site, with grainy photos and geotagging and the the US will send several millions of dollars of ordinance to kill a family of 4 and destroy their $275 mud hut.

There was a group of us who went because when are you ever going to see the Rolling Stones at Churchill Downs again? Alice Cooper opened and it rained like crazy up until Mick and the boys took the stage. No pyrotechnics though because of the horses they stable at the track. It was quite the evening.

Cheapest way to get large quantities of stuff to sell across oceans is by ship. And a big enough port to put a large freight ship (or a lot of large freight ships) into is going to have a not insignificant sized population. Say Los Angeles or San Francisco. And a lot of that cargo from China (if it continues….) is going to be trucked/railroaded from there eastward. Ever seen an automobile cargo ship? Holds a LOT of vehicles.
