Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I don’t recognize the critter in the “The Horrors Persist” t-shirt, but I like the concept. I’d replace the critter with my unshaven, barely groomed face wearing it’s best scowl, e.g., one evoked by “I read something Vance said, and it stinks – I mean, there is actual synesthesia happening, I feel an unpleasant odor scorching my nostrils while rage is carried through all working mental passageways, and I remember that somehow or another, not only will I dance on their metaphorical/political grave, I will by-golly try to help bring it about.”

My scowls can be extremely expressive.

      Anyway: “Go critter!”

      About the shirt:

The design features a charming opossum, captured in a whimsical sketch style, standing defiantly with outstretched arms. Its wide-open mouth adds a touch of humor and personality, drawing attention to the playful yet resilient attitude portrayed. Surrounding the opossum, the phrase “The Horrors Persist But So Do I” is emblazoned in bold, red lettering that arcs above and below the character. This typography complements the animated nature of the opossum, creating a balanced visual harmony.

      @rikyrah:

The Australian federal election just smashed our version of right wing fucknuckles. Just smashed them. Looks like the ALP will have over 80 seats in the House of Representatives. We took seats off the Tories everywhere, including in their heartland.

      Greens also lost seats.
The election was like a ‘war time’ election, where electorates cleave into the known rather than risk something with a gamble.

However the ALP ran a very good, disciplined campaign against a leader and a Party that had a very ‘off putting’ affect and put forward some very unpopular policies like nuclear power, sacking federal public servants and complaining about schools and teachers that ‘indoctrinated’ the young.

I leave it to your imagination to work out what they meant. The electorate understood their offer well. Assisted in no small part by the antics of trump in the US.

I took Spawn the Youngest to run a “kids marathon” this morning (LOL not a marathon, only one mile). We could certainly have just run a mile on local streets or at the high school track. But… it’s more fun to share the experience. And get shave ice afterward, of course.

I think we would be wiser if we accepted that there’s a chunk of the electorate — probably not big, but statistically significant — who voted for FFOTUS who aren’t monsters, who aren’t evil. They’re often incoherent and mercurial and maddening. But building a coalition sometimes sucks.

I don’t put a lot of stock in the “outrage X is a distraction” theory, and even less in the “don’t fall for it “ advice — Trump just doesn’t put that much conscious thought into anything. However, I’ve known enough abusers to know that if our White House press staff got their act together (lol I know) and asked him literally “Have you actually done anything you said you would do easily? Yes or no?” he would literally invade Canada. People like him will do anything not to answer that question.

Senate results will take a while to count. My gut tells me there will be a ‘centrist’ Senate. The Greens will  do better there than they did in the Lower House. But so will the One Nation Party, a sort of trumpist outfit that arose ‘avant- la lettre’ as they say.

Lower House could be 85 ALP seats.
      A truly excellent result.

@kindness: I like opposums. Poor little guys lead very hard, simple lives, eating bugs. And everyone hates them because of their fierce faces which is no indication of their actual behavior. They eat bugs and slugs for a living.

I had a friend years ago who lived in a wrecking yard, and they rescued a baby oppossum that she bottle fed and raised. Sweetest little critter imaginable, but not very bright.

Growing up in the South, I’d seen plenty of possums in the wild and, unfortunately, as roadkill.

It wasn’t until I was on a weekend break from work in SoCal that I encountered someone who had one as a pet.

Odd choice to me, as they’re not exactly cute critters but he seemed a well-behaved gentleman.

Opossums are the only native Marsupial species in the America’s with 9 subspecies.

Downunder has 100’s of species and subspecies. 15 are “called” possums. Inland from here, is the “Possum” graveyard. It’s on the CNR tracks, just before the bridge over the Chilliwack River. The upper valley has a large Opossum population and they apparently use a trail nearby that crosses the railroad tracks.

Apparently their defense mechanisms of hissing, playing dead, then leaping airborne at the last minute does not work well with trains. Bones, teeth and skulls are scattered all over the tracks.

U.S. Central Command, the part of the Pentagon that oversees its wars in the Middle East, denies that the United States military bombed a target in Yemen based on posts on X from an anonymous open source intelligence account which identified it as a Houthi base before the bombing and apologized for their posts after local news reports said civilians died in the bombing.

A defense official declined to say whether it was the U.S. that bombed the target, but said that the military does not use information posted by open-source intelligence accounts on social media to select targets. The defense official said CENTCOM uses detailed and comprehensive intelligence to conduct strikes against the Houthis. It’s common for the U.S. to kill civilians in airstrikes, and it has done so several times in Yemen. On Monday, for example, Reuters reported it killed dozens of people when it combed a detention center for African migrants.

While the US Military does incorporate tons of OSINT, one would expect that they would “vet” and confirm any OSINT found on the web before targeting along with OSINT sources.

      They do not.

Make a seemingly plausible “Houthi Base” claim on the Dead Bird site, with grainy photos and geotagging and the the US will send several millions of dollars of ordinance to kill a family of 4 and destroy their $275 mud hut.

Cheapest way to get large quantities of stuff to sell across oceans is by ship. And a big enough port to put a large freight ship (or a lot of large freight ships) into is going to have a not insignificant sized population. Say Los Angeles or San Francisco. And a lot of that cargo from China (if it continues….) is going to be trucked/railroaded from there eastward. Ever seen an automobile cargo ship? Holds a LOT of vehicles.
