Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

I look at these two, and I would never have predicted this.

I kind of think of them as the Odd Couple, but it works and I love that they are doing this together.

This should be everywhere.

Totally open thread.

Good for them. I’m happy to see an array of Dems getting out there and connecting with people. Also happy to see some inter-generational efforts in the vein of the Bernie/AOC tour.

Murphy Frost sounds like a good name for Tom Levenson’s new kitten. I’ve always admired Murphy since his fight for gun safety post-Sandy Hook and hoping he ran for POTUS once he had more experience under his belt. Frost is pretty fearless and I like that in a leader. My senator Ruben Gallego OTH seems to be heading towards Sinema 2.0.

@Mai Naem mobile: I am reserving judgment….. but I’ve been disappointed by Gallego so far. Voting for the Laken Riley act, showing up at an event with Marc Andreesen…. like whaaaaaaat?!

I wonder what kind of response they got. It would be nice if there were some clips from the TownHall. What topics did they cover? I have every confidence that they gave the kind of thoughtful answers we expect Democrats to give.

I’m not sure what makes them an odd couple. Both take significant amounts of their political fire from terrible experiences with gun violence and unspeakable death and loss. But I’m old so maybe I’m just slow.

Gallego apparently wants be the next John McCain. I have been disappointed as well and I hope he realizes the mistakes he has made.  I really do not want to see another Sinema here in AZ.

I’m sure someone has written about it, but I’d like to know how AARP got completely neutered. They were the reason why SocSec was the third rail of politics.

@WaterGirl: honestly, I’ve never looked at his voting record. I’ve never heard of him being like Lieberman or Sinema.  Pre-Sandy Hook he just came across as your standard boring white bread NE but from Connecticut  liberal. Post Sandy Hook i felt like he ‘got’ it.

@Suzanne: I’d been wondering if this seat  was Deconcini’s and hadn’t  bothered looking it up till today. Sure enough, it was Deconcini’s seat. Looked up Deconcini’s Wikipedia entry and ofcourse he served on the board of Corrections Corporation(private prison corp.) post Senate. The only thing I remember about Deconcini was that he was part of the Keating Five.  There must be something about that seat and sleazy Dems.

In a striking move that ends a nearly four-decades-old relationship between the federal government and the Episcopal Church, the denomination announced on Monday (May 12) that it is terminating its partnership with the government to resettle refugees, citing moral opposition to resettling white Afrikaners from South Africa who have been classified as refugees by President Donald Trump’s administration.

“The stated reasons for (Trump’s actions) are claims of victimisation, violence and hateful rhetoric against white people in South Africa along with legislation providing for the expropriation of land without compensation,” read the letter from white South African religious leaders, which included among its four authors an Anglican priest. “As white South Africans in active leadership within the Christian community, representing diverse political and theological perspectives, we unanimously reject these claims.”

So, Musk Watch theorized today, based on what we know that DOGE is not about cutting Federal spending, or making the Government more efficient,

It’s about hoovering up all Federal data, from SS records to biometric records, to partner with Palantir to create a baby SKYNET AI.

Murphy has always been on the left of the party with respect to foreign affairs — he was banging away about the US’s support for the Saudis against the Houthis in Yemen, and how that was destabilizing Yemen and killing children for years and years — one of the few who didn’t suddenly discover that the US was funding wars that harmed civilians when it was about Israel and Palestine. His bailiwick has always been foreign affairs and gun control. I guess he’s addressing more domestic issues now (and tbh I personally find him less compelling there).

The image of an “angry black man” being angry and protective about SOCIAL SECURITY is IMO quite amazing and will pierce not a little bit of cognitive dissonance in certain corners of our country. Good on the Dems – hope they do events in the South.

They have been doing these town halls in red districts for the last month or so. It’s always packed and a huge positive response. They are both active daily and on social media – which is how I follow them. Chris Murphy came out of nowhere for me to become one of the first Dem senators to call out the takeover in clear, cogent terms. He’s been one of our strongest leaders in this regard, doing live IGs to go in depth, doing protests/town halls, showing up on corporate media, and smashing Bondi the other day in a Senate hearing. He uses terms like FASCIST, AUTOCRACY, AUTHORITARIANISM, CRIMINAL, ILLEGAL, etc. He has been doing this since it started hitting the fan in February – I greatly appreciate his leadership. I knew NOTHING about him before this takeover.
